I'm working on a new set continuing from the latest one in terms of narrative (should be fun!) It's quite tough one though and will probably take a bit longer before it's out, so I thought in the meantime I'll do one of these. Feel free to ask your question below and I'll try my best to give a detailed reply!

Can u post the progress of your new set like a early sketch then unfinished then final piece

Hi GUWEIZ! In general, what do you want the viewer to feel, or what do you hope the viewer will pay attention to, when they consume your art? I know each piece is different and may have its own answer, but are there some overall ideas of what you're hoping that we will notice and look for in your message? I am fascinated by your work. I think your settings, poses, expressions, characters, are brilliant. Thanks for everything you've given to the world. Much love from USA.

Shunn Lischina

My first question is, have you worked in the Industry before & my 2nd question, do you do any exhibition or upcoming one? Would be an honor to meet you in person. Ty for the Q&A

Hi! I always have this dilemma of practice gesture/anatomy/lightning or just go ahead with a full painting and I'd like to know what was your approach. Did you focus on learning the fundamentals first? Or did you learn all that on the go, with each painting?

Diego9697

what is your goal for bad guys drawing series? I would very much like to follow the story of the 2 girls also in the form of a short story or comic

Cristina

Hi! Can’t wait to see the new set. My question is what would your advice be for artist who is currently looking for their own voice? I feel like in this day and age there’s too much information and it can be really overwhelming. Like you’ve said in the past that some of your early work were inspired by Ilya Kuvshinov but we can clearly see now that you have found your own voice. So is it possible for you to talk about how did you grown out of other artists’ influence and find your own voice? Thanks!

Hi! My question is about your working space setup, examples what tablets, monitors or software do you use? Thanks

Bruce ee

can we have real time speed painting process?

David Dang

What do I need to do to get a license to animate your work or use it for commercial work?

Lewis Smith

Hi, I was wondering how you make character and environment designs interesting?

Keith Olaco

How do I approach painting over a sketch without having to use line-art?

AR

Have you ever tried traditional painting? I've wondered how some of your works would look as 2x3 m wide oil on canvas.

Lndo Gusto

Hi! Any advice on how to essentially get more social media presence effectively? Because I really lack social / self promotion skills and my growth is really, like really slow. I know we shouldn't really care about numbers but I just can't help it at this rate of growth.

dobercorgi

Speaking of narratives, have you considered making a sequential art/wordless narrative book? Compiling your Bad Guys art or other stories seems like a really cool idea.

Aryan Agarwal

Any advice on how to make backgrounds interesting. I can't really draw background and when i do they end up looking very meh.

Shion Irene

How do you approach painting the urban environment that we see in the Bad Guys series and numerous other artworks?

Swishy_Pants

Hello! I just started drawing recently and I was wondering if you had any recommended tutorials on where I should really be starting for digital art? If you have one or know someone who does? I absolutely love your work and I’m excited to see what you make next :)

Pug Nugget

How do you make interesting textures?

Tony Bui

Hey Guweiz! Wanted to say I'm a big fan of your work! For the question, would you ever consider critiquing your patron supporters in the future?

Hiraizon_

we all very appreciate your hard work but will you ever do re-paints/remasters again? i kinda miss those lol

Artem

First of all I want to say thanks for your hard working! Your arts as always the best. And it may be a little off top, but do you still plan to make portrait tutorial? It will be so cool to look at some of your techniques especially when it comes to stylization!

guweiz

Do you mean the upcoming set? Each month we go through the .psd file of every piece and I talk about the process there, so you will be able to see many stages of every piece then.

guweiz

I feel the most fun part when I look at art/photos/stories is imagining what more could exist in that world, and that's really just rewarding in itself, which is why I tend to enjoy art that tends to push towards more extraordinary themes. As for my own work, I think it will be nice if viewers can freely interpret whats going on and let the piece be part of their imagination!

guweiz

I am working in the industry right now - as a freelancer taking up short to medium term contracts for projects I like and sound interesting to me (of course personal work is still my main motivator!) There may be an exhibition coming up later in the year in Japan (TBC) and depending on the covid situation I may not be able to visit it myself sadly.

guweiz

I think it really depends on your goals - if you are very interested in gesture for example, theres no harm at all to just focus on that for a while. I would say especially in a self-learning context, motivation is very important. Personally, I mostly did full paintings (flawed as they may be) , with a bit of focused topical study sprinkled on the side as I was interested in creating something fully that I could share.

guweiz

I'm trying to figure that out myself! So far it's been great fun just exploring and finding out whats good and what's lacking in my own abilities/vision

guweiz

It's a difficult question, but I think after I started getting slightly more proficient with the basics and fundamentals, I felt much more free and empowered to start just drawing what I wanted, in the way I wanted to. When things come together organically in that way, I feel the personal "style" can shine through even if the subject matter isn't revolutionary or super unique.

guweiz

My working space is quite simple, just a 1080p monitor, a small wacom intuos pen tablet with photoshop

guweiz

I will try to find a good drawing/sketch to do a full process on :)

guweiz

I'm not quite looking to sell commercial rights to my existing personal work at the moment, sorry!

guweiz

I think good use of references is definitely part of the process - basically find lots of relevant images you just enjoy looking at, think about what you can incorporate and then find a way to integrate them nicely

guweiz

Faces are really tough because we all see them a lot in daily life so it's difficult to paint them "roughly" and get a pass with viewers (or yourself). I think the core of it always comes back to clarity, you have to be deliberate with the exact perspective, volume and lighting - it doesn't have to be complicated or fancy, but it has to be very clear. References help greatly with that! A portrait tutorial focusing on face is something definitely on the to-do list.

guweiz

I usually keep the rough sketch as a layer, and then paint under it. When the sketch starts holding me back, I just paint over it

guweiz

I have not - it sounds really daunting and I'm not sure if I'm ready for it!

guweiz

I feel the core always goes back to making art you enjoy, not because it will magically solve everything, but it opens doors to longevity. With time you can improve, discover and evolve your own work and become increasingly proficient. I think social media itself is a really dangerous thing to be obsessed about, because it's just so fickle and unpredictable, we can all really only put our best foot forward and hope it works out. It only hurts you and your morale to measure your progress with it.

guweiz

There is something in the works!

guweiz

References are really important, find lots of them for everytime you need something. Find a few matching the camera angle, find a few with the elements you like, a few with the lighting you want, etc. Pay close attention to them and extract what you find the most attractive!

guweiz

Lots of references to help figure out what kind of layout might be interesting, what details should go where. Once the core is done I do a bunch of improvisation to fit it to my vision more closely.

guweiz

For the technical side of learning digital art, I think things are fortunately quite intuitive and forgiving. Personally I just played around with photoshop and figured out how I liked to use each tool - and googled up specific things I didn't understand. Apologies that I don't have a specific resource to direct you to!

guweiz

Usually I just paint and match realistic textures when possible (rocks, leaves, scratches on metal) as a base, and then improvise from there. Use references to find out key characteristics of each type of texture so you can capture them effectively.

guweiz

I think that is definitely a possibility!

guweiz

I will - they are always a nice break!

guweiz

Yes, it is definitely on the to do list!

Olivia Cat

How do you know when to stop rendering. When is a pice finished?

Mark Xi

Hi GUWEIZ! How did you find your go-to face for female beauty and how do you tweak it slightly for different characters? And when you say be "rough" but clear, do you mean painting with only a few strokes to represent the objects not in focal point? And those strokes need to be efficient to capture value and shape well? Did you find a good way to practice this skill? Every tutorial have the same background music, does it have some emotional significant to you lol? And thank you for your hard work!

mountainsfang

Hi Guweiz! So in love with your stuff. Any tips on how to grow a social media following, and how to be able to support yourself as an independent artist?

yohanes adrian

hello Guweiz, just wondering if you ever considered doing some kind of art critique and "fixing" video for your patron?

Mark Xi

Hi GUWEIZ! How do you come up with character poses? Do you find references and tweak them afterwards? You seem to have a way of showing character's emotion via poses! Thanks

guweiz

I stop when the piece looks good to me, for example, the main focal areas are painted cleanly enough for my tastes, various other parts are also sufficiently detailed/populated, and the composition in general is satisfactory. Of course, I also sometimes return to a finished piece to add a few more things!

guweiz

For the face, I think it's just something that stuck after time, I got used to a configuration that looks "right" to me, there really isn't a single real world face I can attribute it to. Of course, the basic structure is based in real faces. In that case, I am referring to capturing the key characteristics of whatever element is present as priority. For example, if we want to capture the appearance of blood splatter, the foremost thing to do is capturing the presence of red, then the shape of the splatter, and then any highlights, etc in order. Being rough allows us to "process" the full image quicker and spot/ correct higher level mistakes before fiddling with the small details, because the overall impression is 80% of the piece. The same music is just because I'm lazy and it's filler.

guweiz

I think a good way to manage that is just to post your work on many platforms and keep working on new art you want! There really isn't a way to "game" the system nor is it worth effort and mental energy in my opinion. Supporting yourself as an independent artist can happen in many, many ways - you can take on contracts for larger companies (game/film design, illustration), or do individual jobs for clients/companies, or create your own work and build up an audience from there, I think the most important is to find something you enjoy doing and work on that particular aspect - the basic skills are very transferable once you have those settled you can usually pick/take up the types of jobs you like.

guweiz

I have shared a couple of my most used, outside of the default brushes, more to come

guweiz

That one is quite a bigger commitment, but we will see!

guweiz

I usually try to think of a particular energy I'm trying to carry across, and then look for references from there - of course sometimes I just come across great reference that inspires the piece as well - after that, it is a matter of extracting the right pieces of information to create the piece that you want.

sh'ko

我好开心,想问的太多了

guweiz

Hello, What kind of jobs were you offered or jobs you've took as an Illustrator?
