Chapter 3: Something's Not Right

"Hm? A voice..."

Li Pai immediately stopped everything.

The corridor was quiet, with only Li Pai's pounding heartbeat breaking the silence.

"The sound of chopping meat... It stopped!"

Li Pai realized that something was amiss. The abrupt silence meant that the housekeeper heard the noise from the wooden stairs! He had been discovered!

Sure enough, the next moment, heavy footsteps came from the kitchen. From the kitchen to the stairs, it would only take a few seconds!

No time to hesitate!

Li Pai gritted his teeth and rushed up the stairs.

Just as Li Pai reached the corner of the staircase, the housekeeper with the meat cleaver appeared in the hallway.

Their eyes met for half a second.

The housekeeper's face was grim, and the cleaver in her hand was dripping with blood.

"Stop right there! Put down that severed arm!!"

The housekeeper raised the cleaver and charged at Li Pai, roaring loudly.

"You think I'll just stand here and let you attack me? You must be crazy!"

Li Pai cursed inwardly and continued to sprint upstairs.

Behind him, the housekeeper's curses followed, but Li Pai ignored them and quickly arrived on the second floor.

The second-floor corridor was pitch-black, with only a dim oil lamp flickering at the end. The flame of the lamp swayed slightly, as if it could go out at any moment.

Fear of the unknown ahead, and the housekeeper with a knife hot on his heels behind him, Li Pai didn't have time to hesitate. He could only steel himself and move forward.

After a few steps, Li Pai suddenly stopped.

"It's strange; the stairs didn't make any sound, could it be that the housekeeper wasn’t able to catch up?"

Li Pai looked back, and true enough, there was no sign of the housekeeper.

"Could it be that she's restricted by some rule from coming upstairs?"

Li Pai tried to think from the perspective of the game and found it quite likely.

"If that's the case, there's nothing to worry about, there is no way that the second floor is scarier than the first one anyway.”

Li Pai smiled, trying to ease the tension.

Suddenly, a gust of wind blew!

The oil lamp at the end of the corridor went out!

Li Pai froze in place.

"No way..."

A bad feeling crept into Li Pai's heart.

The oil lamp had a glass cover. How could the flame be blown out by wind through the glass? This was unreasonable!

Then, the window in the corridor suddenly lit up!

It seemed like there was a thunderstorm outside.

During the moment the corridor was illuminated, Li Pai saw a figure in white standing at the end of the corridor, with disheveled hair.

"No way? Sadako"

"Did I really buy a dating game?"

"Something feels off!"

Li Pai's heart was beating faster and faster.

The sensory experience of this game was much stronger than any previous VR game. Li Pai could even feel the touch of the cold wind on his skin.

If this turned out to be a horror game, it could terrify people!

"Boom! Boom!"

Shortly after the light disappeared, thunder roared.

Li Pai felt like he had been hit in the chest with a hammer, causing his chest to ache.

Immediately after that, a lightning bolt flashed.

This time, the corridor was empty, and the white figure suddenly disappeared.

Before Li Pai could ponder, another lightning bolt struck, illuminating the corridor again.

This time, the white figure appeared in the middle of the corridor!

It was only ten meters away from Li Pai!

Li Pai could even see the pale face underneath the flowing long hair. A chill crawled up Li Pai's spine and settled on his scalp.

"Quit the game!" Li Pai decisively chose to give up. What kind of dating game was this? Warm and happy? That review was pure nonsense!

"Broken Beauty scene exploration: 5%, insufficient for quitting the game," the system's prompt dealt a heavy blow to Li Pai.

"No way! There's such a setting?"

"Is this a dating game or a room escape?"

Li Pai couldn't help but curse. But now was not the time to give a bad review.

After failing to quit the game, Li Pai had no choice but to accept the situation at hand.

Li Pai looked around and found a nearby door. As the white figure approached, Li Pai didn't hesitate and rushed into the room, slamming the door shut behind him.

"Bang!"

Leaning against the door, Li Pai pressed his back against it, breathing heavily due to nervousness. Sweat beads formed on his forehead.

"That thing can't go through walls, right?"

"If it can, then it doesn't matter how hard I push the door."

Li Pai mumbled to himself. If there really was no way to resist, he could only silently accept his fate. Maybe that female ghost only wanted his body and wouldn't harm him... Thinking like this, Li Pai felt slightly calmer.

"This game is way too creepy!"

"I have to find a way to leave as soon as possible."

Li Pai mumbled in his heart. The game had received very positive reviews online, so it shouldn't be intentionally trying to trick players. Could it be that the simple "dating" element was no longer enough for players? Adding a bit of adventure element to a dating game was understandable, as some people even turned card games into open-world action RPGs!

However, with a bloodthirsty housekeeper and a ghost in a white dress, this was a bit too much!

"Not enough exploration points to leave..."

"This is no different from a room escape!"

"Finding this arm increased exploration points by 5%."

"As long as I keep collecting, my exploration points should increase."

Li Pai looked at the severed arm in his hand. For now, he could only try to collect as many body parts of the Broken Beauty as possible.

After leaning against the door for a few seconds, the white-dressed ghost didn't pass through the wall or try to break the door. For whatever reason, Li Pai was safe for the time being.

"Let's search this room first."

Li Pai took a deep breath and began to inspect the room.

The room was dimly lit; moonlight seemed to be blocked by clouds and couldn't enter. Only occasional flashes of lightning briefly illuminated the room.

During those lightning flashes, Li Pai got a clear view of the room's layout.

It was a small room of around ten square meters. In the center of the room was a wooden bed with a rustic style. At the foot of the bed was a long bench covered in dust.

To the left of the bed was a bedside table with a makeup mirror. To the right was a deep red wardrobe. Next to the wardrobe, there was a desk with an unlit oil lamp on top.

The walls were covered with mold and showed numerous cracks.

"This should be a guest room."

"Let's light up the lamp first."

Li Pai steadied himself against the wall and walked to the desk.

The glass cover of the oil lamp was covered in dust, with several cobwebs hanging from it. Li Pai didn't know if it would still light up.

Gently opening a drawer, Li Pai wanted to find matches or something similar to start a fire.

In the dim light, Li Pai could only reach into the drawer blindly.

After fumbling for a while, Li Pai suddenly felt a stick-shaped object!

This touch... seemed familiar.
