aaronhotchnerswhore

Oh god.. nicks worrying.. don't worry baby, it's gonna be okay

John Deuel

Protective boyfriend mode activated. Results tbd.

Merel

Nick is more anxious about this than Charlie is... Time to talk to someone, Nick! ❤️

arlo🧞

no nicks so worried ☹️

Chris

Is Nick worrying for Charlies health when he will be at uni ? 🥺

Victoria Panaro

Nick's so worried 😟 But I'm sure this is not a relapse from Charlie... I think he's just been so focused on getting the approval from the head teacher

KathrynHarrop90

Protective golden retriever boyfriend activated

emily

oh nick :(

Molly Goat

Nicky, buddy. It's okay. I promise it's okay.

Barb

Does this "Nick!" sounds like "what's going on" kind of Nick?🥺

Chloe ♡

nick walking away without letting charlie speak properly 💔

Merel

Oh Nick... I understand wanting to protect your boyfriend after everything he's been through, but part of love (and recovery) is trusting Charlie enough to know that he can take care of himself—even when things are stressful. I think Nick is struggling with the fact that he won't be able to be there for Charlie 24/7 anymore once he goes to uni, so he is overcompensating for that now by being even more protective than usual.

Maja

glad Tao and Aled are there, maybe they will spark a conversation with Charlie about what’s going on with Nick?

Antonio

ah sh*t here we go again

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

Oh damn. I know Nick's super worried about Charlie and seeing as how this is one of the first serious anxiety thing since Charlie's hospitalisation (except the events of This Winter ofc) I can see how Nick is super vigilant and scared Charlie will slide back into the Bad Days without anyone realising. But sometimes with an ED...it's just worse if someone MAKES you eat something. Even if it's out of goodwill. And even if it's typically a safe food. Sometimes we need to control what we eat that specific day. I know Charlie's probably a bit frustrated by this but I hope he understands where Nick is coming from...

Chloe ♡

i have a feeling tao and aled will ask charlie about nick after witnessing that reaction

ashley ✨

nick is so worried poor baby :(

ACxo

The way Nick cares for Charlie is showing but also his anxiety 🥺

Areesah Mobley

Oh, Nicky baby. You can't fix everything for Charlie all the time. But we love you for trying.

Maddy

oh nick...

Elizabeth Welch

My head cannon is Nick has some PTSD from Charlie's ED and he hasn't dealt with it. I think he is going to have to deal with it and start therapy if he's gonna feel OK leaving.

JT

Makes me nervous, Alice you have such a way got building intimacy and suspense in these panels, forever a fan of your artistry and world creation - Nick & Char 4eva 🫶🏻 💙 💛

Katy

Nick's really enmeshed with Charlie. Focusing on Charlie's well-being gives him a false sense of control over his own emotions. I feel like Charlie is starting to see this and will be able to lovingly bring it up with him, the same way Nick did for him ❤️

Nicky Van den Bosch

I am crying over these page! Their little anxious faces breaks my heart! 😭

toneelspeler

oof, the built up of nick's anxiety!! out of context this seems rather a quick switch but considering nick's progression so far it's so relatable to me, when you walk around with anxiety in the pit of your stomach the entire time you tend to overextend in ways that are really not necessary bc you don't have the helicopter view of the situation anymore, instead focusing on all the little things you can seemingly control (quick fire way to emotionally burnout!). you gotta talk, my friend!!

Melanie Jaeckle

Wouldn't be surprised if Charlie realizes how much PTSD he has and starts to blame himself for it, leading him to possibly breaking up with him so he isn't a "burden"

Ann-Marie Still

Nick baby, I can feel your anxiety literally bouncing off the pages. Alice, I don't know how you manage to do this, you're a genius 💜

Maisie

Oh the anxiety is just radiating off the page :((

Ellen🌈✨

Charlie just forgot his lunch and Nick has done 2+2=5

Sulagna Maitra

Alice!! What are you doing to us! 😂 Nick was already stressed and now Charlie has forgotten his lunch? 🤨🧐

Nikki

Feels like this page is cleverly done, because I can’t decide if Nick has just gone to panic stations for Charlie’s welfare because he forgot lunch or whether Nick is trying to mask his own anxiety/concerns by taking care of Charlie. Oh these boys and this story have my heart.

a

oh my baby he’s so worried about charlie still :(

Tiffany L

Acts of service *is* his love language.

Justin S.

Oh Nicholas! 🥺

Lolli98

Nick doesn't worry, he panics! He acts almost like a robot: "I have to help Charlie, I have to take care of Charlie..." Even though Charlie doesn't need his help at the moment. Also, I think subconsciously it's a welcome situation for the supportive Nick to feel needed again. After a while, he felt lost when Charlie didn't need him so much. So he runs off without even listening to Charlie.😕 I wonder what Aled and Tao will say...

aniatka

And also the page shows how Nick is still focused on Charile, neglecting himself, his feelings & needs. Nick, darling it's so unhealthy. Tara was right, you need to discover who are you without your lovely boyfriend. As a person and beautiful human being. Keep my fingers crossed for this yourney you need so much ❤️❤️❤️

Loveislove

Whoa - Nick literally broke into a sweat moving towards the cafeteria to get food for Charlie without listening to him. I can almost hear Cordelia from Buffy - "Trauma much?" I am glad that Tao and Aled were there to witness. They can bring their perspectives to that very telling interaction and give Charlie a chance to verbalize his thoughts.

Glenn

Uh-oh. I hope this isn't Charlie reacting to Nick telling him, "I love making you happy."

toneelspeler

addition to this: i see people saying PTSD but i would be careful saying that. it's a diagnosis with huge repercussions and while Nick might have experienced some very hard times during the peak of Charlie's illness, it doesn't necessarily have to result in Nick having PTSD. He's very stressed though, that's for sure.

Merel

Yes exactly 🥲 He keeps finding ways to push his own feelings to the side. People who don't know him that well might still see him as the golden retriever boyfriend who just wants to help Charlie, but the mask is starting to crack. Nick is under a lot of pressure, both internally and externally, and it's clearly taking its toll on him. It's not a tenable situation but it's difficult to break out of, too.

RCM

That buildup when the support person then becomes the one who NEEDS support can be so slow, so subtle, that it IS missed by everyone…that is where Nick is right now. Numb to himself (because how does he even begin to unravel his ball of anxiety with strings attached especially to Charlie and his mum), hyper focused on Charlie (he knows what to do here because he is practiced, he thinks anyways), unable/unwilling to say what is really going on inside his head/heart. The problem is that this kind of behavior could make Charlie FEEL like Nick DOES sees him a fragile person (even though Nick’s responses here stem from issues coming from HIM and not really about Charlie at all…)🥺 Strong partnerships like Nick-and-Charlie are like a see-saw….when one person is down, the other rises and supports to maintain equilibrium…but it’s supposed to alternate who is “struggling”…that is how people bend and stretch and build a growth mindset and develop as individuals and as partners...it seems like our dear Nick is stuck in a protective, very caring and loving, but a little fixated place, sweet love that he is, as he continues to (try to) suppress all the fear and angst and uncertainty he has just under the surface…and I’m not sure NOT listening to Charlie is going to be well received 🫣🙁 Again, the emotions captured on this page are top notch. I love the detail that Nick grabbed his jacket to go with him…it’s like he needed to escape for a minute, but I don’t think he knows the real reason why yet. I ache for both of them…🥺

Claire

Oh goodness, the anxiety from both of them just radiates off this page. It is going to take a long time before Nick can in any way relax over Charlie's eating habits. He just wants to sort it -- he just wants to take care of Charlie. That is okay -- acts of care for your partner are great. Except Nick sees it as his duty -- and his main role or function in their relationship to do that -- and that is not healthy or good for either of the boys. Plus, Charlie needs -- as he was about to -- to deal with his own issue over eating. For Charlie 'I need to grab something to eat because I have forgotten my lunch -- and I can and will do that. I will not use this as a reason to not eat.' Which, with the pressure of being head student and having just come out of an unproductive meeting with the head teacher he easily could have done. My heart.

Ai Bui

Nicky boy, your wise boyfriend once said he didn’t want you to treat him like he’s some fragile, broken mess. Your externalized anxiety’s propelling you a lil’ close to the sun there bud. 😔

Noemiette

😬 and that's when Nick's anxieties are gonna start weighting on both of them. Nick is so focused on what he thinks is his main role in life, taking care of the people he loves, it's gonna start being too much. Charlie's ed didnt magically disappear and yeah it's the 2nd time this volume he forgets to eat but while it's good that Nick gently points it out, if Charlie says he can get his own food, then he can :/

Scott Whittall

Hmmmm, really not sure what to think here. In any other circumstance this would be a boyfriend simply grabbing his guy some lunch. But there is definitely something brewing. Nick's motivation should be clear. But walking away, jacket in hand, shoulders slumped. What's up young man? Char, walk with him. He is just taking care of you. Go, take car of him, too.

Chris Provan

Nick, listen to Charlie! Engage with him, go together, let him make his choices and support him… don’t do everything for him! Poor lads just trying to be the best for each other and not quite getting it right.

Scott Whittall

Agree. We are all so invested in the happiness of our boys. A page like this takes us all down the steep hill of this emotional rollercoaster. All we can do it hold on tight and wait to see if Alice, relieves our anxiety, or sends us into the heart swallowing double loopty loop.......

SuzyLd

Worrying about everyone and sorting out everything else and using other things as a distraction to not have to deal with your own issues. Been there.

Jacqui Chesterton

Don't think he's *just* going to the cafeteria guys

PupFenrir

I never thought of that until you said it. In one of my AA meetings, I met my former sponsor and he was like that, going to meetings pretty much every day or night and doing acts of service for the meetings. It was just in his nature but it was too much. After two years of constant meetings and service to others or group as a whole, it was getting to him. I tried to help him to get an equal balance but alas, it didn't work.

Martina Magnusson

Uh-ow are we getting closer to the fight.. 😔😱💔

Audrina

Yeaaaah 😬 I feel like, while done with extremely good intentions, this wasn't the best move Nicky...

Noemiette

We are currently in like december. The novella is in may/june. We are far faaar away from that fight (doesnt mean there wont be another fight before then though)

Tiffany L

Yeah, you can express your love languages in healthy and unhealthy ways. 🩵

Brittany Cournoyer

As someone who battles a lot of depression and anxiety, it’s easier to focus on someone else and push my own issues to the side. It’s horrible for me to do, because it’ll well up and I eventually explode like a geyser, but it’s how I cope.

RyGy

Alice, please tell me we will get a conclusion to this this week? I know yesterday you said you’d soon be taking a break from posting new updates soon.

Brittney

Aww he truly is the best boyfriend ever, Nick Nelson we don't deserve you but at the same time we do deserve you! 🤧

CinD

✨ Therapy ✨

S S

Also, the N+C Novella fight might not even be a big part of the comic story line. I find it very refreshing to see this version of comic nick and charlie deal with things in a more comic nick and charlie way, if you know what I mean. At this point the novella feels a bit out of character compared to their comic characterisation

aliceoseman

This scene doesn't really 'conclude' anything so to be honest I don't think there's a good place to pause! I think I'm going to pause after this page and begin the mini-comic tomorrow, I'll share a post about it in a bit.

Jennifer Paddock

You can almost feel Nick's relief that Charlie needs something. His need to help kicked in so hard he didn't hear (or just ignored) Charlie. MUST GET SANDWICH! 💔 Poor kids - Nick really needs to get to a breaking point soon, he can't keep this up. *hugs*

RyGy

😫😫😫😫😫

Katrina

Oh Nick this was not the best choice you should have let Charlie speak before walking away. Charlie does not want you treating him like a fragile broken mess that needs to be fixed. I feel like this is gonna lead to an argument but it will be good because Nick will finally come clean about how he is feeling. I think Charlie definitely knows something is up now because Nicks anxiety is getting way worse. I think Tao and Aled will aka Charlie what is up with Nick. Nick is definitely using this as a deflection but also as an outward expression of his anxiety he feels like he has to take care of Charlie especially after everything he has been through but Charlie can take care of himself it is a part of his recovery. Charlie was just forgetful due to the head teacher stuff this is not a relapse but in Nicks mind it is because his anxiety is through the roof and this is more than likely the braking point and he is finally going to start to crack and they will have a conversation about it and work though it together and get Nick the help he needs.

Dionne Lakey

I've had this exact thought about the N + C novella. Like Solitaire, it isn't the same as the Heartstopper story.

Dionne Lakey

It's like Nick is physically running away from the worry he has for Charlie. He's seeing Charlie be disappointed and upset and then forgetting about food. It's probably just a regular hiccup for Charlie but Nick is blowing it up in his mind and instead of talking it through with Charlie and dealing with his concern, he's overstepping. It's a way of pushing the fear away and self-soothing by doing something to solve the problem. How far he will push it once he returns with food will be interesting.

ucfnurse

Thank goodness Charlie has Nick!!!☺️😊🙌🥰💘🤞🥤🥪✨🎄✌️🕊️☮️

DioVosje

Charlie isn’t just his mental illness Nick…

ferah

I think this is one of those moments where Nick is dealing with so many things he can’t control, so he’s focusing on the one thing he can control, which is something as simple as getting Charlie a sandwich. While it may not have been what Charlie needed at this moment, Nick just needed to feel in control of something, so I believe thats why he was so gung-ho about getting him a sandwich!

Cliff

Yay! A mini-comic! It’s been ages since one of those…

Maggie

Oh Nick.

Gregory Toner

I have this feeling that Nick is off to do something dramatic… is he going to get the squad motivated?!?!? Sir Nicholas to the rescue 🏉

Cliff

A second questionable choice in a row. I don’t think he should have told Charlie that he’ll change the administration’s mind about the Pride Club. Disappointments are a part of life, and I think that instead of making Charlie feel better, it actually puts more pressure on him. He can only do his best; whatever happens happens.

Neenie

Nick: I’ll get you food, we can make this work. Charlie: don’t try to fix me!!!

Neenie

But why can I hear Joe saying that NICK and it hurts so much

artxsta

charlie forgetting to eat when he’s stressed is very normal due to the fact that old habits, even if people have tirelessly worked to fix/recover them, can run deep. and i agree w the comments in that nick doesn’t know how to help w everything else that’s going on (whether that’s help himself or help charlie as head boy because it’s so much bigger than him) so jumps to action w the first thing, in a while it seems, that he can ‘fix.’ i don’t think nick is treating charlie as fragile or unable to help himself at ALL, rather, this is about nick. a lot of nick’s self-worth comes from being useful and needed. which is also why when the rugby boys joked that he’s useless when charlie wasn’t around, it hit deep. through actions nick is reminded of who he is, and when he’s unable to do that, it manifests in the form of anxiety, feeling lost, and not having a strong sense of self.

Harri Watson

See this is where it goes wrong- because Nick doesn’t mean anything by it other than just wanting to support Charlie. But Charlie will take it a different way and it just clashes.

Harri Watson

I don’t think Nick means it like that though, as he is simply just trying to help keep Charlie from sinking into questioning spaces. I understand how his method might not be the right way for Charlie specifically- but it was never done or said with malice or to be a bother.

Kassie K Wilson

Busy Charlie=nervous Nicholas 🥺🥺🥺

Hannah Howden

I feel your panic Nick… even if it’s not helpful, I feel you

Beam Bugge

first Charlie did it with nick during his coming out, then tori did it with Charlie during solitaire, now nick is doing it with Charlie... no one knows how to take care of themselves in this universe lmao

Beam Bugge

and in the show tara did it while darcy was kicked out of their home 😭

Polythene Pam

Charlie. Let your man take care of you!

Beam Bugge

charlie you should know by now that your boyfriend is a stubborn little shit in this situation though it might have been better if nick actually listened...

Brittany Cournoyer

Hey Alice, someone posted this on Facebook and had me wondering too: Season 2 Episode 2 question. Tao and his mom are watching TV while eating dinner. On the TV it sounds like a talk shown or game show and the presenter sounds an awful lot like Kit to me. Anyone ever thought that or heard anything about it?

Daya

Awww poor Nick…. ‘It will be okay honey you will see❤️

David C Witkin

Sounds like there's a storm a-comin' ....

Calfic

So my thoughts on the page. Nick is clearly spiraling and not really helping Charlie. Charlie may actually want to go to the cafeteria to look over options and such (especially after that meeting; he needs to be able to eat safe foods, etc, etc.), and it's actually probably not good for his mental health journey for Nick to bulldoze him, with the best of intentions, but still. It would have been MUCH better to let Charlie go to the cafeteria and then later, maybe have a quiet talk about how he needs to make sure he eats, and maybe suggest that he strategize with Geoff about it.And I get the flashbacks , Nick might be having, but this isn't the way to deal with him, and it REALLY seems like a mistake. Also, Charlie was just at a meeting where he felt he had no control, and then his boyfriend is giving him no control either, he didn't even ask what kind of sandwich he may want. Charlie wasn't fainting or something. He was just being a normal teen. (And he seems to forget food when he is really focusing on something, so again, a check-in with Geoff about it may be in order, but it isn't the worst.)

Steven

I agree. It’s likely because the Nick and Charlie in the novella was written before the comic started.

Murgy

Acts of service Nick is coming through again because he doesn't know what to do both with himself in relation to Charlie's plan not working out yet, so he is defaulting to something he knows he can do to help. Though unfortunately in this instance it is likely to have the opposite affect, as he is bulldozering through the situation, despite it being done out of love :(

Kristopher Killam

Am I the only one thinking he’s looking for an excuse to go talk to the head teacher?

Eileen

Everyone is speculating ao many things haha. Let's just wait and see.. trust Alice's process. 😍

Fran

Oh Nicky 😢

Elsie 3

Oh to live in a universe where people cope with their stress through acts of love and kindness toward others

Elsie 3

Like, even if it’s sometimes a bit flat-footed and off the mark, I’d still take it

Cliff

I agree; Nick would never do or say anything out of malice when it comes to Charlie.
