This page and the emotions it’s bringing up in us all - pride, admiration, inspiration, love, acceptance, cheerleading vibes (can’t think of the appropriate emotion for that! 😂) This is another reminder for me of why I fell in love with Heartstopper in the first place 😍 I’m old enough to be these students’ grandmother (only just!) and yet I’ve been so inspired, and moved, by the courage of this amazing group of friends, their love and acceptance of each other and how they stand up for each other in front of others ❤️ Nick Nelson really is my life hero now… ‘I like my life, I like who I am’ - I’m so thankful to Alice for creating this knowing the profound impact HS can and has had on peoples lives starting for a young age, to be their authentic selves. If only I had this to inspire me when I was younger. But no regrets - I’ve found it now and I’m happier and more myself than I’ve ever been. Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️

I love that when Charlie looks out into the audience, he doesn’t look at Nick, Tao, Aled or the rest of his friends. He knows he is talking to those peers who may or may not have judged him, talked about him, joined in on bullying him (actively or passively). He is looking them in the eyes, calmly holding onto the podium, and sharing his authentic truths. He’s gone from surviving awful whispers and hurtful jokes in the corridor, from facing inappropriate homophobic questions meant to ridicule him, to now claiming full control, “I am one of the only openly gay guys at this school.”🥹❤️‍🩹 I think I’ll sit on this page for awhile😭

This is the moment where all of Charlie’s pain, struggle, hard work, healing, and self-discovery come into play. It’s like the launch pad for Adult Charlie. Nick was right when he said that Charlie knows who he is and what he wants. And he’s been through more than some of these privileged teens in the audience could ever imagine. He sees how he can use his experiences to help make things better for those who are facing similar paths. And now he’s built up the strength to act on it. Kick some ass, Charlie!

❤️ yes it really does feel like a big moment. What an awesome role model Charlie is - for all people, of all ages, and all walks of life, regardless of gender or sexuality. Such important messages for the whole world - Alice deserves some sort of Nobel prize. Truly.

Simply marvelous! Charlie starts right off with his superpower. Not only is he one of the only openly gay students at Truham, just by standing in front of them now, he is showing his classmates (and the world) he is by far the bravest and most fierce of all. If someone had told me 4 months ago that at the age of almost 40 I would start reading comics and literally fall in love with this story, I would have started laughing hysterically. A big bookworm, reading crime stories and historical novels. After watching the series, I bought all of Alice's books (in electronic versions because waiting for 3 days for delivery seemed like a waste of time) and I read them during the week, often staying up all night. So I understand you perfectly.

(One tiny nitpick - I think one of the boys in the second panel may be missing a neck! The kid sleeping is so real though, hopefully Charlie’s killer speech wakes him up!)

considering that most (if not all?) of them are wearing grammar school ties, i think most of them are younger students who were not yet truham students when the bullying took place more likely, they've heard about what happened from other sources, which makes me think that charlie is about to assure them that he will try to make truham safer for the new students (aka his audience) and that is so sweet!

Thank you for saying that. I so totally agree. I've sort of fallen for these two and am almost obsessed by them (I AM old enough to be their grand parent). By watching HS I've learned and accepted so much about myself. I could not for various reasons be myself years ago but what is worse is that I have no-one I can talk to about it now. I think the biggest thing is that I have learned there are lots of different sexualities.

I hear you - I too have learnt so much since discovering Heartstopper about all the different sexualities (I’ve done a lot of Nick Nelsonesque research) and now I understand myself, and other people, much better. I thought I was very open-minded before and very aware but HS really has helped educate me. Life is starting to make more sense. And I can only imagine that it’s the same for many other people in this community. Like you, I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it completely openly with - just one friend who I don’t see too often but I know she understands (and loves HS too). So being part of this community is amazing 😍 You hit the nail on the head - I have also fallen for Nick & Charlie big time. They are without doubt my favourite love story. And at my age I’ve read and watched quite a few! I have watched S1 and S2 too many times to count, and too many times to tell my family for fear of them thinking I’m irrationally obsessed! But I absolutely don’t feel irrational - quite the opposite. And I think I speak for many people here. - I feel more normal and more alive, more honest, and more authentically me since discovering Heartstopper. It teaches acceptance of humans in every and any ‘form’ and what love truly is. I’ve said it before but the purpose and reach of Alice’s work is profound. We are so grateful! I am starting to sound like a broken record now and have totally gone off topic and not talking about Charlie’s speech anymore, and this is getting reeeeeally long - sorry! - so I’ll shut up now (and get off my phone) but I honestly could talk about Heartstopper all day 😆 It’s so important to me.
