Of course David had to go along and say that

Merel

Oh 🥲

qwerty

Is this the Solitaire fight he's thinking about?

Jessica Sloan

What do you want a cookie for not being a monster?

Carina

I feel so sorry for Nick keep having flashbacks all the time 😢

zara ahmed !!

THIS FLASHBACK NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Chloe ♡

‘trying to be nice’ oh david 😭

Shannon

Ouch my heart 💔😢

Faye

David trying to be nice? This is a moment in history

Darling

😫😫😫

Merel

Seeing the fight from Nick's POV makes it hurt all over again

Brittney Tarr

With every post I get more and more worried about Nick.

Dani

Nick thinking about Charlie when he was going through it… like 🥲🥲

Sarah Jacobs

Oh Nicky :( that boy needs therapy so so much 😢

ruthie.von

I need Nick in therapy stat 😭

Ulises

Nick 😢 oh Charlie I really hope you can visit Nick needs you 🥺

Malcolm Grant

I actually think he is trying to be nice. He’s just crap at it.

Alisha Buchanan

I think it’s good that David is showing a little respect. Our boys are going to have a tough year and this is the little moments we’re starting to see in their heads.

Teri Lyn

Ugh I hate sad Nick 💔

Pansexualdarling

If we don't get Nick into therapy soon, Imma start throwing chairs

Henna Punjabi

it sounds like david is trying to be genuine for once but Nick’s brain is making him think of the times charlie wasn’t okay

zara ahmed !!

david actually trying to be nice is so miraculous, i’m gaining the tinsiest bit of hope 🤏🏼

Barb

Remembering charlie having an episode😭...give nick a break, david😠

Justin S.

David you are not helping 😠 Nick flashing to that moment… he needs to just have a vent session or something

Mikaila Shaw

I think it was actually nice :(

Brittney

Damn... I felt all the emotions right there

Luke

I’m thinking Nick might actually be traumatized from seeing Charlie go through all his mental health problems. It’s not easy for the person going through it or the people around them and I’m sure Nick felt awful that he couldn’t just fix Charlie and make him feel better immediately

zekeelis

This is cruel

EC

Oh Nicky. Maybe it’s time for you to get your own Geoff. ❤️

Robby C

All the best with tomorrow Alice 🫂

Katy

Poor nick. He puts so much pressure on himself and feels responsible for Charlie's well-being. This boy needs his own therapy❤️

Victoria Panaro

David you can try better !! Nick is so helpless right now and I'm feeling that His brother living with them is gonna trigger him even more.

Lili

Right me too :( Nick is just so scared of Charlie getting bad again it’s so sad

Ann-Marie Still

Oh, God......is this David getting a bit of a redemption? It's a step in the right direction and this could be the beginning of him and Nick rebuilding their relationship. Please don't be a dick David. Nick needs you 🥺

elisa

oh nick baby you need therapy now you’re traumatized 💔

Charlie

PTSD support for Nick. Come on Sarah, notice your son is struggling. Also, Alice please don’t feel you need to explain anything to us. Draw and post when it suits you. Take your time, heal and rest. Please know we love you and just want you to be safe and happy. x

Brynn Rabinowitz

Seriously, David does not need to be so cruel. Nick definitely could benefit from therapy.

Mikaila Shaw

Definitely. I would love to see a continued David arc. Maybe him recognizing Nick is in trouble and speaking with him? But I may be asking for something wild 😝

Ann-Marie Still

Also Alice, you don't need to explain yourself to anyone, but equally anticipating tomorrow's message 🥰

Brian Chittum

For Nick's sake, I hope David is being genuine

Tina

in one of the last posts you said n&c won't be in heartstopper, will it be glossed over like this winter? or will it not be mentioned at all? also idk if you saw my response to the thumbnail issue thing, as of now it's still showing me the wrong thumbnail for episode 2

Chloe ♡

now nick is going to go to his room with his cold cup of tea and contemplate everything 💔

Tina

was that argument january of that year? so about 9ish months ago?

aliceoseman

I don't know yet, but it'll probably be referenced in some way. And hopefully Netflix will resolve the thumbnail issue soon.

John Deuel

And ep 4 of the TV adaptation carried that whole scene SO well. Such an incredible amount of powerful storytelling in just a few seconds. I’m still in awe.

Heather N.

The flashbacks 😮‍💨 my poor sweet baby angel. It’s hard to remember that sometimes when we experience health trauma, so do our partners. And they need help sometimes too

Tina

awesome! i saw so many people also mention it i didn't realise you hadn't been aware of it yet hahah

eva cuervo

David trying to be nice? Alice, Who is this and what have you done with David?🤣🤣

Julie

It does seem like David is actually trying, but it makes me wonder if it's because he's honestly trying to be nice(r) or if he's just trying to make his mom happy enough that she doesn't kick him out.

Irene.a.f

💕 they're all growing up - even David! BTW, still working on S3 on Netflix, but I find I'm unable to binge. Need to keep a steady supply of tissues, because *all* the feels. I love these characters SO MUCH, I don't know how I lived so long without them

Merel

Charlie is doing better, but Nick hasn't even started processing everything that happened and how it impacted him. It makes sense that Nick has his own trauma, seeing a loved one go through that and probably feeling quite a bit of helplessness. It will be a difficult journey, not made easier by David moving back home and Charlie being busier. I'm equal parts excited and scared to see Nick's storyline play out this volume. (p.s. Nick please get therapy x)

Loveislove

Interesting insight into Nick's thoughts. This shows the heavy burden he is carrying and the fear he still has about leaving Charlie. This fight was quite awhile ago but immediately flashed before his mind with jagged intensity. This is the 2nd flashback - first with Elle at the Halloween party remembering a disassociated and withdrawn Charlie during a hospital visit- he has not come through that period and I don't think he has talked to Charlie about it never mind a therapist yet. No wonder the idea of the future has him frozen- Nick is still terrified from the past. I don't know how subconscious these thoughts are but we are beginning to get somewhere now to understanding the masking - poor Nick - maybe David will be that outside perspective that will help pry off the mask.

Krystyn

The flashback 🥺 dealing with mental health issues is never a linear process. it really breaks my heart to see Nick struggling so much! I can’t help thinking about what will happen when we arrive to the timeline of the novella Nick and Charlie. Anywho Alice you have important personal things happening next week and I send you plenty of positive thoughts ! 💜

Ann-Marie Still

I really hope he's maturing and is possibly the one who sees just how much Nick needs help himself. I hope he takes a step back and recognises that Nick has always been there for him even when he's been completely horrid.

James

Of course Nick would benefit from therapy, but the tragic reality is, it's not an option for many/most people. The health service is so overstretched that often only those in serious acute crisis get the help they need and without ridiculously long waiting times (as we saw in chapter 6 when Charlie was admitted to A&E) or if you can afford very expensive private care (as in the TV series) It's a really, really bad situation. One that costs lives and has other extremely serious consequences. Perhaps Sarah's in a position to pay for Nick to have his own Geoff, but it's also entirely possible that she isn't.

Julie

I'm honestly very confused about my feelings for David. S3 made me feel really sad for him when he was waiting around for their dad to show up and Nick knew he wouldn't, but David was still hopeful. Maybe David is a dick because he has abandonment issues and the thing with their dad leaving was harder on him because he was older at the time. Maybe he and their dad were close. Not that it's an excuse to be so awful to Nick, but it does make me feel like there's more to David than just being a one-dimensional big brother asshole.

Glenn

Why can't it be both? Maybe David's breakup with Jess gave him some new perspective?

Michelle Glegg

That’s why I prefer the show David to the comic David. He’s more three dimensional in the show going by what Alice and Kit have said in the past.

Cody

Oh David. I still have hope for him to be less of an ass. Something has to happen soon. Nick breaking down, blowing up at someone, or much worse

Leira Torreblanca pineda

Nick was just the charlie's support all the timebbut now he can start to process and look up him self 🥺

Cody

Also, imagine Kit acting this scene out. It will be amazing

Ann-Marie Still

That's what I'm hoping. Also, he is hurting from their dad's inability to be a decent parent.

Noah

i get that david is trying to ‘be nice’ but at the same time the fear of your loved one going back to old habits is a so fucking real tbh.

Claire

Poor Nick -- he went through so much alongside Charlie -- he has not been able to realise just how much it affected him too. He will likely only be able to process that once he confidently feels that Charlie is okay -- but then he will feel adrift thinking Charlie does not need him. David -- I just don't know -- perhaps he was not meaning to be cruel as he does not have the emotional intelligence to understand what those words would mean to Nick?

Laura Humber

Nick realising that his mental health has majorly been effected too bless him

Michelle Glegg

I think David is trying to be nice. I think he’s just doing it in a David way (lacking emotional intelligence and not being so good at expressing emotions properly)

Brenda L

The way such simple words, “stays that way”, remind Nick that Charlie’s mental health will always be something Charlie will struggle with (or in better words will have to continue to learn coping mechanisms to manage triggers, is a lifelong commitment). You can interpret so much emotions in his expressions: panic, worry, acceptance, love all wrap into one. I am always amazed by how much Alice can express so much emotion in her drawings. The way Nick cares for Charlie is something everyone struggling with mental health issues deserves in a partner. I am excited for Nick’s storyline to continue, he deserves similar care from his inner circle. I am afraid that since he is so use to taking care of others before himself that he will need to hit rock bottom in order to ask for support. ❤️‍🩹

Ariel

Awwww Nick😥 just want to give him a hug...and yes...mental health is a lifelong journey, and Charlie's own journey has affected Nick as well Take as much time as you need Alice! We love you🍂💕

arlo🧞

oh nick 😟

Jeffrey Ricker

OMG WHO IS THIS AND WHAT HAS HE DONE WITH THE REAL DAVID? 😂

Eileen

Enjoy your little break Alice :) love reading your little notes to us. We are such lucky fans.

Ashley Robinson

Nick needs to talk this all out. He has trauma from so many directions probably starting from the divorce of his parents. I cannot wait for him to start his healing. ❤️‍🩹

Tanya

As someone who works with teenagers, I hope they can get to a place where Nick can say "This is how you that in a nicer way". A bit unrelated but I watched S3 E7 last night and was struck by how panicked and angry Nick's reaction was to David walking in on them in his bedroom, like it was a lot. It highlighted how fraught their relationship is so it's nice to see them possibly moving in a more supportive direction.

Katrina

David actually trying to be nice? Oh wow I need to record this moment in history 🤣 but poor Nick seeing the fight from his perspective makes it even more painful 😣 I really hope Nick goes to therapy because the boy needs it really badly

HeartstopperFan123

I dont understand why there was that flashback or why he was upset with david. Can someone please explain?

Auna 🍉

Ditto and well said. Alice, you are not beholden to us!! Please take care. Xo

ucfnurse

Nick needs this kind of mental health support☺️🥹🫂🤞☕️🍵🐾🐶😻😍💕🌋🏋️‍♂️✌️🕊️☮️

Scott Whittall

OK I really want David to turn into a decent fella. He has it in him. David has been horrible to Nick for so long, Nick's built a "you can't hurt me" wall to avoid any pain David dishes out. But we all know deep down, their deadbeat Dad has effected David a bit more than Nick. David does not have the relationship Nick has with Sarah. He really has had no one to confide in. Isolation can build powerful huge walls as well. That would be the "I'll hurt you before you can hurt me" wall. Nick wants a relationship with his brother. Knock those walls down, Nick and spread the love as only you can. Let the healing begin.

Gemma 🍂💙💛

David was probably being sarcastic. Nick was flashing back to Charlie’s bad moments and probably internally hoping they don’t happen again

Hopeless

We're definitely here for nuanced David

Eileen Mercado

sometimes something (seemingly small) can trigger a memory that was hurtful and has impacted you greatly. David just speaking about charlie probably made those memories flash. i don’t think he was upset with David i think he was upset with himself because that moment still weighs on him like it did charlie when it first happened, except nick never talked through it like charlie did.

Tyne Swedish

Nick baby go talk to somebody. Even your mom. Please

Diana N

Unfortunately therapists cannot give individual therapy to two people who are related or who are partners. I don’t think Geoff would or should do couples therapy with them.

RCM

David’s nonchalant “Cool. Hope he STAYS THAT WAY” is meant for as good as David can muster, but it hits our vulnerable and uncertain Nick extra hard. Healing comes in cycles with layers of wins and even layers of setbacks whirled in…and whereas Charlie has been in therapy, processing and working on himself, Nick has remained steadfast in his support role without questioning himself about himself (because that would be selfish, right? I’m Charlie’s boyfriend and I love him and WANT to support him…). The flashback here reminds me how much Nick owned the trauma of what happened that night…HE was the one that left, after all…In his mind, it wouldn’t have happened if he had stayed (so, yea, he feels like it’s his fault). You can see it in the way Alice drew his eyes here. The fear, the guilt, the pain…it’s still so raw and bubbling right under the surface in Nick. And now, with the thought of REALLY leaving for uni, maybe to a place where he couldn’t come when Tori called, is just too much (especially on top of Nick’s anxiety about who he is without Charlie, what he wants to do….) It’s just too much for one person to carry, but that cycle of healing (or lack of) is catching up to Nick and pulling him in, building up the pressure. He can go isolate in his room now, but, our sweet Nick is needing his own healing journey. And David is so predictable, sadly. ‘Mom said be nice to Nick, especially about Charlie. So I did. I asked. I was sooo nice. And he didn’t even appreciate me asking. He just walked off. Not my problem. I tried. I did my part. Nick is the issue. Selfish little brother…’ yea, well, 🤬 you, David. And close your door so you can be mad in your room without pestering, I mean, being “nice,” to Nick!

Samantha White

I wonder if David was being sincere but Nick has never known him to be sincere about Charlie so he can't hear what David says without thinking he is putting Charlie down.

Lily T

oh :(

Cliff

So many possibilities where this could go next! I think Nick is too kind to just throw away the bone that’s been thrown to him, even if it was just a bone. And Sarah surely didn’t just say “be respectful.” There was also some talk about the extent of Nick’s suffering through all this. Every page a cliffhanger still!

DD 🍂

David putting any sort of effort into being decent to Nick is progress. If nothing else hopefully it means home can still be a safe space for Nick (and Charlie). Oh Nick that terrible night of the argument is still such a raw, vivid memory. Hoping Sarah or Charlie notice how much pressure Nick is under soon and don’t accept “I’m fine”.

Phlimsical

I totally agree! I didn't get the vibes that David was being genuinely kind or amiable - he asked about Charlie as a 'tick box' exercise to play nicely, all because his Mummy told him off for being an absolute fridge! If you read pages 1661 - 1666 in one go, his insincerity just flies off the page. He only gives a cursory glance in Nick's direction before going back to tap tap tapping on his phone. And the snarky response about "I was being nice!" is, as you said, just so predictable! I am so worried about Nick, I hope he finds help soon 😥

Jo Mary

Poor nick x he needs a hug 🤗

David C Witkin

It's like David is trying to exercise a limb he never uses. It's like he's trying to walk on his hands or something. He may get there eventually, but the effort is going to look pretty awkward.

Natalia Seguel Arenas

Gee, David, I wonder why Nick gets defensive when you speak to him about Charlie...

camelotcrusade

Ah, the first time I read this, I missed the door frame blocking the tail of the speech bubble, and I thought NICK said the retort. That didn't make sense to me so I went to the comments.... and realized I had better re-read that. Oops. 😅

Jay

all the angst incoming, I am scared to open a page lately 😭

Cliff

Since there was a flashback photo showing young Nick and David, I have this image in my head of little Nick bawling his eyes out while leaning on his brother, with David thinking "I can't be sad. I'm supposed to be the strong one," and that if both brothers let their emotional guards down, there could be a catharsis between them that would make me cry for days.

Michelle wright

David being nice?! *shocked* although seriously it would be nice to have a turning point in the relationship between him and nick, not necessarily a redemption but maybe finding a way to move on and david growing up a bit

Dustin Westfall

I really hope it isn’t a long hiatus from posting! But all of us support your work and the stories you create so we all will be fine with waiting! I know you recently posted about surgery so hopefully you heal well and take time to do self care! Xx

Beam Bugge

I think we would be in December right now, so it’s more like 11 months probably!

Loveislove

Thanks to Tina and Alice for spotlighting there is no fault attached to Charlie for Nick's current struggles. They are a deeply loving couple who shared a traumatic experience and continue to support each other - that's love darling. Just as Charlie needed to be open to seek help and recover and thrive, so does Nick. They are each other's light and will get there.

Beam Bugge

Aww, I do think he’s genuinely trying, but it also kind of reminds me of when Ben was all “I’m trying to be nice 🥺” (right after he’d just made fun of Charlie for wearing a jacket) and that wasn’t at all genuine so idk what to believe 🤷🏼

Beam Bugge

I totally agree with everyone else that Nick needs therapy, but sadly it’s not easy to get access to (especially when you’re 18+ and don’t have any official mental illness)

Josh

I don’t know how I feel about this scene. A part of me wants to have hope that David has finally come around but I’m still suspicious of him.

IME

This is the better Part of the day! 🥰

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

It has been difficult for Nick and Charlie as a couple to deal with their illness but they have coped very well 🥺😭💗

Siero

i woke up to this and now im crying

Nils

Okay I have to admit i‘m not sure about David. Is this him being genuinely nice and if so is it out of free will because Sahra explained or is it because she issued a no nonsense ultimatum to him.

Murgy

David, taking you at your word, sometimes even being nice can have negative side effects. Flashbacks are hard to control and intrusive at the best of times, and flashing back to that isn't pleasant. Hopefully David is genuinely trying, but one conversation is too hard to judge either way.

Laura

Tbh I think Nick had anxiety and ADHD. And I know that is unintentional from Alice but Nick is very ADHD coded.

Beam Bugge

I love the idea of nick having anxiety and/or adhd, but even if he does he has yet to get officially diagnosed with either, and in my experience that makes it difficult to get the help you need (such as therapy)

Pheobe Jackson

The last panel kind of shocked me 😳 I didn't read anything cruel into what David said; I can believe he really meant it like he hopes Charlie's progress stays strong. But I could also see how it could be misinterpreted. Idk, I just want him to have a redemption arc so bad, for Nick's sake and his own. I give him brownie points for trying.

Sulagna Maitra

I love how in Heartstopper, Alice has built these little contrasts to show the importance of friends and family on our lives. Charlie, Tori and Oliver are pretty much ride or die siblings and that is part of Charlie's strength. In Nick's family however, he can't rely on anyone except his Mum, Nellie or Henry. And that probably limits the people he can have young adult conversations with- like about love, sex, long distance relationships or mundane stuff like university applications.

Margarita

i feel nick. when someone's been rude to you always, its wierd and un-trust-worthy when they're nice

Neenie

David looks so disaffected
