This was a really fun piece to start off with as a attempt, and I had a pretty ambitious plan! Sadly, it seems my skill is still lacking in many ways.I really put all I had into this piece, but (as its becoming a pattern of late), I feel like I hit a wall again.

The complexity of the pose also allowed space for a lot of tough questions to pop up as I progressed, and I feel I couldn't answer all of them despite trying my best. (Full discussion in this month's process video!)

Looking through my past works, this probably is one of the most detailed - yet I'm still really not happy with how I finished it. I want every new piece to be impressive, but maybe that is asking for too much! I do feel bad that despite your kind support here, my recent work has been inadequate in a way I never really felt before. Maybe I'm just really tired, but I will keep trying my best.I realized this reads like a real downer! But I think it's important to acknowledge bad times as well, rather than putting on a false front, and I hope in some way my struggles can help you feel less alone!

I can understand and relate to some of that as a musician. But honestly this is evocative and inspiring to look at. Remember to also be kind to yourself as you try to push your limits.

Incredible work. Although you’re hitting a wall, the quality is still phenomenal. Since you’re trying to push your limits perhaps you could try new angles and change up field of view. Don’t burn yourself out though!

Thrownaxe

Very awesome work. The level of detail is amazing with so much in the image. Looking forward to what you do next.

Amazing work!!!! One day I want you to do my book covers!

Thank you, I'm really happy you enjoy it!

guweiz

Thank you, I feel that could be the most challenging thing for me personally, I will try though!

guweiz

Thank you! I'm hitting a wall in the sense that I just don't quite have the skill to pull off some of these more advanced compositions, but I will keep trying!

guweiz

Thank you very much! Detail is always fun to draw, I'm glad you like it!

Don’t be too hard on yourself! Take some time to reflect if you feel unhappy with your recent work. Your artwork is impressive as it is to us and the amount of love and care you put in your art is inspiring. Wishing you luck!

You are too harsh on yourself. The pose and the rendering are fantastic and I wish I had the skill to paint like that. I think the problems might be with the composition. The image feels a bit tight, especially at the top where the character's head practically touches the frame. I'd expand upwards / to the right and show more of the dragon. Maybe some light on the dragon and the character's face would help with defining the focal point? The lamp is competing for attention a bit while the focus should be at the top. Great leading lines all over the place though!

I recognize that this didn't meet your personal standards, but hoo boy I love it. I always appreciate you revisiting this character; I have an D&D character that was heavily inspired by it and it always feels like you're making art just for me. ^_^

Swishy_Pants

Your baseline for “not good enough” is so so so insanely well done and valuable, you always push yourself a lot, and it’s valid- but your art is, and always will be stunning no matter what you could do better. The fact that you can put out so much and care so much means there’s a true love in each piece and I am always excited whenever I see a new work of yours :). So keep the mental locked and loaded because I don’t think anything you could put out is bad

guweiz

Thank you for the kind words!

guweiz

Thank you, I really appreciate that you like it!

I think that is indeed what I need, time to really reflect and think about why I feel this way. But thank you very much for the encouragement!

guweiz

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts! It does feel that way doesn't it - the composition here is definitely not quite as good as it could be. A lot of the points you made are great, especially on that darned lamp! There's still something in the pose that doesn't feel right, almost as if the character is not "tense" enough, but I do appreciate the kind comments!

guweiz

Thank you, I'm really glad that you do! That's very cool to hear :)

I really love the design of her clothes and accessories especially her multiple jade pedants, the balance of those elements from different cultures are perfect. The shadows and lights on her arm are so realistic, it really shocks me. Thanks for the work and eager to see more different designs in the future.

guweiz

I really appreciate your kind words, sometimes a piece can go from full of expectation at the beginning, to immense disappointment at the end for me, so I do tend to get a bit negative if I feel I didn't quite do it the way I wanted. I really heartens me to hear that even these imperfect pieces have something that you enjoy!

I genuinely don’t think this piece is bad at all, the contrast between the darker background to the warm values of the lamp really make the piece pop. The only thing that stood out to me was the warm values were too drastic making the lamp the main subject instead of the dragon, which with some cast shadows on the dragon could be all you need to complete this piece. Your work is a great inspiration to me and hope you don’t be too harsh on yourself, looking forward to the next one!

guweiz

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement, it really means a lot! I'll keep trying my best no matter what :)

guweiz

Thank you! I think there is definitely something there with the lamp, it does feel a bit on the strong side! I'm definitely already working on a bunch of new pieces, thank you for your support :)
