This wasn't originally going to be a Not Brand X, but Pontins and Haven and all that - their main identity is just "Butlins with different coloured coats", so I just narrowed it down to the OGs.

Also! Announcement! #200 is approaching - in 30 weeks, I think, which should be...at some point in the year. I dunno. But anyway I've decided to re-tackle day one of TV-am, because that's nice and epic and it'll have had its 40th birthday by then (in a couple of weeks). Also it's mostly written and I'm nothing if not a lazy bastard. I'd like to use a better quality version than the ones I already uploaded to YouTube, though, preferably off-air without the digital gubbins. If anyone knows of such a wondrous set of footage I'd be very grateful.

The Rank Organization eh? "J Arthur Rank and the titty bum bureau"

Not Butlins related, but I can confirm that enforced fun, set meal times and even "Goodnight Campers" still applied at the NALGO holiday centre as recently as 1985. Made Hi-De-Hi! seem like a documentary, not nostalgia.

*NALGO Croyde Bay, still going today, run by UNISON.

Is your Day One of TV-am going to include Day Minus One (that weird preview edition for potential advertisers hosted by David Frost that I know I would have been absolutely fascinated by as a small child if I'd known about it)?

Chris Oakley

Can't say I ever went to a Butlins holiday camp as a child, but went to lots of Pontins and Haven camps. In fact, I went to the holiday camp where the exterior shots of Hi-De-Hi were filmed, the year before they shut the place down for good. (Someone died from an accident in the swimming pool there.) Anyway, happy new year.

I loved going to Butlins Skegness or Fun Coast World as it was known. It was early 90s the second golden age of the video game arcade so armed with 20p’s in a bump bag from McDonald’s I had a great time. The 50s version sounds hell tho.

Part of me admires that anti-skegness picture but most of me is grumpy, especially the nostalgic bit of me that will forever associate it with summer holidays with my grandparents (dad's mum and dad). Not grumpy at you, Matthew. At the artist, lol Edit; Ironically we never went to Butlins though. Grandma and Granddad had a caravan in the town itself.
