THE DANCE OF LESBIAN LOVE!!! Gosh I love when they have these fabric shots. Spartacus does it too.

This episode has so many lessons for Xena. Truly one of the best of the series (so far). I mean "Learn to serve someone you hate." is the ultimate selfless act she has yet to master here. "To conquer others is to have power. To conquer yourself is to know the way." And for Lao Ma to spit straight literature in her husbands name.... I fear she was the exact person Xena needed in her life at this specific time. Truly a beautiful human on the inside and out. She might just be my favorite limited time only character we've had so far.

I'm always so ecstatic when a new woman from her past emerges to give us more insight to things they have taught her about life. This show really was ahead of its time, but I hope adults will now sit to watch it and grasp everything it has to offer.

The really clever thing about 'The Debt' that I always paid attention to is that none of the characters surrounding Xena in her backstory are actually evil no matter what Xena goes through. They all seem to hold a "weakness" or a place of compassion in their heart somewhere and it's mainly more so the circumstances that cause them to act or behave one way or another to each other. In fact the only character that seems to be really so far gone in terms of emotional connection is Xena. That's really why the juxtaposition from Borias to Lao Ma works as well as it does because she goes from a relationship that's completely about taking and having power - using and abusing each other in order to just get what they want out of their environment regardless of the way they treat each other within it to a relationship filled with care and compassion and tolerance and love in all kinds of ways. Lao Ma always puts Xena first despite how Xena's treated her and even though Xena doesn't understand why she would help her or how she could be nice to her after what she's done to her, Lao Ma is consistent in trying to get Xena to understand that a self-serving desire does not benefit either the giver or the taker in the longterm. That she's merely just poisoning her soul all the more the more she lives for herself in this very hateful, vengeful, wilful, destructive way against humanity. Xena says it's about survival why she behaves like this. That she's only dealing out the brutality that she's been dealt back. But Lao Ma rightly points out... she's already dead spiritually, emotionally, mentally. She's really lost the will to live in the sense of allowing the world to show her that it can be kind and beautiful too. That she's not even giving it the chance to be good to her back. To treat her better because she's already resigned herself to its pains. 'The Debt' story arc is so cleverly, carefully and intentionally crafted to show you that that path Xena's carved out for herself because of Julius Caesar's betrayal in the breaking of both her legs and her spirit simultaneously is only one that will forever destroy Xena even more and in order to become the person that Lao Ma knows she's capable of being, Xena had to let go of all of that anger within so she could correct and heal not just her body but her entire soul and it's karma because if she could do that - if she allowed that to happen - then she'd finally come to the person that would provide her it all back without asking for anything in return. At the time - Xena thinks this person is Lao Ma. But no, Lao Ma is only preparing her for Gabrielle. Then for the creators to bookend all of this with the present day betrayal of Gabrielle just makes this story arc all the more powerful because then Xena proves she's truly put aside her past and a life of death and destruction by forgiving her, by understanding her, by loving her even though Gabrielle has done an awful thing to her. She's realized that even though hurt people hurt people - there is still a choice that the individual can make if their ego can allow them to see and get passed the anguish. To choose to comfort instead. That's what 'The Debt' is about. That's what Xena and Lao Ma is about. Watch it again and notice how every character is human and shows their humanity somewhere. Even if it's not to Xena. But they show you that every character in Xena's backstory is not a monster besides one. Ming Tien - who is too young to learn any such lesson and had to be put down because his influence of power would cause far more chaos and pain than his own life was worth and Xena makes the choice to kill him - without telling Gabrielle - because she knows that she created that monster so she knows that he is beyond the pale. He cannot be saved and he cannot be left to his own devices. She makes that judgement call not out of vengeance, but mercy because at the end of the day her cause was for the greater good and the person that originally instilled that conviction into her - that even named her 'the warrior princess' - is not a man, but a woman and the only person that can keep her in that conviction and on that right path that is truly destined for Xena, is also a woman. Gabrielle. Gabrielle is her destiny. Her cornerstone to living. Her future. Her way forward in life and love. That's the story there. That's what they're really saying in 'The Debt'. As I've said before... this is not a TV show about heroes vs villains. It's about actions vs consequences. It's about the human conditions and circumstances. It's about doing what we can when and where we believe we should. There is no inherent good or evil, right or wrong..., it all just depends on who we are and how we react in the moment and all the people surrounding us are there to bring that out in us whether we know it at the time or not. That's how life even works. To provide that much reality and truth in an action fantasy show... wow. I love these episodes so fucking much. I love the characters, the themes, the arcs, the sets. I love the contrasting tones of edginess and grittiness with gentleness and smoothness. I love the LIFE in it when it's otherwise showing you the lead character at her deadest because the point is for her to realize and understand it's not the end for her but she has to make those choices and take those actions and ultimately allow LIFE in again. To allow her spirit to take flight and stop corrupting and sabotaging her own goodness and beauty by constantly choosing hate and revenge and rage and destruction because there's just as much power and control in the opposite. Lao Ma is known to be hard and soft at the same time like water because she's mastered the ability to silence her ego and will. She's so powerful and influential and disciplined in the way of her being because she's learned how to conquer herself rather than others and we all should honestly learn from her example, not just Xena because humans do get in their own way. We're made that way because we have free will. But then that means that we can choose the opposite. We can freely choose whether to perpetuate our own self-serving goals or look in the mirror and change our life by changing ourselves.

Hunter's reaction to Ming T'ien's death was hilarious! 😂 That's our show!

Watching the show now Gabrielle often kinda seems like the definition of „oh my sweet summer child“, trying to see the good in everyone. That’s one of the reasons I was such a Gab fan. But having more life experience now I know that’s an illusion- there are evil people. Gosh I love the show so much! It’s so much fun watching it again. I watched a few more episodes of season three wondering how Hunter will react and I can’t wait.

At this point Lucy had turned down all the offers to make a Xena movie because she didn't want to play more Xena in her hiatus time (that is something she regreats now). So Rob and RJ Stewart made this two episodes because this was the movie that they wanted to do almost from the beginning of Xena. This two episodes are another level!

We love Gabrielle for always seeing the good in people because 80% of the time, it works. But that 20% makes me wanna throw some mud at her for trusting people so easily 😂 Oh season 3 has had so many ups and downs so far hahah. -Hunter

2 Girls 1 Episode

I was wondering why he was so still 😂 and now upon my rewatches, those Love Yous piss me off so bad. I know they really mean it but it was all said mixed in liesssssss 😮‍💨 -Hunter

It’s so interesting to me seeing the lessons Xena has learned from her past and how they affect her future. Because you’re right. Her choosing the put aside her hatred or her ego to forgive someone or to save someone else is exactly what Lao Ma was trying to teach her back then. That to me has been my favorite thing to see so far. It’s such an important lesson for everyone to have going through life. -Hunter

This is why I always tell people to pay attention to Xena’s evolution just as much as Gabrielle’s. Yeah, Gabrielle’s development is more obvious but the main theme in Xena’s arc isn’t just redemption and it isn’t just love. It’s redemptive love. The two combined together make this something else. Something far more in depth than any of the creators could have foreseen.

I loved when Hunter said, "Xena's going to save him. Watch!" Oh no, girl. Not our Xena, lol.

2 Girls 1 Episode

She saves them like 75% of the time now 😂😂 you never reeeeeally know with her.

That wooden pillory thing Xena and the other prisoners have around their necks was a real punishment used in China and other parts of the world until the early 20th century. In China it was called a cangue. The prisoners would actually be let go wearing them and had to carry them with their hands. They would be totally helpless and dependent on other people to feed them and, as a result, many of them starved. Pretty horrifying.

The thing with The Debt episodes is no one is exactly in the wrong but because of the misunderstanding of the mission and Gabrielle's subsequent naivety before finding out Ming Tien is The Green Dragon and is truthfully the tyrant Xena and Lao Ma has made him out to be... They both do things that are in confliction with each other. Were they to be totally honest with each other and communicate openly and thoroughly throughout the whole journey leading up to Xena catching a boat to the Kingdom of Chin... They would have understood the situation and each other more clearly. Gabrielle probably would have gone with Xena all the way to Chin to carry out the mission with her, understanding the very same as Xena did about Lao Ma's vague message of: "The Green Dragon has become too large and must be made small." Was Lao Ma asking her to kill Ming Tien? Xena interpreted it that way. And in the end, she decided to kill him... And hide that truth from Gabrielle, stating that it was enough that he lost his reputation as a ruler and thus the devotion of his people. You can chalk the situation with The Debt down to lack of communication, honesty, trust and understanding on both their parts. No one did anything wrong as such... They just got into deep conflict. The underpinnings of their eventual and inevitable 'Rift'.

Girl4Music

It’s a classic case of “kill them” or “enlighten them”. This Xena prefers the former.

Girl4Music

Plus the torture of not being able to scratch your own nose. For some people that’s life threatening.

Will King

One of my favorite scenes is when Gabrielle and Xena are in the dungeon and Xena asks Gabrielle to scratch her nose. That scene makes me so emotional. Gabrielle sees her huge error, and Xena is quick to forgive because she knows Gabrielle's heart. The only thing that I will say that I have a hard time believing still to this day is that Xena would choose to leave Gabrielle right after Gabrielle went through the worst thing in her life (aka killing a person and then giving birth to a demon daughter.) Despite this though i love these two episodes. I love that we get more of Xena's evil past, and we get to meet Borias! Lao Ma...such a unforgettable character and her scenes with Xena were top notch.

GIBITS Oak

Was this the first time they both said I love you to teach other in person and not when one of them were dead or unconscious? Lol

Girl4Music

Yeah, I believe it was. I mean Xena almost said it in ‘The Price’ but I think this definitely was the first time they said it to each other.

André

Did you guys noticed that Lao Ma was the one that gave Xena the title of Warrior Princess? And in Lao Ma palace several halls entrances had the chakram design? Was Rob Gillies, the production designer, giving us clues of what the origin of the chakram was? Because by this time the producers were discussing if they should or not explain to us when and how Xena got the chakram and maybe in an early script version of the debts they had Lao Ma giving it to Xena. I really don't know. I mean we later found out how Xena got it but I just find interesting that Gillies made that decision. What do you think?

2 Girls 1 Episode

I did notice both of these things upon my rewatch the next day and I was in shambles. Seeing the hall entrances be the Chakram I thought I was the only one to ever notice this. But I wasn’t 😂 and yes her Warrior Princess title came from her although it makes me sad it’s used with so much malice that she almost can’t stomach people calling her that. That or it just reminds her of Lao Ma 😭 -Hunter

Thank could never remember when it was!

So please anyone correct me if I’m wrong, (I’m not too familiar with Asian cultures) but I’ve recently watched The Apothecary Diaries (reading the Manga now too) in there they show a lot about palace life/customs and specifically about hair pins. Now rewatching the Debts, I can’t help but see the significance of Lao Ma giving Xena her hair pin! In the Apothecaries, someone giving another person a hair pin it’s making a statement that you’re interested/intending to have a relationship with the recipient. And if the recipient chooses to wear it they are making a statement to all that they accept. So the fact Lao Ma gives her the pin but then also Xena reciprocated it she was claiming Lao Ma as well. Anyway just fascinating to see now and I wonder if the writers knew about that custom. Again if that is something that is true in some Asian cultures.

HiCo

What a pair of episodes! It is kinda wild that these are regular episodes not a season opener or finale or a movie for that matter. Visually sumptuous and with such an incredible story. What a journey we all go on together, characters and viewers.

Girl4Music

Don’t doubt it. They also knew about the Ancient Greek marriage custom of proposing to someone by tossing an apple and if the person catches it, they said yes. Xena tosses an apple to Gabrielle in ‘Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts’. Gabrielle not only catches it but immediately starts eating it.

“It’s so motherly” will be my new comment for every video that involves lesbian context Hunter 😂😏😂

2 Girls 1 Episode

Hey now, being motherly to someone isn’t a bad thing. It means she’s being taken care of and nurtured in my eyes. Which my little baby Xena needed at the time. NOW THE DANCE OF LESBIAN LOVE WAS HOT AND SENSUAL!!

Jordan Weinberg

Hunter’s emotional dependence on the pop figures is such a mood and SAME😭
