😭 Nickkkkk buddy. The last panel is exactly like the volume 4 panels where Charlie is overthinking and avoiding stuff. Nick, you helped Charlie through all his stuff and brought him out of his shell, and now you can't even see (or don't want to see) that you're doing the exact same stuff he did to avoid talking. Charlie insisted he was fine hundreds of times, kissed you as a distraction hundreds of times ("can you just...kiss me again?"). He is going to know, does know, that you're doing exactly what he did. And you know how that turned out... He just needed support (and therapy!), so for the love of Nellie, can you please let him support you too?

Then the jaggered angular split of the top panel and the sort of crumbling away edge of the bottom panel feels like that reflects the fragility and complexity of Nick’s feeling too. I love the “spilt” panel approach at the top of the page, showing the connected but not exactly on the same page place Nick and Charlie are…we have Nick, literally warming up to Charlie’s caring touch (there’s that lighter color background glow🥰)as he also is STILL defaulting to trying to smile his way through it, starts to hear what Charlie is really saying. And on the other half, omg, has there ever been a warmer, more open, trusting expression than the one Charlie is wearing? (Alice, your art skills are killing me this volume, especially with their facial expressions🥹) Then we see it, in the third panel, when Nick finally fully hears Charlie, and realizes deep down that Charlie is right. He is hurting. He is masking…(even though he doesn’t know exactly about what all yet!). BUT, the last panel with the close up of wide eyed Nick and a very dark background whose border starts to dissolve…that one hurts. He’s right there, Nick…look at Charlie…he is your person, you’re safe with him, he is your home. Even if you don’t know what is wrong, just start talking, please, start letting even just a little out. So grateful for this storyline, even though my heart is hurting for Nick right now. It’s such an important and realistic side of mental health struggles to show…intentionally and lovingly done❤️‍🩹

I think Nick is going to feel likes he’s too “on the spot”- Charlie is asking him, right now, to explain his feelings, when I’m guessing Nick hasn’t even fully acknowledged or named them to himself yet. So it’s going to be really hard for Nick to just open up and share what’s been going on with him. I think he will either just release emotion (cry) or perhaps double down and diminish his feelings. But I think it’s at least an important first step. I think Charlie should let Nick know he’s noticed Nick has seemed like he’s struggling and Charlie wants to be there for Nick whenever he’s ready to open up about it.

Perfection on Charlie's part. I really loved that for now, he didn't bring up the sandwitch incident or that he feels like Nick is too focused on just being the perfect boyfriend. Which may be true, but I think starting with Nick's feelings first is so important. I was worried that Charlie may be mad, rather than concerned, and I'm really glad that at least for now, that isn't the case, Of course, if Nick skirts the issue, that may change, but that will be a different situation. I hope the last panel means that even though he may not quite know what is going on, Nick is ready to discuss the struggles he is going through. And please Jane or Olly, don't barge in!! (Since Jane is much more easygoing about overnights, I hope it is the same for closed doors.) And I did tear up at the last panel. Just start talking Nick!

alexa play “fake smile” by ariana grande 😔✊ ok but in all seriousness i rly hope nick at least tries to verbalize (i know it’s difficult & i hope neither of them needlessly gets frustrated) what’s going on w him. i rly think a wall has been kicked down. charlie told nick he saw right thru this facade, which nick thought no one had for MONTHS. the truth was, charlie saw thru it the entire time but initially waited for nick to come to him, but when he didn’t, charlie knew it was time. and if (and when) nick deflects, i hope that charlie will bring up these past instances from the last couple of (days? weeks? months?) that show just how off nick’s energy has been. it might be met by some excuses / backlash on nick’s end but it’s enough to prove the point. the page by page progression of this convo is truly grueling but i think it’s a good test in patience

This all shows so much emotional intelligence and maturity on Charlie’s part… this is the same day he got turned down for his pride club, had to stop bullying of someone who could have been him (& felt like he didn’t get the justice the kid deserved yet), and had his boyfriend baby him by running off to get him a sandwich he didn’t ask for. Oh and sitting with Tori talking about her being away next year! I mean, he should also be a bit of a mess right now, and has every right to make this about him, but bc he knows and loves Nick so deeply, and is just an amazing human, he is able to make this about Nick, and what must be going on with him right now instead of Charlie ♥️ he could have said ‘I hate that you got me that sandwich and always have to try and be my knight in armor’ or ‘I hate that you didn’t open up to me last night and I’ve got a lot going on right now too mister so let’s cut the BS please’ (ha you can see my projection all over this 😅). Instead he so sweetly makes it about Nick and what he must be going through/ he knows that’s why he’s been in such a daze recently. Wish I could be as empathic and sensible as these boys in my own relationships!

I have a feeling this will make Nick snap and will cause a commotion, he has held things for so long to protect Charlie and in order for him to try and adjust the new normal (the fact that he is leaving high school soon and will be eventually separated from Charlie when he gets accepted to his dream uni). I think he’s held a lot of things from when Charlie was suffering a lot from his eating disorder but also in saying that, from his own battles from his family, sexuality, everything. It’s like he could blow up at one point. Hormones, so fun.

This reminded me of the end of season 2 when Nick said to Charlie "We said that we will tell each other things", and them made the promise in paris to talk to each other when they had stuff going on🥺 I really hope Nick talks to Charlie, he should know that Charlie would support him and be there for him😭 But i'm also nervous since Nick has been through a lot and held a lot of his feelings in for so long..

Well.. if Nick flashes back to something that is preventing him from talking to Charlie, at least we will start to understand what is going on in his head. His concerns may be about Charlie at the surface which I do think they should talk about in a loving and honest way. But, yeah, there are deeper foundational issues afoot leading him to behave this way. I hope to see Sarah tuned in soon.

Same. I’m re-reading vol 4 with my son and we just read journey, where Nick shares how he’s been feeling a lot of anxiety while Charlie’s away, but it really helps to talk with his mum and also with his mates. Made us stop and note how it doesn’t seem like he’s talking to anyone about any of his worries ♥️ hope he remembers how much talking with someone helps. So complicated with Charlie bc of how the things impacting Nick ultimately impact Charlie too.. could be a lot of fear of saying the wrong thing & hurting feelings ♥️
