We've arrived at White Rabbit - keep an eye out for more references to Alice in Wonderland as the series continures (and I will be there to point them out, lol!) Editing to add more info: You guys mentioned 'The Matrix' - the white rabbit symbolism in that movie was a reference to Alice in Wonderland as well; the phrase "going down the rabbit hole" is also a reference to Alice in Wonderland, specifically to the scene when Alice fell down the hole following the white rabbit. In the modern lexicon, we use it to mean 'going on a quest to find information' - Alice wasn't really *trying* to do that per se, but she ended up going on a journey anyway.

Charlie's tattoo - "Living is easy with eyes closed," are lyrics from The Beatles (Strawberry Fields Forever)

Kristin Carter

There were 48 survivors, then the marshall died, so we were at 47, then Joanna in this episode, so we're at 46 - the pilot wasn't included in the count.

Ok, here's my unsolicited take on Jack's father as a fellow healthcare worker (I LOVED your discussion about him by the way): The talk Jack's father gave him when he was younger wasn't the motivating, uplifting, "you can do anything you put your mind to" type of speech we are used to hearing from parents to children, so it can be kind of jarring and make you have this instant reaction of thinking, "Wow, what a jackass." However, you have to consider the source - Jack's father is from the 'old school' way of thinking (as you mentioned in the discussion) where you compartmentalize your feelings, lock it all away, and move on with your life. In theory, this would be a good way to be, because if you got upset over every single patient who took a turn for the worse or passed away, how could you carry on the rest of your shift caring for the rest of your patients? But as time has gone on, we found out that its actually not healthy for your psyche to try to live this way and it has contributed to healthcare worker burnout, depression, anxiety, self harm, and substance abuse. Now we take a different approach which includes "debriefing time" after traumatic events that happen at work, like when a patient you are close with dies, stress relieving activities in the workplace (my hospital has a "Serenity Garden" and a "Serenity Cove" which is a room with individual cubbies where you can go sit in a massage chair for 30 minutes) and therapy sessions covered by our employee health insurance. A lot of the older employees aren't as on board with these newer initiatives though, seeing it as soft and believing that you should just tough it out. (A lot of that, "Well back in my day," crap.) When Jack's father looks at him, he sees a sensitive boy who can't stand to see anyone left behind - I mean, he even got himself beat up just so his best friend wouldn't get beat up alone! So when he tells him "You just don't have what it takes," what he really means is, "You don't have what it takes to tough it out when something really terrible happens that you *can't* fix." So he's telling him not to try to be a hero, not to go into medicine, not to become a doctor, because there will be plenty of instances where he *can't* save someone, and that will destroy Jack. Maybe he is trying to protect him from ending up the same way as himself - I mean in this episode, we hear Jack admit that he and his father didn't speak for 2 months prior to his death, that his father had no friends, and that he drank himself to death, alone, on the opposite side of the world from his family. How sad is that?

Nick mentioned "just use contactless" as a joke when Jack realised his dad left his wallet in the hotel- I feel this is a great moment to point out just how incredible the show looks! I know Nick was joking but it's so easy to forget this was made in 2004 when contactless wasn't a thing 🤣

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

I think potentially you should do a consistent Love/Like/Hate list from start to current episode, I'll be really surprised if it doesn't change :P

TLC

At this point we dont know if Jack's father was even on the plane. We saw him begging the gate agent and then it cut to another scene. Maybe the coffin was empty...if he was in the coffin in the cargo area of the plane where did the body end up? And was Jack just hallucinating? Locke always choses his words carefully. This conversation between Jack and Locke is interesting for several reasons. I find it interesting that Locke acknowledges Jack may be hallucinating but then goes down the what if trail... I have looked into the eye of the island and it was beautiful.

DN Reacts

Im so glad you knew I was joking 😂 but yeah, the show really holds up for being 22 years old!

DN Reacts

Thank you for clearing that up 😊

DN Reacts

That makes a lot of sense, I didn’t put the Alice in Wonderland link together!

TLC

Sawyer was reading Watership Down ...just as I posted this Nick gets it!

TLC

So lets talk about Boone... he said during the argument that Jack left... my feeling is Boone wants to be a leader, a hero...but he keeps failing and it's always Jack that comes out the hero. When Jack storms off he decides he's going to take on the responsibility. I think he took the water not for himself but to protect it because he didn't trust the others to ration it.

DN Reacts

Thank you for sharing! Really interesting comment 😊 I definitely think paying more attention to our mental health, especially in high pressure jobs is so important! The “back in my day” crowd can keep repressing and acting like they are ok, but it’s not healthy.

DN Reacts

Stop, I love that show 😂 but I know what you mean without even looking

Kristin Carter

Exactly - he said the water was just sitting there, unprotected, "it would have never lasted!" And all of this after he blows up at Jack saying, "Who appointed you our leader?" It sounds like he's looking for some more responsibility/leadership within the group and didn't realize until afterwards how sketchy it looked that he had moved the water without telling anyone else.

Kristin Carter

In addition to the like/hate/love list, it would be interesting to hear you guys guess which character's flashbacks we'll be getting that episode, based on the title of the episode or just your general feeling of who is coming up next. So far we've had Kate (ep 3), Locke (ep 4), and now Jack (ep 5).

Sam

What I got from Jack finding the coffin was that Jacks’ Dad was leading him to the fresh water, which everyone was desperate for and lead to Jack calming the situation on the beach. I think his dad was helping him - the first time Jack sees him he leads him to Locke in the bushes bringing in the boar. I think him not being in the coffin signifies that Jack hasn’t yet got the closure he really needed, which he clearly is desperate for from the airport bit

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you guys might have forgotten to come back to who's back story you're most looking forward to in the outro :P

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

On your tracker spreadsheet (which is incredible we love to see it!) I think that everyone who hiked to pickup the transceiver signal (Kate, Charlie, Sayid, Shannon, Boone and Sawyer) + Jack know about being 1000 miles off course but not sure if they told the rest of the survivors. Sayid didn't want to tell them about picking up the French woman's transmission because they would lose hope, I think knowing that no one knew they were 1000 miles off course would also make people lose hope- but don't think it's explicitly stated. ….But it might not be as relevant after Jack’s Live Together, Die Alone speech at the end of this episode! XD

DN Reacts

Just needed a bit more thinking time! 😂

DN Reacts

I think I said similar towards the end of the outro 😊 I like that theory!

DN Reacts

Haha! Always have a coffee ready when he gets here 😊

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

Is the other person you think wasn't supposed to be on the plane Locke? The Walkabout Organiser said he could get him a flight back to Sydney on their dime, and Locke clearly didn't get to go on his walkabout so it's perhaps likely he wasn't taking his scheduled flight back to LA

zammmerjammer

Your assignment: Read Watership Down before next episode. 🐇☀️

Wait what, we now have Excel tables to keep track of the mysteries and questions? haha, i love it. don't overdo yourself

Jack is the man. My only advice to you two is to pull at all the threads you notice. I’m always here for the Intros/Outros which began for me when the algorithm plunked me down in front of your LOTR first movie. I’m so freaking psyched that you’re reacting to LOST and going all in with your detective ways!

Merri-gal

And sometimes he’s so laser focused it gets cold.

Merri-gal

I foresee an entire wall behind them with 1,000 clues (think those police procedural shows back in the day) on a « murder board » gone nuts.

Kristin Carter

I know, right - people are just going to keep making suggestion after suggestion, lmao! "So here's our like/hate/love list, our prediction for the next couple to get together, our predication for the people to get into a fight, our prediction for the next character to die, our list of flashbacks we haven't gotten yet, our prediction for the next character's flashbacks, our list of questions that haven't been answered, our list of secrets that people are keeping from other people, our list of which other characters currently know those secrets, and here's our prediction for which character will find out next ..."

Matt108

So four episodes in and you’ve already got a spreadsheet and an airplane map haha. And now looking up books that appear on screen. Down the Lost rabbit hole you go!

I watched Lost as it aired (and then twice again since then) and, as flawed as it is, it really was the start of this genre of television show. This suspenseful, mysterious, twisty-turn-y type show. It was so new and original at the time. Now we have lots of shows like this (Severance, Wayward Pines, From, Paradise, Silo, etc....the list goes on and on). I happen to love this type of show so I'll just forever be grateful to Lost. Also, this show has one of the hottest lineups of male characters in an ensemble show ever. Something for everyone. Every archetype. Hot, handsome, cute, pretty. A whole spectrum of "masculinity." Lots of accents. Heroes, bad boys, tsunderes, hopeless romantics. Long hair, short hair, blonde, brunette....A whole buffet. Personally, I always favored Jin-soo (Daniel Dae Kim's character) and Sayid. And Charlie is a cutie, too, but I'm biased because I am such a die-hard LOTR fan. haha. Also, after watching FROM (half a dozen times), I'm finding Michael especially attractive, too. I love his character "Boyd" in FROM. My sister was Team Sawyer but no amount of hotness can make a mean dude attractive to me. And Sawyer is just a jerk.

Jordan Wiegand

Another great reaction! Keep the long intro and outros coming haha we love them. I watch/listen to the intros sometimes when they drop before I get a chance to watch the full reaction. Love the new secret tracker too. Also now with this episode I think you have learned all of the main cast of character names! I didn’t realize that it took so long to hear them say all of these names. The Jack - Locke dynamic is a highlight of this episode and really the first time we’ve seen these two interact for an extended time so far. One of my favorite dynamics in the show.

One of the best things I love about this show is how well they use the leitmotifs and other musical themes over time for numerous scenes throughout the series. When I recognize one of them playing in a scene, either I remember a scene in a coming season and get emotional or I remember an old scene where it was used and get emotional. That definitely happened with the theme at the end of this episode. Some of you Losties know EXACTLY when it plays again at some touching moments (no spoilers). It almost made me tear up. Thank you, Michael Giacchino

Tobias Keezy

The coroner said how Jack's father died. He went on a huge bender with the drugs and alcohol and had a heart attack. And you guys have forgotten that not only Joanna died now, but Kate's marshal had to be put down by Jack after the failed mercy killing from Sawyer. (I don't think he counted the pilot in the survivor count that he was telling the pilot, and I don't think he counted the guy who got sucked into the engine and blown up)

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

I loved how Locke asked Jack what he would tell a patient if they were experiencing this. Then he gently steers him to consider he’s not hallucinating. It seemed some comfort for Jack

TLC

Down the rabbit hole 🤣 I see what you did there!!!!

Kristin Carter

Hey now, Sayid is mine 😂😂😂😂

Ambrosia

in a world full of long comments that go unread, I want to say that I did read yours, and you actually made me reframe Jack's dad in my head a little, and I've known of his character for 20 years now 😂. But you're right, unfortunately compartmentalizing, while not helpful long term (bigtime know THAT one personally), is necessary to make sure you are a good surgeon and don't let emotions or feelings get in the way. At least until you can find a much much healthier way to deal with that of course hah. Thank you for this comment! ❤️

Ambrosia

Now that we see what Jack was doing on this plane, it is pretty understandable that he wasn't as eager for a memorial as most. There he is, wearing the suit that he was going to wear to his father's funeral. He was supposed to be at his dad's funeral, not this.

Ambrosia

When asked about the water, Boone said "the water was just sitting there, and Jack just left, someone had to do something" (paraphrasing a few words, but that was the message) and then that's when he mentioned that he couldn't get it to Claire because of the chaos. But him saying that shows he was making that move to kind of try and be the leader and take charge since Jack took off. Not necessarily selfish intentions at the start, but ultimately it was a selfish move because he kept it going.

immapotat

I LOVE you already made a excel sheet for this show LOL, will be much needed as well as more notebooks i bet

Matt108

Love the scene with Kate, Sayid and Locke all dressed in white in this episode, White Rabbit. Are they all blank slates? Tabula Rasa? Meanwhile Sawyer is wearing black, Charlie in gray.

Weird Magic

Originally airing on October 20, 2004, "White Rabbit" is Episode 5 of Season 1 of LOST. It is the 5th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.3, placing it as the #15 ranked episode of this season and #4 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Weird Magic

It took me a long time to realize what Jack's Dad was really saying here too - you are 100% correct. It's not that Jack doesn't have what it takes...it is quote "when you fail....you don't have what it takes".

TiMthisIS

The body might have been shipped in something separate than the formal coffin. And it's possible with the paperwork issue and his begging that they simply just shipped the coffin and held the body until the paperwork or shipping arrangements was correct. Not sure if there was enough time to have done an embalming there in Australia so shipping a body in a coffin in an unrefrigerated airplane hold is part of the paperwork problem I'm sure.

Martin Dochstader

Sawyers book was watership down. Sawyer reads anything he can get his hands on

Mark Riggs

I don't know if someone has already said, but Boone said (while they were angry-mobbing him) he hid the water because it had just been left out where anyone could take it (he noticed after Jack walked off), and by the time he tried to rectify it in some way, things had gotten out of control. Not excusing him or anything, but that's basically what he said was his reasoning.

Mark Riggs

Oh, AND... I always forget from last episode to this one that we see Locke looking directly at the monster and presume him dead until he shows up with the boar. I tell myself later in the series it's because so much has happened, but I just now realized I've forgetten it by the time he says he's stared into the heart of the island (or eyes... or pancreas... whatever it was) in this episode. I'm proud to report for the first time on this viewing I was like, "Oh yeah... he kinda did. Or the mouth of its pet monster or whatever, anyway."

Kay

I don’t want to comment on specific seat assignments but rest assured we were definitely making seating charts when this was airing live lol
