GABRIELLE NO!

3 seasons it took to get to this point and somehow it felt like a second. Not only has her world changed, but I think all of the viewers along with the characters felt that gasp of "oh shit" when THE moment happened.

It's the beginning of the end folks. Season 3 was not here to play and boy did they make that clear. So interested to see what this does to her character and how it will effect decisions she might have to make in the future.

Fun fact: We watched this the day before we talked to Steven and it took everything in me not to yell at that man for this hahaha.

Fair warning. My voice gets annoyingly high pitched lol. -Hunter

Remember kids, monotheism, just say no!

I remember when I first watched this episode. I screamed and my flabbers were gasted.

The Deliverer is such a deceiving episode. It seems like a normal episode without anything especially important happening, until the last 5-10 minutes that change EVERYTHING. It just goes to show what I always say. You never really see anything unless it’s within your own consciousness. You never see it for what it really is I mean. It’s always an interpretation. Not the objective truth. Something about ‘The Dirty Half Dozen’ where Gabrielle asks Xena “am I really who I am or am I what you made me?” being the episode that comes right before ‘The Deliverer’ where she actively kills someone. Something about both being Steven L. Sears episodes. I don’t know what that “something” is. But it really hits.

Girl4Music

Gabrielle is so attentive when Xena speaks about her past. It’s beautiful. She may not be understanding but she is listening. And that makes all the difference. That’s all Xena needs. Someone to listen to her when she so rarely expresses herself like this. And if you watch this very scene, Xena starts off barely audible and choosing her words carefully and then as she notices Gabrielle isn’t saying anything back, begins to open up more and more because of how much Gabrielle listens and does not judge or criticize her for what she’s telling her about her past. Gabrielle never vilifies her for the sins of her past and that’s really beautiful. An amazingly admirable and inspiring part of their relationship is the respect, acceptance and support they give each other in moments like this. In moments where they feel comfortable enough with each other to tell all - especially Xena - without fear of judgement or criticism. They have a very healthy relationship in this way. I love it.

Lol its worth it, it's so fun to rewatch through new eyes!!

He’s a genius through and through. He’s all about the gray area of morality and exploring that. -Hunter

It's such a clever misdirect too. Having Ceasar there tricking the audience into keeping an eye on him and what he might get up to. Plus us seeing monotheistic religions a few times and they have generally been presented as the good guys so having this bunch be unapologetically evil is quite the twist.

What a ride! So, this was meant to be the season 3 premiere and the beginning of a huge arc for both Xena and Hercules shows. In fact, the 3th season was meant to start with a trilogy: The Deliverer, Gabrielle's Hope and Maternal Instincts (Maternal Instincts wasn't originally what it turn out to be). Dahak was created to be Xena AND Hercules major foe. Rob Tapert wanted to produce major crossover episodes for both shows to increase Hercules ratings and to satisfy Kevin Sorbo's will to his show to go darker. However, Sorbo suffered three strokes during the hiatus and need to be out of comission for a while. So all those Dahak stories for Hercules had to be put on pause until Hercules season 5. But on Xena, they went all out, offering us fans the most creative, bold and epic hours of television. What a show!

Discord was a character from Hercules and Young Hercules. She was the goddess of retribution. She appears later a couple more times.

Steven L Sears said that the audience was as blind as Xena if they though this episode was about Caesar. This story was about hate, reveange and ego and how those feelings blind us from the most important things.

Girl4Music

Yes! And moral grayness is very important to me when it comes to watching or engaging with TV art/entertainment. I very rarely watch anything that’s not morally gray.

Leslie M

I got a shout out from Tash! Answer: The character of Discord is based on the Greek goddess Eris, whom the Romans called Discordia. She was the personification of strife and discord and is found especially in myths involving wars. She is most famous for her role in "the Judgment of Paris," which led to the Trojan War. Eris / Discordia was mad that she didn't get invited to a wedding and showed up to throw a golden apple among the guests, on which was written "for the most beautiful." The goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all claimed it and picked the Trojan prince Paris to decide their dispute over who was the most beautiful. They all offered bribes: Hera offered power over cities; Athena offered wisdom and skill in war; and Aphrodite offered the most beautiful woman in the world. Of course he went for the beautiful woman, Helen, even though she was married King of Sparta, and he took her to Troy. Eris / Discordia also turns up in lots of places in myths about the fighting of the Trojan War.

Now some unsolicited history: We know when this episode take place! Almost. It could be 55-54 B.C., when Julius Caesar invaded Britain, met heavy resistance from the Britons, cut a peace deal and left. None of which stopped him from claiming he had conquered Britain, or has prevented the modern English from claiming that was when they became part of the Roman Empire. Or, the episode could take place 120 years later, in 60-61 A.D., by which time the Romans had actually conquered parts of Britain. Queen Boudica, who appears in this episode, led a rebellion against the Romans after they seized her kingdom, killed her husband and raped her and her daughters. Boudica's army initially had great success, but eventually the Romans got reinforcements and defeated her. She is believed to have committed suicide. She became a mythic folk hero and was adopted as a heroic symbol by woman demanding the right to vote in the early 20th century. P.S. I LOVE the fun references to the myths of King Arthur in the next episode!

Leslie M

I was not annoyed!

Leslie M

Yes, the misdirect is brilliant. The audience is just like Xena in this episode. We get so focused on Caesar and on Xena's vendetta against him that we lose focus on what's really important - Gabrielle!

Leslie M

Me too. I was totally unprepared.

Leslie M

And for some reason I always forget that in the final scene of this episode, the evil temple has turned into Stonehenge. lol

I have been waiting a long time for you to react to this episode. It is one of my favorites of the season and honestly is in my top 10 of the series. However this episodes has some of my favorite scenes. The first one where Gabrielle accidentally kills her, and the one where Xena fights the Deliverer and Gabrielle is up in the air with the fire. I loved how they made us believe that Xena vs Caesar was the main story, but it was actually Gabrielle losing her blood innocence that was the main story.

Genuinely the FIRST time I cried at Gabby killing for the 1st time…only because I KNEW how this would affect Hunter cuz she’s been DREADING this day and it’s finally come 🥺
