So here's my question...

In the 'Nick and Charlie' novella, the headteacher is called Mr Shannon. In the Heartstopper TV show, the headteacher is called Mr Barnes.

Who shall I name this guy? 😂

Didnt have to work up to it, the headteacher did it for him XD I'd say name him like in the novella. The show has changed names (like henry/jack) so it's not as weird if the name is different there. But weirder if the same character doesnt have the same name between the novella and the comic Also, when you create a new character like that, do you do like tests and sketches beforehand to try to establish what their design will be ?

LET'S GOOOOOOO CHARLIE HEADBOY!!!!! This decision of making him the headboy is honestly one of the things I love the most about this story. To me, Heartstopper has always been about breaking stereotypes and facing obstacles, but with a light and fun twist. So seeing the "rise and fall" of an introvert that used to be bullied and seeing him become headboy and making school a much safer space for everyone is really a beautiful thing

Love the sense of movement of the paper between the 2nd and 3rd panel and how it signifies Charlie's life will change but Charlie remains frozen except for the movement of his eyes. He is in control of making some decisions for his life but cannot control everything...and that's ok - just look at his outstanding support system by his side.

The boys’ wide eyes! Having read/watched both, Barnes was the name I remembered and thought of before reading your caption today, so… that would be my vote! Or a hyphenation situation. (And reading other comments, this is maybe a controversial take, but in my brain at least the Heartstopper comic and TV show feel more closely tied than the Heartstopper comic and Solitaire novellas!)

Throughout history the old meaning for Shannon and Barnes have links to the river with Shannon being one of the longest and barns being grain houses on the River. Additionally, residents in the barns were given the surname “Barnes”, So if you are changing the headteachers name, why not go with Mr Rivers

American person here - I have a question about how the head boy position works. Reading N&C, I assumed that Charlie was head boy for the entire year. Based on today’s panel, it seems like the position won’t be elected until part way through the year. Is there not a current head boy when the school year starts? If Charlie becomes head boy later in the year, does the position carry over into year 13? Perhaps there is a year 12 elected each year later in the year who stays head boy through year 13 & then works in tandem with the year 12 head boy? UK people - please help!

I remember in Radio Silence being a little confused when Francis was Head Girl at the end of the school year and then still Head Girl at the beginning of the next one, but apparently that’s a thing?

There is nothing more intimidating than having your Head Teacher READ YOUR APPLICATION right in front of you and your friends (Aled’s face says it all!), BUT, there is also nothing more validating than having that same teacher smile with positive feedback, encouragement, and even a twinge of excitement after reading your carefully curated words! Charlie’s hopeful demeanor in the last panel is everything…we get this beautiful image of CHARLIE, being affirmed for being the capable person he IS, including all the obstacles he’s faced, the decisions he made, the growth he has done, the dreams he has made, the thoughts he has shared, and the change he has planned. Such a shining brief yet deeply meaningful moment in the corridor surrounded by your friends❤️
