Weird Magic

It wasn't released on the same date, this one was split. If an upcoming episode is "combined" - we'll let you know :) Originally airing on September 29, 2004, "Pilot: Part 2" is Episode 2 of Season 1 of LOST. It is the 2nd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.1, placing it as the #2 ranked episode of this season and #1 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Ambrosia

"He looks like someone from Busted" made me cackle 😂

Kristin Carter

You guys also saw Kate in the Hobbit so maybe that's why you recognize her

Kristin Carter

When y'all asked why Hurley had a strange reaction to Sayid saying he was in the Republican Guard, its because he just realized he was fighting on the opposite side of the war.

Ambrosia

I felt I could read Damo's mind when he was writing down that there was a polar bear. I feel he was shaking his head thinking "yep, definitely mystery... what did these guys get us into?" 😂

TLC

Boone?🤣 The Republican Guard was the Iraq military. The seafood was sea urchic. The pilot said the radio went out and they turned back toward Figi.....thats why they were so far off course. You missed the name of the guy you thought would die. MY biggest question at the time was WTF is a polar bear doing on a tropical island!!!

Weird Magic

This episode aired during the 2nd Gulf War, only 3 years after 9/11. The terrorist sentiment was strong at the time, so the Sayid being Iraqi part hit the viewer harder back then than it does now. Also explains the redneck's reaction better (Kate did say his name, but since you haven't caught it yet, I'll leave it off here). Sidenote - the two actors I have been most surprised to hear in their real accents were Matthew Rhys and Naveen Andrews (Sayid). Andrews was born and raised in London. Return of the King - released 12/18/2003, less than a year before Lost began - so Dominic Monaghan should look pretty similar to how he did in that movie. The food was most likely sea urchin IMO We got our first "I did not expect that". :) Well done gents!

DN Reacts

Yeah we put that together, his reaction made perfect sense once we realised

DN Reacts

Yeah to say we were shocked to see a polar bear is an understatement 😂

Kristin Carter

When you have a chance, give a closer look to that comic book Walt was reading, if you feel like it.

Erin’s Cafe

The longest direct flight you could get from Australia to the continental United States would be to Dallas/Fort Worth, which is roughly 17 hours. If you’re headed to the East Coast, you’d probably have a stop in LA or San Francisco first. Maybe Houston.

Erin’s Cafe

Also, the raw fish recommendation for pregnancy is because it can contain bacteria or parasites, but that generally comes from storing at unsafe temperatures and poor handling procedures. Straight from the sea should be a fairly small risk.

Erin’s Cafe

Tabula rasa is latin for blank slate, btw. I’m so excited that you guys are watching this show- I was in college when it came out, and my roommates and I had a white board with theories and connections and clues. We looked like that meme of Charlie from Its Always Sunny.

Kab

Oh my god. love how the camera circle around them, all the close-up shots in the end. Now that you've *really* watched the first episode of Lost, haha, I'm soo excited for what's to come. That was awesome!

Loved your reaction to finding out Kate was the one being transported by the Marshal! :D She said in the first episode that the guy with the shrapnel in his stomach was sitting next to her- we just didn't see his face then! She's also grasping her wrist when Jack calls to her when he needs help sewing his wound, probably trying to get the handcuffs off away from everyone!

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

Asar alubat! 🤣 Nick I know I said this was the early 00s Severance but you gotta give your brain a blank slate! 😉

Hefty517

Things to look out for on rewatches, part 1: In the first episode, when we first meet Kate as she comes out of the bushes & sews up Jack’s wound, she’s rubbing her wrists, like they have been up until recently handcuffed.

Hefty517

Also: of all the times I’ve watched this show, and all the reactors I’ve watched, I’ve never seen someone focus as much on the bald backgammon man’s scar. It’s bits like this that make the subscription worth it.

TLC

I loved the scene of the bald man and Walt...there was a line that stayed with me all seasons.

The pilot said they were a thousand miles off course because they hit the severe turbulence and tried to turn back and land in Fiji. This is after the radio went out. So, the airline would have no idea where they were after their last point of contact

JennaB

I pet sit an orange Tabby named Vincent 😄

zammmerjammer

Polar bears are among the very few predators that will actively hunt human beings. Very bad news to be stranded on an island with them.

zammmerjammer

Just came here to point out something about Shannon's translation... In French, "Il les a tué tous" can mean either "IT killed them all" or "HE killed them all."

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

I'm sure Damo will pick it up in the editing but- the pilot said the radio went out when they were already 6 hours in and that's when he turned back to land in Fiji, but we don't know how long it was between turning and the crash. They'd be 1000 miles off course because no one knew they'd turned around

zammmerjammer

Also, just based on what we learned about Kate in this episode, that she's not as innocent as she appears, isn't that little interaction she had with the redneck guy interesting? Seems like maybe he clocked something about her true nature that no one else sees. And I don't think Kate likes the idea that he "knows her type," as he said.

Merri-gal

Yes! She falls in love with Kiley😢

Merri-gal

Swordfish are riddled with parasites, but sea urchin are not.

Merri-gal

I did the annual subscription for this show and your reactions. The first season of this I had a Uni class that ended at the mid point of each episode, so I only got to see the end. Massively confused but completely intrigued, I haunted the main message board for the show and peppered my friends with 100’s of questions. Made sure my school schedule didn’t interfere after that.

Shanti (cuchupacu)

is he named after vincent van gogh? probably has the same hair color.

JennaB

Good question. I'm not sure. He started as a stray and is now a rotund spoiled boy. 😄

Shanti (cuchupacu)

he’ll probably also realize they’d shown the mountains before. i don’t normally mind when they miss something while taking notes, but there were several seconds of jack, kate and charlie walking through a lowland area edged by steep mountains. i figured they’d see it another time!

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

She was rubbing her wrists and then Walt finds the handcuffs. She does unlock the cuffs during the crash so I think it's just a subtle little nod for us to pick up on the rewatch

Let's gooooo but like in a minute.

2026-09-06 15:00 This show popularized the term mystery box but it’s more of an onion. Every episode will pull back more and reveal more. I’m not sure how long it will take. Been a while. But they’ll reveal the destination airport. And the polar bear. And I’d say 99% of your questions.

Almost every character in this show has quite a bit of a story and learning it was far more interesting than the island's secrets IMO.

She's in quite a lot of things but The Hobbit is for sure one they've seen in the past year or so.
