Oh we're really going back to the root of the issue...

I may regret asking if it ignites a big debate in the comments but... @ any NATIVE French speakers, please let me know if there's anything you'd change about the translation here! I couldn't figure out what would be a good choice for 'come on', and also I am just relying on my extremely basic French skills + Google 😅

Joey Paradise

Welp... as if I did not dislike Stephane enough already... (even if I wouldn't want anything to do with David either...)

Lolli98

Flashback...omg, that's soo sad. If parents only knew what they can do with one wrong sentence. (Being a parent myself it scares me a lot). But Nick, you know that Charlie isn't your sh... dad. You can open up to him and even cry.🥺 Thank you Alice for taking us to the bottom of Nick's issues. I already love him, but I also love to really get to know him.💙

Merel

Alice how dare you 😭

abbie

god. i cannot stand nicks dad

ACxo

Oh Nick 🥺so is that why he holds in his emotions since he’s worried if he cries other people will leave like his dad did?

ruthie.von

Poor little baby Nicholas 🫂

Brittney

Oh wow... I wasn't expecting that. Poor Nick, it's okay Nick, you can let it all go now, no one will hurt you

Klara Dalgren

Oh Nick 😭💔 This breaks my heart. But loving the storyline!!

soph

oh my lord. alice. 😭😭😭😭

Shin__

Nick, my heart just got in piece.

Sarah Jacobs

😭😭😭😭😭 oh Nicky! Traumatic parent flashbacks are the worst 😞

Katie H

I was not emotionally prepared for this flashback 🥹😭 And the broken panels for the flashbacks shows just how much Nick is struggling 💔

Mikey Sams-Barnes

What an insight into an often unseen aspect of Nick’s childhood. Beautifully depicted. Haunting. Wow.

Laura Vetri

Poor baby Nick :( I’d use “allez” for come on

Sara

oh im in tears

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

Fvck you, Stephane!!! Omg nooooo little baby Nicky 💔💔💔 I'm so glad he has Charlie in his life now and forever. Stephane better not be invited to the Narlie wedding 🤬

Lissie

Oh no 🥺 Nick needs all the love

Roarrrry

😭😭😭😭😭

Rosie

Ohhh nooooo 🥺😢😔 This is just heartbreaking 💔

Irem7

Omg my baby nooo😭

Anne Marie

Oh Nick. As much as this hurts to see, I’m glad he’s not running from the memory right now. I hope he opens up to Charlie, not just about this, but about other things as well. Hopefully this is the start of some much needed healing for Nick.

Desi23

Oh my lord!, this panel is so heartbreaking!

ama

ALICE OSEMAN HOW DARE YOU 😭😭😭😭💔

Marine 🍂

I would say : " Je ne viendrais plus ici si tu pleures à chaque fois "

Chris

May I suggest « Je ne veux pas venir ici si c’est juste pour te voir pleurer » :)

Suse

Oof 😥

Lindsey Hyde

Wow. Didn’t expect his thoughts to go back so far!

Amber Elle

Hi Alice, you're french is very nice, just the "Come on" in french we say "allez" but your text is perfect ❤️

Katie H

my heart is breaking for Nick right now 💔😭

Deepblueskies

Translation suggestion: je ne vais pas venir ici si c’est pour t’entendre pleurer [edited for closeness to English text]

BEL

In French, it would be “allez, arrête de pleurnicher” “je ne viendrai plus te voir si tu pleures tout le temps”. Hey, stop sniveling. I won’t come back if you cry all the time

Christie

Oh Nick 😔😢

Chloe ♡

i want to hug little nick 🥺

Merel

Oh no 😭 Nick has learned from a young age to suppress his emotions so as not to upset others. He must believe it's his fault his dad left, and now he's scared he will also drive Charlie away if he's 'too much'. The final panel suggests to me that Nick is only fully starting to realise that now. Childhood trauma is rough and often hides under the surface...

Synz

NOOOOOOOOOO MY SON

Enara M

it is really sad how we can carry a feeling with us our whole life, just because something someone said when we were young, poor nick🥲 i can definitely relate

Darren🍂

Once again i am ready to throw hands w/ Nick’s dad. Ugh

Taylor Kristine Woods

Once again reaffirming my opinion that Stephane is the woooooorst

Philippe Vallotti

Heartbreaking! In French, I would say: "Je ne veux pas venir (ici) si tu ne fais que pleurer !" "Ici" is superfluous as "venir" implies "here/ici" but it's still used.

Lou ✨

🇫🇷 french native here !! "Arrête" is great for "come on" but for the sentence on the right, it's maybe better to use "je ne viendrais plus si tu passes ton temps à pleurer" ! xoxo 💋

Vantacy_1912

Ok now we are thrown back to the tiny Nick diary all over again, or even before, which means heart broken into million pieces, AGAIN!

dpfw

In the name of fairness, I bet that David got that from Stephane before as well as after the divorce. Then because Nick's five and David's nine Nick's tears flow more freely and Sarah focuses on the child who's obviously distressed and David feels like he needs to bottle it up because "Mum has her hand full with Nicky" and by the time he finally can't keep it in anymore it manifests as acting out instead of expressing his emotions in a healthy way. Not a justification, but an explanation/theory

Lauren

OH NO NICHOLAS 😭😭😭😭😭

Francis Larrigan

Would Zut Alors be appropriate An expression of surprise, annoyance, impatience etc, supposedly typical of the French.

Carrie Lindley

Oh my god, the mom in me is having a visceral fight response here. I want to go full mama bear right now. And while I can’t help with your French translation question, I can say with certainty that the French for “toxic male asshole” is Stéphane. Grrrrrrr!

Jo

Ooof, the accuracy is gutting. Beautiful work here on all fronts.

Mel

Oh, Nicky :(

Nikki

Excuse my language but FUCK I wish I could reach through the screen and give Nick a hug 🥺

Ania W.

I didn't expect this at all 😮 But I'm delighted that you delve so deep into Nick's mind. And damn it is very painful 💔

Caro

oh alice you just ripped my heart, and i hope that nick talk with charlie and understand that his past won’t change, but he don’t need to be afraid anymore, because he will never be alone and people love him exactly the way he is

Makeda

that’s the cutest crying picture omg

Valentine Entzmann

Native French here ! For the sentence I would have said : Allez, arrête de pleurer Nicholas. For the second : je ne viendrais pas si tu pleures. Something like that :)

DianaD

Poor Nick!

Emily Scott

Wow i didn't expect this, but love seeing this page by page. Poor Nick!

Lauren

Also that's SO CLEVER the way you've illustrated the French underneath the English ❤️❤️❤️

reece

Oh nickkkkk :c

Marie Bouthillette

Native French speaker here! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Here you say "arrête" twice in a row, so I would maybe change it to "Allez, arrête de pleurer Nicholas!" for a better translation of "come on". Also, I would switch "Je voudrais" to "je voudrai" so the verb tense is a bit more accurate. "Je voudrais pas venir" means "I wouldn't want to come" and "Je voudrai pas venir" means "I won't want to come". But obviously you always know what's best! Focusing on grammar here so I don't start crying over baby Nick in this page!! 🥲🩷

Barb

it's allowed to cryyyy😭, to release the inner tension😭😭

Caro

and thank you for the breakdown on work, in a monday

KatieS

Heartbreaking!😭

Laura

Nick deserves so much love! ❤️ Stephané is the worst dad ever.

OSM

Oh Nick, I really feel this. So much of my childhood was someone telling me not to cry. As if it was something I had control of.

Philippe Vallotti

If you want it to be the same word count: Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu vas juste pleurer ! (But it's a bit less natural)

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

Poor Nick has been repressing these traumas so much and seeing him so vulnerable makes me want to hug him and never let him go 😭🥺

ellen de Ruiter

Oh this breaks my heart 💔 Alice you are amazing how you can convey emotion on paper. Thank you!

ashley ✨

oh stephane when i catch you

Noemiette

Mmmh I would say more "Allez, arrête de pleurer !" For the second one it's more tricky and the only translations i can come up with are a little long 🤔 "Pourquoi venir si c'est juste pour t'entendre pleurer ?" Maybe. And if you want him to be extra mean use "chouiner" instead of "pleurer"

Charlie

I did not expect to see that today. Alice what are you doing to us! 😭😭😭 The effects of parental divorce are utterly heartbreaking and you’re totally right Alice, they are often hidden and covered over by puberty self discovery, until that is all things settle and they creep out in unexpected ways. 🫂🫂

C 🐝

Omg, Nick 😢. His face in the last panel, his eyes… such hurt in his eyes.

2catlovers

And this is where our lovely golden retriever puppy got his nose whacked… poor Nick. Feeling like love being offered is dependent on his behaviour as a child and now he can’t break that as an almost-adult. This will be really hard. And seeing his inner nakedness is mirrored by his outer toplessness - he looks extra-vulnerable. Hugs are required!

Cody

It was not my plan to be sobbing today

Brin

🥺

Axel

Hi so in french it's more about : - c'est bon arrête de pleurer nicholas - je n'aurais plus envie de venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer

Marine 🍂

" Je ne voudrais pas venir ici si tu veux juste pleurer " is grammatically incorrect. Don't worry Alice, French is really difficult to translate

Bevulio

Hey! Professional translator here. In terms of how we'd say it in French, it could be more "Stop it" rather than "come on". Come on, in terms of disbelief, would be more "Arrête" than "Allez" (which is used more like a prompt like "let's go!")

M R

Unprocessed trauma oof...😮‍💨 Fear of abandonment, repeating the feeling that was left inside when Nick's dad left, dang.... I also like the extra layer that he remembers everything in French, even though he may speak it fluently, it may prove as another barrier for Nick to put what is going on with him into words. LOVE WHERE THIS IS GOING ALICE!!!!💔

Anne-Lise Torre

I'm native French, may I suggest, few slightly changes : First part : "Allons Nicholas, arrête de pleurer!" "Je ne vois pas l'intérêt de venir, si c'est pour te voir pleurer"

Deepblueskies

Agreed on “allez”, but the current “arrête” is also good to show the annoyed tone

Tori-Gaye Atterbury

Please 🥹 my heart can’t even handle the suspense. I can already tell this volume will be full of the feels. Our boys 🫶🏽🫶🏽

Katie

Poor sweet Nick 😭

E

Oh no. Little Nick looks so sad, he looks like the 😭 emoji but even sadder. :(

EllieRLM

Hey ! Native French here ! In that context, you can translate "Come on" with "Allez" or if you want Stephane to sound a bit meaner "C'est bon" which could be translate back to " Stop, that's it" or "Enough".

Joey Paradise

Of course. Without going too deeply down the rabbit hole, I grew up in a less than ideal setting - particularly related to the paternal, and am the eldest of five. It’s widely fascinating to look back and observe what we each absorbed and each rejected and how vastly it varies between us. I can only discuss that with one sister, not the other three siblings. At a certain point you have to take responsibility for yourself and battle the demons and you can’t keep giving someone the “get out of jail free card”, but some people also just don’t have the capacity to stare down the demons, even with lots of support. Once again, a storyline hits close to home and I look forward to seeing this unfold.

Audrey Mauclair

Hi ! I’m French and you can say « Allez ! Arrête de pleurer Nicholas » for the first sentence and « Je n’ai pas envie de venir si tu vas faire que pleurer » for the second one it’s more French :D

Marine 🍂

"Je ne reviendrais plus ici si tu pleures à chaque fois" = i wouldn't come back here if you cry everytime (i'm here)

Noemiette

"Pourquoi venir si c'est juste pour t'entendre pleurer" would translate more to "Why come if it's just to hear you cry ?" though

gabs

as a native french speaker i would say "je ne veux pas revenir te voir si tu fais que pleurer" if you want it to sound more like a real conversation instead of "je ne voudrais" (:

Julia Schmidt

I know this is sad but im so happy we are getting insight into nicks mind

Rose Arsenault

French canadien here! And I also feel that it’s really the second sentence that could be change to something like that! It’s mean that he won’t be coming again if Nick keeps crying.

olli

I absolutely love that were getting to know more of Nick's background, and it's beautifully done :,) I want to give him the biggest hug

William Denoyer

Hello Alice, I’m a native French speaker, and I may help you here with the translations. For « come on », I would say here in French : « Allons Nicholas ! » (or « Allons allons ! », if you don’t want to put the name here) followed by « Arrête de pleurer ». Then for the next sentence, I think it would be more : « Je ne veux pas venir ici si c’est pour que tu pleures !! » (based on the sentence you choose in english). It’s just a suggestion, as you proposed, and as I understand the intention you put there :) Also, thank you Alice for everything you put to this story, it’s being amazing so far <3

Diana

Oh man, I feel this panel SO hard.

Noemiette

Oh you know, even as native speakers, our grammar is a freaking struggle 🤣🤣

moon

my heart 🥲🥲 also, the french is actually pretty good! i’m not totally sure, but another way of saying what stephane says could be: “j’en n’ai pas envie de venir ici si tu veux juste pleurer!”. take my suggestion with a grain of salt though 😅

HLMac88

Ugh poor baby. I really hope Charlie can get him to start to open up. He feels like he needs to hide his emotions because of his past trauma. 😢 Poor thing, he’s so kind and caring, ugh. This is so reminiscent of my other half. Beautiful souls on the outside but the inner turmoil they experience is awful. I know Charlie will know how to best support him. 🩷 I love these boys.

Carly Louise

Aww Nicky 😩 He didn't stop coming because of your tears, he stopped coming because he's a useless twat ❤️‍🩹

bluefern

❤️‍🩹

Cody

All of the emotions in the last panel with Nick are raw and powerful. Wow

Marine 🍂

"Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu vas juste pleurer" , personne ne dirait ça en français. Ta première traduction était meilleure

Noemiette

Welp good luck to you selecting a translation for the 2nd one cause we are all giving you different versions of it 😂😅

Diana

Can confirm as an adult who hates crying because her mother used to get angry every time I cried as a kid.

laura

ARE YOU READY TO DIE STÉPHANE FOURNIER?! 🔪

ucfnurse

Ohhhh Nick!!😯😔🙌💓❣️🍃🍂🥀☔️☂️🫖✌️🕊️☮️

Gabrielle St-Onge

Hi ! I am from Quebec, here we would say « Franchement » for Come on!

Ania W.

Stephane is clearly not fit to be a parent. Turn away from your crying son? Selfish damn bastard.

Gregory Toner

Ohhh … wow I didn’t see this coming. 🥺

Claudine

This breaks my heart!

Ariel

😭😭 oh Nick

EllieRLM

If I may there's also a problem with the 2nd sentence. The tense is wrong, the first part must be in present time : "Je ne veux pas venir ici" and the second part sounds a bit weird to a French hear (or maybe just me) becauce the verb is wrong, it sounds like Nick actually WANTS to cry. I'll phrase it more like this : "Si tu ne fais que pleurer". So the complete sentence would be : "Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer." And whoever it is phrase, it make me hate Stephane ever more !

ali !!

my first language is french!! for the translation I'd go with “Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer” since the current one reads as “I wouldn't want to come here if you just want to cry”. I hope this helps and I can't wait to see what happens next!!

Jade

Native French speaker here! I think the closest way to translate "Come on" here would be "Enfin". The second part doesn't feel very natural tho, I would probably translate it as "Je ne viens pas ici poir te voir pleurer" (slightly different meaning from the way you phrased it in English but it feels more natural 😊)

Loren Marie 🦋

nick get behind me we’re gonna go fight stephané

Ellen🌈✨

not for the first or last time, i want to jump into the page Blue’s Clues style and give Nick a hug

Megan Chen

this is so heartbreaking—nick really has so much going on underneath the surface. i’m wondering if at this moment, he’s so scared to cry and break down in front of charlie because he’s thinking “will he leave?” I hope he’ll let charlie in 💖

Megan Chen

nick therapy arc 😐⁉️⁉️

Katya818

Oh my heart! 💔💔💔 Poor Nick! Talk to Char! He won't reject you!

Noemiette

We are asking ourselves that question everyday xD. There are so many levels of speaking, how casual or formal, spoken or written version of french etc

Ulises

Poor Nick 🥺 oooo when I catch you stéphane 😡

Jordan

Ok so extra sad bc he’s not even wailing here - when a kid is sniffling and hiccuping amidst the crying I feel like that’s usually when they are trying to stop crying and can’t 😭 so it’s like he’s trying to do what his dad wants but can’t and that makes this even more heartbreaking to me 💔 we all need the comforting Charlie hug after this lol

Justin S.

Oooof…Nick…🥺 how I relate to this

Calista

French native here ! I would say "Je veux pas venir ici si tu vas juste pleurer" which is more in the present of "I don't want to come here if you're just going to cry" but its also less "kind". and more harsh to hear as a kid. Another translation that would be more literal to me would be "Je veux pas venir ici si c'est juste pour te voir pleurer". it's a little long but it does mean "I don't want to come here if it's only to see you cry"

Ai Bui

ALICE THIS HURTS

Chris

Having a toxic father can turn you into a David or a Nick but it’s way more challenging and it’s impressive how kind sweet sensitive altruist Nick has become despite Stéphane

Olivia

this is so heartbreaking 💔

elea munch

french native speaker here!! i’d say "si tu ne fais que pleurer" instead of "si tu veux juste pleurer" :))

Loveislove

Holy shit - I was not expecting the deep dive!! Poor Nick - Stephane you absolute piece of shit. This also makes me understand and empathize with David a little more. I hope this is a topic that Nick can broach without fear with Charlie. He can tiptoe in on this and begin to explore. I firmly believe Sarah has got to be a part of this conversation and would love to see David included as well. Some healing is needed and it doesn't need to include Stephane - he has done enough. Nick is such a gentle soul and so is Charlie, I just hope for a partnership on this.

Noemiette

Hahaha xD but the translation depends so much on how formal he is. Like people suggesting Allons instead of Allez. Which can work for some stricter types of parents but most parents will use Allez 🤪

Antje Mertz

Doesn't French also differ depending on the location, i.e. Parisian French is different to that of other parts of the country. Since Stephane lives in Paris, I would opt for Parisian French. Or maybe for the French spoken in the part that he's from originally. I may be too picky, so feel free to ignore. 😅

MJ

Omg my heart 😢💔

Bethan Russell

OH DADDYS ISSUES! Nick I feel you ❤️

Philippe Vallotti

C'est plus rigide, mais c'est pour garder le même nombre de mots... Sinon, "Je ne vais plus venir si tu passes ton temps à pleurer." C'est un peu une surtraduction (plus = I won't ever) mais bon

KCav

French speaker here: "Arrête, arrête de pleurer, Nicolas" works well/sounds right, and captures the "Come on" you were going for. But "Je ne voudrais pas venir ici si tu veux juste pleurer" doesn't work as spoken French. "J'viendrais plus si tu vas pleurer tout le temps" sounds more natural, but it does carry a slightly stronger implication of "I will stop coming back" (if you just cry all the time).

Lex

As someone who speaks French Canadian, it is very different! Some of the words I use do not translate

Loveislove

I get the feeling there wasn't only one wrong sentence from that dad....🤔

William Denoyer

Pas mal ta traduction :) J’aime bien l’idée du chouiner, ça accentue encore plus l’idée que le père ne sait pas du tout comment s’y prendre… J’aurais plus mis « Allons » que « Allez »

elisa

a better translation would be « allez, arrête de pleurer nicholas » and then « je ne vais plus avoir envie de venir si tu ne fais que pleurer » and also i guess we’ll have our hearts broken in the following days 🥲

Alexandra B

Haha french is also hard for native speakers 😅 as a native french speaker, for the come on part, you could say: "allez Nicholas, arrête de pleurer" And for the other part, I would have said: "Je ne viens pas ici pour te voir pleurer" or "Je ne veux pas venir si c'est pour te voir pleurer" but I feel like the first one is more natural even if it's not the literal translation. 🤔

Géraldine Prévost

Native speaker, to be informal (and the way my parents would say it :)) I would rephrase it a bit : “Allez, arrête Nicholas!Je viens pas ici pour t’entendre pleurer” Or “Allez, arrête Nicholas! Je ne viendrai plus si c’est pour te voir pleurer ”

Noemiette

Bah le "Allons" ca sonne beaucoup plus "sophistiqué" je trouve, et vu comme il parle dans la série le "Allez", je trouve, colle mieux

Merel

The French have flocked to the comment section 😂

Gregory Toner

So, I have wondered for some time if David’s hostility towards Nick had to do with their father… if young David overheard this kind of conversation he might have blamed Nick for the loss of his father … Stephane really is becoming a major villain here 🤨

KCav

Alex B, that's the best version so far! "Je ne viens pas ici pour te voir pleurer." I couldn't figure out how to work in the "ici" without sounding stilted, but you did it :)

William Denoyer

Franchement, les deux vont bien en vrai ahah 😂 Au vu du nombre de propositions, je pense que « Allez » va être choisi 😇

Beth Yoshida

My hatred for Stephane has increased even more. Hate him with a burning passion

Loveislove

Ahh - Sarah...did Stephane hypnotize you into marriage or something?

Lolli98

No, obviously not. But this one seems to have manifested itself in Nick.

Jennifer Paddock

Well, I was not expecting that! Wow... just... poor Nick! I really hope he is brave enough to push past Stephane's toxic crap (like he did at the dinner) and open up to Charlie here. Someone hug that boy STAT!

aaronhotchnerswhore

I'm bout to turn into a unsub and personally put Stephane into a wood shredder 🥰

Jo S

This is so real! So much of our experience is formed by parental ignorance in dealing with upsetting situations. I do relate to Nick in this instance and the emotional trauma of going through a parent’s breakup. It will help you to relate and support people in the future Nick! :) Remember Charlie is your soul mate! He loves you and only wants to support you! Thank you for showing Alice how previous trauma affects us as adults 🥹❤️

Samantha White

This is even more heartbreaking with the context of Nick on the recent mini comic.

Salome

Native speaker with a degree in translation here. For the first part, « Allez, arrête de pleurer ! » would work very well. For the second part, it depends on the context and intent. The closest translation would be “Je ne suis pas venu pour te voir pleurer.” It is pretty “neutral” but it could be adjusted depending on what the emphasis should be. Is Stephane implying that he will not come anymore if Nick cries every time ? If so, « Je ne viendrai plus si c’est pour te voir pleurer (à chaque fois). » “Pleurnicher” can also be used instead of “pleurer.” It would imply that Stephan kind of looks down on Nick for crying - kind of “boys don’t cry” vibes.

Glenn

You have really good insight. Stephane's behavior is more than likely responsible for how both Nick and David came out. The four year difference in age could explain their relationship with each other. Nick and David really need to work things out between each other. This could also explain why David said people always leave; Nick might fear the David's rright.

Jessica Richards

As much as this hurts, I'm glad we are starting to get to the root of Nick's anxiety. My bestie and I have been rewatching and rereading the whole series since discovering it earlier this year, and we clocked Nick's anxiety early on (from both of us having some experience in that area ourselves). We're invested in seeing Nick get some help and healing, similar to Charlie's arc.

Maisie

Oh sweetheart :( this made me tear up - this poor boy 😭

Kit

Me getting ready to board the eurostar to Paris and kick down Stephane's door!! (But also bravo Alice on a realistic and heartbreaking backstory)

Noemiette

Ooh I like your version ! I suggested chouiner but pleurnicher works well too (and is a tiny bit less harsh while still being mean) and it would avoid repeating "pleurer" twice in the page I think overall it would be better to select a french version that has the desired meaning, and then adjust the english version

Sof

native speaker here. i’d say : « Allez arrête Nicholas! Je ne viens pas ici pour te voir pleurer »

Beam Bugge

my theory is that he was nice before they had children, but his awful treatment of the boys was what made her see him in a different light

Laury Pouliot

You could translate come on with "ça suffit". It means that's enough". Not exactly the same meaning but it sounds rude and fit with the character in my opinion. We say that in french. "Ça suffit! Arrête de pleurer."

Katha

I was not expecting that! 💔 I really like that we can get a fuller picture of Nick. Like yes, he has a really great (almost perfect?) mother, but that’s not the whole story. And yes, he is in many ways a “perfect” boyfriend, but he is also a nuanced person with his own traumas, struggles, experiences… and he is still so young.

Ashley Robinson

Don’t have suggestions on French as an American. However, sitting here trying to remember a time Nick actually cried while struggling. Knowing there are points where it very much should have been the case. 🥹

Joni

We’re getting to the root of why Nick has always put on a facade to hide who he really is around his mates and stuff. I relate to Nick so much here, I have a dad who left when I was young and our relationship is strained to this day (I love him, but being with him and talking to him is emotionally painful). Trauma like this stays with you for a very long time…unfortunately. I can honestly say therapy helps! I hope Nick is open to trying it, I know Charlie would be supportive. And so would Sarah. Also Nick needs to remember this is Charlie he’s talking to right now, he can cry, he has before, and Charlie won’t make him shut down those emotions.

Valeria Rodriguez

Damn (whisper voice). That is way deep and perfect 😢 in connecting childhood wounds causing later in life behavior patterns to protect that wound. Whew 😥 it’s a lot to process because this one page has cleared up what counseling has been trying to get me to understand. Let’s not label our thoughts as good or bad and instead let’s look at what are they trying to protect.

Neenie

My group therapist likes to refer to thoughts as helpful or unhelpful

Brandy78

Was NOT prepared 😢

Beam Bugge

well shit i was not prepared for THAT 🫠

Claire

Heartbreaking - 💔😞💔

Beam Bugge

this comment section has turned into a debate on how to most accurately emotionally abuse your kid in french

Neenie

Damn! You’re so right though, I used to fight with my mom, and my sister would be crying because of both of us. Luckily for me, my sister isn’t an asshole

Evergreen

WOW my own deadbeat dad never said it outright like that, but his leaving was definitely my first lesson in holding in my emotions. Between watching my parents fight and thinking everything would be better if they weren’t letting themselves get so angry, to holding in my own feelings so I wouldn’t burden my parents with more than they already had to deal with, to recognizing that my dad wanted our few weekends together to be fun and lighthearted (which I now know was to make parenting easier for him), I learned that everyone who mattered seemed to like and tolerate me better - and feel better themselves - when I was just “happy.” I’m middle-aged and still working my way out of those knots. Nick has always been the character I relate to most, but this just took it to a whole new level.

Ava

😭😢💔

jubilee

This image just shot me in the chest

toneelspeler

as much as this is a painful storyline i really enjoy the way that the miscommunication is set up to be. it's so understandable that the way nick and charlie grew up as individuals in their household and what they went through has them acting and thinking a certain way, that in this case might be a little recipe for disaster, but also will teach them so much about the other and what kind of work will go into maintaining and actively choosing for their relationship time and time again! it's really insightful storytelling!

Alice P

That’s good! I was going to suggest changing “voudrais” to “veux,” but this suggestion is perfect!!

Evergreen

And it’s DEFINITELY worth noting that I buried my feelings so deeply that I didn’t even see them most of the time. I believed I was just fine and happy when I wasn’t. It didn’t feel like I was faking anything because I didn’t know there were meaningful feelings down there to hide - I was just doing it automatically, before they became fully conscious. So I totally understand why Nick isn’t talking yet. It’s very possible that he really still doesn’t realize there’s anything there to talk about.

Flor D. la Peña🍂

I’m a French teacher Alice and I agree with Salome’s comment ! Also, poor Nick my heart can’t take it 💔

Alice P

Great suggestions! It really does depend on exactly what the dad is trying to say… Is he saying, “I am not going to come here if all you’re going to do is cry” or “I don’t want to come here if you cry all the time,” etc.

RCM

I have had my fingers on the keyboard for several minutes, trying to find the right first words to convey what this page evokes...it is all such a perfect portrayal of the many, repeated "little" moments that have all added up over time creating the big mental health traumas that Nick has carried since his young kiddo days...I love the way Alice drew this really hard flashback like a fucked up speech bubble...it feels especially relevant as current Nick cannot find words to describe the uncertainty, insecurity, lack of self (who even am I?), anxiety he is feeling...these broken, fragmented images are powerful, and are exactly how Nick has internalized how he sees himself, never as a whole person, but in these bits and pieces, viewed through a lens of how he related to or had any relevant importance to other people, that he subtly absorbed over and over: "I'm with this friend group who aren't really awesome but one day I will find my best friend," "my mum makes me feel happy and I want to do what makes her happy too because sometimes she seems sad," "Dad was probably stressed from all the work pressure, right? Surely he cares about me? I will play rugby. He likes that." "David is such a dick but we used to have good times, right? I see that picture on the wall every time I go upstairs...I have to try to be nicer," "I want to be the perfect boyfriend to Charlie because he is so special to me," "Kent is closer so it would really be better for Charlie and mum if I went there..." Nick, a very empathetic kind, loving, people pleaser, learned early on through these very cruel messages (like the one caught in his flashback) of emotional insensitivity that he was only worth being around if he acted like his dad (or his brother, or even some of his first "friends") needed him to act, which included NOT showing his feelings, NEVER talking things out, but rather burying the WHOLE HIM, and just bringing out the bits and pieces needed to safely interact with others in any given moment. Now, Charlie came along and shook that up and woke up that WHOLE Nick, but as we all know, "love cannot cure a mental illness," (BUT IT SURE HELPS!)...this trauma runs deep (I cannot even imagine Stephane's childhood...I know he had a soft spot somewhere that made Sarah fall in love with him, but damn...the toxic masculinity is strong with him!), and sweet Nick's broken look in the bottom panel shows the depth of his unused voice regarding himself. But this could be the first baby step to healing...c'mon, Nick!

Lynn

If we get a season 4 I can’t wait to see Joe and Kits growth as actors. I especially can’t wait to see Kit play out a different side of Nick ❤️ Alice, you really are the most emotionally intelligent person xx

Dippity_Dip

Oh. My god. I thought it read “I’m not going to come in there if you’re just going to cry” the first time and then I reread and OH MY GOD????? I’m not going to come HERE like nick blaming his emotions for his dad being a deadbeat holy shit??? Oh my god??? Emotionally devastated on a bisexual Monday call that the next best fall out boy single

Kassie K Wilson

Oh no… 😥 it’s worse than just university and David being a dick… this is some deep seated emotional trauma…😭🥺😭 I was unprepared 😟😟😟

Rmb

These pages have been wonderful, but all the amazing story and character development has left me sitting around, waiting for updates like a fat little troll

Fauzi Hamadeh

Oh, poor Nick. I just want to give him a hug.

RCM, perfect analysis as always. Please continue to work alongside Alice while the rest of us cry 😢

Olivier Caudron

The literal translation of your sentence is: "Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu vas être en train de pleurer." It is wordy. Therefore, I would translate it: "Allez, arrête de pleurer Nicholas. Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu pleures tout le temps." I suggest "tout le temps" because it indicates the continuity in time as the present continues in English (are going to).

I feel like the family conversation should be the safest one for Nick to open up about and have with Charlie. Charlie has met Stephane and Nick has already stood up to his father and begun to process their relationship and think about some boundaries. This still leaves difficult topics like Nick's feelings about his identity, his future, his goals and dreams, his individuality, his trauma from Charlie's mental health journey and how it still affects him, leaving for uni, his fears and hopes about their relationship...tip meet iceberg.

Elspeth Fougere

Urgggg Abaaaaannndddoooooonnnnnmeeeeeennnt!!! I was not prepared 😭😭😭 This is brilliant, it explains nicks self reliance despite having such a kind mum, and also his determined loyalty and persistent nurturing with charlie, and refusal to let go of those he has chosen to befriend and love

Charlie

Watching Alice liking all the French translations is hilarious. Mainly because they are all different. 😂😂😂 Good luck to you Alice, I think at this point there is no right answer 🤭🤭🤭

Margaux

French person here ! I would say : “Allez ! Arrête de pleurer. Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer. ”

Elfi

Ok, I wasn't expecting that and it made me cry. Once again a page that hurts so much. It's just so realistic, so relatable.

Elena

Oh no, Nick has - unconsciously - learnt in these kind of situations with his dad, that he's not allowed to express his true feelings! 😞 So that is also one reason, why it's so hard for Nick to talk to Charlie about his real struggles. 😟 And I think it must be even harder for Nick, to get the awareness of what his true feelings actually are/mean, when you think you have to repress all your true feelings all the time.

hollie

i need to hug him :(

Larisa

Ok, I have my knives and my pitchfork... WE LEAVE FOR FRANCE AT DAWN! I want to have words with Stephane 😡

brie

ouch!

Miles.dials

Oh it’s breaking even my cold black pointy heart. Give that kid a hug!!!

Scott Whittall

And the layers begin to peel off. Possibly a suppressed memory bubbling up during this moment or more likely, a constant underlying reminder for Nick that people do not leave if you are a good, sweet, quiet boy. Millions of hours of therapy have been logged due to the colossal failings of deadbeat dads. Take it from a kid who was absolutely terrified of his father throughout childhood, holding it in and putting on a brave, happy face, eventually leads you to a very dark place. Please, Nick, now is the time to break free from your dad's inadequacy as a parent. None of his abhorrent behavior was your fault. Please give Char the chance to emphatically remind you, that people who love do not abandon. Your soulmate is not going to run away if you are not perfect. And, just in case this is hovering around that heavy heart of yours, Going to Uni is not abandoning Charlie and your mum. You are nothing like your father. Char, please introduce Geoff and Nick.

CinD

My heart breaks for Nick and any child that is told to bottle up their feelings (especially little boys). 💔 I’m glad he had Sarah as a mom but I can imagine little him trying to be the best son for her also so that she doesn’t leave him behind like his father 😭 The novella is starting to make more sense to me he finally felt “I get to be myself 100% at Uni” and then… well you know 🥺

Sandrine

As a French person I concur with this. The other translations are correct but so mouthful for a French speaker. This one feels real.

Sandrine

Only variation would be “allons” instead of “allez” which sounds more like reproach imo

Maddy

I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE LOOKED AT THE PAGE TODAY 😭😭😭😭 (SOBBING RN)

Kristen

Well my heart just broke! We know that his dad has been part of his journey, but you never know what’s truly resting under the surface pain. I just want to hug him! 😢

Catherine

I am a French native and this version seems excellent to me! Ah, the beauty of French, but also its difficulty. Several words to say the same thing technically, but in reality, these words don't all have the same equivalence and scope. It's not always easy to choose the right one. Thank you for being so careful in choosing the right well-translated words Alice :-) "Je ne viendrai plus si c’est pour te voir pleurer à chaque fois'" … This illustrates well why Nick feels this need to show that he's always doing fine, even though it's false.

emily

OH NICK 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Julie

I hate that asshole.

Abi

What a manipulative little fecker he is really. That’s a horrible thought for Nick to shoulder wondering if he drove his dad away. And we can all imagine who caused him to get upset in the first place 💔

Olav Gehle

Our Nick has built up such thick walls around him because if his stupid Father, that he can’t just slip it off, it takes time to do that (speaking from my own experience, I be still in this process)

Jodie KH

Heart breaking, I hope Nick can open up to Charlie 💔

el

stéphane count your days because when i get my HANDS on you…

Rose Diamond10

Imposter syndrome is real. Especially for someone who is involved with a partner who has baggage of their own. I’m so proud of Nick for starting to peel back the layers and validate his own trauma. And I’m proud of you for being strong enough to acknowledge your pain as well. This leads to healing.

Frances

Oh no this is heartbreaking…. Unfortunately I can relate 😢

Lusi

This is heartbreaking💔 😭😭😭💔 (((((((Nicky)))))) I hope he knows that Charlie will never leave him because he's crying or be vulnerable. If any, he will love him even more... Talk to him! ❤

Salome

Thank you ! “Chouiner” and “pleurnicher” both mean whining / crying like a baby. ☺️ That being said, I feel that the use of “chouiner” might be more limited to certain regions / age groups. I have the impression that “pleurnicher” is more widely used, I think.

Ignacia

OOOOF this is a painful one 😮‍💨

lady Clare

French teacher here ! In "everyday speaking French" I would translate "j'ai pas envie de venir ici si c'est pour que tu pleures". Sounds more familiar and even a bit rude which is I guess Stephane's way to speak here.

Gog

Oh god, poor Nick 😭😭😭😭

Adam

Poor Nick. You just want to give him a big hug. It's nice to see him being the focus after all poor Charlie had to go through and Nick tried so hard to be there for him. That's the give and take of any relationship. :) Thank you for highlighting it in such a healthy fashion.

Faye

Now I hate his dad more than

Hunter

Young Nick needs a hug

Mara

Omg wtf I didn’t realize how far it went with his dad

Jonathan Payne

I knew Stephane was a jerk and the root of Nick’s issues, but this is some next level BS! Little Nicky needs a hug. 🤗

Lucie

I’m French!! And it’s so good ! Good job Alice !! ❤️

Hannia Diaz

Stephane and his extremely punchable self

Hannia Diaz

He’s also the root of David’s issues, his uber jerkyness trying to get Stephane’s approval and attention.

Nicky Van den Bosch

Uch! And here I thought I couldn't like stephan less than I already did 🤢

Ignacia

yes!! I was thinking a lot about how Nick and David are two different products of a unreliable/abstent father. Specially when the mini comic was posted and we could see that part where David wouldn’t “want to be seen” with his younger brother at school. David somehow took the path of identifying with the bullying side of his father, aswell as probably caring a lot to find approval in his peers at school since he probably couldn’t get enough admiration from his dad. And then Nick’s identity is building on this fundamental contradiction between being naturally kind and sensitive and having to hide this in order to be: visited by his dad (as we see here) accepted by other males (laughing along with his friends in the mini comic) and so on, until he finds himself in this exact scene where he is confronted by a person that he loves and trusts.

Fran

Just when I tought Nick and I would have more in common

Jay

Oh this hits hard. My dad was exactly like this. He also doesn’t fully accept that I am gay, even though he knows it.. he will never ask me about it or who I date. It has been hard for him that his son is gay when I am the only boy with two big sisters.

Em

French speaker and I agree. while the original is good, this gives more of a lack of caring like: "there's no point of coming if you're just gonna cry 🫤"

Ignacia

(I spent a lot of time writing this mainly because I’m trying to avoid my current responsibilities but also because I want to study in english soon and the socialisation of gender is a big part of my topics of interests so I really hope I explained myself jeje xx)

Katrina

This is so heartbreaking. We have finally gotten to the root of Nicks issues. He represses his feelings because he feels like he has to thanks to his piece of shit dad. This makes since especially due to the mini-comic. He can not express his true feelings to Charlie because he feels like he cannot be vulnerable or else no one will want to be around him which we know is not true. When I get my hands on his dad it is on sight. I just want to give Nick a big hug.

Anna Deligio

Oh, Nick. You're safe to talk about this now. Tell Charlie what you're remembering - and then maybe ask your Mum about finding a therapist to work on this with you. Therapy before a big move like uni is a good move anyway. ❤️

Natalia Seguel Arenas

Ohhh so my “grandfather” learned his parenting skills in France with him!

Ali Michelle

NOOoooooO poor little Nick! - I had cry shamers in my family too but not in a father who left 😭😭😭 It’s so hard to deal with the shame of being a “cry baby” and come to peace with the fact that crying is GOOD and NATURAL and NECESSARY. I can’t imagine how hard it would be if I heard that from a dad who left me 😭😭😭

MMurray

“Come on!” could be translated to “Voyons donc!” But I’m not sure if that is a French Canadian thing.

S S

Oh my god this is heartbreaking 😢 poor baby nick

Jasollie

I wish Nick would say to Charlie: “I’m remembering how my dad used to tell me not to cry when I was a kid. That’s what I’m used to doing. I’m feeling overwhelmed in this conversation but you’re right, I HAVE been very anxious lately but it’s really hard for me to get in touch with my difficult emotions and to express them. But I want to try, so thank you for being there for me.” And then allows himself to break down and be held by Charlie. But something tells me that Nick won’t say that, and things will get worse. And that’s ok even though it will be sad. 😢

Jasollie

Alice, i know you don’t read Heartstopper fan fiction, but let me tell you, there are a lot of fanfic authors who are feeling very vindicated right now. 😅 There are a lot of stories out there that explore how Nick’s trauma from Stéphane has impacted him as an adult.

Gianpy

Alice, fai anche la versione in italiano !!!! 🫶🫶🫶

Tracy Donlevy

So this could be where David’s hatred of Nick comes from he blames Nick for his Dad not being around when really it’s all the Dad’s fault. Poor Nick 😢

PupFenrir

Well, it starting to come together. Nick is having an issue two fold: he is having a hard time with expressing himself to Charlie with the difficult conversation of going to Uni and Nick going to Uni and leaving Charlie behind, and Nick doesn't want to do to Charlie what his dad did to him. Nick is having a crisis that is bringing out this suppressed memory

Beam Bugge

he's cried a few times, like when he took the buzzfeed quizzes and the night after his and charlie's first kiss both of which are tied to figuring out his sexuality, interesting

Maya

My heart breaks for tiny Nick… but between these pages and the mini comic it has been a great month for those of us hoping for a deep dive into nick’s core wounds!

Krystyn

Poor Nick! I hope he will know that Charlie will never mind if he cries. 🥺💜

Flavia Morlacci ☾𖤓

my heart just break into thousand pieces 🥺 poor baby 😭 Nick really deserves a loving dad 💗

Neenie

Whoa I didn’t think of that second part. Taylor Swift has entered the chat: “Leaving like a father / running like water”

Angie Michaelis

Was not expecting this today, but I love everything about how you drew this page. The dark, squiggly broken panels of Nick’s memories contrasted with his current realizations. It feels like it’s going to take much more than one sitting to dive into this conversation since it runs so deep. Poor Nick. I empathize as someone with a dad whose love is conditional. He needs a Charlie hug right now (as do we all)! 🥺😭💙

David C Witkin

Stephane's selfish cruelty is at the root of Nick's self-doubt, self-denial and people-pleasing, and probably at the root of David's cruelty towards Nick, since David probably blames Nick for Stephane staying away. But does Nick know how to articulate this? Can he climb over this barrier and start the process of healing from this very old wound? Probably not without help. But how will he know how to seek it?

Catherine

Oui, je pense que c’est plutôt unique au français québécois ou canadien français comme expression. Je pense qu’en France il dirait « Allez quoi !! » 😂

Merel

I can't stop looking at baby Nick's sad little face. It's been 7 hours. Send help.

PoyoPotato

Hmmm maybe "je ne veux pas venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer" ?? 👌 I just wanna hug mini Nick, poor thing q-q

Jasollie

I think Nick must know that Charlie would never act remotely like how his dad did… but it must still be hard for him and i think he just hasn’t had enough practice with it, and might be feeling very tongue tied.

Lusi

Yes. I also think he won't be able for now to trust Charlie or even himself enough to let everything out what is bottled up in him. I just hope he's able to communicate this to Charlie so he won't feel rejected. They both have such big hearts and so much love and understanding for each other.

Elfi

I just wanna hug him and tell him that it's ok to cry and that it's not his fault and that it's not ok what Stephane is saying... 😭

June

I wasn't expecting this today, Nick's little face broke my heart💔 But i'm so glad that we finally get to the root of why Nick has self-doubt and are a people pleaser.. it's all making sense now, and i can't wait to see more of Nick's story and i really hope we'll see Nick getting the help he needs to heal from his past and i hope he don't push Charlie away in the process but let's him be there for him to support him😭❤️‍🩹

Pierre-Luc Dufour

Je ne veux pas venir ici si tu ne fais que pleurer

Brynn Rabinowitz

This actually makes sense as to why Nick does not want to share...he learned as a kid to hide his emotions because his Dad was not good with emotions. Nick is definitely lucky to have his Mom, she is a great parent.

DogBefriender22

OMG. This feels like a therapy session. I relate to so much of what you say here Evergreen, and have so much empathy for you. This powerful page has also taken me back to some buried childhood memories that I’ve only recently been unpacking… one French parent, lots of time when very young back and forth between Paris and London away from my parents, staying with other family, lots of goodbye scenes / mummy please don’t go… I’m also middle aged, and until quite recently had spent decades following my parental and family role models and repressing emotions and not really being my authentic self in many other ways - but not realising I was doing it. Since discovering HS I’ve always related to Nick so deeply, and through his character I’ve learnt so much about myself and he has literally inspired me to finally be my true self and be more open, and courageous. It’s been a pretty big deal! I hope (and know) that through the beautiful storytelling of Heartstopper the younger generations won’t have to live decades doing the same thing ❤️

Cliff

All the proposed translations to French has distracted me from concentrating on just how horrible a person Stéphane is! The root of the problem, indeed!

Puppies&Kittens

Yes but those were alone. The only time I can remember he cried in the comics in front of anyone was in the beach in Menorca. I think it was implied he cried after the relapse fight but it wasn’t explicitly drawn.

Puppies&Kittens

My ex was great before kids, when I could focus all my attention on him. As soon as he had to share me a whole other self centered person emerged. Turns out it was all about the ego rush he was getting from me, not the reality of me. He resented the kids presence while swearing he loved them. when interacting with the kids, he only wanted to engage with things HE was interested in, and had little patience for anything they liked outside of that. Parts of their personalities that didn’t make him feel good about himself were ignored or derided, just like here. And once we split, he had very little patience for the kids’ displaying any kind of negative feelings about it in front of him past a certain point. He used to praise my son for being “excited” to have 2 homes and get annoyed with my daughter for “pressuring” him to spend more time with her. I totally understand Stephane because I married one unfortunately.

DLDyus-Bonsell

OH DADDY ISSUES ARE RAISING THEIR UGLY HEADS 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Murgy

Well, we all knew Stephane wasn't a great father, but this I somehow didn't expect him to be like this. The possible unconscious feeling of guilt like its his own fault his father doesn't visit. The fear that being open with his emotions, particularly those like sadness and worry, will drive people away from him. The depiction of the hard memories is always striking and shows how heavy and painful they can still be years later. But Charlie isn't going to leave because you're showing a vulnerable side.

olive !

oh this Hurts

S Nowicki

Nothing like suppressing his own pain by focusing on Charlie's troubles. This is gonna hurt.

Frankie

baby Nick hurt my soul

Evergreen

Thank you for sharing this! It’s always nice to hear from people who can relate. That scene where they met Stephane in Paris and he kept smiling and didn’t know what grade Nick was in and kind of lightheartedly blamed him for never visiting hit SO HARD. My dad definitely wasn’t in France, but most of the time he might as well have been. Thank goodness for art that brings these things to light and pushes us toward healing! 💚

Allegra2346

God I really hope he doesn’t equate this to Charlie too, that Charlie won’t want to be around him if he shows his emotions ☹️

DogBefriender22

I can imagine the impact of that scene 💔 (it was a brilliantly written and performed scene too). Absolutely thankful for Alice’s art (and others) that helps us heal, as you say

Ania W.

Stop crying, Nicholas. Hide behind a mask of cheerfulness. It will be easier for me to be with you if I don't see how much damage I'm doing to you and your brother. But no... even if you hide your feelings, I won't participate in your life because I am... fill the gap with whatever you want. I can't stop thinking about this page. I hug my daughter and have tears in my eyes.

RyGy

Poor Nick

2catlovers

I was accused of being too sensitive all the time. It was only last year in my late 40s that I learned I am autistic and therefore process things differently.

Liam Orlando

I personally can’t really relate to the eating disorder stuff but this suppression of emotions caused by societal norms and pressures is something that I and many others have gone through/are going through, and it is rarely talked about. ❤️🍂🏳️‍🌈

K Lyn

First Charlie’s Ed & MH & OCD being relatable & now Nick with his daddy issues. Why I love heartstopper. It’s SO relatable

DioVosje

I love that’s it in French too!

Amy Marmol

I agree with the other native French suggestions, and the « ne » could also be omitted for an even more authentic feel. French people don’t often use it in spoken language. So I would suggest « Je veux pas venir ici si tu fais que pleurer »
