Thank you Alice ! As someone who has been a therapist for 20 years working with clients with ED, recovery is very complicated. Charlie will most likely struggle on and off with this for years . I think the goal is to struggle better and to recover quicker when you have a setback 💕

Tori having an older partner same as Tao and Charlie means there's lots of modelling for long-distance relationships around them. At least N & C aren't gonna go through it alone. But also, evey relationship is different and decisions about time apart is very unique to every individual. Taking other people's advice about what it's like is not always helpful and can lead to misunderstandings and projecting in your own relationship (eek like in Nick and Charlie!).

foreshadowing of long distance plot… but I think it’ll be good that Tori can reassure Charlie or Nick bc she is going through the same thing. Also, Charlie’s not wanting toast… it says in the novella that Charlie doesn’t really eat snacks still. Which makes sense! His anorexia was partially about control and connected to his OCD, and meals are something you can plan out and still control healthily, whereas snacks are unplanned. Besides, Charlie still has bad days and progress to make, and that’s ok!! Could also be that he just doesn’t really want toast rn

I think Charlie’s last look at Nick is because he realised he said no to a snack and he knows Nick might have heard it. I can totally relay in the fact that he might not want Nick to worry because he probably feel fine but Nick is always on the look out for any « bad Charlie’s day ». Gosh they sooo need a proper talk!

Totally understand this view but I'm trying to avoid overly spelling out and explaining every single moment (something I feel can sometimes be a flaw in my writing) - personally I think this line is easy to understand from context if you're reading the pages immediately after one another!

Being apart is tough -- but it is part of life for many of those in a commited relationship during uni years. Looks like Tori has struggled with the sepseparation more than we might have expected. Another pressure for Nick and Charlie seeing that as they face next year long distance - then years following as they are at different universities. Relationships that are meant to make it do though -- and it can make relationships stronger -- and reveal just how much your partner means to you.

Hi Alice, thank you for taking the time to reply! I completely understand your intention to avoid overexplaining things—I think it’s a valid approach that can make the story feel more natural. That said, I feel like this might not have been the best moment to step away from providing a little more context. The “three months” conversation happened with Charlie two pages ago, and now he’s talking to Tori about his essay. Bringing up the “three months” comment so suddenly felt disconnected from the earlier moment. I found myself confused as to why he mentioned it out of nowhere. Even something as simple as a glance toward Michael or a small visual cue would have made it clearer that they were referring to him. Of course, this is just my opinion, and as the author, you absolutely have the prerogative to decide how you write your story. I just wanted to share my perspective because, honestly, it did leave me a bit confused. Thank you again for all your hard work on this story—I really appreciate it!

exactly the comment that triggered Nick! the problem is that it doesn't necessarily have to be "a bad day for Charlie" . Maybe he is just not hungry, but because of his history, this comment totally triggers Nick. he is very overprotective for better or for worse. hope there isn't more to it. ♥️♥️♥️

Two pages ago for us was 3 days ago. For someone who will read the comic as it's published, it will be like 30 seconds ago. We tend to forget that how we read the comic, page by page, is a veeery different experience in terms of flow as other people will experience it

I love the last panel of Charlie. Is that cinematic longing stare moment, mixed with the overwhelming feeling of having to accept change. In my head I like to think that Nick “spidey sense” kicked in when Charlie was looking at him rather than just listening in on his conversation.

These two need to have a real talk. Hopefully that's coming soon. I don't know that Charlie is denying food out of stress. He gets to not feel hungry and have that be OK. I think they are both thinking about Nick going away and Nick is focusing on Charlie's experience of that instead of his own feelings about being apart and Charlie is worried about how it will be for Nick because he knows Nick is focused on his experience (Charlie's) rather than his own feelings. Good time for a talk. :) Also, congratulations on 1700 amazing pages. :)

I can totally picture Tori thinking that long distance wouldn't affect her that much but then having issues. The thing is, I think that Charlie knows himself a bit more, so there is that. Also, Charlie and Nick can discuss what long-distance means for them. It is established in Nick and Charlie, that Charlie doesn't love snacks, so that isn't a biggie. (I am assuming that Nick got him something from the cafeteria and Charlie ate that.). And Nick, don't micromage Charlie's eating habits. I'm not a huge snack person either, not a biggie. And even if it is because he is a bit sad, as long as he is generally eating, that is fine. I think the worst possible thing that Nick could do right now, is make it some kind of a big deal. (Again, maybe Nick can encourage Charlie to talk to Geoff about how to manage eating when he is a bit stressed in other ways, but that is about it.) . I think at some point Nick will have a bit of a meltdown, and I'm hoping, it is not with other people, just Charlie, so they can talk properly, and maybe Nick can see someone (pretty please. This level of stress is what I went to therapy for, and it is just as important as the impatient care that Charlie received. ) I am REALLY starting to see where this might go. Also, can Nick hear Tori and Charlie's conversation? I mean, of course, Charlie is going to be sad to have his boyfriend away, but COMMUNICATION is really critical, not just ignoring it.

To me Charlie already clocked that three months is a long time when he asked why he hadn't seen Michael in a while. So when that question mark over his head appears as Tori walks away he knows what she's upset about, because he has the same problem with not seeing Nick for long periods of time. So when he goes over to her he uses talking about her essay as a way to ease into the conversation about long distance. The essay chat was to get that stress out of the way before he could get to the heart of checking up on how she's doing besides school stress.

I'm a bit lost in time. Are we still on sandwich controversy day? Did David come home yesterday? Regardless, I'm not sure if Charlie and Nick are thinking about their pending separation or Charlie's ED and Nick's reactions. But, hopefully a conversation will move some of those looks forward and bring some resolutions.

I agree that it’s probably still sandwich day (unless more time passed between lunch and the poor bullied kid than I thought), but it’s not 100% clear if just one night or several nights passed between the David day and headteacher/sandwich controversy day. I doubt it has been too much time either way.

passing on a snack of toast doesn’t instantly mean a relapse. if charlie’s relationship to food is getting to be more healthy, that means he’ll eat when he’s hungry and not when he isn’t. worrying about him for passing on one snack seems like borrowing trouble. ❤️

First of all, Alice, congratulations on 1700 fucking amazing pages! I just looked back at page 1 MEET and it just makes me tear up how much you have given us since then. I hope you celebrate this milestone today because it's really incredible!! The sequence of Charlie's expressions on PAGE 1700 are SOOO well done! First, he is (what he thinks anyways) making a casual comment to Tori, "I didn't realize..." and Tori, cloaking under her typical practical apathy, implies that the 3 months wasn't a big deal (I'm not buying the phones exist response, Tori Spring!) when clearly it WAS a big deal, judging from her downcast, solemn look in that second panel. Charlie is also so surprised at her abrupt "escape" from their conversation...he genuinely looks shocked and confused in the 3rd panel as Tori goes to make toast. And in panel 4, bless his heart, I feel like Charlie is REALIZING several things..."how have I been so distracted that I didn't even notice Michael had been away for THREE WHOLE MONTHS? Have I really not paid attention/checked in enough to what was happening (or more importantly what was NOT happening) in Tori's world? Between work and my Head Boy role, I have been awfully busy, but surely not that busy, right? But, if I missed this with Tori, what else have I missed?" As all this is running through his mind, a reflexive, "Nah, I'm good," automatically comes out, causing a very hyper-alert Nicolas Nelson to whirl his head away from tree decorating to cue in, as we simultaneously get a little bewildered Charlie snapping his head up to look at Nick in a "have I overlooked some things with Nick too..." way as more of the past few months of Nick's behavior are starting making more sense to Charlie...and then he sees Nick's face, which likely reminds him of the "sandwich incident" at school, AND also maybe (hopefully) reminds him that he and Nick will soon be APART, and that sucks...even if phones exist. (and I so appreciate how all this happens while Oliver and Michael remain obliviously hanging ornaments, as they should). Usually I don't mind waiting, but after this one, I cannot wait to turn the page to see what Alice has planned...

Interesting if Charlie will make a link to people in his life he may not be connecting with right now...like a certain hyper aware boyfriend. This adds another context to the whole situation. I feel there is a circle of worry going around. Nick and Charlie worrying about each other, and Charlie worrying about Tori, who is likely worrying about Michael being gone who is also likely stressed as is. Hopefully everyone can be relaxed for a little bit. And its amazingly easy how quickly 3 months can pass, and you not notice.

Everything being communicated here is being said with people's eyes. Tori is committing almost by accident, but Nick and Charlie are able to use each other's eyes to do a kind of telepathy that shows they are truly meant to be together.

The long distance thing doesn’t have to be so long. They could at least have a conversation about choosing uni’s that are at least close to the other. It’s not like either of them are choosing a field like astrophysics where only a certain # of schools would have to be the chosen one. Long distance doesn’t HAVE to be the only choice, but they aren’t even communicating at all. So sad to see. 😢
