I have dual citizenship with U.S. and Finland. Although I did serve in the U.S. Army and live in Texas. When I was 2 years old my family and I spent a summer at our lil lake cabin in Finland when the disaster happened. My mom said it was insane! Can't wait for the 4th episode! Thanks fellas!!!

This show is so bleak so but sooo gripping. It came out only a few years ago

Heartbreaking but absolutely incredible show. The acting, production, everything is top notch. I'm old enough to remember when it happened. Yes the show is faithful to true events. There are a few composite characters and a few dramatized relationships, but mostly this all happened.

My mom's aunt (my great aunt) was from the Ukraine and lived in Kiev when this occurred. I believe Kiev is like 2 hours away or something like that.

Radiation is invisible and it can't be stopped. They don't need to breathe it in. It is going through their skin.

Very excited for you both to watch the series! Great read on it so far.

Dyatlov got a light sentencing is what he was saying in the beginning. But he wasn’t the root cause as you see later on.

Hopefully true detective season 1 next. I think this and TD season one are the two best things HBO has ever done

I know this show took a LOT creative liberties with the historical accuracy, but holy hell did they make Anatoly Dyatlov one of the frustrating people in any show I've ever seen. The actor sadly died in 2021 from a brain tumor 2 years after this aired. Amazing show overall, but you might be interested to look up some of the inaccuracies after you guys finish. Every show based on historical events is going to have to take some liberties, but a few of the things in this series are just full blown lies to make for a more intriguing story.

It's understandable for shows of this magnitude to take liberties because there are so many elements to juggle as a storyteller, and plus there is artistic license (otherwise they would just do a documentary). However, I do wish they had made some of the liberties taken clear for the general public because I heard that the actual woman played by Jessie Buckley (firefighter's wife with blonde curly hair) got so much backlash based on things that happened in the show, which was different from the truth. Totally unfair, poor woman. But incredible show.

Alpha radiation can't penetrate the dead skin on your body, or even a sheet of paper. It's pretty safe to hold a lump of uranium in your hand. But inside your body, it can cause catastrophic damage. Breathing in small particles will destroy your lungs. It's far, far more deadly breathed-in than touched. There's also beta and gamma radiation, which have much more penetrating power.

Iodine pills are to protect the thyroid gland. One of the most dangerous components of nuclear fallout is the radioactive isotope iodine-131. If you take potassium iodide pills, you flood the thyroid with stable, safe (and necessary for life) iodine-127. The body doesn't need any extra, so it passes the excess iodine-131 out in urine and doesn't absorb much of the radiation. It's not the only radioactive isotope, but it's one that's easy to partially protect against. Prevents thyroid cancers.

One thing people have to understand with this incident and the politics and actions portrayed is that geo politics aside the USSR wasn't a free speech or even personal/human rights aligned state, it was protect the government's narrative and your superiors at all costs regardless of morality other wise you pay with your life or at best freedom. I respect it in some ways such as the strength it built with their culture but it also was more corrupt and authoritarian than at best 95% of nations that exist today and even today the Wagner CEO got off'ed along with many many others that went against the government. They've killed probably dozens of people who went against the Russian government in the last couple decades that is publicly known alone and I know of several cases that took place outside of Russia aka you go against the states narrative and they will still hunt you down wherever you went just for speaking out and the USSR was vastly worse than that
