Oh shit, back with the king of vocal melodies

bryan

speaking as somebody who prefers this album to nevermind, i just love the mix of inaccessible sounds with catchy riffs and hooks.

i think the band genuinely wanted to give their audience a unique experience. no irony, tho maybe a little in some spots, i doubt they were trying to take the piss w listeners

Sage, have you ever seen the MTV Unplugged in NY concert? Definitely worth a watch along (rather than listening to the album)

First of all just wanna say amazing reaction. I love how open minded you were with the album despite how harsh it sounds for first time listeners. What you said about the first two songs when you compared the album to a “trash can” type of quality you arent entirely wrong. On this album, kurt wanted to strip back that polished sound on nevermind and make a super raw, almost intimate album that can feel like youre in the room with the band. You also werent wrong when you compared it to noise rock because that is exactly what he was going for (he was heavily influenced by sonic youth which you should listen to if you havent). I love what you said on radio friendly unit shifter, comparing it to an alien ufo communicating with you because thats alot of what noise rock is about. It might seem ironic or that he was tryna troll on alot of the songs but you can think of it like those really long pink floyd instrumental sections on songs like dogs or shine on you crazy diamond, hes really just trying to create an atmosphere. All of those crazy screechy feedback moments on the album are very intentional and, in my opinion, not meant to vibe out to, but to create this very angry environment that really is what kurt cobain was feeling at the time. When people say “dont read too much into his lyrics” dont listen to them. The reason he made songs like “rape me” is because people misread his intentions in songs all the time, dating back to polly which they misinterpreted as a misogynistic anthem. Rape me is supposed to be from the perspective of a rape victim and what theyre feeling towards the attacker. The song is SUPPOSED to make you feel uncomfortable, which i think kurt did a really good job at. This album was his angriest, most stripped down and experimental on all levels. You can hear it from the lazy vocals, the primal screeches and the soft strings across all of the songs. I guess you could describe it as an alternative/noise/indie rock album (indie mostly coming from the folk influences with the strings on dumb and all apologies) So all in all, its great to be open minded but i also do think coming in with that extra context and hearing kurts influences on this album might have made a better listening experience. Great review!

Serve the servants has one of the coolest vocal melodies ever

Yeah this album was NOT made for fans of Kid Cuddie and The Gorillas and Arctic Monkeys… it’s the literal opposite of that kinda music 😂 so not surprised that you didn’t mess with it that much
