Chapter 33: Children's Room
This time, Li Pai didn't feel any discomfort.
He was currently a spirit, and this cold aura wouldn't make him too repulsed.
"Ding-a-ling—"
As the wooden door was slowly opened, a clear jingling sound rang out.
The silence was broken.
"There's a bell hanging on the door."
Snow White pointed upwards with a strand of her hair.
This was a common warning method; even ordinary households used it.
Using her black hair, Snow White held the bell in place.
Once again, silence enveloped the surroundings.
Li Pai looked inside the room, and before him lay pitch darkness, like a bottomless abyss devouring all light.
In the darkness, there seemed to be a disturbance, like the surge of tide.
"Well, since I can leave at any time, what's there to fear!"
Li Pai encouraged himself mentally.
The quick back-and-forth he just experienced had brought a sense of reassurance to Li Pai's heart.
Coupled with his earlier exploration experience at Elora's house, the current Li Pai was no longer the timid person he was when he first entered the game.
Li Pai took out the torch and the firestarter he had obtained from the two unfortunate monster hunters in his consciousness space.
The flame ignited.
As the fire flickered, it illuminated a small area in front of him.
It was a straight corridor.
The old wooden floor was covered in dust.
On either side of the corridor were symmetrically arranged doors.
"This layout... seems a bit strange."
Li Pai couldn't help but mutter.
In a normal house, the ground floor should have spaces like a living room, dining room, and such. Even if there's an entrance hall, it wouldn't go straight through like this.
But this cabin's corridor extended directly to the bottom.
It's a bit like... a hospital? A school? A prison?
Well, it just felt odd, not like a place where regular people would live.
"It feels like a dormitory."
"It's somewhat similar to where the servants live in the palace."
Snow White commented from the side.
"A dormitory, huh..."
Li Pai's heart skipped a beat.
This might indicate that he had possibly found the right place!
Seven dwarves, living in a dormitory, it makes sense!
Li Pai carefully examined the surroundings by the light of the torch.
On this floor, there were a total of four rooms, symmetrically arranged.
At the end of the corridor was a narrow staircase.
There should be a few more rooms on the second floor.
If Li Pai's guess was correct, each of the seven dwarves might have had their own room.
"It's full of a sense of death here, as if no one has lived here for a long time."
Snow White said softly.
Her long hair brushed against several spiderwebs and dust as it swayed.
"No one has lived here..."
Li Pai immediately understood the dual meaning of this statement.
No one has lived here, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's no spirit...
"I'm a spirit now too! What am I afraid of!"
"Since becoming a spirit, even Snow White seems more delicate and beautiful to me..."
"Other spirits are kind of like my own kind, how could they scare me?"
Li Pai once again encouraged himself in his mind.
"Let's go, let's just enter a room casually and take a look."
Holding the torch, Li Pai slowly moved forward.
After a few steps, Li Pai arrived at a wooden door.
The door didn't have a peephole, but instead, a drawing of an eye was on the door panel, looking quite eerie.
Li Pai looked at this eye and felt as if he were staring at someone.
"This is the witch's trick, It can see if someone is approaching the door at any time, however, this eye seems to have lost its effect, It's probably been too long, and its magical power has been depleted."
Snow White explained from the side.
"The witch's tricks are quite diverse..."
Li Pai felt a little envious in his heart.
Unfortunately, he was just an ordinary and confident spirit without any special abilities.
When he could see Elora again, he would try to have a deeper conversation with her and see if he could learn something.
"Open the door."
Li Pai said to Snow White.
With a torch in one hand and a crossbow in the other, Li Pai didn't have the ability to turn doorknobs, so he could only ask Snow White to do it.
Snow White's long hair skillfully wound around the doorknob, giving it a gentle twist.
The door opened slightly.
Dust floated down from above the doorstep.
This door probably hadn't been opened for a while.
Snow White gently pushed the door.
The door creaked open.
The light from the torch shone in, illuminating a section of the room.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Li Pai, holding the torch, stepped into the room first.
With the torch entering, the warm light covered the entire room.
The room's layout came into view.
It was a child's room.
A small bed, about a meter wide, was against the wall, next to a tiny sofa.
Beside the sofa was a small desk.
On the desk, there was a box.
On the other side of the room, there was a little wooden horse, surrounded by scattered building blocks.
'Dwarves... are the dwarves mentioned in this scenario a literal children? Not the mythical race with short stature and a beard? Well, whatever.'
Li Pai muttered to himself in his mind.
This kind of child's room is one of the scariest scenes in horror movies. When combined with the sounds of ghostly cries or children's laughter, it can be especially effective.
However, Li Pai is no longer human and has developed a stronger mental resilience. He won't easily feel fear.
Snow White followed Li Pai into the room.
As soon as they entered, with a "bang," the door suddenly closed by itself!
"It wasn't me! The door closed by itself!"
Snow White immediately explained.
"I-I can't open it!"
Snow White tried to turn the doorknob, but found it wouldn't budge.
"Just get used to it after experiencing it a few times."
Li Pai remained calm.
Compared to the situation where Snow White suddenly appeared behind me on the second floor of Elora's house, this wasn't frightening at all.
The door closing after entering, an old trick, didn't bother Li Pai at all.
After all, he could leave anytime he wanted. If something felt wrong, he could just exit the game.
"Wait..."
Li Pai suddenly felt a shiver down his spine.
Based on his experiences over the past two days, this system... definitely isn't a reliable system!
Being able to exit the game outside the wooden house doesn't mean he can do the same here!
'Damn it! Can't believe I guessed it right!'
An ominous feeling spread within Li Pai.
"Exit the game!"
Li Pai shouted in his mind.
[Currently in a special scene, unable to exit the game]
[Please try again after leaving the scene]
The system's voice slapped Li Pai loudly.
"I...!"
Li Pai's chest felt tight.
This fucking system... why didn't he think of this!
He should have tried to exit as soon as he entered the room!
Now trapped in this room with no way out, he can only rely on himself...
'From a game perspective, this shouldn't be a death trap, as long as I solve the puzzle, I should be able to leave, unlike before, I have a teammate with me this time, so it should be easier than the previous one'
Li Pai comforted himself in his mind.
At that moment, Li Pai suddenly saw Snow White's hair reaching towards the box on the table.
"Don't mess—"
Before Li Pai could warn her, Snow White had already opened the box.
Music started playing...
