I enjoy doing the Q&A essays, and we've not had a batch of questions for a while. So if you have anything you want to ask me - creative questions, advice, story questions, or anything else, put them in the replies and I will do my best to give you a considered answer.

And remember:

There's a T-shirt design right there

Morgan Long

How do you decide which characters to keep writing about and which to stop? You cycled through Tessa and Rachael in Scary Go Round back to the Bobbin's cast and only occansionally touch on the Bad Machinery boys.

Ross Webster

Do you have a technique for coming up with titles for your stories and storylines? I've always admired how simple yet how well crafted and fitting they all are.

Luke Drotos

Gonna do a batch of them -Looking back, are there any specific characters that you think could’ve been handled better -What’s your favorite storyline from each series (Bobbins Classic, Bobbins.Horse and New Bobbins count as seperate in this scenario) -Would you ever want to do another story that has no connection to Bobbins whatsoever like By Night (even if that is still in the same continuity) -A big part of your artstyle’s appeal for me is the very specific and dynamic way characters are posed, at least I believe they’re specific . Are there any precise inspirations, or is it more something that naturally formed as your style evolved? -Do you ever see your characters appearing in non-comic media, whether it be adaptations or even original stories? I’ve heard there was a couple attempts at TV adaptations that didn’t go too far, and I know of the Giant Days novel. -Individual pages in longer stories and even print comics always tend to have their own mini-stories like a comic strip. How do you balance that with having the pages flow together? -How is Ralph doing these days?

Dimitri Coppens

Ever since reading 'Giant Days' I have been worries about the laser sharp acces to my soul. Have you been watching me? Spying on me? Studying my every step and behaviour? I am particullarly talking about: "At school, being creative and sensitieve was met with traditional violence and bullying" and: "They know where you live!" (at the hardware store). Not really a question, but your confession would set me free.

Pierpaolo Di Camillo

i have 3 questions: 1) Will Claire's insane passion for fire become an important part of a story someday, maybe with concerned friends? 2) Will Lottie and Esther even team up for defeat the big danger of that Manchester-Sheffield Hyperloop Richard (and probably Coralie too) wanted to built in G.D.44? Any chanches for the Solvers - Steeple crossover to become a reality?

John Shepherd

To what extent did the emergence of “The DFC” influence the creation of Bad Machinery? (At the time I assumed that the switch to a series featuring a school-age cast couldn’t be entirely co-incidental. But -- reading between the lines -- it also felt like it _might_ be best to wait for at least a decade and a half before putting this particular question to you… )

Steve McSheffrey

Any chance of seeing where life has taken Lottie's male former costars?

Aaron Eppy

Any chance of seeing the final batch of Steeple issues in a printed edition?

Dirk Johnson

Most of your main characters have been women. Is there a reason? Are there any points you keep in mind to be sensitive about? How do you find the line between writing about sexual topics without sexualizing them? Thoughts on this in general? These are all things I think very highly about of you as a comics creator and writer and I would love your insights into this.

William Cole

I don't have a question, but I wanted to wish you a happy birthday while it is still, technically, your birthday (in the land of the freedom eagle, at least).

Michael Ben Silva III

How do you go about aging (and now with Shelley de-aging) your characters? Aging was central to Bad Machinery, so do you think it started there? How would you say that process has changed for you over the years?

Tim

Will Solver only last as long as you don't run out of alterative 'G' names? Will Dean Thompson find redemption? Is he still seeing the bus lady? Is Susan still sawing things off? Is McGraw still making keys? What happened to Ed Gemmell and Neen? What about the Bad Machinery boys? Ryan & Amy? Tim Jones, now that the Reverend has moved in with Shelley? So many more questions!

John Smith

Big fan. Don't have any really great questions prepared but here's what pops into my mind. Some of these I may have asked before? Sorry if that's true. 1. Did the Eisner awards change things for you when you won them, or not really? I've read that when Shigeru Mizuki's Showa won an Eisner it only resulted in a very small sales bump, so I'm curious. 2. Have I already asked you if you have any stories about your work being translated into other languages? Do you ever correspond with the translators? I feel like there are a lot of people in Japan who have never read a Western comic before who would like Bad Machinery, but that may just be a feeling. 3. Have you ever thought about trying your hand at writing song lyrics? Beyond the times when you've done that for the comics. PS: I'm currently re-reading Scary Go Round: Peloton. There's something that I have a question about but I haven't read all the previous volumes so I'm going to wait until after I've done that to see if my question is answered in one of those. PPS: Do you do scripts and then storyboards, or just storyboards? You may have answered this before somewhere. Also feel free not to answer all of these questions.

Simon thomas

What happened to little Claire’s lisp in wicked things?

Luke Drotos

Thought of another question. Have you ever considered also putting your work on a social media platform like Instagram? That app is very welcoming to comics.

Luke Drotos

I’ve heard some interesting stories about how the Giant Days translations did change some jokes to better fit the region they were being published in. As for the non-print ones, it has been something I’ve been thinking about for a bit.

Luke Drotos

And also would that hypothetical volume include Reverend in Love?

Micah C R Guy

Simple question: How are you preparing for Halloween and are there arcane rituals involved? Thanks very much.

unspiek

Apologies if this gets asked and answered all the time, but I'm guessing that there's some sort of family connection between the de Groots and the Grotes; if so, has it been diagrammed somewhere accessible?

scarygoround

They're distant cousins, there's a limited supply. Big eyed beans from Venus, oh my oh my. It's never been discussed.

Aaron Hess

Music and bands seem like a massively important part of the TCU’s texture - do you listen to music while you work, or do you find it distracting during some or all of the process?

Richard J

Looking back at early Bad Machinery, it feels like Sonny and Shauna were meant to be the two main characters around who the ensemble would revolve but as time went Lottie took on this role - was that conscious (I mean, she's a great character) or just how matters evolved?

Tom Hodges

When was the last time Shauna was in your comics?

scarygoround

Great British Bump Off - mid 2023. Prior to that: "Holiday Surprise", Christmas 2022.

scarygoround

The characters all started roughly equal - Charlotte and Shauna had a little extra weight as they were carry-overs from Scary Go Round.

Nathan Campbell

I've never been to the UK. I just watched A Taste of Honey and am fascinated how people talked and related to each other (mainly Manchester I think?) Can you please recommend some further media for my cultural studies

Emil

Whatever happened to all of the Hugo's (yours, Mr. Rowland's, and the real one)?
