Hi everyone.

We've received some feedback on the discussion we had about the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard defamation trial on our latest "Even More News" episode. We appreciate everyone's comments and want to acknowledge and validate the thoughtful discussions happening surrounding abuse. The support and trust we get from this community on Patreon is very important to us, so we want you to know that we are reading all your comments and want you to feel heard. We'll be addressing some of these issues in the first few minutes of next week's episode. Thanks, as always, for watching and listening.

Heh. Feel “Heard”. Puns are the lowest Deppth.

Meh. Fuck every millionaire’s defamation lawsuit ever. That’s how the rich shuts people up. This entire defamation trial was about one sentence where Amber Heard didn’t even say her abusers name. And if they abused each other, it wasn’t even defamation. YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO PROPAGANDA. The Daily Wire pumped an enormous amount of money into promoting videos on Instagram and Facebook about this trial. And quite frankly, a lot of these videos are sick as fuck. Like putting a clown filter on a woman talking about abuse. If you really can’t see what president this is setting then idk what to tell you. You should be able to write in an oped one sentence about abuse without even saying the abusers name. That’s not fucking defamation

Cody, Katy, and the rest of youse, I heard your reporting on the issue, and I disagreed a bit. That's okay. I didn't watch or listen to the trial, because I'm a raging highbrow culturally elite misanthrope who enjoys fart jokes. Also, I hate he said/she said crap. It sounds like they probably hit each other a fair bit, from what I have read. The only thing I can hope for is that abused men now feel less stigmatised for reporting abuse. I guess it's a bad thing that Amber Heard and I have the same damn initials. Who won, again? Nobody?

Clarifying your statements is understandable but I don't think you guys should have to apologize for people determining their own meaning for what you said.

Thank you! This was one of only two episodes I had a hard time finishing because of some logical/reasoning problems. A few points to consider: 1. (Not a lawyer but something I've heard several lawyers point out) No one was found 'guilty' or 'not guilty' here (these legal terms don't apply here). "Liable/not liable" are the right terms. 2. Similar to the above, this case doesn't set any precedent (at least, legally speaking). Again, that isn't how that term legally works. 3. It is possible for both Heard and Depp to be abusers. I keep hearing both sides talk about how there is ample evidence to support how one or the other is abusive, but I've yet to hear anyone seriously consider the point that they might BOTH have been abusive to one another (the same thing goes for DARVO, but in this case, it's difficult to determine which one is at fault here. Perhaps both given the circumstances?) 4. It's also possible to think that the way society has responded to this case is grotesque (if not unsurprising) and also think that Heard and/or Depp are in the right/wrong. Final note: For what it's worth, I was initially on the side of Heard but (after watching many un-commentated hours of the trial, reading comments from lawyers and psychiatrists, etc.) ended up leaning more towards Depp's side. Ultimately, I think both actors are just incredibly toxic to one another (and perhaps others.)

It would be neat if there were some way to comment on issues like these without putting oneself at risk of being wrapped up in said issues. But i know of no such way to do it.

Love you guys, hang in there

I wanna just chime in and say that I watched more of the actual trial than I should have, like several hours. But haven't watched any edited/editorialized clips, just straight up 30-90min unedited trial segments. For whatever it means/is worth, for years I'd heard (and assumed to be true) that Depp was a wife beater. I'd say from the trial my impression is that Depp is way more unstable and a basketcase than I'd ever suspected (and is definitely 'messed up') but not a wife beater. Not a good person to be in a relationship with to be sure, but my previous impression that he was just one of those physically abusive assholes doesn't seem like a tenable belief after watching the trial. My impression of him is far worse than it was before hearing he was an abuser, but definitely better than what everyone was saying he was before the trial. And while Amber didn't mention his name in the particular article in question, at no point did anyone assume she meant anything other than Depp used to beat her, and frankly the trial seemed to pretty definitively rule that claim out. And frankly, it seemed to me that at worst (for Depp) they were equally fucked up. If his thinking was that whatever comes out about how messed up he is, he would accept that to at least prove he isn't a wife beater, then imo he was successful and I can see why someone might be willing to put out all their dirty laundry to at least not have everyone think that of them.

I think I was one of the largest protest voices on that podcast comment section. The thing that really felt horrible for me was the "I'm not familiar with the facts of this case and don't wanna be" approach that was voiced just... for a lot of male victims of abuse, this is the exact mindset we lived through. It gets even worse when the person accusing us or calling us a liar is a pretty woman. We don't cut particularly tragic figures next to these people, and society has a bias to not believe men when they speak out. When she first released the highly edited video that found its way to TMZ, I immediately was like "well, Depp seems to be an abuser" and it was a bummer because he was my favorite actor. But when he started speaking out and providing evidence, I said "oh there's more here." People say Johnny destroyed property and said mean things to Amber and as a former victim of abuse and gaslighting I can say "yeah, when you're powerless to do anything your brain will react and keep you grounded in righteous anger and make you do such things." The mind will have a natural angry reaction to someone gaslighting you. The thing that really haunts me is when she is clearly just out to hurt him, a man who by all accounts just tried to put distance between them when these arguments started, and she says "tell them Johnny. Tell them that I, Johnny Depp, a man, am a victim of abuse. See if a judge and jury believe you". She lays it all out right there as he just says "yes" Every man who's been abused has heard that. We finally got a trial that lays this stuff out in particular detail. Hardcore evidence and experts... even Amber Heard admitting she used a bruise kit (makeup used to make the effects of a bruise), then trying to walk it back and people then finding a bruise kit in one of the pictures from the day.... and because she's a woman people are like "it's more important we believe women than believe men can be victims of abuse". Ya'll did that, and you can say "oh we know men can be abuse victims" like the rest do, as tho it's a hypothetical only, but when you're given a case where a clear victim of abuse shows up with tons of evidence it becomes "I'm not even that interested in the facts" ~Katy. We're not hypotheticals, we exist, and even if you'd come to the conclusion that "well they abused each other" that would have been better than "well this is a tragedy for abused women" because it was what... proven that a woman can abuse a man? Part of the reasons so many people (including women) were so overjoyed is because as men we've had our sisters, friends, mothers, and cousins see us get called liars for years... and not one moment was spared to consider whether this might be a turning point in believing men... because when it comes to abuse we simply don't matter to society if we're on the receiving end. If Johnny Depp had had the decency to be a woman, the same people mad right now would call this a triumph. Well, apologies from those of us who don't fit the narrative for having survived. We'll try to be a little less inconvenient in the future.

I wouldn't normally weigh in here but this comment section is a mess, so here I go!! Yeah, dude sent a bunch of texts about how he wanted to rape his wife's corpse, so, like, excuse me if I'm low on empathy, lmao. I don't think it's that deep. Johnny Depp drank, raged and threw things when he drank, and Amber Heard started fighting back at some point, as is typical in cases of domestic abuse. Whether she's annoying or a shitty person or whatever is immaterial. Also, people in these threads absolutely are pulling out the deep conspiracy theory shit, so I'd take it all with a grain of salt. No, she didn't admit that she made bruises with makeup, she showed makeup that she used to cover up bruises. 🙄

I was vaguely interested in looking through the comments on the podcast thread to see what y'all would be responding to, but after reading the comments here, my bandwidth is at zero. I don't have the energy to explain further, but "mutual abuse" is not a thing and there are a lot of DV/IPV professionals out there who can explain why that is much better than I can. I invite people to do some outside research on their own see how harmful and unhelpful that phrase is.

Made of Stardust

Geez, get yourself your favorite snack and drink for that. Sending you guys love, in the most platonic way.

Professor Hazard

I for sure appreciated it. I heard the news, thought "yay, a bad guy was defeated" and listened to the podcast and was informed that actually they're both pretty bad guys and I said "oh, I see". And that's fine, because people should be receptive to learning things, even if it goes against their bias.

dan from south jersey

Some people really be fragile and can't handle disagreeing with somebody and just put words in your mouths. Crazy you guys have to deal with this, some of the best political work being done on the internet, and people going to complain

Funkwit

I found your comments appropriate and accurate. Keep doing what you do. Except Warmbo. Obviously.

I think Stranger Things is starting to pump up the violence a little too much. I know I’m a big wimp and it’s not real, but I’ve always had a weak stomach for gore, and that’s not how the show started back when I loved it. Feels like a bait-and-switch, although they probably did market research and as their audience grew older the makers might have thought it was ok. I don’t know, anybody on my side here?

Miss Jess

Hang in there, folks. I thought what you said was appropriate. We can already see the ramifications (Marilyn Manson, Kyle Rittenhouse). Thank you for addressing this. Always appreciate your thoughts.

Alexander Powers

Personally, I think what you said made sense. As a man who has experienced abuse and who has multiple friends who have experienced female-on-male violence, I can say that it stung a little bit to hear Heard framed as an unambiguous victim here. It reminded me of the trend that men are the assumed abusers in cases of DV, a bad assumption that's had real consequences in my life and the life of people I love. That said, I still think it was pretty clear y'all were talking about the way the right is trying to use this as fuel to kill MeToo and the public reaction to the case, treating Depp like a poor sad little puppy who was so terribly mistreated by that awful witch Amber Heard. From everything I could tell this is a messy, complex case that nobody involved comes out looking good in, and especially for people who have experienced abuse this is going to be a very emotionally charged topic. And the gross degree of bias the media parade brought into it didn't help and was generally disgusting. It seems from the comments I saw on the original most people were angry because they viewed the episode as a statement on who was The Victim and who was The Abuser, and it's possible that it could have been better communicated that it's not the case (I certainly thought it got across but clearly a lot of people didn't). But I also wish the commenters here had treated y'all with a little more grace, especially since you were still clearly emotionally processing a pretty heavy topic even while on the show. Personally, I appreciate the vulnerability y'all showed, even if it might have come at the expense of perfectly wording a discussion on a very delicate topic. Thank you, and I hope the backlash here doesn't get anyone too down.

Depp is a wife beating POS. Anyone who is cheering for victory in court is breaking bread with the Gamergaters, the Sad Puppies, the Men's Rights Activists, and the Proud Boys–i.e. the Nazis.

Hey cuties, hopefully the comments you've both received haven't been on the aggressive/shitty side, I've read a few and I kind of had to leave it at that, also unfortunately couldn't listen to this episode because it brings up a lot of shit. Not only was the "spectacle" of it so abhorrent that I hope as time passes people will feel ashamed at how they acted during it but we're already seeing Marilyn Mansion etc suing his victims and.. oi. I've been in a relationship where I was gaslit and other lovely tactics to make me appear unstable and 'insane', where people - including close friends- not only took his side but ended our friendships to become his ally and friend. This case (while I think they're both terrible and maybe in time my stance might change as other things come to light) has dredged up a lot and seeing people's responses have solidified that people aren't ready to hear my personal story. Anyway, it's great you guys talk about it because while you did right after the verdict and thus were expressing your gut reactions, I'm sure you were both Fair & Balanced (tmcr) with what you both said. Anyway it's late and I hope this comment made sense, love you uwu

It's been difficult to build the strength to respond to this. I am also a survivor of female on male physical, emotion, sexual and verbal abuse. I also work in tv news so I was more or less forced to have this trial in my face ore than I wanted. It was extremely triggering to hear Depp's recounting being similar to in aspects of my experience, to hear Heard's reasoning being similar to my ex, and to hear people treat the whole thing as a joke. On top of that to have people I follow and usually agree with on Twitter and this show seemingly decide that Depp is at least responsible for what he endured.

Scott Edelstein

Sorry I didn't know hitting enter would post. there we go. When someone comes forward about abuse it's always wise to believe that person. When Heard came forward first, I believed her, until the facts started coming out that Depp was the victim. I feel that if Depp and Heard switched roles then the narrative would be that Heard 100% was the victim and she did not deserve it, it was not a case of two people being shitty to each other. However since the actuality is that Depp was the victim, now there is explaining that well he was shitty too and he was not 100% the victim. The focus on how the right wing took Depp's side I think is pointless. If Twitter or main stream left leaning people all said Depp is the victim, then the right would have run a huge campaign about how "the left doesn't believe women anymore." I think this actually helps Metoo because a victim of abuse was vindicated and believed when his abuser defamed and tried to continue abusing him.

Garrett Broters

Absolutely fuck Patreon if it means you have to actually care or consider other people's fourth-parties opinions about this circus of a courtroom. Nothing regarding this case actually matters. I'm sorry you felt like you had to make this 'sort-of-apology' but PLEASE understand that your main audience ALSO doesn't give a flying fuck about either of them
