George R. R. Martin asked the showrunner to keep the question of whether Dunk was ever knighted open, like he did in the books. I think the flashback scene with Ser Arland was as clear as the show could make it. I personally love to think that Dunk was never knighted, because Dunk will presumabely one day knight Aeg, who, as we know from the books, will one day knight Ser Barristan Selmy. That would mean that the greatest knight who ever lived was never actually knighted.

Sadly you missed the funniest joke “we depart after the roast” talking about the burning of Bealor

Beefi

Yeah sure, King Daeron's daughters will definitely play a role in the succession. King Daeron II, of whom it was also said had secured the Targaryen dynasty for all eternity with his countless heirs; especially in view of the events in HoD, where a certain Viserys is responsible for the worst war in Westeros and the fall of the Targaryens, which even led to the agreement that is was established once and forever that only sons being considered, while daughters are unquestionably excluded as heirs, precisely to prevent such a war from happening again. So that no one will ever make the same mistake as Viserys again, a decision which stemmed precisely from the fact that Viserys lacked what King Daeron II had in abundance.

Beefi

I'm sorry to take away your illusion :-) But no, it doesn't mean that. Most knights aren't knighted by other knights. They’re generally knighted by kings or lords. And Ser Barristan Selmy was knighted by King Aegon.

Constantin Freudenthaler

Yeah, that's a good point. We don't know who knights Aeg anyway but ultimately, you're right, it doesn't matter.

Beefi

Personally, I actually find the whole story about the Blackfyre Rebellion much more entertaining than the one about the Dance of the Dragons.

So house Beesbury enjoys a loyal fanbase, not only are they usually on the good side but get absolutely wrecked like in the trial by seven and in House of the dragon small council, but they also have a very funny theme, colours and house words "beware our sting" as in "bee-ware". A bee might die but the hive survives!

Sheri

Loved this so much! I just love anything in GRRM's world, but these novellas (and this adaptation) are so very special. Glad you enjoyed it!

3:26 What kind of genius comes up with this nonsense? There's pretty much everything wrong that could possibly be wrong. But what’s even more fascinating is that the claim is made with reference to `House of the Dragon`, which contradicts every single one of those statements instead of supporting them. The king CANNOT change the line of succession as he pleases. That is precisely the point of hereditary succession laws. The lawful heir to the throne is supposed to be determined precisely by a superior, indisputable right. If the king appoints someone other than the heir designated by the line of succession, there is usually a valid reason for skipping someone, so that the appointment is widely supported. And `House of the Dragon`has shown what happens when the king names his heir regardless of everything in conflict with a wide general interpretation of such a right. It happens exactly what this inheritance succession is supposed to prevent. The consequence was that it was established once and for all that only sons and the male line of succession are considered for the throne., because the root cause of the “Dance of Dragons” was an unclear rule that allowed anyone to choose a side at will and justify their choice by claiming to support the rightful heir and not “Because the king says so,” versus “I don't care, I do what I want.” So no, at the latest by this point, there aren`t even theoretically potential female heirs to the throne to consider.

Sam

No idea where that commenter was coming up with that stuff but they're 100% incorrect about the succession. The king doesn't usually have to name an heir unless they don't have a living son, so the line of succession is very much set in stone as Valarr and Matarys (Baelor's sons), then King Daeron's next 2 sons Aerys and Rhaegel, Rhaegel's son Aelor (Aerys had no children and Rhaegel's other kids were daughters who definitively are not included in the line of succession for the throne), then finally Maekar and his 4 sons. So unambiguously, Maekar went from 7th in line to 6th, and Egg went from 11th to 10th. The only hiccups before came when the king did not have a living son eligible for the throne. Maegor the Cruel named his great-niece/step-daughter Aerea as his heir because he had no children, King Jahaerys has the Great Council figure it out when his eligible sons died, and Viserys named Rhaenyra when he believed she would be his only child. That's /not/ the norm and I don't know why someone so confidently told you that's how it works.

Sam

Aside from the whole succession thing, I did want to also say that this is hands-down the most faithful adaptation of anything I've ever seen. I have some tiny gripes, but so much of it is 1-to-1 exactly how it is in the novella and anything that was added felt perfectly in line with the tone and the spirit of the novella

Ispahan

Rowan and Red are the same person 😁 She saw her chance and seized it.

Ispahan

I suspect Ser Arlan was not knighted himself. This might be why he felt that he could not knight Dunk.

Ispahan

Interestingly, Maekar is not wearing his Targaryen seal ring at the end. But we see him wearing it before. So, he might have given it to his son, along with his permission to go. He’s putting on a show for other people rather than publicly admitting that he has entrusted a hedge knight with his son’s squire education.

KomoUpNorth

Now we gotta wait for season 2 😞

Merri-gal

Dexter (Egg) played the youngest Corelanys Snow in the Hunger Games prequel. Arlen didn’t want Dunk to be an unrecovered penny. This episode is poignant, and a bit humerous (Dunk covering for Red, who yes was the prostitute who sat with her Patron in the stands for the melee). Was a pleasure to watch this with you two. Dorne will be a great setting whenever they get there. Both Balor and his King Father married Dornish women whom they adored and were faithful to. Who would have thought GRM could write a decent marriage.

Merri-gal

Indeed. And Raymun is a decent and happy fellow😁

Merri-gal

Or he didn’t want Dunk to become an unrecovered penny. He had lost his nephew (maybe others) in battle.

Merri-gal

That’s interesting!

Merri-gal

Coming soon. January or first week in February. Already filming in Ireland.

KomoUpNorth

Soon? Thats so far away 😢 lol

Cactus Josh

In the prior episode you can actually see when Maekar strikes Baelor with his mace. It's right at the end of the Trial. (Tragically after Aerion has already yielded to Dunk, but before he says it loud enough for everyone to hear.) Maekar is trying to get to Aerion to help him, and Baelor is trying to slow him down.

Jackson Potluck

And the Green Apple Fossaways are born 😊

Jackson Potluck

It is automatically a boy. That's why they had a whole entire civil war over one woman possibly becoming queen. Only two women have ever sat the iron throne one is Rhaenyra (House of the Dragon) and you know how that went. The other is Cersei. That's it. And no the king does not choose his heir. The eldest son is the heir.

Steven Heinig

I swear "Bee Magic" sounds like something Charlie from Sunny would say.

Henry Enevåg

Yeah i would love to see a show about it in the future!

Henry Enevåg

This show is a masterpiece in my opinion, loved every actor and everything about this show. I usually have big problem with child actors but Dexter was incredible!

Merri-gal

Indeed! So funny.

Jesus Perez

Super late but this is almost certainly what happened.

Kristjan Kangro

It's more likely that Egg stole it somehow. I don't see Maekar putting on a show like this.

Ispahan

Maybe… but he was wearing it. Can’t wait to find out in season 2!
