Hi!

The heat wave is still going strong here.

My phone and laptop are constantly overheating so I’m very much looking forward to upcoming days to finally record this month’s video!

I feel quite weird updating you on my sketchbook while I haven’t shared overdue June’s rewards yet but I figured it makes more sense to do that than to not post for weeks!

Rewards are coming this week and if you subscription expire before it happens, don’t worry, I’ll just send you digital rewards via email.

I also have some long overdue things to share, such as step by step pictures of some of my illustrations.

With that being said, let’s take a look at my sketchbook.

Lots of lemons!

as you already know, this month’s theme are lemons, so I’ve been sketching a lot of them before committing to final illustrations.

I had an urge to draw some profile view portraits!

At least one of them is quite anatomically incorrect, but it doesn’t matter!

Oh, to think that I used to think I’d pursue becoming a portraitist one day.

Luckily I switched to botanical drawings (it was almost exactly 5 years ago)!

A small study of willow gentian!

 I just love this flower.

It looks majestic and reminds me of Tatra Mountains, where I usually spot them.

It definitely needs to be studied further, but I quite enjoyed creating this spread!

Fruits and houseplants! Definitely one of my favorite sketchbook spreads I’ve ever made.

I used to draw houseplants all the time and now I find myself doing it occasionally. It’s time to change that!

What I like about this spread is the placement of elements. I like how some of them overlap!

and the last page of this sketchbook!

This illustration is quite big compared to others but I wanted to finish the sketchbook with something a bit simpler!

Completing this 32 pages sketchbook took me exactly 3 months and I already started another one.

My new sketchbook has 98 pages and is actually a proper sketchbook from an art store, yayy!

I’ll show you this sketchbook and some sketches next time!

(spoiler: most of the sketches I’ve made so far are just lemons)

Now, let me finish this post with some drawings.

I shared a peek of this one on my IG stories but something seemed off about it.

I added a few more layers of darker yellow and added a blue star and it’s looking better!

It’s just a half of the spread in my square sketchbook but I wanted to share it now anyway.

And here’s an illustration inspired by one of the sketchbook spreads you saw above!

I really (like, really) liked the idea of things in the illustration overlapping.

I’m not quite happy with colors I chose for the plant pots, but other than that I like it and making it was such nice, much needed side quest! :D

Usually when I’ve been focusing on one theme, I find myself feeling the need to draw something different (sometimes unusual) for no particular reason.

Well, I think the reason might be to just reset my mind!

Right now I’m working on lemon themed illustrations and I’m illustrating 3 botanical books (like, field guides!!!), each focused on one plant.

Basically I’ve been drawing 4 plants over and over again, so no wonder I’m drawn to making portraits and experimenting with spread layouts!

My mom is visiting us next week and we’re going to go for some hikes if the weather will be nice!

I’m hoping to gather tons of inspiration there.

Thank you so much for your support even in these quieter months.

I’ll be updating you again later this week!

Love,Marta

Hi! Oh, it is! Your absence has been noticed for sure! I truly appreciate your comments and enthusiasm! ♥ As for the lemons, thanks for the feedback and you’re 100% right!! Actually while drawing the lemon on the left I’ve noticed it’s getting a biiit too close to the middle of the sketchbook and I didn’t wanted it to bleed to another page, so I had to make it shorter than I intended! It’s a bit too round for sure! :D But it was a great exercise for coloring nonetheless ♥♥

I feel you! :D I usually do the same and don't care about it either! This time I wanted to make this design ♥super clear♥ to be able to turn it into a sticker later on. Well, as we can see... it didn't work out, lol :D

I really like both houseplant drawings and the Gentiana one!! I'd looove to see you choose some forest/meadow plants for a theme in the future someday, there are so many beautiful ones that are perhaps less well known ❤️

Fascinating that you used to want to be a portraitist. What made you swap? Love these lemonnssss, so pretty. 🍋🌈🌷✨

I love the round lemons! Not accurate but super cute! 🍋✨

aww, thank you! Oh, thanks for this suggestion!♥ I’ve been picking well known plants for each Patreon’s theme and I don’t know yet if I’m going to change that approach, but for sure I’ll be featuring more “niche” flowers in my other works! (spoiler: shop launch is coming this year, finally!) I was thinking about making a collection of prints, or maybe a zine featuring these less commonly known flowers, like woodland flowers, mountain flowers, flowers native to a particular area etc! Hmm but I might also dedicate one month here to for example woodland flowers. Wood anemone is one of my favorite among the. That’s definitely something worth considering. Thank you again for the feedback!

I know, right?! I wanted to give you a short answer but IT’S STORY TIME! As a kid I was OBSESSED with a field guide and took it to forest walks. This little book alone and living near the forest is what made me a botanical nerd. When I was learning how to draw I had a few attempts of drawing flowers but a comment made by a colleague made me believe that I’m bad at it so I just dropped it. (it wasn’t an art school, I’m actually an engineer and have a degree in math, lol) A few years later I spontaneously (almost unconsciously) started adding some houseplants/foliage to my portraits. I was just really into houseplants (I actually still am) :D Oh, about me being a potential portraitist… I quickly realized I was good at drawing a certain type of person but I might not be able to make a portrait of middle aged men. Also seeing fellow artists making portraits of for example married couples (and being very pleased about it!) made me realize it might be not a path for me. The idea of making such things just didn’t make me feel anything. At that time I was planning to niche down to drawing girls + plants. I don’t even know if there was a market for that! Right before I created an offer, out of the blue I couldn’t stop thinking about the book from my childhood I almost forgot about at this point!! I spontaneously (again :D) made an illustration inspired by it. It was my first 100% botanical illustration. It was July 2019. Since then I made only a few portrait illustrations and completely ditched the idea of offering portraits. Nothing there was planned. It seems like it was just meant to be! Oh I need to find that field guide book!!! It has to be somewhere in my parents house. Thanks for reminding me about all of this! I should make a post about this story plus examples of my works in this transition time!! :> If you want to see some examples now, just scroll down my IG feed! :D

I think a post telling this story is a great idea! I always love hearing about an artist's journey. Figuring out what subject matter you truly enjoy is a hard task for some. I understand completely. I'm still trying to figure it out myself! I'm glad you're drawing plants now. I can feel the love you have for them and they're beautiful. 🌱✨
