One word. EPIC!

We're introduced to not one but TWO very important people in Xena's past life this episode. We also got some much needed and wanted Evil Xena backstory. How did it make you feel when Xena said she would throw away all the years she's had with Gabrielle to kill this child? A bit harsh there Xena lol.

Lao Ma is exactly the person she needed in this time. Everyone deserves a Lao Ma in their lives insert crying emoji . What an extraordinary woman. And of course Borias.. Borias Borias. Their relationship is just as toxic as I thought it was. Although he seems to have a moral compass to him. And we all know Xena doesn't like that lol.

AND THE GABRIELLE BETRAYAL?!?! GIRL I WAS JUST STARTING TO BE ON YOUR SIDE AGAIN!!!

"I hope I never disappoint you Xena", the calm before the storm!!!

'The Debt 1&2' was an interesting turn of events for the show. I think with the introduction of the character Lao Ma you suddenly could interpret Xena's backstory very differently to how you did before because with the establishment of Xena turning evil due to Caesar's betrayal - a past lover in Xena's life - there was also the other side of the coin where - if you want - another past lover in Xena's life had the opportunity of trying to save her from going even further down the evil route and potentially turn her to good again. Interpreting Lao Ma as Xena's first girlfriend, as well as obviously a mentor, provided some context to who Xena really was and that she was struggling with her nature. She wasn't fully evil. she wasn't fully good. She was a mix of dark and light, good and evil, peace and war, violence and pacifism - all these polar opposite contradictions could be seen in her nature so you had to have the characters surrounding her bringing that out. Lao Ma was one of them. And she was so close... yet so far away... Ultimately, Xena turned good on her own but keeping her on the right path was the true challenge... and that's why Gabrielle was so instrumental to Xena's character and her cause for the greater good. It was entirely believable to me that Gabrielle was jealous of Lao Ma because - if you'll allow me to use the 'Dreamworker' water scene analogy, Lao Ma was really the first stone in the ocean after Caesar and if she had the power to pull Xena back into her world and arms enough that Xena would actually kill for her... yeah... it's believable. All of that extra insight only comes into the story of 'The Debt' if you choose to interpret the show as a WLW love story though. If you choose to perceive and understand the characters as queer characters because the show writing leaves it ambiguous enough that you can go either way with it. There's enough room for either way. I just think it's more valuable to interpret all of what goes on in the show as a love story and I specifically think 'The Debt' works for that because it does somewhat validate Xena as a bisexual character.

It’s so great rewatching watching this an adult lesbian. Versus when I was a 10 year-old girl. The line Xena said that the story is about love, thinking back as a kid, I didn’t make the connection that she was talking about Lao Ma now as an adult clearly, that’s what she was talking about.

Heike

I too think that Gabrielle thought she was doing the right thing. She didn’t want Xena to return to her evil path and at that time she didn’t know the whole story yet. While my first reaction to this episode was disappointment I tried to see where Gabrielle was coming from.

André

One of my favourite episodes of the entire show! Hunter you didn't recognized Marton aka Borias! He played Krafstar in the Deliverer episode!

André

We have to understand Gabrielle mind set at this point. She experienced big traumatic situations in the last two episodes and now Xena left her behind to pay a debt to an unknown woman she never heard before??! She was pissed!

Nevvvvvvver recognized him and I’m so upset with myself that I didn’t. -Hunter

2 Girls 1 Episode

I feel she did though. That trip was LONG to get to the ship. And it was implied to me that Xena had told her everything. I do believe Gabrielle always wants to do the right thing but her intentions this time were based on jealousy and not so much saving Xena from her evil past. -Hunter

2 Girls 1 Episode

Rightfully so! I struggle with “Oh she’s still so young and niave” vs “She’s been on the road for years and seen a lot by this point” alllllll the time. She wasn’t thinking at this point. She was jealous of someone she had never met and she was scared Xena would go down her evil path again. I believe she could have easily went with Xena on the boat and watched things play out more before intervening. To get a better understanding of the situation. But love, it makes you do some crazy shit am I right lol. Blinds us all. -Hunter

You two are so bad for me. I had stuff I was going to do, but then these Debts showed up in my inbox and that was the end of my productive afternoon!

Heike

It was probably both jealousy and the fear of Xena returning to her evil paths.

André

😂 Well, he looks quite diferent here.

Btw, in one episode, the girls have moved from Britain in 55 B.C to China in around 550 B.C. They definitely get around. Lao Tzu, the husband who Lao Ma keeps in a drugged coma, was the founder of the Tang dynasty and a famous philosopher who wrote the "Tao Te Ching," the foundational text of Taoism, a beautiful and fascinating religion/philosophy about the Tao, the source of all existence, which focuses on self-cultivation and harmonious existence with all things. Which, as an attempted one-sentence explanation of Taoism is basically absurdly over-simplified nonsense. But clearly Lao Ma is meant to have accessed this harmony of all existence as the basis for her powers. And this being our show, of course this great philosopher is really a woman, even though the man gets the credit in history!

Girl4Music

Love makes you do the crazy and this show shows that and then some. 👍

Girl4Music

I think her finding out that the reason she was doing this was for Lao Ma and not necessarily for vengeance. I think that changed things for her. In a sense, it was probably better just for it to be about vengeance. Involving this random woman that she was in love with and her going back to her - Gabrielle had some concerns.

Girl4Music

I was going to play a GameCube game. Only got passed the first level and then I got the notification in my email. Immediately turned the game off. 😆

Girl4Music

Xena is basically a master class in Taoism because it teaches it without knowing it’s teaching it. Which is the correct way to teach it.

2 Girls 1 Episode

To be fair, if it was any other episodes than these, you probably would’ve waited 😂😂 these are pretty big ones I fear.

Amiee Stahlman

I remember being so angry with Gabrielle. I still am I think. I think she told herself she was doing the right thing, but really it was jealousy and maybe a bit of revenge. She has not processed losing Hope and lying to Xena. She no longer trusts Xena to make good decisions because she never agreed that her baby needed to die. She betrays Xena to prove that theory. If Xena was wrong about Hope, she could be wrong about Ming Tien.

Leslie M

Can we take a moment to appreciate the line, "I don't eat meat"? Possibly the greatest double entendre of all time.

Mats Viktorsson

The underwater kiss is a rip-off from "A Chinese ghost story". But hey, I´m not complaining....

Leslie M

That's why the gods invented re-watches!

HiCo

He also plays Mr Galadriel in Lord of the Rings.

HiCo

The camouflage and emerging from the water is also a homage to Apocalypse Now and nor am I complaining.

Alex Prado

“It not about hate. It’s a story of love”….yeah….she didn’t mean that about Borias, she meant love for Lao Ma 😏

Girl4Music

She 100% meant Lao Ma.

Girl4Music

In the featurette on the DVDs titled ‘Xena’s Hong Kong Origins’ they talked about how they had originally wanted to do the tribute to the underwater kiss in the episode The Path Not Taken between Xena and Marcus but that for some reason it didn’t live and Rob replied with “It lived at the right time.” Implying that he much preferred for this kiss to be between Xena and Lao Ma and not Xena and Marcus. Rob never liked random male love interests for Xena or Gabrielle. He either preferred it to be a male or female character with more history with either one of them or with each other if they had to involve romance at all in the storyline of it. He never liked the random obligatory love interests the network told them to throw in.

Girl4Music

And since then many TV shows have copied it so now you can’t actually escape the double entendre of it. And why would you want to? 🤣

Girl4Music

Ooft that’s messy. I tend to go with the jealousy excuse they came up with later.
