Yay - love to see Coach Singh and her spider sense tingling. Boo - Nick's fake smiling. Yep - I sense that personal statement will be Nick's turning point out of this emotional state he is stuck in.

tilly❤️🍂

aw i love how much she cares for her students!!! xx

ACxo

I love Coach Singh so much

Loveislove

Nick might also reignite his interest in rugby and joining the Leeds team and step up his training throughout the remainder of the school year. Coach Singh can be a help with that.

Katie H

I really hope Nick opens up to someone soon about how he's feeling 🙏

Chloe ♡

oh nick back again with the ‘im fine’ 💔

Bryn

is nick insanely tall or is coach singh tiny

Brittney

Oh Nick, you can tell even if it's just little things you can something's off, also I love how supportive all these teachers are

Krystyn

Nick really needs someone to talk to 🥺

Adriane Tanjutco

ah it’s tough to write a personal statement if you feel like your whole self identity is tied to another person.

Kayleigh Clarke

I really hope Nick talks to someone- anyone!- soon. He seems so sad around the edges! So many people care about him he just needs to reach out to one of them ❤️

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

I love that she cares about Nick and checks in with him. I really wanna see how Nick thinks about his future and what might get him to seriously think about playing rugby post uni

Ann-Marie Still

Here it comes 😢 our Nicky needs some tlc

Merel

I'm glad Nick has adults in his life that he trusts and can talk to. Of course he can talk to Charlie, but it's important that he doesn't become entirely reliant on his boyfriend. It's much healthier for both him and their relationship if he opens up to other people as well.

Elora (EeveeCollectorElora)

Nicks awkward fake smile here just is so wonderfully done, he’s really not hiding it well now 💔

jearle

Form an orderly queue to give a glowing personal reference

Justin S.

Good that other folks are noticing his mood ❤️

Carrie Lindley

“Just need to finish my personal statement”… he hasn’t even started it yet, right? Avoiding that introspection for as long as possible!

Nikki

Ah Coach Singh could be a brilliant person for him to open up to 🫶 Also, just how fricking tall is he?

jearle

Having grown up under Section 28, I can't tell you what I'd give to have teachers that could be so openly supportive

Charlie

Mrs Singh knows something’s up. She’d be a great person to help him open up. 🫂

Maisie

Ohhh Nick :( I’m glad his mood is being noticed by other people

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

Maybe that's what has Nick 🥺😭 overwhelmed or it's also the fact that he's getting closer and closer to leaving Charlie's side🥺😔

Charlie

Slumped shoulders hands in pockets. Non of it is helping you be invisible Nick. Own it! You’re amazing. 🥰

Oliver

HES SO TALL???

Claire

Lovely to see Coach Singh. Since Nick is feeling quite a lot of self doubt right now - that he is trying very hard to mask - writing that personal statement will be a bit of a challenge.

beck

alice i’m loving the layout of the panels in these recent pages!!!!! so creatively pleasing and still different each time is why your mind is so big

Sulagna Maitra

Coach Singh to the rescue I hope!! She "sees" Nick!! She became one of my favourite characters on the TV series the moment she said to Nick, " now I don't want to make any assumptions but I assume this has something to do with it" (S2E3) 😆😆 I speak like that sometimes and with that one dialogue Coach Singh helped me get rid of me reliving and cringing those moments over and over again!! ❤️🥲

Margot Masclans

I’m so happy to have a Nick focused arc ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Marie

My baby😭 Nick Nelson needs his own Nick Nelson🤍

JP42

I know we’ve all said this before — but I continue to be amazed by Alice’s ability to express emotions with these deceptively very simple faces. I always look back after reading it to ponder how long it took to figure out which lines were needed to communicate worry in the eyes or false joy versus genuine.

Lainey

coach singh🥺🥺🫶

ucfnurse

Such a tough decision for Nick!!!☺️😊😯🥰👍🔆🌛💞💓🌷🏉☕️🥯✌️🕊️☮️

JP42

Also, Coach is the perfect support for him right now. I remember the moment a teacher told me that I should go to college. I rode that high of her belief in me for a very long time. He needs an adult to help him process his essay material.

James LEE

We all love Kit and Joe now as perfect castings, but I remember at the start, Kit often commented that he was not physically up to par compared to the way Nick is described in the comics. He mentioned it as a motivation for why he decided to start working out and building up.

Kassie K Wilson

Love a teacher who recognizes and doesn’t ignore when students aren’t acting like themselves 🥹

Lolli98

Nick's fake smile is starting to hurt me. Fortunately there are people who can see behind it.

Ellen🌈✨

Coach Singh’s messy bun is so good I’m jealous of a drawing, brilliant artistry as always Alice 👏👏

Murgy

It's good to see that there is someone checking on him. Coach Singh might be a good person for Nick to talk to if Charlie, friends or family prove too hard

Ashlett

She’s so tiny next to him😅

Scott Whittall

We are all so concerned with Nick's support group and who exactly he can confide in with his inner struggles. Nick turned to Tara and Darci about his initial relationship with Charlie and coming out, Elle and Tara (reluctantly) regarding his and Charlie's sex life, Nick's heartfelt plea to his Mom about Char's mental health, Tao about Charlie's ability to discuss the bullying, and now, here is the perfect adult role model in Coach Singh who sees Nick completely and who can perfectly understand the complexity of Nick's concerns about Uni, leaving Charlie, and who he is without Char constantly by his side. Absolutely adore Coach Singh's character. She represents all of the wisdom, foresight, and empathy, Nick needs at this moment in his life. ❤️

Beam Bugge

in the past it has helped when "Charlie was there, holding his hand", and I'm sure Charlie would love to do so again! but unfortunately he's not a mind reader, so nick will have to open up about his struggles

Beam Bugge

oof, uni applications, another thing to worry about!

Loveislove

I think it shows what a lovely person Nick is that all these people genuinely care about him. He just needs to see it himself and allow that vulnerability.

Loveislove

It will be interesting to see what factors impact Nick's interpretation of his current struggles vs what Charlie went through. Charlie's parents both love him although Jane has mental health struggles of her own. He also has 2 siblings who adore him. I think these factors plus his friend group, relationship with Nick and own inherent confidence and kindness helped his own growth immensely. Nick is missing the core stability of a father and sibling support. Sarah is awesome but I don't think she has always handled the conflict between the brothers well. Nick is beginning to choose true friends and obviously a soul mate. But he has spent many years with walls up and being vulnerable costs. I hope he learns soon how amazing he is so he doesn't have to feel so dependent upon Charlie and can begin to experience his own growth.

Robert

If I remember Coach Singh was a huge support to Charlie when he returned to rugby after his absence (along with Mr Farouk as well). Nick needs to get a grip but, from recent personal experience, finding someone you can trust and also keep your worries between you and them, is difficult (it worked for me though). HS was very much my influence when I started counselling. It made me face myself for who I am .

Katrina

Omg him saying he’s fine when we know he’s not and fake smiling I can’t my heart hurts for him 😭

Jennifer Paddock

Oh, Nick... "I'm fine" is often the biggest lie we ever tell - to others and ourselves. 🫶

RCM

Coach Singh! It has been way too long🫶 (btw, I LOVE that a mostly "boys" school has a female rugby coach...that would never happen where I live and I'm so grateful for this representation, let alone how much I adore her character!). There is something in that second panel that makes me pause and keep circling back to it. Nick seems surprised at Coach Singh's comment, but I can't decide if it is because she noticed he was "a bit low energy" at practice (I mean, those uncomfortable feelings of anxiety feel a lot more real when someone else notices them), or is it because she is taking the time to ask how HE is actually doing. Nick is definitely a kid who could fly under the radar with everyone assuming he is "fine" because externally, he always seems to be. He focuses so much on how others are doing, and we see that familiar deflection from self in his immediate stock response in the next panel, "I'm fine..." (It makes me wonder if he internalized saying "I'm fine" as a young kid, maybe if there was angst at home between his parents or even between Sarah and David, and being an intuitive person, maybe Nick thought his own problems/issues weren't as big as other peoples at the time, so to make things easier for everyone else, said 'I'm really fine...' and then mostly has been....ish). And god, writing a personal statement is SO hard for anyone...so we have our sweet and gentle Nick, who is "fine," looking at an entirely blank page that will determine his entire future (remember back when they were supposed to fill out some bullet points of what their goals were, and Sahar's page was filled and Nick's was totally blank, and he started texting (aka avoiding the task) Charlie during his sex ed class), and now, he is somehow supposed to wittily and succinctly summarize his strengths, his goals, his hopes, and what feels like his entire life story to increase his chances of getting into uni. I know that feeling of pressure and numbness, and it is not a good one...🥺😓

Cody

Nick, you're not fine. C'mon. Wish Coach Singh would have noticed something.

Flor D. la Peña🍂

Nick’s so worried recently, I’m wondering in which point of the story he’s gonna be so chill about it (like at the beginning of the N&C novella) or if maybe Alice it’s gonna change that narrative 👀 I’m so looking forward to seeing it

James

You know what, it's probably a good thing he has to write a personal statement and that there's a deadline for this. Hopefully this will be the catalyst that finally forces him to start to seek help. His teachers and his friends (especially Tara, Elle, Sahar and the rugby lads who will also be writing theirs) will all be asking him about it, so it will be a lot harder to hide he's having trouble with it. And if he's been unable to fully articulate all the different feelings he's been having over the last few months — perhaps even to himself — then being asked to explicitly think of, as you say, his strengths, goals, hopes and story then maybe this will force him to confront on some of the things that are troubling him. And if it becomes obvious that he does needs help, even if it's with this specific task, then I'm sure those around him would be forthcoming with some excellent ideas of what to write. Just like how they rallied around helping Charlie with his campaign.

Leah Della Croce

I feel this in my soul. I've been other people's Nick for most of my life. Now as an adult it's really taking a toll on me

Beth Yoshida

He really needs to talk to someone

James

I guess Sarah is stuck in a bit of a rock and a hard place with David's bullying of Nick. On the one hand she has to protect Nick and I imagine she would do this quite well. But on the other she's still his mother and loves him and feels a responsibility to make him a better person, and cannot disown him. That said I think Nick's probably had the better parenting experience (even if it's just from Sarah alone) whilst Charlie has had the better peer support from Tori, from Tao and later Elle and Aled. Charlie could talk about his crush with them, Nick had nobody to talk to about HIS crush. Now they're his friends too but I guess having these sorts of friends is still a bit new to him.

Sophie

writing personal statements SUCK

Beam Bugge

charlie has had a better support system at school, but he's also faced a lot of cruelty at school, much more than nick has, and that has definitely affected his mental health!

moon

:( nick

Here’s Geoff when we need him

2catlovers

Please excuse my ignorance here, but what is s28? I’m from New Zealand and I’ve never heard that term before.

David C Witkin

I really love how observant and astute you are with this comment. It's a very coherent analysis.

Robert

It was a law brought in by Margaret Thatcher's government stated that "a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship". It was very harmful to lots of youngsters and it was repealed some years ago.

Robert

Let's hope Nick's 'just got to finish my personal statement' is not the same as Charlie's 'nearly done' or 'it's finished' when referring to his Coursework essay!!

James

It was a vile, repugnant and pernicious piece of legislation that came about from what today we would term culture-war politics. During the 1980s, tabloid newspapers (which had daily circulations in the millions pre-internet) were still overtly homophobic. And I mean OVERTLY — homophonic slurs would be printed in large text on front page headlines. In particular, but by no means exclusively, those such as The Sun owned by Rupert Murdoch, a personal friend of Thatcher's. A minority of forward-thinking Labour-run councils, mainly in London and other big cities, had begun to teach about same sex relationships in a positive and age-appropriate way (although elsewhere and at a national level the Labour Party also had its fair share of homophobic views, so we're talking a few pioneers doing their own thing. This was when the term 'loony left' was also coined by the same newspapers for these individuals) This was leapt upon by the tabloids with the behind-the-scenes support of the government in what became a major, targeted hate campaign (which naturally spread plenty of falsehoods and misinformation over what this relatively small number of schools were doing as well as about LGBT+ people in general) It was a time when many working class people — who would have traditionally been Labour voters — still held homophobic attitudes. It was also the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. For Thatcher and Murdoch this was a means to win these voters over, and was used as a line of attack during the 1987 election. Having been re-elected, she had this law passed in 1988. It wouldn't be finally repealed until 2003 (2000 in Scotland). Perhaps one of the worst aspects of the legislation was that its vagueness left many teachers unsure as to precisely what they could or couldn't talk about resulting in often unnecessary self-imposed censorship throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium. It also meant situations where teachers refused to help LGBT+ students approaching them for help. Like I said, vile and pernicious. The legacy lived on. Whole generations of teachers had absolutely no training of LGBT+ topics and no doubt many still felt afraid to discuss it years later. More broadly the homophobic hate campaign set the wider cause of gay rights back many years. Some sources say 1987 was when homophobic attitudes amongst the public were at their peak, having risen since the 1970s as a result. section 28 is therefore also seem as symbolic of that. Wooow sorry, that was a massive reply. But it's important history to know, I guess. Bringing it all back on topic, I would imagine many of the older teacher at Higgs and Truman would have been heavily influenced by Section 28 and kept their fear of discussing LGBT topics. Kent County Council also tried to maintain a 'local section 28' for some years after 2003 which survived until 2010 when the Equalities Act finally rendered it illegal.

Robert

In the book, Ms Singh did say Nick had the potential to play after school.

John Deuel

I also imagine that drawing a person who is pulling off their shirt isn’t that easy. I’d be terribly intimidated by trying to get the arms, shoulders, elbows all drawn in a way that didn’t look completely inhuman. Props to you, Alice!

Juliette

I love coach Singh so much ! ❤️

Neenie

Coach Singh does her best but Nick just refuses to open up. I’m glad Charlie could talk more honestly with Mr. Ajayi
