A friend asked me to make an hour-long playlist for him, and I obliged by filling it with the kind of music I love best, music which doesn't really get into my albums of the year lists because it's almost all singles. We're talking very programmed, extremely melodic late-80s/early 90s dance songs. I share it here for the few people who may enjoy it.

I read an interesting interview with Questlove from The Roots where he said, and I paraphrase, that what has vanished from most contemporary popular Black music is the sound of the church. I am not religious but as a teenager, and even now, I find that frisson between the spiritual and secular in music the most exciting sound imaginable - in any genre.

Jane Child. "Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time"

I think that song is the absolute peak of a sort of radio-friendly sonic sandpaper. Every sound in it is just a hair short of too abrasive to tolerate. Her look with the trenchcoat, foot high hair and nose chain was the same. A masterclass in understanding pop culture in 1990. What a song.

What sold me at the time was the Sigue Sigue Sputnik t-shirt. Bold, bold choice, especially for *1990*, my god!

I still have my Ten City and Scritti Politti tapes! Recorded a few of the others onto my mixtapes too 📼

That was on one of my mixtapes! I had completely forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me 😄

Was Jane Child one of Stock Aitken Waterman’s “edgy” offerings?

scarygoround

No, she was a sort of one-woman operation if memory serves, production and everything. Like Mariah Carey!
