Hi. New York Times culture reporter Dave Itzkoff (@ditzkoff) joins Katy and Cody to talk about the TV streaming wars, George Carlin's lasting influence on politics, and why the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard verdict is a huge setback for victims of abuse, women, logic, and everyone else not already mentioned.

I call my cats 'Bub' sometimes. I also call them 'cat' and 'get the hell out the way' and 'knock it OFF!' and 'Get the hell outta there'

It's interesting to see people who didn't watch the trial decide Johnny Depp was not abused. One of her pics had the bruise kit makeup kits in it. She slipped up and admitted she used it. She got called out on the stand for using photo editting software. She openly mocked in recordings that he wouldn't believe her. As a survivor of domestic abuse hearing people be like "yeah I avoided watching any of the evidence, but since Johnny Depp's a man he was the abuser". Like... their was visual evidence of her abuse. "tell people Johnny, tell the judge and jury that I johnny depp am a victim of abuse. See if they believe you" ... there's abuse victims that are speaking out rn because they feel they finally can. Real weird to have an opinion on something you avoided watching evidence of. Disappointed. A show that usually thoroughly researches stuff decides that avoiding information is the way to go. Ya'll in the minority. Thank God. Maybe consider that men can be abused. As a victim of abuse when I was younger from a woman who knew people wouldn't believe me, I'm disappointed but not surprised at your reaction.

Last time you mentioned Patriot I immediately binhed the whole thing and it was one of the best decisions I've made based on podcast info.

I tried as hard as I could to avoid anything about the Depp/Heard trial, because I knew the sheer volume of dirty laundry being aired between this pair of damaged people would be unhealthy for anyone to consume, even in small doses. I think it doesn't belong to part of the #metoo movement because it was a case of married people being shitty to each other (literally?), and not an example of someone hording power over a subordinate. While they were married, they both had power over each other's reputation and career, and now both careers are just totaled because they both self destructed. The only winners in this story have been TMZ, and the informants they will keep paying for celebrity 🔥💩🔥.

I see others already criticized the Depp take, my comment is about the contradiction. There really isn't any, as far as I know. The winnings Amber won were from Depps council claiming there was a setup for the police at the second home visit, that would have involved friends and acquaintances of Heard planting or corroborating false evidence. This couldn't be proven legally, therefore a defamation claim was proven for Heard. This doesn't contradict the points of defamation that won Depp his claims, they were separate. As yall said, it will be challenged by Heard legally, and she very well may win. I just felt the pod defended her today with out a lot of concrete information given, and ignored a large part of what this case presents. The importance of understanding abuse can come from both sides of the gender spectrum in many forms, and we shouldn't absolve women's active role, at times, in both verbal and physical abuse by glorifying their morality. Love you guys, appreciate the work you do, and the information yall bring to the table, just would love a more thought out take on this, whichever side ya land on. Thank you!

I rushed to Reddit after better call Saul episodes but did not like a lot of people’s takes so I stopped

I think that Cody and Katy did think about their take, a lot of people just disagree with them. I also can see in a response that it was said that it seemed to be a complicated case involving physical and verbal abuse to/from both of them, per the two main trials. I would agree. They didn't say that because Heard is a woman and Depp is a man, that he abused her and not the other way around. They said that in this case of defamation, heard was found guilty of defamation (right?). But they also said they believe that she was abused by him and that was found to be valid. I agree there is a contradiction.

For those of us who needed a balm for the soul after Game of Thrones, /r/freefolk has been a godsend.

Was surprised and delighted to feel hope in hearing this one, ty!!

I find it hard to care even one iota for the super wealthy. They could beat each other to death and the world would undeniably be a better place.

All of you should have a snack of your choosing for talking about this trial with nuance.

I live with someone who’s got a Narcissistic personality disorder. It’s very very easy to be disappointed in her, to feel like a victim at her hands and to want to lash out and punish her. What she needs is patience and support. I wish our society had more people with evolved emotional responses. We need to react with more compassion. We love to react with disappointment and judgement. Whether it’s in our personal lives or social spheres, we need to practice staying on the same team with a desire to educate and support, not condemn and run away. Boundaries are awesome and healthy for both parties, mudslinging without compassion is bad for everyone.

They are both narcissistic abusive assholes 🤷🏾‍♀️

Types of relationship abuse: Physical abuse Emotional and verbal abuse Sexual abuse Financial abuse Digital abuse Stalking https://www.loveisrespect.org/resources/types-of-abuse/ Destroying property, sharing private images taken with/out consent, design social traps to harm other relationships, and isolating you are all forms of abuse that do not require physical contact. Please reach out for help when you feel safe doing it if someone you are in any type of relationship with is doing these things to you. If you don't feel safe, trust your gut and know it is not your fault or responsibility to keep the other person from abusing you.

Normally I am pretty in sync with Cody & Katy ("I agree with you completely"!) but I respectfully disagree with their take on this. I've been watching the Depp-Heard trial far too closely, along with far too much discussion and expert opinions from otherwise reputable Youtubers, and have concluded that, while Depp and Heard clearly had a mutually toxic relationship, and there was emotional abuse to go around, Heard was not at all believable when it came specifically to her accounts of sexual and physical assault allegations, and the body language was telling. Expert testimony on her side seemed shakier than from Depp's. The defamatory statement here was about whether there was SEXUAL VIOLENCE by Johnny, and his side had reams of evidence while Heard's was dubious and full of sustained objections. I also believe that this verdict is 100% in line with the #MeToo movement, not opposing it. #MeToo doesn't conclude that we must always believe every woman no matter what, rather it says that we should believe victims, and to give them the benefit of the doubt. Amber had that benefit, but as this was shown to the public, that got dissolved once it became clear to the court of public opinion and to the jury that she was being dishonest. Usually, the situation is a man being violent to a woman, but there are counter-examples, and I believe this to be one such. I think it's important to recognize that the patriarchy also hurts men. This is not to say that Johnny was an innocent little lamb and can do no wrong -- clearly there was mutual emotional abuse and it was a disastrous relationship overall, but in my layman's opinion, the right verdict was reached, and Amber was a bigger abuser than Johnny, and Johnny's mental state was largely a result of the anguish, and naturally emotional abuse begets more emotional abuse, especially when one isn't even able to escape a situation to cool off. But from the testimony it's pretty clear to me that, in terms of physical violence, all Johnny ever physically hit were inanimate objects, not Amber. Still will support you guys on Patreon, love the content, keep it up!

Lots of milquetoast, passive aggressive comments here. I, for one, deeply appreciate Katy and Cody’s take on it.

)n Katy's recommendation I tried Patriot, got a season and half into it. Katy, please include a content warning when you recommend it, there is a lot of suicide in that show.

You guys were really just deeply, cringingly wrong about Depp and Heard. I hope you took the time to look into it. I only got interested in the trial because I was sure the internet mob was wrong. I watched all the pertinent footage to get caught up and watched the last few days of the trial and it was pretty clear that the verdict was fair. There actually was no contradiction at all. Lots of actual evidence (people getting selfies with Johnny) of him looking beat up but not a single one of her with bruises that wasn’t edited and really conveniently placed on the cheek bones (and conveniently timed with TMZ… and magically disappeared the next day in a paparazzi shot). Whether or not he ever self-defended, it’s clear that she was the abuser and a bizarrely blatant pathological liar.
