For the next episode of EMN we’d love to hear what you guys are doing to break up the monotony of the lockdown. How are you keeping yourself and your family entertained/stimulated? What creative ways do you have fun? Have you started any weird new hobbies?

Thank you! We love you very much.

Honestly, I'm not. The slog is what helps me cope. I get up, I make videos for my students, I run live Q&a sessions, I play video games, I sleep. Rinse repeat.

Christopher Murrie

I have been reading a short story every morning, working my way through the works of Clark Ashton Smith. Nothing distracts from the pandemic like stories about necrophiliac wizards...

I bought a recurve bow right before the shutdown in the interest of learning how to do something fun and potentially useful. It’s become a great way for me and some of my laid off coworkers to stay connected as the two I’m closest with are avid bow hunters.

I have been working on getting back to my writing, and finally writing down the stories I have had in my mind for years. It is difficult because I still care for my grandfather and great grandmother during the evening when I am not working or writing, but it is really nice to see words hit the page again.

I've been singing opera in a chicken voice for my Facebook friends

I adopted a 6 month old kitten named Ollie (short for Ollivander) from a shelter right before they closed for the quarantine, so it's mainly keeping an eye on him! If I'm not sketching, trying to make some freelance artworks, some related and unrelated to the crisis, it's usually been re-adjusting my sleep schedule to make sure he's not getting into too much muschief. Also, just finished listening to the audiobook of "Just Kids" by Patti Smith and am trying to write poetry and short stories based on some meditation practices.

I still have my job and have managed to not get sick so I've been luckier than others. Using the opportunity to get sober. That freed up time for exercising, training the dog, writing manuscripts, reading, and doing volunteer work delivering food to those that are impacted more by the crisis. Also helped start a local DSA chapter in Jackson, MS.

I'm fortunate to have a backyard and live close to a wooded trail, so I've been sitting outside with my pup every morning while I drink my coffee to listen to the birds and watch the squirrels. I recently downloaded the Audubon's bird watching app and I'm trying to identify all the different birds I see and hear each morning.

I had a lot of introvert, one person hobbies anyways...cross-stitch, puzzles, reading. But I had been looking forward to getting out more and exploring my new (moved in November) city once the weather was nice. Nope, apparently I need to stay in and sew! So I'm making seasonal things to decorate my apartment and eventually the office. Being creative in ways that make me happy is what's keeping me going right now.

Fiona Matthews

Both my roommate and I are still working, but we've been keeping entertained with pokemon go around the neighborhood. We also discovered all of our crafting hobbies come together for a new hobby: puppet making!

DragonSpartan90

I've been playing a online DnD campaign that my friend has organised, building models and taking my dogs for a walk. And a LOT of anime.

Kevin Ledig

I started playing Watch Dogs on my computer. It's a sandbox game based in Chicago. So I just go to all the bars and hang out, standing around as if I was really at a bar.

I work out and read theory, even more now that I don't feel as obligated to be social. Quarantine is suiting my general lifestyle pretty well. The crisis is also showing the corporate fetishism and inadequacy of the government almost everywhere. I'm lucky to be Danish, we have a robust economic safety net and socialised medicine, I can only imagine how fucked you must feel. Hugs to you ❤️

Fred Hay

Been doing a llooooooot of mushrooms and crying (usually different moments), lot of cooking. Wrong time to have become single really as well.

Crystal

I'm very fortunate to work in an industry that is doing okay so I've been trying to find different ways to safely support local businesses and it's surprisingly been a great kick in the pants to start learning French again. I've been doing lots of conversation classes online and ordering books from my local bookstores (currently reading Harry Potter à l'école des Sorciers). It's been a really great way to help keep things fresh. Even if the rest of my day gets pretty monotonous, I always learn something new.

Kim Fritz

I’ve become obsessed with Stardew Valley. It’s so calming, and reminds me of 8bit games from the OG Nintendo. You just build a farm and solve problems. It’s the best form of escapism.

purplehayes

Fortunate to still be working, so that helps. Other than that I try to listen to a new/different album every day. I'm also trying to learn piano and Japanese, but I was doing that before quarantine. The other main thing is Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing is basically therapy at this point.

Paul Merritt

I joined a voice-over program so I've been practicing takes for various scripts each day! Also been playing lots of Animal Crossing and CSGO, very similar games y'know. Currently looking into fostering a cat because I live alone currently.

Collin Wynnychuk

I started doing my training modules from home. I have had the good fortune to not only keep my job, but get hired as a trainee after being a casual for three years. So, I can close my blinds, put on the fireplace channel and relearn laboratory safety.

Sophia Gulsunda Baramidze

I've been using tabletop simulator for board game nights with my family since we're scattered around the country. And my partner and I take walks in the park when the weather's nice which we've recently augmented to include scattering birdseed to feed the birds. (With no picnics and scraps to eat, we figured they could use it.) Oh! And to break up the monotony of daily yoga (I'm really not an exercise person) I've been leaving the door open for my cats to come pester me. So they crawl over and under me while I do my yoga, and I give them pets and kisses. Brings me joy, if not an effective workout 😅.

After putting in 70 hour weeks building various applications and samples for other departments to use in response to the Covid-19 crisis-planning for our hospital, things have slowed down to the point where I can go outside, turn over the soil in the garden, move baby tomato plants out of the vermicompost and into their own trays, and dig up dandelions when I need to take out frustrations while still acknowledging the reality that anything I fix will break again in a few weeks (through more dandelions sprouting up).

The Constable

My regular players for Star Trek Adventures can’t meet in person anymore, so I’ve been GMing our sessions every Saturday night for three weeks straight. It’s a lot of writing and prep which gets the creative juices flowing, and it’s good social experience for us. Funny thing is, we’ve met as much in a month as we normally do in six because one of us lives an hour away and we’re normally busy, so that’s an improvement for us during this crisis. I also decided to try and start building and painting my first model - the NX-02 Columbia from Star Trek. It’s going well and I’ll have a cool object I built to admire and put in my classroom if I ever get to go back. Notice also that both of these involve escaping into a world where poverty, warfare, disease and racism are a thing of the past. I mean they completely got rid of money - a thing we just made up!

newdarkcloud

I've been knee deep into building up my Animal Crossing island, and Ring Fit Adventure for work outs is something I genuinely look forward to as my way to wrap up a day.

Ummmm... so I breed freshwater aquarium fish. I am lucky enough to have a small patio on which I can grow plants. I have been learning how to sprout some veggies and fruits that you would buy at the store from seed that I would have normally thrown away (like bell peppers). So I water these vegetables with the waste water from my fish. Plants grow very well with all those nutrients! And I’ve been sharing excess plant starts with friends who want them. I wish I could share excess water, too!!!

Avian

I have taken up blacksmithing, got a whole propane powered foundry set up. I have been melting down things like aluminum, copper and brass, have made a few tools and knives. it's been weird, but fun! Also been playing Animal Crossing, a looooot of Animal Crossing

Zhang

I tried working out and doing zombies couch to 5k that got cut short because i got a stress fracture. I purchased a cabouchon cutting machine but I'm too depressed to get out of bed 90% of the time so mostly just reading fanfic on my phone.

Douglas Lilly

I'm very, very fortunate to be able to work from home, so that keeps me pretty sane. Besides that, I've started scheduling out a few habits I'm trying to develop. Alerts for morning meditation, alerts for pushups (50/day goal to start). I've also scheduled out time for creative and social projects. These give me the routine that I've always lacked and keep me from just seething at Twitter for hours on end (which is what I was doing with a lot of my downtime for the first few weeks).

Josh Mollenkamp

We fostered a rescue bunny and ended up adopting. Playing DnD via zoom. I think the thing that has kept us sane the best has been planning the tiny home we hope to build once this allows for it. There is something calming about working toward and envisioning a brighter future on the other side.

LoveYourFood

There have been a lot of video games and TV show binges, for sure. I'm in the furry community (and thanks so much for the excellent Worst Year Ever episodes about furries), which is primarily an online fandom, and really found its home on the internet, but also has a very important in-person social aspect in the form of conventions, events, parties, and meets. Right now, none of those is possible, and major furry cons around the world have been cancelled for most (if not all) of this year, which is really putting a strain on the community as a whole, but lots of people have started having virtual meet-ups in places like Zoom, Discord, VRChat, Twitch, and Picarto. Artists are drawing on stream and having chats, DJs are doing music streams, and there have been a bunch of nights of things like JackBox games and even singalongs. We're not getting all the hugs we normally would, but at least it's something.

Izit Spooky

At the moment I'm keeping myself sane by trying to add Yoga and Tai Chi to my exercise routines. Partially for the added mindfulness, but also to try and stop myself from getting bored. Other than that there's been a lot of time reading or playing animal crossing and Breath of the wild.

Yinzer

My life has not changed at all except I now wear a mask at work and wash my hands more often.

Daniel Lewycky

It's super cliché but I'm taking a photo every day with some film I had lying around, it get it developed once this thing ends.

Scougs

I'd say silently screaming into the void between cookies.. but that might not be what you're asking for.

I'm chronically ill (Fibromyalgia, et al.) & work at home, so don't normally get out of my house that much (compared to other people). However, this Pandemic is seriously stressful for me 'cause my dysfunctional immune system's certain to go nuclear if I contract the virus. When I do go out, it's with #WearingAMask, #WashingMyHands & damn well keeping my #SocialDistance. So when I'm not watching More News, or scaring the shit out of myself studying the science of the SARS-CoV 2 Virus (https://analytics-tools.shinyapps.io/covid19simulator/), or watching the news (WTF is going on with people in the US..!?), I'm keeping fit (Yoga-ish stretching, weights, etc.), studying (free online courses), doing housework, molecular gastronomy (yum), watching new/old TV series/movies on DVD/Netflix, Computer games on my old PS3 (Batman Arkham Series, Prototype & Assassin's Creed - mostly) communicating with friends & family, listening to music, dancing (with myself) & - of course - Reading (I go through a couple of novels a day, plus some interesting nonfiction). If there's one thing I'm doing way more of, during the #StayAtHome, it's chatting, commenting & otherwise discussing stuff online (couple of hours a day, at least). From chatting on dating apps, to having discussions on various (Animé, TV Show/Movie, Scientific, Medical, Literature, etc.) forums - even leaving comments on YouTube (...though not Facebook or Twitter...). There's so many people reaching out to communicate online or with apps. ...I dunno how I'd do without my mobile or computer - prob'ly go completely insane (I'm renting, so I can't even have a cat to have someone to talk to)...

I'm playing a Klei game called Oxygen Not Included, which is like micromanaging a survival base. Lends itself to some of my neuroses. I pulled out the cello I haven't played much since 6th grade like 16 years ago and I still remember the intro to Hedwig's Theme, which is neat. I've been sewing masks and crocheting cat couches. I still feel like I'm not doing as much as I could be, I spend a lot of time doom scrolling and some days I can't get out of bed. My depression swings between better and worse... I also was in the process of moving when the pandemic hit so I'm actually typing this now taking a break from loading a Uhaul full of stuff; in about half an hour, I'll be unloading it at a storage facility. Going through the crap I've accrued the past 20 years is maybe a monotony break? Extra monotony? It's 107°F today and the storage space is not climate controlled so hopefully I'll be able to get through all of that at my place...

As a contractor, my home is usually the last to see work done to it! Now I am free to work on MY home. Tore out the carpets in the living room and family room and put down 5/8 ths solid bamboo since it is a better renewable resource than oak. Then I painted! Then baseboards! Now all I need to do is: replace all the windows, put in a new electrical system, put on a new roof and then I can remodel the kitchen......

Pooch

I built a yarget to throw my hatchet at, does the trick. Also I drove the other way home from work to change it up

Amanda Shore

I've joined up with Mutual Aid LA and will start helping deliver needed items to people, which along with school (online and not nearly as engaging or educational as it was on campus) helps me feel productive between hours of Horizon Zero Dawn and Tomb Raider.

ローラ (Laura)

At first it was just try to hold on while my brain went through an anxiety meltdown, but now that I've gotten used to the new level of stress, I've been more productive. These are all things I also did in the Before Times, but now I have more time to devote to them... I'm learning Japanese, and working on art and Japanese calligraphy (called shodo). I've really been enjoying the calligraphy, because since the paper and brush are pretty unforgiving, you have to really still yourself and keep the correct posture, which helps with avoiding panicking. I also found a shodo teacher in Japan (I'm in the US), so I've gotten a lot better.

Im still currently working at a factory that makes the Patriot Missile. Some people wear masks here. HR brings them in for first shift, and by the time I come in with the rest of 3rd shift, theres no masks left. Repeat. The ones finally brought in for us says "fashion item" on the package. So. I mean. Hurray. It's been very frustrating at my work but I am fortunate to continue to get a paycheck with any amount of overtime I want (until Nebraska finally hits their peak) so my work life hasnt changed. I find myself smoking weed at my consistent speed, but I have been drinking more. You know what's not a sign of depression? Drinking alone. I walk my German Shepherd quite a bit now as well but Im no longer able to take her to socialize. Lastly, Ive played more video games than I have since I was a teenager. Sweet, sweet video games.

Burrito

I’ve been challenging myself to watch and read NEW stuff instead of just rewatching King of the Hill, Seinfeld, and Community for the 800th times. Devs was outstanding. Everybody who likes sci-fi should watch Devs. I’ve also been diving into self-help literature, trying to come out of this a more rounded person than I went into it as.

James Mclaughlin

I've been cleaning the house, learning to bake/cook with my wife. The only crazy thing I'm doing is going through a bunch of 16mm film reels to find out what is on them. The project involves sitting in a garage, smoking weed, and watching movies. So far I've seen Dr. Strangelove, The War at Home, I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, White Heat, and several others.

Warren Peace

I'll stay away from depressing details, but I'm 29 years old and I'm stuck in essentially a nursing home with a spine injury. I'm isolated from my family and I'm surrounded by a bunch of old people who are really at risk for infection. I'm really worried about them and all the faces I see are covered with masks and face shields. So there isn't much to do to break up the monotony. I'm mostly using a VPN to almost double my Netflix selection and to include Doctor Who, Avatar the Last Airbender and anything Studio Ghibli. I'm also using adult coloring books which are surprising entertaining during an apocalypse! Your show is making my time here so much better! I hope y'all are doing okay. Thank you so much for your persistence during this crisis. I love all of you!

Embers Eves

Slowly finding ways to express femininity without doing much spending and dreaming of when and if I can do more.

Jeff Prillaman

Growing weed is quite rewarding and helps my siblings, neices and a few friends' finances a bit. I'm in rural Blue Ridge Mountains and so social distancing is pretty normal for me. Bonus: you can grow much higher quality than you will generally see if you do not have access to a dispensary.

Keith Wood

I’ve started diving more into some creative pursuits, particularly drawing (Procreate on iPad is amazing!) and playing guitar a lot more. I’m going to dip my toe in the synthesizer world but it’s a little mind boggling. One interesting aspect of shelter in place is that my neighbors feel a lot more like neighbors. We interact more than ever before and support each other in small ways (e.g., making bulk orders of food together). One neighbor and I are collaborating on making cloth masks so I’m getting a sewing machine. If only any of these activities could mitigate the COVID related weight gain, the COVID 19 (lbs).

Alli

My family started a crafting challenge. We all make something we’ve never made before using the stuff we have on hand and then meet up on zoom to drink, talk about the project, and give out “awards”. So far I’ve learned how to make a rug outta shirts. (Use more then 3 or your rug will be very tiny and not good at being a rug.)

Dan Haddix

I'd like to say yes, but really I've been working less and playing video games more. Previously my hobbies were pool and bowling, which require you to be out with people, so I can’t do those. (my house isn’t big enough for a pool table)

Erik Pohanka

I've been exploring the natural areas of home town and making lots of observations on this great citizen science app called iNaturalist. Take a photo and upload it, the app will try to identify what you're seeing, whether it's plants, animals, fungi, etc. Anything living!
