Chapter 15

Ms Virtue used the key to remove the chain from her collar, and that padlock also held her collar closed. Killed two birds with one key. Then she freed Jenny, who took the key to released the other women. While that happened, the heroine went around the perimeter of the basement looking for an egress outside. None was found.

She headed for the stairs.

“You girls stay down here until I call for you,” she said. “Hopefully, this won’t take long.”

The naked, barefooted heroine eased up the wooden stairs, each step groaning just a little. She cringed at every sound, but continued up. She was everyone’s only hope. And her only chance was to get her power belt back and around her waist. So there was no going back.

Do or die time, she thought. Then she rapped her knuckles against her head. Knock on wood. Should never have mentioned die. Nothing but positive thoughts.

The stairs rose up to the center of the house above. It was a hundred year old cottage: kitchen in back, living room up front, and all the bedrooms lined along one side. She heard the slavers up front, speaking in Russian. Very animated. Ivanka’s voice sounded strident, at least to her. Everyone else spoke in a low, slow Russian drawl.

The blonde heroine peeked to her right, toward the sound of voices. She saw the front door, but not any of the people. Looking left, she saw the open door into the kitchen at the end of that narrow corridor. Two open doors lined the left wall, as well as one on the right. The right door went into the dining room, the other two doors were a bathroom and bedroom. The kitchen was pretty large for the size of the house.

Her eyes were drawn to the back door, with luggage piled to one side.

The sound of stilettos sent her hurrying into the kitchen, and out of direct line of sight down the corridor. Ivanka’s voice came to her, speaking rather casually in Russian. Was she coming to the kitchen to get a snack or drink? Ms Virtue scanned the luggage, spotting two blue suitcases.

She rushed over to the closest, pulling it out and snapping open the latches. Opening it found it full of fine feminine footwear. Nothing but designer shoes. The heroine’s heart thundered. Time running out. And Ivanka stepped into the kitchen.

“Escape!” the blonde Russian screamed. “Ms Virtue is — ”

That’s all she got out. Ms Virtue seized a suitcase handle, rushed the Russian, and swung with all her might. She struck Ivanka in the face, bouncing the slaver off the wall, whereupon she fell flat on her face and didn’t move.

Looking down the corridor, she spotted Vlad leading the other men in a dead run. So she flung the suitcase down the corridor, bouncing it like a stone across a pond, and took out the leader’s legs. They all crashed into a cursing pile of humanity.

Ms Virtue rushed back to the other blue suitcase, buried deep in the pile. She ripped it out sending other luggage sliding across the old, faded linoleum floor. The suitcase popped open just as Vlad came stumbling in, stopping to look at his unconscious daughter. The heroine squeaked, rifling through her costume items to find the rolled up golden belt on bottom. Seizing one end, she spun toward Vlad and swung the belt, making it roll out just before slapping it across his eyes. The Russian slaver missed her to smash into the kitchen sink.

As the other Russians charged in, growling with their rage, she snapped the belt around her waist and felt the super powers return. Ms Virtue then flew straight at them, spinning into savage kicks to the face. Lev went down first, followed by Leonid. Alexei turned and raced back up the corridor. She froze in midair, and let him go.

That’s when Vlad tackled her out of the air, slamming her back against the wall. They both fell atop Ivanka, who grunted loudly. That distracted Vlad just enough for the heroine to push away, and slam a kick to his chin. Then she kicked him over and over in the face until he was out cold.

Ms Virtue quickly went from man to man, kicking them into la la land. She even, very satisfyingly, had to kick Ivanka unconscious again.

She found a phone in Lev’s jacket, called 911, and called the other women up. While they waited for the police, she had the freed women tie up their kidnappers. She took the opportunity to put her costume back on. Then she guarded the slavers while the former captives went through Ivanka’s suitcases to find articles of clothing to wear. Everyone was dressed before the first police arrived.

“Ms Virtue, is this everyone?” a sergeant asked when he arrived.

“Yes,” she said. Then remembered that the other women knew better. So she pretended to look around. “Oh, there’s one missing.”

“His name is Alexei Popov,” Miranda said. “And I heard them talking about how he was born and raised in Nexxus City, so he shouldn’t be hard to find.”
