For me, the arrival of Steptoe & Son is the first sign that Britain's suddenly in a rush to get as far away from the 1950s as possible. It's a door opening to the more exciting culture of the 1960s that The Beatles would symbolise. Wonderful comedy, and one of the all-time great sitcoms.
