Chapter 4: The Head in the Wardrobe
Li Pai reached out and took the thing out. "It's a flashlight..." In the dim moonlight, Li Pai could make out what he was holding. "Click—" Li Pai turned on the flashlight.
The beam was weak, flickering at times, indicating that it didn't have much battery left. But at least it could illuminate a small area in front of him.
With the light from the flashlight, Li Pai felt much more at ease and continued searching. In a nearby drawer, Li Pai found a diary.
"Obtained 'Visitor's Diary.'"
"Exploration progress: 10%."
The sudden system prompt startled Li Pai, but he quickly relaxed. It increased the exploration progress! It seemed that it wasn't necessary to find all the body parts of the 'Broken Beauty'; discovering other useful items could also raise the exploration progress.
Well, assembling a broken body was quite a cumbersome task, so it would be nice to increase the progress through other means.
"This diary must hold some important clues."
Li Pai glanced around, ensuring nobody was disturbing him, and then sat at the table, flipping open the diary.
"July 4th As an outstanding demon hunter, I must urge myself to enhance my abilities and strive to obtain a Level 2 demon hunter license within a month.
July 13th Ms. Erola is so charming! I lingered near her house.
July 14th Ms. Erola is so charming! I lingered near her house.
July 15th Ms. Erola is so charming! I lingered near her house.
July 16th Hunter, oh Hunter! How could you be so decadent! Have you forgotten the plan we made earlier? We can't continue like this!
July 17th Ms. Erola is so charming! I lingered near her house. ......"
After reading a few pages, Li Pai couldn't help rolling his eyes. This Hunter person was always lingering near Ms. Erola's house, such a lack of seriousness. Well, after all, who writes a diary seriously?
Collecting himself, Li Pai continued reading.
"July 25th Today, there's something strange about Ms. Erola's mansion. My compass is vibrating. I feel like there's something abnormal inside the mansion. As an upright demon hunter, it's reasonable to pay her a visit. Ms. Erola's butler was very hospitable.
He served me tea and even cooked roasted meat for me. Oh God, it was the most delicious meat I've ever had in my life! Unfortunately, I heard that Ms. Erola was ill, so I didn't see her today. After the meal, I felt a bit sleepy. The butler kindly invited me to stay the night. Of course, I couldn't refuse. There seems to be some strange sounds from the attic. Can't keep my eyes open, feeling so sleepy... I'll ask the butler about it tomorrow."
The diary ended there. Clearly, this person named Hunter had fallen asleep and never got a chance to continue writing.
"Good thing I only took a small sip."
Li Pai felt relieved. That cup of tea must have been problematic!
As for the roasted meat that he got previously, whatever it’s true origin is, it's definitely not some regular meat!
Li Pai flipped through the diary again, confirming that there was no other useful content, then closed it. He stroked his chin, starting to extract the information from the diary.
Since the discovery of this diary increased the exploration progress, its contents must be related to the secrets of this mansion.
"Demon Hunter..."
Li Pai noticed the profession of this person named Hunter. If it made a demon hunter feel something unusual, it meant that this mansion must have some issues.
Moreover, the diary mentioned that the mistress of the house, Ms. Erola, seemed to be ill. Li Pai wasn't sure if she was genuinely sick. From the diary's wording, Hunter probably didn't get to see her.
Aside from that, the useful information seemed to be about the attic mentioned in the diary.
The attic...
Li Pai recalled the view he saw from outside the mansion. It was a three or four-story building, and the half-floor above the third floor should be the attic.
What could be in the attic?
Was this suggesting that he should explore it?
Li Pai frowned. If this were a real-life escape room game, he wouldn't have many concerns and might even find it interesting. However, now there was a ghost floating in the corridor outside, and a hospitable butler on the first floor. The third floor and attic... who knew what dangers might be there!
But if he didn't go... the exploration progress would only be at 10%...
"This is so unfair!"
Li Pai couldn't help but complain. It felt like he was being forced to explore the attic! This place was way scarier than a biohazard crisis!
"Quit the game!"
Li Pai tried to leave again.
"Exploration progress in the 'Broken Beauty' scene is 10%, not reaching 50%, unable to quit the game."
The attempt to exit failed.
As expected, he couldn't leave!
"Sigh..."
Li Pai sighed and had no choice but to accept the reality. After leaving, he would sell this helmet and never play this game again!
"Let's search here first, maybe I can find something useful."
Holding the flashlight, Li Pai began searching the room. He had already checked the drawers of the desk before, and besides the diary and flashlight, there was nothing else.
Li Pai glanced at the nearby wardrobe. The dark red wooden wardrobe seemed especially terrifying in this atmosphere, and most people had an inherent fear of wardrobes. Whether something terrifying or just the neighbor next door would come out after opening it, it was always a frustrating experience.
But Li Pai didn't have a choice. Whatever was inside the wardrobe, at least this room was relatively safe, which was better than going to the attic.
Li Pai took a deep breath, one hand holding the flashlight, illuminating the wardrobe, and the other hand slowly reached forward.
His trembling hand slowly approached the wardrobe door.
Gripping the handle...
Slowly pulling it open...
The creaking of the old hinges sounded painfully.
The faint beam of the flashlight shone into the gap of the wardrobe.
"Gasp!!!"
The scene in front of Li Pai made him shiver all over! Cold sweat instantly broke out, wetting his back! The flashlight in his hand almost slipped.
In the gap of the wardrobe, Li Pai saw...
A head!
