Yeah this one is quite terrible ha! I can think of 2 episodes this season that are like that, and I feel that this one is not the worse of the two ha ! At least there's some nice character moments, Buffy is always the best character.. great reaction and analysis, good job 😁

I’m not a fan of anything bug related so the fact there was a huge one in this just grosses me out hahaha. -Hunter

There are certainly several things in buffy that should be left in the 90s... Like angel's age lol. I dont think they were considering too much at this point in the season beyond generically college age. But he's definitely in his 20s. That being said, I think the reaction you had to this episode is the one they wanted. Buffy's hallmark is 'life as metaphor', using monsters/creatures to represent real life things that happen as you grow up. So the 'preying mantis' was a metaphor for a predatory student teacher relationship. I think they wanted you to be disgusted by it and to view the teacher as an abuser/predator.

I'm pretty sure which other episode you mean, and I completely agree.

HiCo

I agree with Hunter, Angel is too old for Buffy.

I was a teen watching at the time and viewing it again now with the benefit of hindsight certainly makes me see things differently. Media was awash with the trope of the horny teenage boys, like the American Pie movie treating predatory behaviour as comedy. While this ep does treat it as a cautionary tale they play it too light imho, laughing off Xander's near rape as a joking matter. I think this one might be the equivalent of the Titans in Xena S1. A naive character looking to impress the hero but getting into trouble with a giant monster because of their literal innocence and virginity. We can enjoy the effects work but the story isn't a particularly satisfying one and can be skipped on a rewatch.

I mean to be honest almost all of Season 1 is awful. But any episode involving rape/sexual assault and nonconsent that doesn’t seriously address that very factor I tend to have greater issues with. ‘Teacher’s Pet’ is portrayed in the right way. They establish that Miss French/Praying Mantis Lady is an actual sexual predator. The problem is they don’t address it seriously for being as serious as it is. Combined with the fact that the episode’s writing misses the mark on so much logic - a lot of which you pointed out - it’s easily one of the worst episodes of the entire show. As you said, the narrative is focused on entirely the wrong thing. Xander’s social outcasting and toxic masculinity because he hasn’t “scored” and is still a virgin makes it seem like that was more important than what was actually going on with the whole predator situation. There were serious themes being acknowledged but not being properly addressed all for the sake of the way Xander thinks and feels. Instead of exploring Xander not feeling “man enough”, they should have explored teacher/student pedophilia and predatory behaviour properly. They had the perfect opportunity to do so with the whole inappropriate “teacher/student” relations thing. But this is why ‘BTVS’ is both a timeless classic and a product of its time. Because of episodes like this one. It really is no wonder why so many people who watch this show don’t like Xander’s character starting off. But as far as I’m concerned, the episode is framed the way that it should be. They could have completely ignored all of that just because the assaulter is a woman like they seem to love to do in the Buffyverse.

Girl4Music

I would watch ‘The Titans’ a thousand times over this episode but you made a good point. 👌

Girl4Music

Anybody that is old enough to notice this will point it out.

Girl4Music

Like I said. It’s framed correctly. Other episodes like it are not. So it gets a thumbs up for that at least.

HiCo

I'd prefer to watch the Titans too tbh.

I'm assuming everybody knows which episode I'm talking about, and it's just a couple of episodes ahead 😅 watch my rant incoming for that one ha!

The criticisms of this episode are deserved, for sure. I do think, though, that this episode was part of a shift in the way this topic was addressed in popular media. Someone else mentioned the American Pie movies (those actively piss me off) and I can think of a dozen other examples of truly horrendous portrayals of human sexuality passed off as totally normal and super funny. I can't quite put this episode in the same bucket. I also hate that the one good teacher Buffy has gets eaten.

Jordxelijah

This is the only season I think Xander will ever be cute.

I can't wait to see y'all reaction of episode 7, episode 7 is my favorite episode of Season 1 🙌🩸🧛🦇 ⚰️
