Hi. Talia Lavin, author of the new book “Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America," joins Katy and Cody to talk about Joe Biden pardoning his son Hunter, the Supreme Court's apparent approval of laws targeting trans youth, and why the Christian Right is now an even bigger threat during a second Trump presidency.

definitely gonna be reading Talia's books - they're right up my alley. sounds like they'd pair well with Fantasyland - How America Went Haywire (highly recommended). really enjoyed this episode!

How does Idaho plan to ban travel. Are they literally going to have checkpoints at every state line interstate/road? Traffic is going to lead to a rebellion

Thank you for finding and inviting guests like Talia. It is good to hear from another reasonable and thoughtful person. It is good to know that people who do difficult and societally valuable journalistic work exist. I agree with the point towards the beginning of the show that Biden's pardon of his son would have felt less hypocritical if he had used his lame duck opportunity to do a bunch of good, which is within the possibilities of the pardon powers even when true justice reform is not. But then also the point later, shaming people for hypocrisy only works on people who are capable of shame and politician apparently often lack, suppress or lose that ability.

I'm just some random guy on the internet but I love in Iowa and directly interacted with the types of evangelicals that are talked about in this episode. I was in deep I don't think I ever seen the more political side of it because I left that life behind around the time I was 22 before I really learned how to participate properly in politics. To give context my best friends dad was an evangelical pastor and two of my former best friends became pastors and I still have contact with one who is very religous. I remember having racist coded conversations about how Obama was the antichrist and taking about demons and all that junk like it was a regular thing. All this to say what is said in this episode rings very true and I can easily imagine the types of Christians that you are talking about.

Gotta say everyone, I'm not going to listen or watch anything you put out related to the election or politics for some time Nothing about this is funny and I can't watch it all. I've unsubscribed from everything on YouTube include you guys. I'm reporting any news in my feed relating to politics as "pornography" or "violent" sources. I'm still paying your team (and others) and will continue to because I love what you're doing, but I can't handle the content. I hope you and everyone else are alright, but I also have to practice self-care.

Yes. As a former pastor… when you ask “they can’t believe that, right?”, yes, they do believe it. And so much worse. Figuring that out is part of the former pastor part.

How can you talk about Joe Biden being bad without talking about the genocide?! Edit: I also think I agree with Katy entirely on the pardon.

NGL the term 'Demoncrat' sounds totally badass & I would wear it as a mark of pride as an anti-theist.

First hand feelings of Agreement with Talia - I was raised in the Evangelical community ("E-Free" sect that believed we were already in the "postmillennialism" aka we're in the "end times" waiting for the 2nd coming). The INTENSITY they brainwash within the religion of this active warfare is the very basis of the religion. They revere Jewish people yet believe they are misguided. The goal is to prostelatize and bend society towards their idea of "righteousness" to save as many christians as possible. They do not believe that most people will be saved, and they don't actually want many of them to be because they believe it's been predetermined who will already go to heaven before they were even born in most cases -your name is in the "book of life" or it is not and you are either supposed to come to God in your lifetime or you are not supposed to. They EXPECT violence to happen over religion and embrace the idea that war will wipe the earth and prepare to die for it. Many are pushing for rebuilding of Zion and the temple in Jerusalem and know that political domination will cause it as they believe this will cause the coming. I remember being taught as a child to "put on the armor of God", the pieces of armour would be listed on a poster in every Sunday school room. To prepare myself to be persecuted and eventually beheaded for an expected declaration of faith, as that would be the option if you weren't swept up in the rapture they were awaiting for already. Every moment was preparing you spiritually for rejecting secularism and grooming you to be a soldier of God. And this WAS NOT a small sect. This was the basis of the majority of baptist christian sects, some just more in line than others. Revalations is interpreted constantly for modern day events, and the digital revolution of the 90s is often seen as the awaking of the abilities of "the beast". That is their reality they live in, and that is the reality they vote towards. Violence is expected, war is wanted, and extremism is the path they believe will push them there. And quite frankly, they will hitch their wagons to any ability to push policy towards that, which is why they will overlook the moral qualms of many that they vote for with blind eyes. They do not see trump as the anti-christ, but instead as one of the great kings that will hasten in the 2nd coming. I very much look forward to picking up Talia's audiobook. Thank you for having them on the podcast.
