As someone who works regularly with the homeless population, I might honestly need to skip this one. You don't understand the shit these people go through on a daily basis. They are the strongest, most resilient members of our society, and just the idea of someone like Ted Cruz even speaking about them in ANY capacity makes me want to put a hole through a god damn wall.

So when the rich successfully eliminate the poor, which this appears to be the end goal of... what will they do? Start going Highlander on each other? What episode is the Star Trek clip from? I wanted to watch the entire franchise in order and I'm still stuck on season 1 of TOS but I might have to jump ahead now...

Hey Y'all, thanks for covering this. It isn't something i've seen a lot in other news sources but it's a topic close to home. I'm in Philly and we've had a homelessness crisis for a while that's only gotten worse. But our community has stepped up a lot which has been inspiring. There are a few encampments that have formed as somewhat autonomous zones that the city keeps trying to evict since they are in a park near fancy apartments and the art museum (aka the rocky steps). But many different groups in the city have come together to provide food, resources, and protection from the city and police. It's great to see our community fight for the homeless and yell at cops and out mayor. But it's also disheartening to watch the camps grow. Anyways, hope y'all staying as safe and sane as can be. Also ted is a ghoul. <3

And again, we care about homeless individuals when they're involved in uplifting stories where it's discovered that some of them clean up awfully nice or have talents or skills that you wouldn't think they'd have, being all scruffy and gross. But one person noticed them and they got a suit and everything's fine! Uplift porn at its finest. We love the individual stories of being given a hand out from a passing stranger, but hand outs from institutions? That's ridiculous!

It's really hard not to hope that these vile people will experience anything even close to what those who have lost their homes go through. And from Perth: It was November when Basil Zempilas wrote about how he would forcibly remove homeless people from the CBD if he was elected Perth's next lord mayor, calling rough sleepers a "disgusting" blight on the city. (https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/how-perth-s-lord-mayor-hopefuls-plan-to-tackle-one-of-the-city-s-toughest-issues-20200730-p55h04.html)

The freeway overpasses near me (and all over my city) are dotted with the newly homeless. I've been talking to some folks when I can and have heard they have problems getting potable water. Local homeless charities do not even return my calls for offers to volunteer. I've been giving them water purifiers, water/ice, food, first aid kits and some other stuff and checking in. No one is helping these people. In April I was rounding a U-Turn lane underpass in what is now a tent villiage in my town. I almost ran over a man laying in the street. I parked my truck and got out to talk to him and got him out of the street. He said he was dying. I had a mask and gloves on but I was scared of the COVID. Turned out he was dying of throat cancer. We got an ambulance. I'm pretty convinced it was a suicide attempt. Four months later the population under that bridge is 10x and they look a whole lot like my neighbors. The trend I'm seeing is folks that never expected to be homeless. Their numbers are growing by the day. Anyone who thinks they can hide from what's happening doesn't realize how close they are to this. IMO, if you can't put your hands on near a half million in cash right now (and maybe even if you can), the likelihood of abandonment by our system is fast coming for you. We are only as good as the care we provide to those in need. Take note of who is having their lives marginalized so rapidly. Stand up for them. Ich bin ein ausländer. Thanks for the report Cody and crew. You're doing good work.

I hate actually seeing anti-homeless ideas spill over into my mind. I hate having a creeping thought when I drive in Providence or Boston and see a homeless person and wish they weren't there because all I've ever heard is that it's their fault and they did something wrong. If you talk to any homeless person in an honest capacity it's heartbreaking. I bought books from a homeless guy in Manhattan a few years ago and he told me about how the book I chose was his favorite when he was my age, about to go to college, and that still sticks with me and haunts me. It could happen to anyone, and our society makes it impossible to hear their stories, and it makes me feel sick.

Status Coup did a story of a guy whose wife had a degenerative disease and he was her full time care taker. But couldn’t apply for it because he was spouse. When COVID hit, they were going to be behind on their rent. However, they were able to raise money for the rent on time. He still wanted them out and shut off their plumbing (which I didn’t know was legal?). So they moved. And while the guy was cleaning the house they were kicked out of, his wife died. This is America. Fuck yeah?

Yes, the primary problem in a homeless person’s life is that they don’t have a home. It sounds trite but providing a home allows other problems to be addressed that could never be solved on the streets. Also DS9!!!!
