Nick's feelings are hidden too deep. He knows something is wrong, but he won't take the initiative to open up about it himself. I think either Charlie has to gently but firmly pry it out of him, or something needs to happen that will force everything to the surface—for better or for worse. Probably initially for the worse, but it will be for the better in the long run.

Of course it is exactly right what Charlie is saying but it's one thing to hear your partner say nice things, and feel good about that, and it is another thing to truly believe that in your gut. At this point, if Nick and Charlie broke up, Charlie would still be devastated, but he wouldn't take it to mean that he is an unworthy person or can't offer the world something still. I don't think Nick could say the same. But Nick is perceptive, has an amazing sense of empathy, loves to do research on topics, and is good with people. Those are skills that could translate into a career. But until he believes in himself a bit more, he will just feel bad, and inadequate. Also on another note, I found it telling that he didn't mention David or the outburst. (And it was an outburst because David was being fine. Not terribly sympathetic to him, but the yelling wasn't warranted.)

You can feel Nick's lethargy lift as soon as that laptop loudly clicks "shut". His adorable smile takes over and the birds on his sheets fly him over to Charlie as his first response is to listen and respond to Charlie's evening. But the default to facade takes over. He tells the truth about his worries - not knowing who he is but softens and deflects the seriousness of his statements with lols and hahas. Even his contact photo looks stressed. And the big one - no mention of David's return. Nick is actively subverting his own needs and feelings - no idea if it is consciously done. Charlie offers up love and support which brings up the blushes. I think some face to face will be needed to crack Nick's spiral. Looking forward to some cuddle time.

Thinking back - Nick has taken the initiative to open up about his struggles a few times. On the uni trip, he confided to Elle and Tara he didn't know who he was without Charlie and uni would be part of finding that out. He also talked to Charlie in volume 5 about his lack of confidence and feeling lost when Charlie was not around and struggling with his identity since discovering he was bisexual. And now he has again told Charlie he doesn't know who he is. Perhaps a stronger issue is Nick's fear of Charlie's relapse and his perception that he must remain "strong" to prevent that. Another issue may be Charlie's belief that Nick is better adjusted than he is because he says so. Part of me feels that Charlie should be a little more tuned into Nick than to believe that. But he may be in turn be trying to look strong for Nick. Why are they like this? 😊

This is why I wish that Alice would write in Nick going to therapy and talking with Charlie. It would send a strong statement to the "worried well" kiddos that everyone could use help with something...and talk about the maturity level it could bring their characters relationship to.

I love/hate the layout of this page (sorry Alice🫶)...I love what feels like an intentional structure of all their texts neatly stacked to the left (providing some stability to Nick's mood), each panel progressively getting smaller (as Nick's heart rate and guilt slow and fade just texting with Charlie), and then how each panel zooms in closer and closer into Nick's face, which is looking happier and lighter as we go (the sweetest thing he has ever known is being loved by Charlie...and uni admission teams would totally appreciate and accept this recommendation IF they KNEW Charlie, hello..😍). The part I dislike (hate is kind of strong for me in general, lol) is Nick's facade he puts on, "I have no idea who I am lol..." He is still at that place where that statement is too scary to admit to Charlie (and even worse, to himself) that he REALLY feels that way...so he jokes it off, lightens the mood, and clings to what makes him FEEL so good, so loved, so himself, and that is Charlie Spring. And that hardest part is that I still don't think Nick is fully aware that he is avoiding his thoughts right now, and I know Charlie would normally be really attuned with reading what is going on with Nick, but there has been SO MUCH BUSY lately...so Nick is able to push it down (although it's getting harder to do this though with David home and impending deadlines where surely someone is going to notice Nick is behind...), and continue in his "not feeling right but it's not so loud or truly awful that I need to worry about ME yet" distracted, uncertain, kind of isolated headspace🥺 ((And the reader/fan in me is like, for god's sake Nick, Sarah gave you sheets with birds "of change" on them...please know change is inevitable this year, but it will be okay too....I promise!))

Yes to lots of this! This whole thing is interesting to me because Nick already confided in Charlie about feeling lost without him and not knowing himself very well in Vol. 5, but they both seem happy to have left it there. This isn't the first time that they thought they had talked about something but actually only talked for a few minutes and never came back to it. So, "I have no idea who I am lol" may sound like he's making light of it, but it might also be a tender first foray back into the topic to gauge how Charlie will respond. Just dipping a toe into the deep end to test the waters. The deep end got kind of scary last time they were there, so I can see why Nick's taking baby steps! Plus, Charlie's response suggests that he's very familiar with that "lol" and sees through it, at least somewhat. 🤞

Yes, good point, Sascha. We know by now it takes a village to help someone dealing with MH issues. But when that person reaches out it has to start there. We know Nick cannot speak to anyone else as with Char. And, Charlie undoubtedly will rely upon his own mental health journey when he realizes the depth of Nick's anxieties. Love has many ways to heal for sure.

So true! There has to be some intent (whether Nick is fully aware or not) behind that statement, and then we get that bummer/sad emoji response at the end of Charlie’s text (rather than an echoing lol emoji)…something is brewing in both of them!! I’m really interested to see where this goes. It took Nick a while (with research!) to be able to even ask Charlie about an ED, and that was when they were less busy and together way more. Plus, Charlie knows some of Nick’s insecurities are to be expected…most 6th form students have anxiety and experience stress right now. Charlie may be assessing where that line is between whether is Nick having “typical” last year of school stresses versus is he experiencing a more deeply rooted mental health struggle…before he says/doesn’t say anything to Nick. I think given Charlie’s own journey, he would proceed very slowly and intentionally (like making sure they have time and space to bring hard topics up). Like you noted, Charlie reads Nick better than anyone…❤️🤞

Oh - excellent points RCM - Charlie's emojji is speaking loudly. That is a great comparison to Nick assessing what, when and how to approach Charlie about his ED. Also - partners do become ships that pass in the night when they are very busy and lose some of their togetherness time. Nick and Charlie are still young and I think will be learning balance - how to make time for important things in their life outside their relationship but also time for each other. They are branching out from each other, perhaps in an uneven way at the moment but Nick will be gone to uni soon and they need to learn to build that couple time too.
