It's even wilder than that, Egg is like 11th in line, so some wild stuff must go down in order for that prophecy to be true.

Matt S

Damo said he's waiting to see why Aegon wages war to take over the Seven Kingdoms - I think he's thinking of Aegon I (The Conqueror) who conquered the Seven Kingdoms over 200 years before this story. (Egg is Aegon V) In House of the Dragon they told us why Aegon the Conqueror invaded Westeros, which was his prophetic dream (A Song of Ice and Fire).

From my understanding Maekor and Baelor had a very good relationship. As you mentioned, Maekor never wanted this trial to begin with and he was visible disapointed/hurt when Baelor announced that he will fight for Sir Duncan. And when Baelor said about his wound "My brother mayhaps. He is strong", it really makes you feel that they love eachother and that Baelor doesnt judge Maekor for hitting him. I think Maekor will definitely not be happy about the death of his brother. Also the next in line to the throne is prince Valarr (son of Baelor) and not Maekor. Maekor, Baelor and Dunk are my favorite characters from the show.

So the "Daemons Rebellion" is the First Blackfyre Rebellion. Daemon Blackfyre was the bastard son of King Aegon the 4th "The Unworthy", King Aegon the 4th legitimized all his bastard sons in his death bed and that caused Daemon, the bastard son who the king gifted him the valerian sword Blackfyre and raised him like a proper son, to start the house Blackfyre (we can call them the rebellious Targaryen bastards). This rebellion was endded by the joint efforts of Baelor and Maekar in the battle of Redgrass field. After the battle Baelor and Maekar was nicknamed as The Hammer and The Anvil (Baelor the hammer and Maekar the anvil), their heroic victory inspired songs which one of them was sung by Egg at the start of episode 3, maybe a bit kid friendly version of it at least. So yes we can say they were pretty close as brothers. And i love that you guys just heard Maeakar name wrong and stick with the whole show. It's not MaekOr it is MaekAr.

I think it’s worth mentioning that one of the primary major themes of this universe is that prophecies are almost always: self-fulfilling (Cersei and the witch she visited as a child), misinterpreted (Melisandre, a whole bunch of times) or given in ways that are completely useless because they are only meaningful in hindsight (Helaena’s mutterings). Sometimes characters are directly shown things, like with Daemon at the Weirwood or Bran as the 3 Eyed Raven, but they aren’t prophecies the same way the fortune teller at the tourney was handing them out. The very fact that Bran can affect the past proves that the future isn’t fixed, or at least not the way it would need to be for prophecy to be fool-proof. Sometimes characters have symbolic dreams, usually the dragon dreamers or greenseers, but these dreams are often misinterpreted. With the case of the fortune teller at the tourney: there aren’t any characters depicted in this series who can just casually and directly read the future with one look. It’s very likely the line she lives Dunk about being richer than a Lannister is what she tells everyone. With Aegon, she seemed to be tapping into something real- but is she foretelling events set in stone, or is she handing Aegon vague pieces of information he will accidentally use to create the very future he’s trying to avoid? We don’t know.

The event is a tournament, this trial is a melee. That means they start on horseback and continue until everyone is dead or someone yields. Aerion doesn’t have much of a motivation to lie about yielding here- Dunk has him by the throat and is within his rights to kill him right there in front of everyone if he doesn’t tell them he yielded.

TT

Baelor had two sons Valarr and Matarys and three younger brothers (Aerys, Rhaegel and Maekar as the youngest). This puts Maekar very far down the line of succession to the Iron Throne (and by extension Aegon even further). I agree that there isn't really any indication that Maekar would have anything to benefit but a lot to lose from his eldest brother dying. They seem to be on very good terms and like you said he was visibly shocked and disappointed having to fight against him in the trial. He didn't want a trial by combat in the first place, even less so a trial of seven.

TT

And the person who has to die or yield is either the accuser (Aerion) or the accused (Dunk). Other champions yielding or dying won't end the trial.

It’s important to remember that the king chooses his heir. Heir dies, king chooses new heir. Thinking in terms of who’s where in line is fairly useless in this case, because there’s no explicit order to it. The king chose his oldest son in Baelor, and that’s typical tradition, but that doesn’t mean Baelor’s oldest son is next up. The king could choose his own next oldest son, he could skip over people, whatever, so there’s no definitive 6th in line to the throne at any given moment. However, as the 4th son of the 4th son of the king, Egg is unlikely to end up on the throne. On top of having older brothers, his father has older brothers, and he has older male cousins from his father’s older brothers. Let’s not even introduce the Viserys move of picking a female into that mix.

TLC

If I'm not mistaken these are the people in front of Egg at the beginning of the series. The actual number would depend if you count the females in the line of succession. Daeron II is King, Baelor Targaryen (Daeron's 1st son, Prince of Dragonstone), Valarr Targaryen (Baelor’s 1st son), Matarys Targaryen (Baelor’s 2nd son), Aerys Targaryen (Daeron's 2nd son), Rhaegel Targaryen (Daeron's 3rd son), Aelor Targaryen (Rhaegel’s 1st son), Aelora Targaryen (Rhaegel's daughter/sister), Daenora Targaryen (Rhaegel's daughter), Maekar Targaryen (Daeron's 4th son and Egg's father), Daeron Targaryen (Maekar's 1st son), Aerion Targaryen (Maekar's 2nd son), Aemon Targaryen (Maekar's 3rd son), and finally Egg.

Joe Brown

congrats to Valarr Targaryen on becoming Prince of Dragonstone

Joe Brown

the rebellion of Daemon Blackfyre is explained in the long comment i sent you in chat a while back that i know you saw but i guess you forgot to find a moment to read

Joe Brown

i dont want to be mean but im so perplexed how he managed to think that especially after HOTD referencing Aegon the Conqueror so much (including as being the namesake for Aegon II and the one behind the Song of Ice and Fire dream that is referenced so much) and also after GOT drilled in that Aegon the Conqueror conquered *with dragons*. furthermore, what does Damo think the Targaryens are currently kings of if the conquest has yet to happen? i guess his poor brain is fried from watching so many shows rapidly at a time lol, good thing theyre getting a break rn

Joe Brown

"what will make Egg conquer the seven kingdoms" they've already been conquered man, what do you think Egg's grandfather is the king of? dragonstone? lol

Joe Brown

the name of the sex worker whos been taking pity on Dunk is Red. i think the name youve been calling her might be the name of her companion in her first scene.

TT

It's a problem watching three shows on three different timelines with many characters sharing same names, thinking they are the same people. I understand how they get so confused sometimes. I still get confused too and I've read all the books and spent ages delving the wiki. There is no way to piece all this info together just from watching the shows alone. I understand the confusion in the moment, although that is one of the funnier ones for sure. xD

immapotat

arlan did it same reason dunk did. defend the innocent as every true knight must

Joe Dirté

Arlan's nephew was his squire before Dunk and had recently been killed during a battle by an adult man so when he saw Dunk being attacked by the City Watchman, he probably felt like it was his chance to 'save' his nephew. I also assume that's why he was smashed to begin with, having a wake of sorts for the fallen boy.

MerriMom

Baelor was a just and good son of a just and good king. I’m going to give some credit to their Dornish wives that they cherished and were faithful to. Martin only surprises me when he creates a decent and honorable character. Dunk’s anguish at the end was visceral and I teared up at his grief. The casting has been perfect and the POV cinematography in this melee was remarkable. Love this series.

MerriMom

Yes. A melee. Your comments are very well thought out.
