Rage. All I feel is just pure rage and sadness watching this. When I said I wanted Solan back, this is not what the hell I meant. Xena didn't even get to watch him grow up? She's seen him twice... TWICE! And the way they lull you into a false sense of family..

I'll never get her scream out of my head. Ever.

The Rift is so devastating to witness. Of course Gabrielle didn't know this would happen back when she lied about Hope being dead. The minute Hope was back, Xena should have known about it. Just like she wants to protect Hope, Xena wants to protect Solan. UGH I hate this. I hate this. I HATE THIS.

Great Reaction! Like I said in a previous episode this is my all time favorite episode of this series and of any series I have seen. My favorite villain of the series returns "Callisto". I think it was the best decision to bring her back in this episode. Callisto has been seeking revenge for the longest time and because of Gabrielle's daughter Hope she gets her revenge. One of the things that I love about this episode is the dialogue between Xena and Callisto in the cave. Callisto says that she thought she would feel better if she finally got her revenge only to feel nothing. Xena is like "you think I am supposed to care that you feel nothing?" It was great seeing Ephinany return. I am glad she escaped this episode unscathed. Poor Kaliopas! He didn't deserve that. We finally get to the scene where Gabrielle finally tells Xena that she didn't kill Hope. That was painful to watch but not as painful as hearing Xena scream over her son's death. The last few minutes at Solan and Hope's funeral was probably the most painful scene. Watching two characters that we love hurting but also torn apart was just heartbreaking. "I love you" to Xena made me have all the tears. I will also say the acting in this episode was top notch all the way around. The actress (Amy Morrison) who played Hope was so GOOD!!

This episode was writen by Chris Manheim who was a producer of Xena and one of the main writers of the show next to RJ Stewart and Steven L Sears. I think she, from all the writers, gave us the most diverse type of episodes. Up to this point, she wrote The Prodigal, Altared States, Remember Nothing(it was an idea of Steven Sears for a season one episode but the producers didn't wanted to do it so soon and he hand it over to Chris), A Solstice Carol, Here She Comes...Miss Amphipolis, The Quest (with Steve and RJ), A Comedy of Eros, Maternal Instincs and The Bitter Suite (with Steve and RJ). Unfortunatly she passed away around a year ago but she was loved by the cast, fellow writers and producers. Renee said that Chris husband told her that Chris was so proud of the Xena show. She loved the show.

From what I understand, when this season aired some hardcore fans at the time didn't liked this arc because they couldn't stand the rift between Xena and Gabrielle. They though that Gabrielle would never lie to Xena about Hope and that she would never betray Xena the way she did in The Debts. Well, I loved it. It all made sense to me given the circustances. I am not saying that I agree with her decisions, I don't, but I can see what led her to make them. Also I think a "rift" also occured in the writers room when all this arc was being discused. I heard that Steven Sears didn't like or agreed with what RJ and Rob did with Gabrielle in The Debts episodes. Even Renee had some trouble accepting Gabrielle's decisions in these episodes. Differences aside, they gave us so much! What a talented group of people. Every time I watch this show I am mesmerized with the quality. And it looks incredible.

Yes to all of that, and good shout out to Amy Morrison. I was thinking about that while watching this. Hope is so pivotal to this episode that a poor performance could have been disastrous. She was great.

The joy of watching reactions is that it is the closest to being able to watch something again for the first time. Seeing someone experience eps like this are magic. Magic that made tears run down my face ngl. I just feel so bad for all three of my fave girls here. With Xena it's not just Solan's death but it's the way that she almost got him back and was nearly able to tell him that she was his mother all along. To be that close to something she thought she had lost so long ago and to have him torn away from her just before is another crushing hurt on top of all the rest Xena carries every day. The betrayal only twisting the knife in deeper. With Gabrielle it's so similar. She thought she'd never see Hope again but had been given a second chance. Her optimism and way of seeing the good in anyone cruelly used against her. This has brought rushing back all the repressed feeling about the worst experience of her entire life that she has had to keep secret from Xena. Ephiny is the first person she was able to talk to about what happened in Britiania and what she had to do to Hope. Gabrielle is a hair's breath away from drinking the last of the poison and ending herself right there too. It's just heartbreaking. I did say three girls because I always feel bad for Callisto. Even here where she has a victory of sorts, it is completely hollow for her. She is so lost and broken that nothing at all can help her and I find thaylt so tragic. Not on the same level as Xena and Gabs in this ep obviously but it just adds to the wider tragedy. I will add that I am a Hope defender in so far as I don't think she would have turned out evil like this had Xena not tried to kill her. I think had Gabrielle been allowed to raise her, her fate would have been very different. One of the main themes of the series at a whole is people having a dark and light side and that redemption is possible, except for Hope. It's sometimes said the best way to hide a lie is with a truth and I believe Hope is speaking truly when she lashes out at Gabrielle saying her mother tried to drown her in a basket. Yes she is trying to manipulate Gabrielle but my take is that Hope was very aware of Xena trying to kill her and thinks Gabrielle tried to do so too. She may be all of 1 year old at this point, abandoned to the world and she is lashing back at those who hurt her. She is not right to do so but it could have been avoided had things gone down different in Gabrielle's Hope.

I had to the first time I watched it. It was horrible!

Jordan Weinberg

Oh my god this is so funny because I genuinely almost skipped out on therapy to watch☠️ I realized that would be objectively insane and I made the responsible decision but BARELY.

Kel

LOL...yeah big difference between being an old lady huffing and puffing at karate and going to therapy. You definitely made the right choice! But glad I'm not the only one on that obsession level.

Kel

I remember those fans. But they are also the ones that would have just loved to have a love fest every single week with no drama. Being of the school of put your characters through as much as possible so they earn the good times, they drove me insane. And I feel like, yeah, sometimes people do things that make no sense even to themselves so it's okay to have slightly out of character moments too. It's really what made this show so good IMO.

Amber

Love how Hudson played Callisto's reaction to hearing Xena's cry...the look of initial ecstasy and fulfillment, followed by the realization that it was for nothing. That it left her empty. I love the arc of a villain who basically power-up's until she can finally take her vengeance, but then is left with despair, longing for death...but she's become too powerful to die, and finally trapped to suffer for eternity.

André

When Rob and RJ Stewart developed the story for "Gabrielle's Hope", Hope was undoubtedly pure Evil for them. RJ said that, when he was writing the script, Xena was 100% right in her decision to kill her because Hope would grow to be the biggest threat to mankind. And that was always my perception of Hope. I mean, Hope was just a newborn baby when she killed for the first time. There was no way Gabrielle could turn away Hope from her dark side because darkness was not just a side of her, it was what Hope was all about. For me, she was born from Dahak, who was pure evil, and Gabrielle was just an incubator. So, she was not even half Gabrielle, she was all Dahak creation. But, I understand why Gabrielle believed for a moment that she could change her. It was her maternal instincts. I also feel that Xena was a bit dismissive of Gabrielle's pain and shock in "Gabrielle's Hope".

HiCo

I know I'm likely in the minority here. Renée also hates Hope when she is asked about her at cons. I just don't feel labelling her as pure evil fits with the wider theme of redemption that runs through the show or is as interesting as saying she is like this because of bad choices made by our heroes. Callisto woud not be as interesting a villain without her backstory. They could have written her to have been born evil and show up cackling like Skeletor that she hates nice things but what we got was way better than that. With Hope, I think there is enough ambiguity there for different interpretations.

André

Yes, I agree it became ambiguous later on because other writers wrote the character Hope and they add diferent perspectives of who she was and what her whole arc was about. That ambiguity makes everything more appealing because otherwise that would not be any reason for us to belive that Gabrielle had her own doubts about Hope. Again, this show its an incredible explosion of creativity.

I know you didn’t just skip over the fact this is Gabrielle’s second kill. Surely you must have talked about that off-screen because it’s a huge deal that the next time she kills someone after her first kill is her own child. But to emphasise a little bit on what Hunter said about how the writers weren’t afraid to go there with Xena and Gabrielle this season. This is what stands out about conflict between Xena and Gabrielle compared to other shows with lead female characters. They knew it would not work at all if they had just chose a conflict of them fighting over a guy/girl they’re attracted to or any other family shenanigans. They knew the stakes would be far too low and just not believable at all that they could fall out over something like that. They had to go all out and involve their kids. They had to push them that far to be able to make this rift between them happen believably. But the question really is - is it possible for them to make up and come back together after it? How do they resolve this colossal conflict between them? What couples therapy method could mend their relationship? How do they come out of conflict and return to love after something this awful and intense has happened between them? That was the real challenge in this story. The set up of the conflict was easy compared to the conflict resolution. And by the gods, I don’t think I have ever witnessed better conflict resolution than in Xena. What they achieve in this arc is just remarkable and it only just goes to prove to you how truly incredible the writing in this show is that they’re able to achieve it at all after this because a conflict like this in any other TV show would not have been able to do it.

2 Girls 1 Episode

The way the managed to let Xena get her vengeance (aka killing Illusia Gabrielle) and have her realize it wouldn’t have solved her sadness by doing so. Ugh CHEF’S KISS.

Girl4Music

LUCY LAWLESS: "What you find out is that deceit is an interesting thing to explore as a character because humans do do it for whatever reason; to protect the other person, to make things easier for themselves now but it has an awful kickback later. Nasty sting in its tail. Human beings do do that. Even people that love one another." When it comes to drama and conflict and contention in a relationship that's to the depth and intensity as Xena and Gabrielle's is... I don't think any TV show has ever done it better than the XENA team did because they really cared about who these characters were and where they were going in their own main lead character individual representation - that they just instinctively wrote both an extremely compelling and authentic journey for their relationship in Season 3.

Girl4Music

She created her own torment then. Nothing to do with Xena.

Girl4Music

🎶all of your anger will poison you yet, unless you can just let gooooooo🎶 As Xena herself once said when inside of Callisto’s body, that although she’s quick to anger, she’s lived with anger longer and therefore can keep calmer than most can. And it’s in her calmness where she realizes the severity of what she’s just done to her.
