You asked for it, you got it: Mollyyyyy's Game!! We ran another Listeners' Choice poll and over stiff competition, Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut Molly's Game, based on the memoir by Molly Bloom about how her high stakes poker games (with famous players such as Tobey Maguire) landed her in federal court. Topics include how close Jessica Chastain came to a Best Actress nomination, Sorkin's three cinematic directorial efforts, and who fares best delivering Sorkin Speak! Re: Jeremy Bloom, he was also briefly a football player at the University of Colorado, but was deemed ineligible because he profited off his likeliness as a model, and college athletes are supposed to be “amateurs” (while universities and TV networks make billions of dollars off their labor). Twenty years later, the Supreme Court ruled that that was tantamount to antitrust and slavery, so now athletes can model and endorse products and actually profit off their work as an athlete. So there’s one positive development over the last twenty years.

I have a really dark theory that Lesley Manville's nomination came about at least partly because Gary Oldman was obviously hurtling towards a nom/win, and some messy bitches who live for drama wanted the exes to "compete," and some wanted justice for Lesley for that relationship (and the domestic abuse accusations).

I think both Paddington 2 and Death of Stalin were Oscar eligible the next year, where Adapted Screenplay wasn’t necessarily locked in (see: Ballad of Buster Scruggs) but did have more at play to edge them both out
