Nick has to relearn to enjoy his hobbies without Charlie always being around. Before he met Charlie, Nick didn't fully know who he was. He has grown so much but it must be difficult to detach that from his boyfriend who's been at his side through it all. It's okay (and important!) to be your own person and not just identify as someone's partner. It will take time and effort and communication, but I know you can get there Nick <3

When I was in high school and started to realize how much I depended on my boyfriend for happiness, part of the problem became my self loathing, because I knew I wasn't suppose to feel that way. I was supposed to be independent! So then I felt left out and lonely sometimes as well as disappointed in myself. I wonder if Nick is feeling all of that or just some of it (probably other things, too, poor Nick!).

I think he’s distracted. Not bad, just thinking about a lot of things, but he does think that he’s useless without Charlie and focusing on that insecurity will only exacerbate it and make him fumble even more (because distraction) which reinforces the idea even more. It’s a bad cycle.

Nick actually admits that to Elle & Darcy on the Uni trip. He doesn't know who he is without Charlie. I think it is also linked to when he finally realises he's bi. He says there is so much he doesn't know about himself.

Oh Nick 🤧🤧 I mean you can understand deeply especially now like Nick's High School days are slowly coming to an end, and yet part of him doesn't want to be away from Charlie for many reasons but one of them being for Charlie's mental health, like if Nick is far away, what if Charlie really needs him there. That's why Nick is kind of holding back because you can tell he really wants and needs to be there for Charlie. But obviously we already know they worked through it but seeing it all coming together within volume 6 really showcases a lot and I believe this volume is going to be longer than volume 4 was

Damn, Alice...you are breaking my heart today (even though I think this is a good thing for Nick to be pushed to think about because he has been avoiding feeling it for so long). The "MISS" panel is drawn in a way that perfectly summarizes where Nick is. Nick's hands are open, as if they are ready and willing to catch the next ball that "life" throws at him, but his face appears kind of blank (like he sees the ball but isn't really focused in on it, as if he is staring past it), showing the emotional disconnect we've been seeing inside him between his ability to accept the reality of the inevitable changes coming his way, and any attempt on his part to process/discuss the anxiety it brings. His 'going through the motions' m.o. is catching up to him. And goodness, the last two panels with the the 'ha ha shut up' veiled attempt to cover up the "what am i going to do without Charlie" fear and sadness look is just so heavy...CHANGE SUCKS...and to be fair, Nick and Charlie are sitting on top of their Truham world right now. Everything is finally SO amazing...but it has a deadline to it, and a deadline that Nick feels more than Charlie since he is a year ahead. I get it Nick, it's a terrible, scary feeling...and one that makes you long to cling to the present, but in Nick's present world, things have changed with Charlie becoming Head Boy and quitting rugby, so even the present time feels "off," and that is what we see in the last panel today. (Somebody give Nick a Nick Nelson hug and remind him he doesn't have to go at this alone, nudge, nudge🥺)

I love that you point out that his main struggle is not only due to time away from Charlie but the anxiety involved with inevitable change. Honestly it makes sense that Nick hasn’t talked to Charlie yet. If he voices that he feels insecure, or having a bit of an identity crisis, he wouldn’t want Charlie to think it’s a result of HIS growth. Nick doesn’t really know exactly what it is or how to approach it. At first I was surprised that Charlie didn’t broach the topic of these mood changes w Nick himself but then I realized that these shifts in Nick’s expression and body language are meant to be so slight that they are imperceptible to everyone but the reader, but I think Charlie is finally catching on.

Nick has god level skills at hiding his true feelings 😢. He's spent his whole life doing it. I think this is a really, really, REALLY, important storyline. Sometimes those close of us are going through stuff we don't realise sometimes for a long time. And they cloak so well for so long we miss it. Even the best of us (and Charlie, the Paris Squad and even Queen Sarah Nelson herself are definitely the best of us!) can miss it and this is a really important lesson. Those little hints (much bigger and more obvious to us Patreon readers than the characters) are so important and so easy to miss.

I wish we knew why Charlie looked up at Nick...in November. Is he noticing something in Nick's moods, feeling interrupted by him or that he is too clingy? I know Alice doesn't want to be tied down by the Nick and Charlie novella but it's hard to see how our boys roles basically get reversed in the space of a few more months.

My theory is that part of the reason things turn out the way they do in the Novella is because sometime between now and then, Charlie must have done a really good job of convincing Nick that everything's going to be okay, their relationship will be solid and that University is a really positive thing for Nick. The place where he can grow and become his real self. Nick's excitement about going is a direct result of Charlie selling it to him and really supporting the idea. But by doing this, Charlie causes Nick to think Charlie doesn't have any doubts of his own — hence events unfolding the way they do.

Great thinking! Jeez - Tara is going to change her mind about them being good communicators lol. I guess it all comes out of a place of love for the other. Charlie is probably too engrossed and distracted by his head boy activities now but that will change once the school year draws to a close and his position ends. Nick is more immediately dealing with the impending move.

Agree. I suspect Nick’s got a lot of buried hurt from his parents’ divorce, lack of interest from his father, and a lot of masking. Masking is super exhausting. Even “the rugby king” is a part he’s played. I don’t think Nick’s EVER been just himself, by himself. He’s been defined by his masks and now they’re slipping & he doesn’t know who he really is. Been there and it’s AWFUL.
