Harriet Echo

What a beautiful name for a cafe! I could just do with an oat latte served to me by an adorable blue eyed barista! 🥹🥹🥹☔️☔️☔️ but also… poor Nicky I just want him to be ok 🥺🥺🥺

Merel

'the rainy day' what a cute name for the cafe!! is it inspired by a real life favourite of yours?

Martine Scarabea

I need to come over for a cup of coffee... 🥹

Olav Gehle

He got it how lonely Nick is feels and you can see he is worried about it. But they will sort it out.🧡

Caroline

I do like Charlie’s boundaries but also, Nick is missing Charlie so much! How is he going to manage uni??? I bet he’s thinking about that, too…

Charlie

It’s so rainy today Alice!!! I love that the cafe is called that, it’s just brilliant! And Yes Charlie, see through his happy text. We all know you know something’s up. x

Katie H

The cafe that Charlie works in looks so good 😍 now Charlie can tell that something is bothering Nick, I hope they talk about it soon 🥹

Aww Charlie and hold up? Did I miss a part when did Charlie get a job? But still go over there Charlie he needs you!

This miscommunication is killing me :(

Desi23

Omg barista Charlie! So proud of him! I really love all the details in this page!😍😍😍

Ania W.

Alisha Buchanan

Oh! I didn’t know what job Charlie had! 💙💛

kenzie !

CUTIE PATOOTIE

Maisie

Noooo talk to him Charlie don’t delete the message :(((

EllieRLM

BARISTA CHARLIE !

Hannah Moseley

He looks so cute in his apron! 🥺🥰

Merel

I'm conflicted about Charlie deleting the text. On the one hand our boys need to finally talk to each other, and it's not helping that they're seeing each other less now. On the other hand it's nice to see Charlie put himself first and not immediately drop everything to go be with Nick. Boyfriend time is important, but so is having your own hobbies and career etc.

BEL

Make sure you go see him after your shift, Charlie. He needs you…

Victoria Panaro

And here we are.... getting close to N&C's plot 🥺 they have been avoiding the elephant in the kitchen and now the miscommunication is part of their daily routine 😔

aniatka

No, Charlie, please look at Nick and read between the lines 🙏❤️❤️❤️ Alice, I'm going to have a proper full-on heart attack. The most wonderful of writers, please, have mercy on us 🤭🤗❤️

Barb

this bold "delete"😭 is causing sth in my heart...

Chloe ♡

charlie should have went round and taken some left over cookies with him

Diana N

I just yelled out loud, come on Charlie wake up!! Alice please I cannot take this torture of Charlie ignoring that something isn’t right with Nick. That glance in the kitchen the other day made me think they were going to talk about it. I’m so happy we’re getting season 3 so soon because they will be at their closest and here they are so far apart. I can always tell with one look if something is wrong with my girlfriend. If she says I’m fine or don’t worry then that’s a huge red flag. I’m trusting you Alice but these last few pages are killing me.

KimS

I feel like this is good in a way because Charlie is putting his needs first (homework, rest, etc) but that means Nick’s are coming second. But I also think Nick needs to muster up the strength to say what he needs to say. That isn’t Charlie’s responsibility, as much as I want Charlie to be able to mind read and make Nick feel better. Hard stuff to navigate at any age, and especially as teens

Thais Di Stasi

Nick and Charlie please communicate your fellings

Blissnfaith

Invite Nick to the cafe, Charlie, and make him a cuppa❤️

Kayleigh Clarke

Omg he looks so cute 🥺 Now. GO TO NICK’S AFTER WORK!! 😅 he senses something is wrong so just do it!!

Katrin

Ohh, how I want to order a coffee right now, but at the same time I dont want to disturb him writing a message to his boyfriend! And than I remember that this is not real life and than I remember season 3 comes out in 2 days and I dont care and than I remember I'm way to exited to drink another cup of coffee today but than I see a new page here!!!!! I freaking love it!!!!! ... I make myself a cup of coffee now. Does anybody want something while I'm at it? ... ☕🍰

Diana N

At his age though it’s not a career and honestly I’m surprised he was allowed to get a job. It will surely affect his grades. It did mine when I was his age.

EllieRLM

Oh god... The "Nick and Charlie novella" vibes are coming our way. One page a day is gonna be torture 🤣

Merel

Hmm yeah. He's always been a good student though, and he's Head Boy now. Idk how many hours he works but I think it will be fine. Might mean even less time with Nick though 😬

Diana N

That’s what I’m really sad and surprised about seeing that they’re going to be apart the next year.

margaux

every second they’re apart an angel loses its wings💔💔💔

Claire

I want to go to The Rainy Day cafe right now! Charlie looks pensive now too. I understand why he deleted his first message. But can the next one be: ❤️ Why don't you come to Rainy Day? I could make you a coffee I would love to see you ❤️

springy

oh he’s so grown up with his job and being head boy, giving speeches and making a difference 😭😭

Evergreen

1. I would totally check out The Rainy Day Cafe if I walked by it, just because of its adorable name! 2. Oooooh my brain can’t decide if it’s wants Charlie to have deleted that text because he plans to surprise Nick with a visit on his way home OR because I hope he has developed the independence to know he really needs to focus on his homework tonight. The first option smooths out potential conflict and acknowledges his loved one’s emotions, which is a beautiful thing couples can do for each other. But the other option could help bring about important conversations, and shows that Charlie is learning how to be a complete person who happens to be in love - as opposed to a person who is only whole when his significant other is around. Nick has voiced that exact issue in himself, and he won’t be able to work on it himself without opportunities like this. 🤔

Krystyn

“The rainy day”, what a lovely name for a cafe 💜 It looks like it’s sort of a rainy mood for Mick and Charlie, so many feelings suppressed 🥺

Nikki

Am I the only one who went, “A Christmas tree!!!” 😂🤣

Scott Whittall

7p is not too late to go hug, kiss and have a heart to heart with your man, Char. Everything will sort out when you two just talk. Go Char.

Evergreen

Either way, the good news is that Charlie has noticed a second red flag now. Whether the conversation is an understanding one or a conflictual one, it’s more likely to happen now. Even if it shows up as conflict, that’s OK. Some of the most important bonding conversations I’ve ever had with my spouse began with conflict.

Oliver

Hes so cute id love to visit his cafe <3333 barista charlie my fav charlie

Loveislove

Look at Charlie's eyes! His text meant - I miss you and want to come over but am trying to show you I will be ok when you go to Leeds. I totally think both Nick and Charlie are protecting each other from the future separation but causing an unnecessary separation in the present.

Annette Callaghan

Oh no! Talk him Charlie. Nick needs your reassurance right now as he can see you’re flying high and he’s getting left behind 🥹

Marie

So… while they are together, Charlie is distracted. He is the head boy, and for some reason, he got a job and now avoids Nick, while Nick is suffering. What is going on? Nick cares about everyone—where are all these people?

Ania W.

Am I the only one who has a feeling that by the end of the shift Charlie will change his mind and go to meet Nick?

Jmejimz

Charlie’s spidey senses are tingling that Nick seems a bit off, but he needs to prioritize his responsibilities too and I’m glad he’s doing that. Ah, the inevitable growing pains that come with navigating the hectic times in life (which they will only encounter more of during the Uni years) they need TO TALK and figure out how best to support each other through these times.

Koko

I don't think he is actively avoiding Nick. He just needs nick to open up on his own, he doesn't want to force nick to open up. Charlie knows something is up. They will talk hopefully

Ania W.

Charlie doesn't avoid Nick. New challenges and responsibilities have simply appeared in his life and he has to make choices. He may not be alert and doesn't pick up on subtle signals, but it's not because of his bad will. Sometimes we neglect our loved ones not for lack of love but because we are simply too busy with other things.

James

The rest of the world gets their first glimpse of Chapter 8 after what must seem like forever. We get our first glimpse of where Charlie's mind is at in what seems like forever 😂

Martina Magnusson

Ooh gosh I kinda hate knowing what we're getting closer to 😭😭😭

Hannah

Most teenagers get a job to get some work experience and money. He doesn’t know nick is sad because they aren’t communicating well.

Marie

If he doesn’t want to force him, how about being there for him at least?

Katrina

Omg yesss barista Charlie!! And Charlie I know you know something is up with Nick so please go talk to him after work he needs you right now 😭😭

Marie

Ok, I get it. Charlie couldn’t do anything wrong. Never mind.

Harry

This is when things are going to bubble up slowly and I am not hyped for that 🥺🥺🥺

HLMac88

I don’t like this no open communication thing. Ugh, I hope they talk soon.

RoseErin Moylan

Surely he's saving up money now so he can visit Nick by train as much as possible once uni starts

ucfnurse

I love the Christmas tree in the coffee shop!!!☺️😊🥰❣️🤗🙌✨🌟🎄☕️⛄️🌲☃️✌️🕊️☮️

Luke

Yeah I’m wondering if he’s finally picking up on the fact that there’s something going on with Nick and can tell he needs some support. They really need to talk, I feel so bad for Nick after these last few pages.

Lauri

Fingers crossed 🤞

MJ

I hate seeing sad Nick 😔 I want to jump ahead to them talking this out - but then I get sad about this being the end of the comic and now I'm spiraling right along with Nick 😅😭

Ariel

Awww loving the Christmas vibe in the coffee shop and Charlie's sweater!!! (But I am worried about where we're going with this 😭🤣🍂)

DD 🍂

All the little details in the cafe look so good!

James

I like your theory the best. It seems to fit. But I'm still not totally clear where we're going (and that's soo exciting — I like that Alice is keeping us in suspense!) Even if he's getting the odd clue here and there, I'm sure that Charlie is oblivious to the extent of Nick's emotional turmoil (I don't think he'd EVER intentionally abandon him if he knew he was in such pain, and we all know what a brilliant masker Nick is..) Is he being a bit more distant and a bit more self reliant on purpose? Is this conscious or subconscious behaviour? Is he doing it to protect himself or gently nudge Nick? Or is this completely unintentional, he's just getting on with his life and hasn't realised the relationship implications? And how is Charlie feeing inside? I feel like we've only really seen him from the outside so far this chapter — and he seems confident, making smart, rational decisions, feeling proud of what he's achieving, being able to take on a part time job. But does he really have no anxieties or fears of his own still? Are thoughts of their future long distance far at the back of his mind or do they still pop up and bother him? Soo many questions. Looking forward to Alice surprising us!

Scotsman

Hm, maybe you can help me. Are they not on their way to becoming the Nick & Charlie couple? If I read the first pages of the novel correctly, the two of them seem quite good, close and comfortable. Currently, we are still before Christmas. So I guess (and hope) that we will see them sort out this situation. And the big fall out will come much later (June?). Am I wrong?

Idaemilie

Yes Charlie need to do his own thing, BUT remember the boyfriend who was there every step of the way when Charlie needed him. This will most likely do them stronger in the end. But until then my heart is crying ❤️

Rhonda Mitchum

Oh Charlie just show up at Nick's ❤️❤️

Robert

He does but going on Nick and Charlie they had a major difficulty talking out their problem primarily because they didn't know what to say (also neither wanted the other to say it was over). I find it difficult to understand why Charlie won't talk to Nick.

Julie

Aw, Charlie knows what's up.

James

The cafe seems so warm and inviting. That feeling of snugness when it's dark and cold and wet outside (the name helps 😅, and the Christmas tree, and the fact we know it's winter so likely dark by 4pm) I can imagine it's the kind of tranquil place you can sit alone and read a book and be safe in your own world. I don't know why, but this seems to fit Charlie's aesthetic really well. Somehow I also see Charlie being a chronic coffee drinker when he gets older. Could this maybe be a metaphor for Charlie finding a new safe space that is his? Not at his parents house or Nick/Sarah's house, away from school. Maybe he wasn't explicitly looking for a job but had an idea he would at some point, then this opportunity came along at random and he took it because it felt 'him'? (Anyway glad you changed it from Topman 😂)

LV Reid

When did Charlie get a job? I must have missed something.

Julie

On an unrelated topic, American education needed here -- (from the first scene released today) If a tank top = a vest, what do you call a sweater (jumper?) with no sleeves? That's what we would call a vest.

Ruby Sinreich

Hard to believe Charlie would have a job where he has to be around food all day. Talk about exposure therapy!

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

charlie working omg no wonder he hasn't been with nick that long 😭🥺😱 and we are going to see them at Christmas together💗🥺❄️☃️

James

No think you're right. I've always looked at the Novella from the point of view that they were in a pretty good place before and a really good place after. Those two weeks or so were a blip in an otherwise growing and maturing relationship as well as two maturing personal journeys. They were always on a positive trajectory. So yes, how Alice takes it from here to the Nick and Charlie couple of the first chapter of the Novella is going to be really interesting and exciting!

James

I guess we would call a knitted jumper with no sleeves a tank top! So pretty much a reversal

Rosalyne

In the UK, a jumper with no sleeves would be a tank top and a T-shirt with no sleeves is a vest (an undershirt is also a vest). A waistcoat is the formal, no sleeves, with buttons item that might also be called a vest in American English? Language is complicated!

ValkyrionSS

I find it really relatable honestly. I'm autistic and I used to have an extremely restrictive diet (sensory issues and whatnot). Like, I would avoid social functions if I thought I wouldnt be able to eat anything there. But at 20 I got a full-time job at a supermarket and I guess something about the constant exposure to food made expand my horizons... like, a LOT. It was truly life-changing. So I wouldn't be surprised if working at this little café has a positive impact on Charlie’s willingness and ability to eat. It's a nice thought! 😊

Julie

Sounds like exactly the opposite! Thank you both. Re: "waistcoat", we'd call that a vest, too.

Ashley Robinson

I love seeing both their perspectives. It’s so hard.

James

And maybe it's a good thing they become more self reliant BEFORE they go away? So they're more prepared to face long distance when it actually happens. As nice as it might seem to have one last carefree year together, we know they're in this for the long haul so preparing for that seems wise. And that doesn't mean they're never going to see eachother. They're round each others houses most days, sleeping over at least once a week. And Charlie working one or two shifts a week in sixth form will really help him when he goes to uni himself and needs to find a part time job while he's studying there (train fares are getting expensive 😞)

James

Also this raises a question I've had about S2. At the prom, Nick comments on Tao's wearing of 'suspenders'. I always thought suspenders was an American term and that we'd always say 'braces' over here. Or has it crept into British English now? See when I hear suspenders I always assume it means... well, the item of lingerie (as in stockings and suspenders). 😂 Maybe I'm just showing my age!

ZooKeeperHere

Charlie working around food ❤️ and setting boundaries!

Megan

Such a cosy looking cafe! I'd absolutely go there! (Can't wait to see that setting become live-action - if we get a final 4th season of course! Speaking it into the universe and hopefully netflix manifests!) But oh gosh this is making me so SAD!! It's good that Charlie is being sensible and recognising that he can't abandon his school work at every opportunity no matter how badly he wants to see Nick because his school work is also important but it's sad because he can tell something is wrong with Nick. Part of me wonders if maybe it's a bit of guilt that's making Nick hold back from saying something. In his mind he's maybe thinking, "Well, I've made the choice to go to a faraway university so I can hardly come across as an annoying clingy boyfriend when I'm the one who's leaving." Also he's clearly so visibly proud of Charlie for all that he's achieved and that is undeniable so maybe he's worried it would come across completely the wrong way if he voiced that he missed him? It's clear they're both feeling the separation and missing each other but I think this is a good opportunity for them to talk about their future and how going forward they're both equally going to have to put in more effort to make their relationship work (which we know they do <3 thank goodness <3) but I just really hope it's leading to a nice heartfelt conversation rather than a fight or an argument.

RCM

"the rainy day" is such a great name! For me, rainy days symbolize both prepping for the future (the old idiom 'saving up for a rainy day') and a renewed growth in the present...and I suspect Charlie is feeling both of those things right now (between the so far off(but looming closer) future pressure of Nick being at uni AND all the amazing new things in Charlie's world now!). I love how Alice chose to draw his entire body "outside" of the panels and as the solitary barista working...it gives that air of control and the quiet confidence we have seen in Charlie this entire volume (I do miss his earring, though, hint hint, lol)...but, all the subtle details we get as he reads the texts from Nick are hitting me a little hard🥺 It's the very way he unconsciously holds his legs crossed as he stands (introducing a feeling of uncertainty that Nick's 'dw' really is a dw), and the way he is literally cradling the phone with both hands (like he is trying really hard to get as close as possible to Nick for Nick's sake because texting is hard sometimes, but when they are together and have even the lightest touch, everything seems clearer), and then, we get his expression. Charlie's wide eyed, raised eyebrows, chin pointed down, mouth slightly open (you just KNOW he is biting the inside of his lip as he types and deletes, and types and deletes...). I'm suspecting Charlie can read between the lines on Nick's texts, but also is wary that MAYBE texting isn't the best way to have a deeper conversation, so DELETE...and ❤️s it is (for now anyways). Beautiful build, Alice.

Beam Bugge

don't be sad :( because "sad" spelled backwards is "das" and das ist nicht gut

Jhosselyn Chávez Loli

So proud of charlie 🥹🩷 he's gained so much confidence and now a job around food

Rosalyne

This is also exactly what I thought! They're braces as far as I know, but I do think this is one where Americanisms might be creeping in, especially for younger Brits...

Ada Suzany

He is feeling something wrong is not right 👀

Ada Suzany

Thanx Alice!!! Have a nice day! ✨️

Nikki

I feel like Charlie’s spidey senses are tingling but he also knows he’s got responsibilities too, like his school work, head boy duties, job.

Cliff

Do your Latin homework, Charlie! Good choice, in the long run. But instead of going home and moping, Nick could also go somewhere interesting and get a cup of coffee. 😉 And maybe even do some reading assignments at the same time.

Loveislove

Sooo many questions but Alice is leading us to the novella. What I like about this theory is that it seems true to both Nick and Charlie's natures' and does not negate or downplay their absolute love and commitment to each other. It is wonderful to see Charlie grow and evolve and it has been tough to see Nick struggle. But it has been weird to see the distance between them and it has felt false. If this is a miscommunicated attempt to support each other, I get it. So ready for them to figure this out...together.

Murgy

Charlie's boyfriend senses are tingling, and he seems to have an idea is what is up, which might be why he chose to change his mind about what he was saying to Nick. After all, Nick needs some time to work it out

Justin S.

Talk to him, Char!

James

For sure! I don't see these two doing anything deliberate or calculated so miscommunication makes a lot of sense. That's the 'Why are like this' Nick and Charlie. 🥲

2catlovers

I really love how you’ve drawn this page, @Alice, with a 3/4 Charlie to the right and the panels down the left. Charlie’s stance is so relaxed and confident too! But my heart hurts for lovely Nick (my favourite character in both books & show).

Marie Antoinette

I’m thinking Charlie views Nick as the stronger of the two of them and sometimes forgets how young they are. They both need reassurance and support from each other but also from their support network. It’s a messy process finding out who you are in the middle of a relationship

Danielle Rahn

I’m proud of Charlie for maintaining healthy boundaries and focusing on work and school even when he really just wants to be with Nick. We know that our boys will work it out ❤️

Philippe Parvais

This is gonna hurt like a truck I know it’s gonna come soon

David Dougherty

does anyone else find the unrealistic? nice but all the same.

Noemiette

Charlie is not a mind reader ! Even Nick doesnt really know how to word how he feels and is keeping a happy mask on so how should Charlie magically guess ? And how is he not here for Nick ? They are still near each other all the time. Him having a shift and work one evening that keep him from going to nick that day doesnt mean he isnt there for him. And it's not about "this character cant do anything wrong"

Charlie

This warms my heart as a Charlie who named himself after this lil guy and who is a barista, I'm so happy 🥺🥺🥺

Indy

charlie is doing so well with those boundaries !! someone get nick a therapist STAT
