It was a bit of a head scratcher as to how to wrap up this set! My initial idea was to have this fight scene followed by a long shot of the two at vending machine, or something that felt more relaxing and casual. After several drafts it just didn't feel very emotive or as high contrast as I hoped.

In the end I decided to go with a simpler and more direct illustration! It's definitely experimental, but I feel being able to use "mixed media" like this is worth trying at the very least. Looking at this second piece, it feels like dramatic lighting or a super-realistic scene wouldn't add anything, which made me lean towards leaving it in this kind of "direct-mode"

Of course, the fight itself was a lesson in pose management - how to "fit" two characters in a way that looked and felt natural was not easy at all. I cannot imagine just how difficult it would be to actually have an even more dynamic interaction..

This is one of those times I'd really like to hear your feedback, so please let me know what you think!

p.s. Process walkthrough videos will be up as always very soon!

p.s. Their names are Max ❤️& Mia💛courtesy of a close friend (otherwise it would take me another 2 years to finally give them names....)

Thank you as always for your warm support! ♥

Wow, I really love how energetic this piece feels too!! Dynamic illustrations are definitely harder than they look. I remember seeing an illustration of someone swinging their leg once, and it felt so natural and clean while still conveying a strong sense of motion, so I started wondering why it worked so well. I think adding more movement to the hair, or separating the parts that move quickly and applying a motion blur effect, really makes it look appealing. Kind of like pausing a video in the middle of an action scene. I feel like the key point is the blur effect used to express motion! By the way, about the drawing on the left — I don’t know if it was intentional, but I really love how the visibility of the eyes seems to reveal their personalities! It creates this feeling that the two characters’ personalities are clashing with each other, which makes it really interesting. I’d honestly love to read a comic about these two..🥰🥰🥹

Thank you so kindly for sharing your thoughts!!! It was a bit of challenge to find a good balance between something that felt authentic (as a sparring session), and something I can actually manage to pull off... In this case I opted to capture a more static moment in the session to preserve my sanity, but your point is superbly valid! I would love to attempt a more truly dynamic scene with more kinetic impact certainly when I can handle it. I'm also very glad you appreciated the veiled eyes on the left character (Mia)! I thought it would be quite a bit more interesting to create a contrast rather than just a direct stare-off. The stare-off is still implied, but just as you said, there is a difference in personality that is hinted here :) Thank you again for your very supportive comment, it helps to keep me going! (And I definitely want to get started on a comic in this lifetime!)

These are amazing! I love your art and the characters you create and every time I look at them I want to know more about them! :D I think the more direct and simple illustration works really well without a background! It still evokes curiosity in me bc of the interaction itself. I love love love pieces of characters interacting with each other in general and I think backgrounds aren’t always necessary to convey their emotions, the situation or their relationship. Especially the burger speech bubble and ellipsis add personality as well. I think had you left those out it would’ve had a different effect. I agree with Ranneojeg’s comment about adding more movement to the hair and using motion blur to convey quick movement in even more dynamic pieces. Also maybe exaggerating the pose just like in gesture drawing would probably make them more dynamic too.

I love them! they look sooo coool! at first glance, it was a litte hard to read what the arms where doing or wich arm belongs to who, but maybe its just me. I dont really know much a bout these chars or their lore (yet), so I was wondering why Max (who looks bigger/stronger) needs 2 hands to hold this stalemate, while Mia only needs one. But then I thought, what if Mia is more of a technical fighter. And because we cant see her expression, it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Like what if she's about to use some technique? or maybe shes limiting herself on purpose to become even stronger eventually. I like that :) this scene reminds me a bit of sumo! Let me know if this is helpful!

I love these! I think the only thing I would give feedback on isn't necessarily art wise. Idk which one is Max and which one is Mia ( my daughter's name is mia haha!) but long hair, in a fight at least, and during training, is more likely to be tied up so it's not in the way. Either a bun or a ponytail? It's really up to you in the end, but that's the one thing that stuck out for me really, if assuming you're keeping a sense of realism. Everything else is perfect as is I think! Great work as always! And honestly, I like the pieces with a white background. Means we focus entirely on the characters. :)

more muscle girls 😍love it. muscular fighter type women are right up my alley. these fr my favorite characters form all of your works. especially the short white hairde one. I fr need to learn how to draw hair like that bruhhhh, rn I'm actively practicing art so ill get there at some point. I also like the scars, fits the fighter vibe. Only thing I find a bit odd is that the white haired one has an earbud in while fighting. Now I'm calling her white haired girl instead of Max or Mia bc idk which one is which 💀, guessing from the heart colors and their clothing colors Mia is the white haired one. Anyways I'd love to see more of these two, I like these a lot. Since I like drawing female fighters this is nice reference for future drawings. Keep up the amazing work man!!!

Thank you very much for sharing and the kind words!! I think I've finally found "the" use case for such a format - it's something that the usual fully painted style can't really do that well :) You're also right on the extra movement, I know it works, but I have to really put together the effort to do a good one sometime!

guweiz

It is very helpful! I think your comment on the difficult to read arms at first glance is also true - even though they are grappling, they aren't really exerting too much force on each other, which can make it hard to tell what's going on physically. Point taken! And I love that you've imagined a story around their power levels! It's super rewarding to find that my illustration has inspired imagination :) It has to be that head down, low stance that is sumo-like, right!

guweiz

Thank you for the feedback for sure!! That's something I have to figure out eventually with Max's (long curly hair) design, I wonder what it would look like in a ponytail or a bun! I'm certain it would come in useful in more that just this scene! I appreciate the love for the white background illustration very much! I had some concern that it might reflect as lower effort, but the actual need for this format to showcase this specific moment overrode it for me. Thank you again! :)

Firstly you got the name right, great guess!! Thank you also for your kind words, I very much appreciate the appreciation :) I think hair really can add quite a lot to expressing emotion (sounds weird but it works) with how it flows/ what state is it in. The earbud is a choice for sure, I think earlier on I didn't intend to draw them in a fighting cage, and more like a very casual spar/practice. Ended up never adjusting for the new setting! Thank you once again! :)

Guweiz youre an artgod to me.I noticed that Artists are not specific about the color they use.I study my environment but i get overwhelmed differnt light scenarios have diff typ of value saturation etc.i learned proper shadow construction through how to render book.im having a hard time understanding reflection and reflecting surfaces.i believe there is a proper construction it aswell.after 2 or 3 constructions i can draw things without construction.ofcourse you have to study and figure out most of the things.i feel reflections to be pretty random.Looking forward to youre reply.Any book or tip you reccomend. very exicited, youre my idol guweiz i just love your work, youre awesome.
