So I’m an accountant and I have to sign a number of disclosures regularly at work, assuring that I’m not working with clients I have a conflict of interest with. Like, the CPA exam has entire swaths of material about conflicts of interest and recusal from those engagements - even the appearance of a conflict gets the stink eye. This all started in the accounting industry after the Arthur Andersen scandal. If you’re caught doing shady shit, [theoretically] you can lose your license for it. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act put a lot of regulations in place so accountants/auditors couldn’t do shady shit. It was an act written by Congress. So you can imagine the slow-blinking surprise when I learned that Congress does not have the same level of disclosure *and* consequence for what really is insider trading. I know they’re like…hypocrites and all, but how do you not write a bill combatting a professional advantage for stock trading and the not go “wait a minute.” Unless the answer is that Congress did go “wait a minute” and then went “nah lol.”

Thoughts I had about this thing I watched: 1. Congress gets to vote on when to give themselves pay raises. So I don't have strong hopes on stock legislation. 2. They'll pass it two days after they've all figured out a way to work around it. (No spouses or kids allowed either? No problem, time to start calling up second and third cousins to do their trading for them.) 3. I never realized just how much Ben Shapiro looks and talks like a ventriloquist dummy come-to-life. It's truly creepy and terrifying. 4. "Beep-boop, motherfucker!" is how we should all start cursing at each other. Especially out of context.
