Charlie is so strong! He has come incredibly far! So very proud of him. Alice, these last few pages are beyond amazing. So powerful for the younger students to hear Charlie's story & to be given hope for the future!

Abigail Sheetz

oh charlie spring you are so special to me

Jo Mary

Love it so much Alice x

Jennifer Paddock

Oh his ghosts always get me but he's speaking up and speaking out!! 🥹❤️❤️❤️

Nikki

I am HERE FOR this grown up, strong-minded-yet-still-vulnerable, increasingly confident Charlie. He’s even looking so much more grown up too. Adore how Charlie is the light in the world of the bullies in the bottom panel ✨

Katy Boelter-Dimock

I love how you drew Tao’s face, reliving those times along with Charlie, and Charlie’s face moving from memory to determination. The closeup on Tao & Aled is so cinematic-awesome page!

boombroadcast

I feel like Charlie’s growing more confident as he gets into it. And Tao. 🥺 He must be feeling some old heartache mixed with pride right now! Your shadowy faceless bully illustrations are so evocative, I can really feel the dark, oppressive energy.

emily

The love I have for Charlie is astronomical. Ugh I just wanna give him the biggest hug 🥹

👏👏👏

Joni

Yeah, Charlie, tell it how is! LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK! He said what he said! 🎉🎉💪🏻

Beam Bugge

you're so smart charlie! also tao looks so worried :( but it's okay charlie is happier now, and he will make sure that other students are happy and safe too! i wonder how aled feels rn, we know from radio silence that he was scared of coming out because of how charlie was treated

ama

alice, charlie's speech is so damn good already. the things he says, but also the way you draw these pages?? I had to sit down and stare into the void for a few minutes after the past two updates lol. the panels, the angles, the colouring/shadowing, his posture and emotions, it's all so well drawn and makes his speech even more impactful. 🫶

Lauri

😭😭😭😭 that’s my boy. The bullying is such an important topic.

Jay

I can imagine the complete silence in the room while he is talking about it. Like someone could drop a pencil and everyone would hear it hit the floor. So proud of him 🥺

ally

you can say that again !!!

Beth Yoshida

Yes Charlie! Don't let them keep ignoring it!

mikecamer

cut to Harry shriveling in his chair

Diana N

Those evil laughing faces are so horrible. In the show they’re like demons attacking our Char. His speech shows strength and hope and that he can and will be the one to make a difference and change the atmosphere. He’s come so far and is so strong now. I’m so happy to see him telling his story. I can’t wait to read the rest of his speech. These pages have been so wonderful ❤️

Beam Bugge

also it's really cool how far he's come, from the boy who "hates being honest" to openly telling everyone about his tragic past, he's so brave! therapy probably helped a lot

Embla Nyhlin

“But I wasn’t the problem” the growth!!! Oh Charlie we love you.

Desi23

Dark memories in a powerful Charlie Spring! We love you Charlie!!!!

Christie

Go Charlie 💜

Molly Goat

Tao's face 🥺 GO CHARLIE!!! 🥺❤️✨

Anna Varela

I feel this page so personal, like Charlie I was bullied at school, (I was bullied for my appearance) I was 10-11 years old, and this is so true, why do 11-12 year olds do things or make comments to see people cry and make them apart, and adults just say don't mind them, they are kids and they are immature, our society was and is wrong about bullying. Charlie I love you very much

Cody

Words are your power. Make them hear you, Charlie! The build up we've got here is going to be amazing 😍

aniatka

I have this feeling that Charlie's speech should reach every kid in every school, in every country. I'm sure it will have the power to heal. It will give strength and hope. Also to the older, adults who still carry their memories buried deep inside them. Oh Alice, you are a miracle 🤗🩷

Claire

The drawing of the sinister figures in the last picture is so effective. The heartbreaking thing is how true it is -- so many humans do expend so much energy on making others (and their own) lives hell. 🥺 Be the change you want to see. ❤️ Go Charlie. ❤️

Ada Suzany

SPILL IT ALL IN THEIR FACE CHARLIIIEEE WOOOOOOW

Hannah Neff

Watching Charlie grow as a character in terms of his self worth and bravery is incredible

CinD

Stand Tall Show Them All 🥹

ZooKeeperHere

From thinking he’s a burden just for existing, to knowing he’s not the problem ❤️💪 what a privilege to watch this journey!!

RO

I love that you included Tao in this page 💕

Ariel

YES CHARLIE so much character development🥺💕

Carrie Lindley

"People are making each other's lives hell for no reason." That hits close to home. My daughter spearheaded a project called "Free to Read" to fight book bans in our school district. While she's received plenty of accolades and encouragement (and donations of over 2,000 books), she's also been bullied online, particularly by a group of old women and men. At the age of 17, she was nicknamed a "porn princess" for fighting to maintain community access to books by LGBTQ+ and minority authors. Adult bullies used a cropped photo of her chest as their hate group's Facebook wallpaper. Kids learn the culture of bullying from their grandparents and parents. And while schools (and building a culture of inclusivity in schools, as I know Charlie wants to do) can definitely play a role, adults need to be held to a higher standard, too. I have high hopes for when our current young people grow up and have more power at the ballot box, and everywhere else.

Merel

I love Charlie so much

Hanna Flick

Way to go Charlie 😭🥹

Ashley Robinson

Charlie spitting facts not only existing in schools, but in society as a whole.

Merel

I love how much light Charlie emits in the last panel. The bullies are still there, but their darkness is not able to get to him as much anymore, while before it used to engulf him.

Ashley Robinson

I love you free Charlie in the light amount the darkness in the last panel. Again this story is going to save lives.

2catlovers

I hope we see some apologies from certain people…

Suse

That’s outrageous! I’m so sorry your daughter has had to deal with that.

Murgy

The sad truth is, this is still far too true in schools even today. But hopefully it will get better. And is Charlie a light in the darkness, or is that more Charlie being able to look back at it without the trauma bringing him down?

2catlovers

This is SO powerful. I can just hear Joe delivering this like a Shakespeare St Crispin’s Day speech, and the huge power & impact that could have culturally! ❤️❤️ Robyn

Dippity_Dip

Return of the ghost bully jelly line guys omg

Justin S.

You tell em, Char! ❤️

Shanie_MC

Charlie, dropping truth bombs in a toxic environment. Love to see him owning that HE is not the problem and placing the blame where it belongs. Shows how much internal progress he's made!

ucfnurse

Good job Charlie!!!☺️😊👏👥✨💜❤️💕🌹🎯🎊✌️🕊️☮️

Loveislove

Wow - there must be a bunch of students shriveled up in their seats and a bunch of teachers who don't know where to look. Speaking as a teacher myself, we know who the bullies are and if Charlie says there is a culture problem at the school, time to get rid of the headmaster and promote Mr. Farouk or Ms. Singh.

Beam Bugge

wtf that's so messed up, the fact that grown adults would do that to a teenager???? i'm so sorry that happened to her!

Carly Louise

I love how the bullies are disintegrating. They hold less power over Charlie now 💙

RCM

Sending love and cheers and also profound condolences for all your daughter has been through. She is already a bad ass who has a heart to make a difference❤️ Sadly, bullies are awful enough, but adults bullying kids is despicable, atrocious, terrifying, and disgusting(there really is no right word!!). Please tell her THANK YOU for what she has done to protect the freedom to read (especially diverse and inclusive books), and remind her that there are thousands of people positively supporting her advocacy work and we have her back! She is already changing the world (and if those assholes get worse, let us know and we can all flood her site with grateful and kind comments!) I cannot wait for her generation to be able to vote. They are our hope❤️🌈

Beam Bugge

well he said that most of the bullies were older students so a lot of them have probably graduated by now (or, being in sixth form, have moved to other schools) there may be a couple left though! at least harry gave an apology (however half hearted it was)

Robert

That certainly merits a huge wow. It cuts to the very heart of the problems that have existed. I wonder what the Head felt when he read it.

Scott Whittall

Knew this was going to be impactful. Seeking power from the pain, Charlie. Spread light to make the world a better place from the darkness you have walked through. Thank you, Alice. Charlie's emotional words will reverberate around the world.

Beam Bugge

reading lgbt books does not harm children, but this group of old people surely do...

Robert

It sort of supports the conversation between Nick and Tao before the Prom where they both acknowledge and understand how badly the bullying affected Charlie and how much pain he still carries and may well for the rest of his life. Absolutely brilliant Alice. I hope you have time to read these comments.

Carrie Lindley

Even Charlie standing at the podium reminds me of my kid -- she's taken the podium to face off against adult bullies on the Board of Supervisors, and then (in a happier but no less intimidating context) to thank librarians at the ALA Annual Conference. So I know first hand the strength it takes for a young person to stand tall and show them all. Here's a little bit more of her story, if anyone is interested: https://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/story/virginia-girl-scout-Kate-Lindley-Discusses-Her-Year-of-Activism-Importance-Fighting-Book-Bans-ALA-Annual

Elspeth Fougere

I'm so curious to see how this next part unfolds, because I think most people recognise and appreciate honesty and integrity and want to generally respect other people and be respected, but its also this instinct to get along and go along that makes most people at riak of being swayed into silence and enabling bullies in the first place. I had a really terrible experience of workplace bullying which made me realise that sometimes no matter how obvious a sociopath is, if middle management or senior management are neglecting to create a strong leadership of safety, respect for diversity, and room for people to be authentic and all be appreciated as having skills and part of a team, any truth tellers will just be picked on, and set up in really complex ways where people are played off against each other and games are set up so people fail and interrupt each others abilities, all for the satisfaction of the "Bens" and the "Harry's" of this world. It's such a waste. I'd love to see how Charlie really impacts change, because what is also true is that sometimes it just takes one person to speak out, and suddenly there is a ripple effect of other people being bold enough to step up and say something or not participate in the enabling of others unkindnesses. Schools are legally required to proved safe places for students to learn, so I hope it's simple that Charlie is properly supported, and it becomes easy for the rest of the students to report bullying, stand up to. bullying and stop others being mean. It's so easy once the ripple effect gets started. I'd love for kids world wide to see that role modelled, how life doesn't have to be mean, and can be safe and easy for everyone ❤️

Idaemilie

Charlie what are you made of 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you never stop pushing yourself🩵 So proud. It’s not for free, doing something like that! So be proud of your self Charlie. I’m on team Char ! ! ! The drowning of his face are so perfect 🩵💙

Laura Humber

Charlie is so brave to stand up and share some of his darkest moments in front of the whole school. It takes a lot to be vulnerable and let people in. Now he is truly showing what an amazing person he his to do all that to make the school better for others. There may be dark all around him in these panels but Charlie is shining through as a light against it. Alice I love this 🥹❤️

Nick Jones

As we say here in the Southern US when someone is taking it to the people responsible, "GIVE 'EM HELL, CHARLIE!'

S

I love how Charlie is illuminated and surrounded by light in the last panel, while the bullies’s darkness isn’t getting to him 🥺❤️

RCM

The one thing that hit me the hardest here is the CALMNESS that we sense in and around Charlie. That second panel of him speaking TRUTHS is drawn so delicately (to me!) to project this confidence and Charlie's firm grounding in his beliefs and himself...his speech doesn't feel pressured (no caps, no exclamations...just proper grammar reflecting that facts are being shared), his eyes are neither dilated nor pinpoint (they are just focused!) and his chin is neither raised nor lowered down (so no obvious signs that could show anxiety or fear). His posture is straight, his head is set with conviction, but also with softness for others who have been bullied...it's all these little details that add up to project the validity of owning his story, the bullshit that bullying was/is, and his desire for change. I also love how this is sandwiched between what feels like a sad, remorseful Tao who has recognized what Charlie went through while also understanding that even as Charlie's bff, he only got part of what Charlie experienced, and that ...and that last panel, dang! All of the faceless, laughing bullies who hurt Charlie in so many ways, and now, NOW we see them ( and goodness knows he knows there are still there!), but they are dulled, less important than this moment, pushed behind his light and his healing...and to me, this is Charlie winning. He'll always have those memories, but here, in the light he is creating, he is calmly, steadily, confidently, winning (for himself, for younger Charlie, for younger students, for peers, and even for teachers who have suffered bullying as well). I'm so proud.

Lotta HR 🩷

Char u are so strong❤️ im sorry i feel you😔

Audrina

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK, CHARLIE!

Evergreen

Shew, anybody else read this as biting commentary on the state of the world at the moment? Go Alice! Say it!

Katie🐝

What a beautifully well written observation!! I already loved this page but this made me love it even more!!

Katie🐝

That’s our boy!!!!!

Robert

You are probably right. I had it in my mind that he did but looking back there isn't any indication the head did.

Glenn Crawford (GraphiqueJack)

What's sad is even with the examples of Charlie and Nick, and Elle, Tara and Darcy from Higgs, that the bullying is still going on. I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. Can they do a GSA in private/grammar schools in the UK? The culture itself needs to change.

Maisie

YOU TELL EM CHARLIE!!

GWON CHARLIE

Michaela Shake

This is so full circle and beautiful 🥺🥺🥺

I love how we see Tao's face here-Tao was the only one who was friends with Charlie when he was being bullied, tao knows how bad it was

Katia Gómez

Yeah, you tell them 🩷🩷

Elora (EeveeCollectorElora)

The focus on Tao on that panel is such a good reaction - he knows the most about it all having lived it with him, I love that ❤️
