While I was away this weekend I finished a mini-comic that I've been very very slowly working on for moooonths! I'm going to hit pause on full comic tier pages soon so I can share it here (also so I can spend a few days focusing on a different project) but not sure when that'll start yet. I'll write a proper text post explaining everything when I've decided!

Very excited to hear about a mini comic soon 🤗 and I hope the new project is something wonderful and is going very well. Yes, Charlie you can change the heads mind - we have faith. And on the lunch - I am sure it is in the bag ... I really hope it is in the bag - hopefully the stress of this meeting is not causing him to forget safe eating patterns. If he doesn't have it I bet Tao and Nick will want to give him whatever they have to snack on.

Hey Alice! I had a question since I'm new to patreon. Do you have an editor that looks at the pages before you post them or is it possible when Volume 6 comes out, there will be changes from what's posted on patreon? Agree ♥️ what it may bring up even moreso than a focus on Charlie is Nick’s trauma. I’m guessing he might have an overreaction caused by getting triggered & going right into worry/fix mode 😌 which is good bc maybe it’ll be the thing that gets him to admit he now needs some help processing all of that trauma & stress ♥️ (so he can not walk on eggshells every time Charlie is going through something stressful, for fear of a relapse; there’s informed concern and empathy and then there’s trauma reactions 😌)

To be honest, I love that the eating disorder theme is gently picked up again. Whether it’s a small relapse or if it shows how Nick is still worried about Charlie…I think it’s very realistic that the topic is showing up here and there even after a recovery. (Of course my heart just wants the boys to be happy, safe and healthy ❤️)

I appreciate how the eating disorder is subtly being brought up again because it is so realistic that it is still there because the truth is it won’t ever go away so maybe this triggered it. I hope it’s just forgetfulness though and I hope Nick doesn’t worry too much but obviously he is going to worry and that is totally fine however, this might be the breaking point and he will finally open up about how he has been feeling. I’m so excited for the mini-comic!!!! and also Charlie please eat lunch and then it’s time to assemble the gang and fight this and get that safe space for everyone! Charlie is going to be okay he has a wide support system now!!!!! I personally am really interested in Nicks reaction since this might be triggering his anxiety and trauma and stress and he might be getting flashbacks to when Charlie was in a really bad place mentally.

I was thinking it might give us more context about why Nick said his relationship with David is complicated. It’s also ways good to have that context. There is a reason David is the way he is. It’s not an excuse to be a prick, but there’s a reason. Also, I wonder if he & Nick used to get along. It would add another layer to their current relationship to see something like that.

Alice, as someone with a restrictive eating disorder, thank you for including this. Hopefully Charlie is only having a bad day and he can get support from those around him, but having these minor bumps makes me feel seen ❤️ too often EDs are depicted as “you’ve recovered, now everything is fine, you’re all good”.

I appreciate you continuing to address eating disorders, it's such a complicated topic and the discourse around them is fraught. You are handling the topic very well and I'm always on the lookout for people contributing to making progress around how EDs are talked about and understood. I also like what Olivia Rodrigo does by acknowledging what it takes to achieve her public persona and as I watch the Wicked press photos fill my screen I am unsettled by the "no one is supposed to say anything" messaging out there however I also get that comments about a specific person's body are not helpful. Thank you as always for sharing your amazing work, the world is certainly a better place for it. 💜

Hey Alice! I don’t know if you will see this or not but first off, great panel and great work on book 6 so far! I have a small suggestion for a mini comic if you can get around to it maybe. It’s in Nick and Charlie’s future and it’s their wedding day. Everything seems to be going perfect until things start getting chaotic and things start going wrong. Is there a way you can build off that? Love you!

It’s tricky, because I agree, we should not comment on people’s bodies full stop - you never know what the person is going through, however if there is someone in the public eye we are concerned about all we can do is hope that the person in question has good people around them who can support that person if they need to.

I hate seeing Charlie look so defeated. He’s got an army of supporters so hopefully he’ll remember that. It’s ok to be upset but then he needs to fight back. It will be a wonderful safe place for students and hopefully some straight students will show up to realize bullying someone for just being who they are is cruel. I could see so much positive coming from his society. I honestly feel it will be achieved, with his friends, Nick and the teachers ❤️🌈

One of my (many) favorite things about Heartstopper is the way friendship is portrayed...with friends who love and support and pay attention to each other, and are there to celebrate the wins AND to help shoulder the rough patches...in that first panel, I love the way Aled (quiet but deeply aware of Charlie's disappointment), Tao (indignantly stating what we all have been thinking), and Nick (gently placing a calming hand on Charlie, offering words of hope for change) all provide support and reassurance as they sit WITH Charlie as he continues to process what and WHY the Headmaster said no...they all know how much Charlie poured into this proposal, and it really, really sucks right now. In that second panel, Charlie's SIGH feels like the defeated sigh of someone who has just rehashed every single moment of his time in the Headteacher's office, and still doesn't know what HE (the newly elected Head Boy, aka representative of the students) did wrong (um, nothing, Charlie!). AND THEN...Nick asks a seemingly innocuous question about Charlie's lunch, and the background behind Charlie grows immediately DARK...and Charlie looks up, a bit surprised. I'm so glad Alice put this "where is your food" question here...it reminds me that healing is an ongoing process...and you can see in Charlie's face in the 3rd panel all the quick rehashing of memories (from his mom, to his fight with Nick, to not wanting to be seen as fragile, to his work with Geoff, to his small wins that gradually coalesced into big ones, to the realization that he was so wrapped up in today he had not even thought about lunch)...it could be very triggering, BUT, when he looks at Nick and there is the "..." between them, Nick seems to be reflecting a "just thinking about you, not judging you and not second guessing you" kind of look. However, the background behind Charlie after this "look which somehow counts as a talk," stays dark, and as he rummages haphazardly through his bag, it makes me a little worried that this question is more triggering than Nick may have intended...this is one of those rare days I wish I could JUST TURN THE PAGE and see what happens👀❤️ (and I cannot wait for the mini comic...12 year old Nick?! There is so much potential there and cannot wait to see what Alice creates!).

I suspect, highly, that Charlie's missing one lunch isn't the main story here. I remember an earlier panel where Charlie had just forgotten to eat, because he was so busy I think writing his speech and Nick got pretty concerned. A talk may have to be had about making sure to eat. (even just grabbing a protein bar to take with him, so he has something or throwing some in his bag one day , so he always has something ). However, I'm really curious about Nick's reaction, and whether he will gently check in or whether he will spiral. Also, I have nothing good to say about the headteacher, and hopefully the queer teachers can help, along with Nick, Tao (biggest ally ever) and Aled.

I absolutely believe that more and more people will join and support Charlie in his intention in establishing a Pride Club, including Nick, all their friends and friends of their friends, maybe some parents, our three most beloved teachers and some allies, and that they will build up pressure on the headmaster and then he will give in and let it happen!

I’m so glad to see the question about the lunch! It’s either a reminder that healing from mental illness isn’t linear (I’m sure there are still days when Charlie has to will himself to eat, and he may never be totally rid of those days), or it’s a reminder that Nick still carries a lot of concerns about Charlie. Or both! No matter what, it’s so realistic and important.

Specifically if I were a teacher, I would remind the headteacher of everything Charlie has endured, in large part due to the bullying, and surely, we don't want that to happen again to anyone else. Also Mr Farouk (The more "serious" teacher) can point out that having the type of club that Charlie wants, may actually help kids stay focused on school, because they would have more of a support system.

Honestly to see the courage Charlie has done from when he told Nick to then, telling everyone at school, I know it'll actually showcase to a lot of people that him making sure more people that school could be a bit more safer for those who's in the LGBTQ+ community. Like, in many ways, doing what's right and especially doing that club would be the right thing to do because it would make sure that's a more secure and safe place for those out there. And hello, we do have people in that school who is apart of the LGBTQ+ community especially, look at the pride and happiness that Nick and Charlie brings. Also aww Charlie, I know all of this has been stressful for him, like I'm just glad he has Nick and his friends there for him, like I know as Charlie said there's days where he can control and some days he can't, but at least he's taking steps, like it's not easy dealing with mental health on top of other things too. And oooh I can't wait!!!

I can’t imagine how much stress keeping on top of your schedule must be. I feel Nick is right Charlie, you will persuade the head. (Though Tao is also right in this instance) Just because something is hard doesn't mean its not the right thing, and I think this group will be a great legacy to leave Truham, and frankly it is needed. So chin up, you can do it. And thank you Nick for checking in on Charlie like that. He does need to eat as well as plan. (And I might have misread A-level Music as Aled Music and confused myself) I look forward to hearing more about this new mini-comic :)
