I've signed up to go back to school (virtually) in the fall to become a history teacher!

Last time I checked in I was looking into fostering a cat. Fortunately, there's been a huge increase in foster parents in my area so there are no cats in need of a foster. So I decided to adopt a cat instead!

Eddie Anton

I bought a house, and started planning a non profit rescue!

I now play d&d with 8 of my friends from high school, only one of us had ever played before, we're all in our 30s, before this I'd only see one of them regularly, most of them between zero and a handful of times a year, we play together every week now

Ryan LaZur

Started training for a marathon (for whenever we're allowed to do those again) and have lost 10 pounds so far!

I live in an apartment building with a far older demographic than myself. There is a common table on my floor near the elevators, which when the whole covid situation started, people began putting food items out for anyone who needed them. I immediately started stocking this table since I was, and am, in a position to do so. After a while this died down, so I put a note out asking if anyone was still in need or the need had passed. There was a concerted response that people were still in need and so grateful of this effort. This has now turned into our small food shelf kind of constant situation. More & more people give & everyone seems to be loving it. It feels great to help my tiny community of people in my apartment building.

I've been connecting more with my best friend. I fell in love with her upon second sight and we started hanging out just before Covid. Now we talk every day and share everything together. She is everything to me and I can't imagine this crisis without her.

Just as the quarantine started, my wife and I bought our first house. We're now moved in, unpacked, and somehow still have money in the bank. Wouldn't have thought a global pandemic would be so financially fortuitous for us, and if it keeps up we might get to get an even better interest rate in a few months!

Ok so get this: my friend mo has been redecorating to stay sane and so she has a ton of stuff she is getting rid of. So I get all the 'Hand-Mo-Downs'. In the past this has been her tv, desktop computer, a monitor for it, etc. Now I have a cute folding screen, another book shelf and finally another computer desk! Now I have room for all my monitors and laptops! I have three work laptops and a billion cables so working from home has been agony balancing on them. Fortunately this new desk with my old one gives me enough space so I'm not having to hook my computer to the TV just to get a screen I can code with. Best part is that since it scratched her monitor when she assembled it she named the desk MonitorThrister in homage to the desktop computer she gave me that has injured everyone that handles it: Bloodthrister. Thanks Mo lol! It's good to have impulsive buying friends.

I became a copy editor for an architecture journal! It's not much, but I get to work in a small way with some of the most interesting people in my field, and I might've found my passion.

I've had lots of free time, so I've been able to go help out my grandpappy. He's 91 and mostly blind and has a few dr appointments every week. Me coming up means he doesn't need to use LYFT or whatever. I've seen him more this summer than I'd seen him for multiple years put together. He lives about 5 hours north of me.

Since there hasn't been any pressure to go out and spend time with friends, I've been able to stick pretty well with a training program I started two weeks before everything closed here. This Sunday I was meant to participate in a Half-Ironman race for the first time in New York state. Instead, I'll be doing one in my home town. I'm making myself a number bib and writing my age on my calf and everything, as though it were the official one.

It’s been hard to focus on things that I can control, but I recently moved out of my parents, which was an extremely toxic environment for me. Now I feel free for the first time in my life and the most hopeful I’ve been in a long time. To celebrate, I started fostering a bunny!

Bryce Phillips

Since the pandemic I was finally able to move out of my dad's where I've been staying since graduation for the last year and a half and am finally loving with my best friend and feel like I have my freedom back

Angry Potat

I finally took the next step in my transistion, and filed the paperwork for a name change. And with things closed to in-person hearings, I don't have to worry about going down to a courthouse in person on the off chance that the judge doesn't just sign off on the order.

I bike commuted for 1-2 years before quarantine. After we started working from home, I kinda stopped biking at all for the first couple of months. But since May, I've taken the time to explore the surrounding neighborhoods and beyond, and now I ride more miles every week than I did when I was just commuting, so it's been a blast. I also decided to become a Patron in the middle of quarantine, so that's made me happy (and angry). Love y'all!

I've been able to create multiple things that have gone viral online while keeping myself from going viral in the real world. I have been very fortunate to have a job where I can work from home and at my own pace while our company continues to grow. I feel a little guilty about my situation right now because it stands in such stark relief from many of my friends and billions of people around the world. This has been a great lesson in humility and luck, and I hope I never forget it.

BingoFrog

Since I’ve been saving money by not taking a Lyft downtown to buy expensive drinks every weekend, I finally bought a new car! I live in central Texas and my last car didn’t have working AC so this was a much needed win.

Because my husband and I have been working through the confinement, and my family's expenses dropped significantly due to all the activities, restaurants and outings not happening, I managed to completely pay off my line of credit and accumulate a nice safety cushion. Also, sourdough is love and my garden is coming along quite nicely.

blossomshed

after trying to sort it out for the last couple years, this week I started an engineering degree through work! at the moment it's all distance delivered so it's a bit weird but it took so long to get this sorted that I'm so happy it's finally happening!!

To shorten a very, VERY long story, I think I'm finally starting to get my shit together. I had a really incredibly horrible childhood, and it messed me up for a really long time. It was difficult to make friends, or try to create any kind of relationship really. Take that trauma and mix it with a healthy dose of (clinically diagnosed) anxiety and depression, and you've got yourself a recipe for "fuck this, I'm never going outside again". Everything good in my life, I ruined, either intentionally or otherwise. However, over the past few months I've really focused on getting better, truly better, and I feel more confident and mentally healthy than I have in a very long time. In September, I'm going to be completing my placement semester for my Mental Health and Addiction college program, and this time I'll actually be ready.

Jeff Prillaman

I, and no doubt, THOUSANDS of others, are taking this time when we are staying home and the police have far less money (and having to make some priorities) to grow some top notch weed for my family and friends. Money will be tight and this will help everyone who otherwise might have to forgo creature comforts in lieu of groceries and electricity. I live out in the country.

Robert Keefer

The pandemic has led us to doing "Zoom dinners" where we set a laptop on the kitchen table and have a meal 'together' with remote friends, friends we likely would not have seen otherwise. I wish I'd thought of this years ago, but the pandemic has actually resulted in us 'dining with' friends and family would probably not have seen or talked to much this year. My wife set three rules: 1) no discussion of POTUS; 2) 15 minutes max on Covid-19; and 3) should only last about an hour.

Derek Lewis

The real coronavirus is the friends we made along the way! <3

I'm learning to weave on a rigid heddle loom. I resisted the hobby for years, but with unemployment I was able to justify getting the equipment. It's a lot of fun, and the fabric I've made so far makes me so happy

Lovecrafthobbit

I have none, I live in hell. I'm ok with not killing other people via in person exchanges though.

Emily Kugler

A friend who I used to see about 3 times a year max now has twice weekly game nights (and occasionally a third night for group watching National Theatre productions). Our conversations have been so helpful during this time. She really inspires me to keep creative. A third person in the group who I had only met once before is someone I now continue a friend. There’s an occasional fourth in the group who is a Biden supporter discovering anti-racism work. Those conversations can be frustrating but overtime she has show she is doing the work, growing and acting in good faith. Lots of other good things. The people I clicked with but didn’t always have time to catch up or collaborate more with are in my life more. I work better when I can talk out my ideas and team up with others. I am excited more than overwhelmed by the projects before me. And that is a really good change.

Forever Bulking

I started volunteering. 4 days a week I deliver food for our local food bank to people who can’t leave the house. Sometimes I wind up with spare bags of food because someone is on vacation so I give them out at homeless encampments. There is a very wholesome joy in seeing someone’s face light up because they got to have their favourite fruit for the first time in years.

My daughter (our first) was born a month into lockdown. The lead up to her birth was very scary because, for a time, hospitals were considering not allowing partners into the hospitals for births. As it was I had to get temperature screened at the door it was very tense - but it all worked out. And while the lockdown has been difficult it means that my wife and I have had a very dedicated three months with our little girl here at home.

Good-ish news: I should hopefully graduate with a PhD in microbiology by the end of the year, and am being considered for a post-graduate position in a city that's close to my family! The position involves working on making bacteria/fungi make valuable products from fermentation of dead plant matter in an attempt to make the process econimically feasible to use for industrial production!

I finished my master's degree in history this past spring. I had a pretty lengthy commute and the demands of being a graduate student (TA'ing, coursework, etc.) on top of the long drives were starting to really wear on my ability to center myself enough to do good research and organize sufficiently to write. The quarantine gave me sufficient time to write my thesis and not get lost in the mire of daily life. More than that, I learned that a lot of what I was getting out of graduate school was the community and conversation with other young, passionate people and I have tried to be more socially active (while still socially distant) with my comrades than before. The quarantine helped me learn that those relationships were just as affirming and validating as the work itself. The future of academia is uncertain at the moment, but it was a positive realization that it was the stress that made academia feel atomizing -- that the reward really was the friends I made along the way.

I Fight Horny Patron Names

I started gardening. I just have a tiny little balcony garden but I have already been able to grow a bunch of kale, Swiss chard, mint, and various microgreens. I also got back into running and fitness. These two things together have greatly helped with my health and outlook, as I look forward to waking up early each morning to make sure my plants are watered before the sun gets too high and I get my run in before I have too many excuses for myself. Making a dinner with produce from your own garden is really satisfying!

Josh Mollenkamp

I learned that the job I hate was essential and a global pandemic couldnt shake me out of it. So I finally took the step to quit and am attending grad school in the spring to become a substance abuse therapist.

Josh Mollenkamp

Also, please take vacation you guys. Or at least a break. Or whatever would help. Ya'll sound like you are struggling and need a recharge. the world will still be burning down around us when you get back. We love you very much. Also tell Robert I'm glad he's on the wall but he needs a break as well.

During the lock down I was sent home by my company but I was still paid regular hours. For three months I didn't have to work and was still getting paid. You know how they say that if people are given money but they don't have to work for it they'll lose their incentive to work? Well I now know that's bullshit. I lost 30 lb, and finished a tabletop game I had been trying to work on for 7 years. It turns out when I've got all the time in the world and I don't have to worry about money I actually did focus on myself and all of the things I had been wanting to do.

My girlfriend and I rescued a puppy in April and that has been great. Keeping us busy and hes such a good boy. I've also been able to work on my music and producing videos. It's been nice practicing while being unable to play publically. Rather than just practicing when I have a show, I've been practicing for the fun of it. That's been nice. We also started eating a mostly vegan diet and trying to have an hour of high level activity (bikes or running trails). Its been nice getting out into nature too, to avoid people, which has always been my favorite past time anyway. Love u all v much. Hope u can take a well deserved vacation soon.

I'm a paramedic in the Seattle/Tacoma area, and when Covid first "happened" in the USA, I worked at an emergency department about a mile from the epicenter. Thankfully my hospital took very strong precautions right away, something other hospitals did not (and they subsequently had a much harder time coping) but, and this is national news so I can share it, one of our ER physicians caught it, most likely from a patient, and very, very, very nearly died. We were honestly all just bracing for the bad news after we heard he was being placed on ECMO. He was young, healthy, and one of the most genuinely nice guys I've ever known. But he rallied, and when I was leaving the hospital to return to the field as a medic, he stopped by to say hello (he's not coming back to work until September at least) and I got to see him. I don't cry, but there were some crocodile tears. Apart from that, it's basically been horror stories with the job I work. Families losing loved ones, losing patients myself, my wife's furlough got screwed up and WA state got attacked by Russians trying to claim unemployment on everyone in the state, so we were living off my income alone on a brand new house we signed the closing documents on the day before the state shut down. Things were tight, we have had upside down Uhaul boxes as nightstands for a few months. I'm just thankful that I went from job security to job security during the pandemic.

Jax Uzpen

I managed to leave a not great relationship and buy my first house! One week into living on my own (with my kittens) I lost 5 lbs (from being able to fit food in the fridge and cook without hours of cleaning beforehand) and my stress level has plummeted. -Jax

With schools being closed it cut my work down from my main job (substitute teaching) and my side job (tutoring 16+ hours a week) to tutoring online for like 4-6 hours a week. So I started taking my hobby of streaming seriously. It doesn't really bring in any money, but ive met a lot of great people and I've built a nice little community so far.

My garden has brought me so much joy! I have a huge assortment of plants, including cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, pie pumpkins and even started an asparagus patch. It is delight to watch things grow and for that hard work be rewarded with delicious veggies is even better!

Nobbleberry Wot

Going to concerts all alone was a constant reminder that I don't have any friends, so it's really cool that everything has been cancelled. It's like I'm just spending every night in to be responsible with my money!

In January I started a medically monitored weight loss program through my healthcare provider, and by March I was barely keeping it together. When I was stuck inside, away from all of my food triggers, I got to buckle down and keep to my diet and exercise routine. I started quarantine at 280, and my last weigh in showed 230. -Rosemary

Before the pandemic, I published my first anthology of RPG adventures. Last month, the anthology was nominated for an ENnie, which is kind of like the ttrpg Oscars. I'm so proud of everyone who worked on the book. It's a little thing in the grand scheme of life, but it means a lot to me.

I was talking my dog, thane, for a walk when this little orange tabby came out of the woods and meowed at me, so I went and pet him. Next day I went for my nightly walk and I saw the same cat. Well, long story short a cat adopted me

Not getting sick. And I don't mean covid. I work in education this is usually flu season (southern hemisphere so we in winter now) and gross germy children full of snot noses and coughing everywhere. So finally, schools here in NZ forced children to *gasp* wash hands and sanitise and clean their desks every day. And for the first time in 18 years of teaching - I didn't get a cold or flu for the entire March - July period. Thanks Covid-19 for teaching people to not cough in my face or wipe hands onto surfaces and not clean it. Best year ever!!! Except for all the other people in the world suffering and dying.

TBH other than the obvious pandemicness going on and fearing for my family and friends, etc. the experience of being shut in for so long has been really transformational in a lot of ways. The freedom to work from home more helped my productivity such that I was able to get my first submission out in April (currently a PhD student) and in general I decided to take it on as a chance to have some personal breakthroughs, sort of like seeing stay-at-home as a metaphorical cocoon of sorts. There were a lot of lifestyle changes I had been telling myself I would make for years that I decided to finally get serious about when life changed so suddenly and drastically. My commitment has been to take this as an opportunity to do some serious soul-searching and habit revamping such that when this is finally over I am on a significantly better overall trajectory in terms of mindset and lifestyle than I was at the beginning. The results so far have been quite encouraging and although some times the cabin fever and isolation can be a bit overwhelming, taking the process on as a game of personal transformation has brought a really fulfilling context to a difficult time.

I was fired from a job for which I was unqualified, but tried to earn for a couple years. With the climate as it is, that prospect has been super scary. Since then, I've applied to online classes and will soon work towards something I actually love.

When the shutdown in LA began I was furloughed from the restaurant I worked for. I was out of work and not able to get through to unemployment so I took a hobby of tie dyeing shirts and started a small Instagram business to raise money for at first my coworkers but transitioned into raising money for various organizations and charities. I give 50% of the proceeds to a new cause every week and to date have been able to donate a little under $5000. It’s not a lot but being able to give back is about the only thing keeping me going through this. I’ve now decided to keep it going as long as people keep buying them and continue to always donate half. Even though I’m not in the best financial state it’s worth it to keep me sane.
