Hi. Dani Fernandez (@msdanifernandez) joins Katy and Cody to talk about avoiding nihilism and having hope for the future, microdosing psilocybin, and why kids shouldn't have to start school at 8:00 in the morning (even though it means we're agreeing with Marco Rubio).

I tended to live a very quarantined life before the pandemic, only leaving the house once a month, and was one of those people used to the burnout. An interesting side effect of the pandemic was definitely a ton of people sharing resources on how to better deal with the mindstate that I'd been trapped in for almost a decade. I've actually grown in my mental health since the pandemic simply by virtue of knowledge gain from things being shared and just a feeling of community I haven't had in a long time.

Jesus, that poem was so bad; nice to know that alleged artist Bono does not understand metaphors

When it comes to the idea that being poor is more expensive, I beg you, look up the Vimes Boots Theory. I love discworld, and this is something that was touched upon by the author Terry Pratchett. A part of the quote is as follows: ""A man who could afford $50 had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in 10 years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet." This was Capt. Samuel Vimes' boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

So...I love this channel, and Cody and Katy and Robert. Been listening for years and pay $60 a year for the extras....White nihilism? Isn't philosophy supposed to apply to everyone? Does the idea that there is no inherent purpose or meaning to life not make sense if your skin color is different? If she's saying that she's tired of clap backs from nihilists when she is trying to keep her chin up and spready positivity, I totally understand that. But white nihilism? The hell?

This reminded me of something I learned in a therapy session: there is a difference between fresh trauma and settled trauma. With fresh trauma, often people don't even realize what is going on. Everything is wrong, things changed, their skin doesn't fit right, everything is hollow and distorted. They don't understand how. So things like hope and healing feel like mockery. It's unobtainable and pointless. But once the trauma settles, it's like a maze you know the route for. You're trapped in the walls, but you've walked this path before. You know where the dead-ends are. Rational is a relative term. When it is fresh and you are empty-- hopelessness makes sense. It doesn't make lashing out okay or anything, but like. Accounting for the people who are traumatized and aren't just assholes, trauma is literally a form of brain damage caused by too much cortisol (/oversimplified). There is no self-awareness there. They are cornered, scared animals. Every interaction is a last stand-off. I 'kinda get it' because when my trauma was fresh I was unpleasant to be around. Sometimes in a very ugly way. I'm much better now, but shoot. It took a very long time to settle there. But I also understand being very angry at them. Especially when it comes from the sort of people who weren't very compassionate to begin with. Especially in the social media funnel. The country is going through a mass-traumatizing event with no support network and lacking mental healthcare and they're all online hurting each other and others without self-awareness. It will take so much. Just... it will take so much. I had just gotten some chamomile seeds. I was planting them in a little pot while listening to this episode. So maybe in a few months the world will still contain evil, but my windowsill will have flowers. Someday, I hope the trauma settles and they learn how to grow things too.

White nihilism? Dani, IMO, you're making stuff up. Nihilism is nihilism, and it doesn't have race attached to it. Cynicism is my jam. It's a step above nihilism at least. I always feel a bit hopeful in the Spring.

Sidekick

wow the comments on this suck. This was a great episode.

Personally, I find the idea of white nihilism quite interesting from a sociological standpoint. A form of attention-seeking “pseudo-nihilism” that is brought on by privilege and is concentrating on only one issue, not understanding that all aspects of society are connected. Saying “what you’re doing is useless because we’re all fucked anyway” on Twitter isn’t really nihilism, because a nihilist wouldn’t even bother with making their opinion known as they would believe it to also be pointless. I think arguing semantics in this instance is blatantly missing the point. However, I also think we should not demonize these people. This creates a straw man argument and dehumanizes every individual that gives this kind of response. It is indeed counterproductive to say such things, but that’s the nature of 99% of Twitter interactions anyways. Also, that doesn’t mean that their attitude isn’t motivated by deep fear and sorrow at the state of the world. Instead of saying “fuck you” to these people, maybe saying “I hear you, but two things can be true at the same time” would open a line of dialogue instead of encouraging further division within the left.
