The world's first music episode! Still don't really like a musical episode in the middle of a series just because it always feels off, but I totally understand why they decided to have it this way. I mean your true emotions and feelings always come out through song and dance right?

That tango lives in my head RENT FREE. I swear, those two together... Magic. Although around Gabrielle's dead body is fucking WILD behavior. But our girls are very Disney coded here. Especially singing a song about coming together to love each other again.. The genius way they used the waterfall to clear out all their secrets and past demons.

And then the Solan scene... We needed that more than anything. She never got to tell him who she was or that she loved him. Queue the waterworks.

Oh man the memories of when this first came out. The GabDrag was such the controversy in the fandom because people saw it as domestic violence and so it was NOT well received (even if an understandable thing for ex-warlord Xena who's been egged on by Ares). But I've always loved this. Bought the CD and listened to it SO much back then (just checked and it's on Amazon Music so guess what I'll be listening to on my walks for a while). And all the tarot imagery is so much fun. And, yes, Buffy you didn't do this first! Great reactions and SO can't wait for One Against an Army!

GIBITS Oak

First of all thank you for acknowledging how Buffy tries to claim the first musical! Will comment more later!

There are so many layers to this episode. Everything they did had meaning to it. Love the use of tarot cards.

oh i’m so excited for the next episode, it’s one of my favorites in the whole show

2026-10-17 09:00 I understand this was one of the hardest episodes to produce. One of my favorites too. It hit all all cylinders for me. Lucy can really sing. Renee is an incredible actor. Wait till Hunter see what's coming ahead.

I don't doubt that some uninformed fans have claimed that. Uninformed fans of all sorts of shows say all sorts of things. But I can't believe that anybody actually associated with the show has ever claimed they did the first musical.

André

A bit like Hunter, when I saw this episode for the first time I was not expecting it or wanted a musical episode. I mean, I didn't even considerated it. I am not a big fan of musicals in general. However, when Xena enters the fortress and Gabrielle arrives to Potedeia I was very impressed. It was a bold choise and I totally understand the reason they chose to do it. This was a huge production. They even hired a broadway choreographer. And big applause to Oley Sassone who directed this episode and other masterpieces episodes like The Price, The Deliverer and The Debt part 1 and 2.

André

Another thing I really have to say is that this show in general looks incredible. People who never saw Xena before can't believe this show was filmed 30 years ago. It has a visual and sound quality that very few TV shows had at the time. It is cinematic. Xena was super succesfull in the States and around the world but it never was fully recognized by the critics only because it was syndication. It didn't had a big network behind it so for them it was kinda irrelevant. But I saw through the years the way Xena influenced Hollywood. Big names like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino loved the show. It was mentioned everywhere. As for the Buffy comparisons, Xena made Buffy look like a sitcom.

GIBITS Oak

You’re right I never heard any from the show say it specifically but they do know that many many fans and others claim it. And no one from the show acknowledges Xena doing it before them. Btw I do love Buffy, this is just something that has frustrated me.

I think this episode is sheer genius. Like Hunter, I was a little taken aback the first time I watched it. "What the hell is going on? They're all singing and dancing in this weird place???" But I also totally agree with Tash that it was the perfect way to follow up Maternal Instincts. There is no way in a realistic world that our girls could have reconciled after Gabrielle's daughter murdered Xena's son, in part due to Gabrielle's naivety, leading Gabrielle to then kill her own daughter. (I say "in part" because obviously Hope engineered the whole thing to happen this way precisely to divide Xena from Gabrielle and thus leave her unable to oppose Dahak). Such a reconciliation is an impossible story line to make credible. So the reconciliation had to come via something "unrealistic." There was no other way. And nothing could be better than through music, which people use to express their deepest emotions. To me, The Bitter Suite (and how great is that name!) is pure opera. The story is told entirely through singing, the music is soaring and spectacular, the emotions and the drama are overwhelming. Fantastic work by Joe LoDuca, another one of the gang of kids that grew up in Michigan with Sam Raimi and company. His first film was, you guessed it, Evil Dead. He did the music throughout the series, and I think it adds tremendously to the show. And, of course, we get the treat of Lucy's extraordinary singing for an entire episode. Plus a CD! Hunter, I hope on rewatch, when you had a chance to get used to musical nature of the episode and listen carefully to the songs, that you have been able to fully appreciate it. It's a lot to take in the first time, especially when you're also supposed to be commenting. And I don't envy Tash having to figure out how to edit this episode for YouTube.

André

Fun fact: This was Zoe Bell first job on Xena before she became Lucy's stundouble in season 4. She was the first amazon that Xena hits with the staff.

Mats Viktorsson

There had been musical episodes before, but this is the first time (to my knowledge) that the music was integrated in a storyline. You gotta give it to Rob. He had some balls, for sure. Still looks and sounds amazing!!

Mats Viktorsson

If you want to hear Renee sing for real, she and Lucy did a version of "We can work it out". I think it´s available on Spotify

2 Girls 1 Episode

Oh it’s actually so good. I’ve just come to the realization I just don’t like the first song with Callisto 😂 that one still throws me off for some reason but the episode as a whole was like you said, the best way they could have come back together. I mean by the end of it you have them singing “Love will be our guide” like a damn disney movie. It’s so so good. And the scene of her reuniting with Solan is just a cherry on top for me. Kevin’s singing is 🤤 I love it all. But on first watch, it is a bit jarring hahaha -H

Will King

I had so much fun rewatching this with ya'll. I know all the words to all the songs in this episode so I was singing along! I remember when they made a soundtrack of this episode and I got it for Christmas the year it came out.

Heike

It was so painful to watch when it first aired. The “Gab Drag“- horrible! Watching it now - and I haven’t in a loooong time - makes me even more mad at Xena. Obviously I can’t say why yet, but dang. And Ares- I can’t even! He was such a bad influence and while I can appreciate Kevin and Lucy‘s chemistry on screen I‘ll never not hate Ares. But he was the God of War after all. Kevin did a fantastic job! [edit to add that nothing in this show is just black and white. I think Gabrielle got more hate in the rift arc than she deserved. Both of them have motives for how they‘re acting. I love both but there‘s times I couldn’t stand neither Xena nor Gabrielle. It’s a great show! I could talk hours about it, but since English isn’t my first language it would take ages to write down.]

Gretam

Hunter, i feel like i can 100% understand what you're feeling with a bit of disappointment about this being the follow up to maternal instincts. And that's as someone who absolutely puts this episode in their top 5, and i reckon in time you will too. But I think i can vaguely recall from watching this live all those years ago that i did feel kind of robbed of the genuine, Real world kind of "what's next" from the catastrophic events of maternal instincts and it does feel like they just kind of slap a band aid on it so they can move on. But rest assured that even though... that is kind of what they did so they could continue on without being caught too much in the drama of it.. they do not simply leave all this in the past and move on. What happened here continues to effect and shape these characters and their relationship for the next 3 seasons. The just had to make it palatable for the casual viewer aswell as the avid viewer. I think the next episode is just as important as a follow up to maternal instincts as this one.

Gretam

Just a little side note. I think the swift resolution of their issues actually makes perfect sense as a couple that are completely co dependent. A really truly co dependent couple will always find ways to forgive each other. At this point i don't think it's a stretch at all to say that these guys don't really know how to keep on going without each other. So it makes sense they were both leaning towards resolution despite how bad things got. I

Rayve

I think Steven has said that if the bitter suite doesn’t happen, it’s 6+ episodes to resolve the rift and then you can’t get to the other stories and progress. The lyrics really help (and tarot imagery if you dig in) sell it, that it acknowledges their past and hurt and then draws them back to each other to begin working through it.

Rayve

Also the soundtrack is great and I can still sing along with every word 😂

Leslie M

That first song with Callisto can be kind of jarring, especially when you're not expecting either a musical or the fantasy setting. But I get mesmerized by Hudson. That woman could be a gymnast! Watching her lower herself to floor level and gracefully walk toward the camera is mind-blowing. If I ever managed to get into that position, they'd have to bring in a crane to get me back up, lol.

Leslie M

That's a really interesting perspective.

Amber

Aah, all the tarot imagery and trying to decipher the deeper meanings behind every image and scene change! I had so much fun with this one back in the day. And regarding the Buffy of it all...it was my understanding at the time that the shows had a sort of friendly rivalry/mutual respect thing going, as they were each looking to push boundaries and do things that hadn't been done before (eg: Buffy hit it out of the park with their answer to the challenge of 'try to do an episode where the characters can't talk'). They had similar sources of inspiration; Buffy did a Xena mention in an ep, and Xena had their bacchae/vampire ep. I was a Xena-holic from day one, but they're both fantastic shows that weren't afraid to challenge their audience.

‘The Bitter Suite’ is couple’s therapy in a musical event. It worked extremely well for them. Thank you, Solan. As Steven L. Sears once explained though, ‘The Bitter Suite’ was never meant to repair the damage or undo what happened. It was just meant to erase the hate and have the lead characters forgive each other since they couldn’t take back what they did to each other. It put them both on a level-playing field of making amends. Suddenly the TV show was a redemption story for both. And first and foremost to each other over anyone else. Just like they became heroes and the greater good to each other. That’s what makes this entire show so good and groundbreaking. Because it’s about THEM and how their forever-growing and evolving relationship informs the Universe around them so that it all works together. Literally the love between them is the reason why the show can even be the show. It couldn’t work without it.

Girl4Music

Watching ‘The Bitter Suite’ for gods knows how many times and thinking about how in the hell they did this. Not just the fact it’s the first TV musical episode. But I wonder how many WLW rivalries they call ‘The Rift’ in TV art/entertainment. I wonder how many are resolved just as successfully as they are set up to fall out of love. We don’t talk about it really but how remarkable is it to go through what Xena and Gabrielle did with each other and still come out successfully even more in love for it. ‘The Rift’ may be the most successful angst arc to ever exist in the entirety of TV art/entertainment and the whole thing happens between two female characters. Insane shit. Would never happen with any other show unless the female characters are explicitly canon text. Even then it likely wouldn’t have been done this well. In a musical which effectively serves as the equivalent of couple’s therapy all the while claiming they’re subtext. Rob Tapert and Co have no idea what they achieved.

Girl4Music

There’s something about Solan morphing into Gabrielle at the end of ‘The Bitter Suite’. I think it’s that he is the only other formative influence on Xena to turn good for the sake protecting and defending those that cannot. He has such a profound effect on her development that when faced with that orphaned baby situation in ‘The Gauntlet’ in ‘Hercules The Legendary Journeys’, that’s when she decides to fight for the innocent and to help the helpless. It’s then something she herself tries to teach Marcus in ‘The Path Not Taken’/‘Mortal Beloved’. Would she have done that if she had never had Solan? Would she have done that had she never met Gabrielle? As per the metaphor in ‘Dreamworker’: the first stone thrown into the ocean creates a rippling effect. But it’s interesting to me how Xena only views that as negative because she can’t ever see herself as a good person for doing what she’s doing in the moment. Only in her past. It’s just something I always think about because it’s said that Hercules turned Xena good. But Hercules himself would be the first person to say that isn’t true because he understands doing good for the sake of it. With no selfish motive or with no benefit to one’s self. He is inherently a good person because of that reason and he attempts to tell Xena in ‘Prometheus’ the same. That she is needed because she has the right mindset. But then mixes the message up with his feelings for her which makes Xena think he is only saying it because of that and not because it genuinely is the truth about her which - fortunately - is not something that really comes across with Gabrielle though she is affected by that too. It’s a series of consistent influences that turns Xena good. But at the end of the day it’s Xena that did it because she chooses to put the greater good first. So really,… what Gabrielle represents for Xena is not a moral compass. It’s a reminder she already has one because it is so easy for Xena to forget that she is good when all she ever feels inside is the guilt that she is evil. Yet that is the thing that forces her to turn herself around to begin with. That deep sense of remorse. And that is a self-destructive pattern for her because it’s all about how it harms or hinders her… that is until she meets and falls in love with Gabrielle. Constantly learning from her way of doing things that Gabrielle herself doesn’t even realize is the right way for her at that point in the show but is following instinctively. That’s when Xena’s able to see her own worth in the serving of the greater good. That reminder of her own capability of doing good for the sake of doing good.

Girl4Music

As for the ‘Xena Did It First!’ attestment. Technically it was ‘I Love Lucy’ with The Operetta in 1952. But that just included musical numbers in the episode. It wasn’t actually a TV show musical episode. Xena was the first to do an intended TV show musical. However, Joss Whedon took inspiration from it and perfected it with Buffy’s ‘Once More, With Feeling’ therefore ‘BtVS’ is often cited as first one to do it. Both ‘The Bitter Suite’ and ‘Once More, With Feeling’ have a very similar concept in that characters reveal through song their undisclosed emotions or desires and therefore they feel a cut above when it comes to shows that do musical numbers as there is purpose therefore they’re not just doing it just because it can be done. Xena’s second musical episode is more along the lines of what you actually expect a TV musical episode to be.

I understand your sentiments on Gabrielle, however I don’t agree. This is why… For me, I found Gabrielle to be more endearing during Season 3. They’re both abusive to each other. Look at the way Xena dragged Gabrielle and actively tried to kill her by attempting to throw her off a cliff. She’s even emotionally abusive in some ways too. Like parading and romancing men and women around right in front of Gabrielle like she had no respect for her. It may seem like an awful thing the way they treat each other in Season 3, but there is a hidden desguise of feelings of love and care for each other under it. To understand this, you need to understand the theme of balance and of the nature of ‘yin-yang’. ‘The Bitter Suite’ captures so poetically the use of peace VS war, dark VS light and good VS evil. It captures the obvious distinction between both as well as the oblivious transparency between both as well. Showing that love is the only reason why it all happens in the first place. Maybe not just love for each other, but love for themselves as well. It is difficult to understand and I have explained it better elsewhere, but it does require a broad consciousness of duality/nonduality to understand it. The feelings hidden under the surface are what you are forgetting in your analyzation of this. Perhaps watch ‘The Bitter Suite’ a few more times or watch 'Paradise Found’ in Season 4… You might get what I mean a little bit more. As somebody that understands yin-yang, I can tell you that although complementary, yin and yang aren't always collaborative. Sometimes they can be combative and that's because it's required in their very nature to contradict. When you look at the Tao symbol, the two fish are biting each other's tail trying to eat each other and that's the only way they can go round and round similiar to the circle of life philosophy used in The Lion King. It's the only way anything in life moves. The energies of both positive and negative are necessary to existence's evolution. They need BOTH or they will have NEITHER. The show tries to teach the importance of balance not only through Xena and Gabrielle but also through Ares and Aphrodite. And I have a post all about why both are important to planet Earth and life itself if you're interested in reading it. It explains how fundamentally Love and War are one in the same and not seperate as they are so often portrayed. Read it. I explain it much better. The energy of the Universe is so often misunderstood simply because life believes it to be seperate and different when it isn't. Not when you go deeper anyway. On the surface it seems that way but most people don't ever look passed that and so they miss a lot of necessary information on the way the Universe works out. And yin and yang is extremely misinterpreted by Western culture in particular for this very reason. And to truly understand Xena and Gabrielle as a unit or as one soul inhabiting two bodies as per analysis and conclusion to my character study thesis on them, you have to understand that they won't always be friends and lovers in every life or even every timeline. They will be enemies too but that's the way it works. They're everything to each other. This unfortunately does include abuse too. Only on a deeper or greater level of understanding can you let the abuse slide and even come to view it as necessary to their evolution. Which is why it's so controversial for a Westerner to watch the show and see this side of Xena and Gabrielle. 'The Rift' in particular is a hard pill to swallow, and yet is effectively also the treatment. I assume that's partly why they call the break up and make up episode 'The Bitter Suite'. A play off of the term 'bittersweet'. You love to watch the pain and angst of it because you know that's why and how they return to love again.

The symbolism of ‘The Bitter Suite’. The brilliance of the two time Emmy award-nominated musical episode of 'Xena: Warrior Princess’, 'The Bitter Suite’ is it’s symbolism. The land of 'Illusia’ is all based off of the 'Rider-Waite Tarot deck’ as well as duality. The attempt to combine the two sets of themes and imagery is what 'The Bitter Suite’ is all about. “It’s us. Somehow it’s all about us…. Everything about this 'Illusia’ place has been bright and cheery. The music, the colours. But this place is dark. It’s meant to scare us.” “Everything about this world has been a torment. We’ve been guided through it for a reason. Whatever happens, we have to go through it together.” "Hatred, Gabrielle, that’s what we’re fighting, hatred.” It is all about Xena and Gabrielle. They are the “Yin” and “Yang” of the story of 'Illusia’. That’s why they’re depicted as opposites within it. The point behind 'Illusia’ is for Xena and Gabrielle to realize that everything they do to each other, positive or negative, is because they truly do love each other and go to extremes lengths to show it. The characters that show up in 'Illusia’ are from the the Major Arcana deck of cards and they represent the meaning of the moment or the mood of Xena and Gabrielle at that moment. It is incredibly well-thought-out. 'Illusia’ is not a place or a land as such. It’s a state of consciousness. Xena and Gabrielle are not really there. They’re washed away in the sea somewhere while, in their minds, all this is going on for and to them. They are merely dreaming it. Often in episodes of the show, characters are able to get to other characters through their dreams. Through dreamscape passages, like in 'Dreamworker’ where Xena had to get to Gabrielle. The character that’s doing this to Xena and Gabrielle in 'The Bitter Suite’ is Solan, who’s card imagery representation in 'Illusia’ is 'The Sun’. He controls all that is going on with them. His intention is to get them back together again. To reconcile their differences. To help them understand that their love cannot be destroyed, it can only get distorted through hate, anger and pain. Through 'Illusia’, he is able to help them forgive each other. Forgiveness is the key to making it out of there. I’m not going to explain what cards the other characters, like Callisto, Joxer and Ares, represent in the 'Rider-Waite’ deck. I just want to explain Xena and Gabrielle because that’s the most important thing to pay attention to as their imagery changes all throughout the stages they go through and I want you to know the significance of those changes. To start off with Xena is 'The High Priestess’ and Gabrielle is 'The Empress’. Later Xena is 'The Queen of Swords’ and Gabrielle is 'The Queen of Pentacles’. When Xena and Gabrielle face off, they both become Death but Gabrielle’s outfit does not change until they enter the stage of “The Hall of Echos’ which represents the card of 'The Tower’. Here Gabrielle becomes 'Temperance’ and Xena’s outfit only changes when they get thrown into the next stage and they get tied up to their respective "torments’. That being of Xena’s crucifixion and Gabrielle’s raping. Here Gabrielle gets her signature outfit back while Xena dons a worn-out purple shift. I don’t know what cards these are supposed to represent but it seems like Xena’s just wallowing in her guilt and self-contempt while Gabrielle feels strength and vitality. There is also the card of 'The Lovers’ which represents the both of them struggling to hold their relationship and having to make choices they don’t want to out of ignorance and stubbornness. Again, all this is to show them that they will always love each other and nothing could ever change that. Not even themselves. It’s a incredibly creative and artistic episode. Look up the meanings for each card and character for yourselves.

Girl4Music

I always loved that moment at the end of ‘The Bitter Suite’ where Xena and Gabrielle find themselves in each other’s arms after the whole ‘Illusia’ trip and Gabrielle just says “We’re home” and Xena says “at last” and all the while they’re staring into each other’s eyes and smiling. They definitely do not mean Greece.

HiCo

Just watched your reaction for the second time tonight. It's episodes like this that make me love television of this era so much. The boldness to do something so experimental is incredible. Not only is it a roller coaster ride going from one episode to another but during this episode too. After last episode and this no wonder you were crying at the end Hunter.

Jane Wells

I know right!? Just to deal with the messed up first part of the episode I've come up with my own explanation and it's that it was all happening in their minds as part of the purification ritual they both went through. I think the Amazons gave them intense drugs that were part of this trippy experience- this is what I choose to believe. =D

Jane Wells

Also, same on the excitement for One Against an Army!! One of my absolute favorites!

Jane Wells

Yeah totally! They really got down to those more vulnerable emotions and out of the criticize- defend dynamic.
