I wonder why Charlie didn't go to Nick after the flirting. They don't seem to have communicated since Nick brought him the drink. No "you did so well on the drums" from Nick or "I think you're quite drunk" from Charlie? Or we didn't get to see it (which would be too bad).

I like this development of the plot. Nick and Charlie don't have to be together all the time. Charlie performed with the band and helps his friends pack their instruments. Nick is also surrounded by friends. Even if Charlie was jealous for a moment and is concerned about how much alcohol Nick drank, it doesn't mean that they don't communicate. Let's remember that watching the action page by page makes everything take longer for us 😉

Charlie seems really hacked off that Nick didn't walk right up to him afterwards and maybe help him move his drums. He also didn't try to call Nick over or grab his attention. Is he angry with Nick for drinking so much and seeming to forget about his Charlie? Charlie's face is saying volumes while his mouth is shut tight. Nick, on the other hand, is finally an open book. His affable face reveals the same emotion that is coming out of his mouth; curiosity and concern for his friends. He's just a little too drunk to focus on more than one person at a time, so he will focus on Charlie when he is ready. Will Charlie be mad at him for the delay? Time will tell.

I love Charlie’s look of concern and sadness towards drunk Nick. We know from the last page that there is love there flowing both ways, but that doesn’t take away what Charlie must be feeling (and what I’ve definitely felt in my life) which is sadness that your loved one doesn’t want to talk so badly that they get drunk so as to remove themselves from you/the topic they want to avoid. That hurts. I know in this case it’s not being done in malice - Nick has so much love for Charlie and just doesn’t have the tools to deal with these feelings properly (go to therapy Nick!) - but it still hurts.

These past few pages have been SO GOOD! All the pages are amazing of course but this recent scene is making me so excited for the rest of the story! I’ve been wondering if this is foreshadowing to the N&C novella fight, or if this could possibly even be the beginning of the N&C story reworked to fit the comics? (The timeline isn’t quite right for the N&C fight to be happening now, but I’m really hoping Nick doesn’t wait until after a big fight in the SUMMER to finally talk about what’s going on when it’s only Christmas in the comics.😭) I had another interesting idea after learning the N&C story will be a bit different in the comics. Considering the mention that Nick has been having nightmares, and the use of day dream/ nightmare panels at previous points in the comics, what if the N&C novella fight ends up being a nightmare of Nicks that persuades him to talk to Charlie before they have a real fight? Probably not where Alice is going and I’m sure their plan for the future of the story is perfect but these pages have got me thinking!

The whole thing can be found on Alice’s instagram but here’s the part where they mention the differences! “Nick and Charlie have gone on such a huge journey not only in my published works but also in my own mind, and honestly, the Nick and Charlie we know now in Heartstopper are a little different to the Nick and Charlie I wrote about in this novella. Some of the things that novella!N&C say and do feel quite odd and out of character for Heartstopper!N&C. It's been a challenge for me to logically connect the novella with Heartstopper in my planning and writing for Heartstopper Volume 6 (now that the timeline of those two stories are converging), and l've had to accept that the events and specifics of the novella need to be tweaked to match the characters we've come to know in so much more depth over the past 8+ years in Heartstopper.”

Charlie's concerned radar definitely up - who knows what he will be walking back into the pub to see. In Bubble town, what drinks are Nick on to now with the straw? Perhaps the green dragon is referring to projectile vomit 🤢. Aled and Tara and Darcy are MIA. At this late hour perhaps the main action will concern Elle and Tao. The slump tells me Nick has moved past the euphoria stage of drunkenness and sad and vulnerable is just around the corner. Unfortunately, irrational and angry usually in there too but who knows in what order. Hopefully the last stage of regret and hangover will still include the support of Charlie...😬

It's in one of their comments from a few pages ago - I can't remember. I always like looking for the comments or answers to comments that Alice leaves on their pages. They didn't say N + C are not canon, just different now.

Incoming unpopular opinion - Not sure how I feel about a break up between Tao and Elle. We haven't really seen much of their relationship in the comics to judge how solid it is. They are much more developed in the tv show since the medium allows for that. I think, regardless, it is realistic that both versions of the couple break up at some point. Comic Tao is quite immature and TV Elle such a creative high flyer. I feel like she is truly a chrysalis still blossoming into the amazing butterfly she is going to be. The plan to go to school in Europe will ignite her. TV Tao has been a wonderful first boyfriend but I think he will always hold her back.

It's the one couple where I wouldn't feel totally devastated if they broke up. (I could also see them breaking up, then getting back together when they are more established in their careers.) . I think Tao can mature, but he isn't there yet.

I was with someone who went off recovery while we were together, and there were a lot of these moments, not fun! (And I don't think Nick is an alcoholic, just that I was in Charlie's kind of situation with my ex too many times, and I had to intervene a lot.). It would be nice if Elle and Tao could sense Nick was drunk asking and just say they don't want to talk about it, but they are teens, so they may not be as aware (Also though, they may deflect, and Nick may pressure them to talk.) I worry Charlie will be coming back to yelling, Nick will not be feeling well, or both.

it’s interesting to see differing opinions on this! i see what you’re saying for sure and i feel like anything could happen with them in the comic versions in terms of either a breakup or just a discussion/fight regarding their rl where it goes either way. however i don’t see their TV selves being able to let go of each other if that makes sense. even if they had a break i couldn’t see it lasting with how extremely attached they’ve been and are (and especially since starting their romantic journey on the show.) couldn’t see a world where they were able to let go or tao didn’t try and adjust everything to be near her. he was calling her the best thing that ever happened to him 😭

honestly, i really can’t see the TV versions of them breaking up because of how much more solid and developed their relationship is, but i agree that a breakup for them in the comic would be really fitting. it’s definitely more realistic if at least one of the teen couples doesn’t stay together after high school, whether that’s permanent or they come back together eventually. and we know it’s coming since Tao and Elle break up in the N&C novella so i’m interested to see how Alice will write their conflict in the comic!

i was just thinking abt this. esp because in s3 ep 8 at the fete, elle tells tao she might want to go to paris or berlin, and he jokes about his mom not paying for his fares, but doesn’t seem that frightened about long distance. comic!tao seems more insecure and tense than tv!tao at this point in the story, which makes sense, bc in the tv space, there’s the requirement for visible development of the supporting characters as well. i’m guessing they hadn’t had the distance convo until now bc comic!elle goes to higgs, so they’ve never had to deal w it. however, i do think a breakup between the tv characters would have more to do w elle wanting to be a free spirit, and not bc tao holds her back, but in her self-discovery, she wouldn’t want to leave him behind (like the lambert plot), but by the end of season 3 they seem so solid that i’m genuinely wondering how they’d spin it narratively.

They seem solidish. I feel like Elle is the one with the visions and feelings of big things for herself. And Tao is the one needing reassurance often from her. I realize she is older and needs to make life decisions earlier but she also seems inclined to choose an adventurous life. Maybe Tao is maturing into that as well and he is wonderfully supportive but she may benefit more from someone who challenges her.

I think it’s surprising that Nick didn’t go over to Charlie at the end of the show, like he did at the break. It seems natural that they would at least greet each other after the music stopped. And I guess it’s more on Nick to go over to Charlie than vice versa as Charlie is the one who’s busy. So that is kind of odd that Nick would just go from talking to a random person on the page before, then over to Tao and Elle without greeting Charlie. Very unlike Nick to not be doting.

I think it could be a manifestation of the anxiety he might be feeling over Tao and Elle’s argument. First chance he got to talk to them alone, he took it - even if it meant thoughtlessly forgetting to congratulate Charlie on his gig. Since he’s not operating out of his prefrontal cortex at the moment, it makes sense that he would have gone where his emotional energy was taking him at that moment. Or it could be that they’re just at the point in their relationship where they don’t have to immediately validate each other - but based on Charlie’s forlorn face, maybe they aren’t! Or Charlie is just worried about him and doesn’t care about whether or not he came up to the stage. So many possibilities!

If I’m counting correctly this is solidly his 8th drink in what I’m guessing was an hour long set from Queer Intentions??? I know he’s probably got a slightly higher alcohol tolerance with his build, but 8 drinks in an hour is cause for concern 😳 those text bubbles are getting far too wiggly for my liking 😬

Oof...the big, EMPTY space on this page catches my attention...it feels symbolic of that obvious gap between Tao and Elle AND even more so feels like it's more subtly holding ALL the unspoken thoughts, concerns, and feelings between Nick and Charlie over the past few weeks. Those 3 panels with Charlie capture his worry and continued alarmed observation of Nick so well...I love the perspective Alice created in the first and third panels especially! First, we have just the side and back of Charlie's head which appears closer to "us," showing how he has been staring at Nick STILL, making him unaware that the band is already packing up while he just....watches; that second panel portrays the exact same look Charlie's had when texting or talking with Nick recently (remember those '..." pauses!) as he has been trying to figure out what is going on and when /what to do about it. And, sigh, panel 3 of Charlie catches just the edge of him as he physically HAS to leave the frame, but mentally and emotionally, he seems to STAY there, watching Nick, as the background doesn't change at all, but his body moves to help the band. Charlie's fretting and concern are brilliantly conveyed here and it makes me feel like that empty space on this page just got a little bigger...like they need to close the space and hug or touch or talk to reground and reconnect to their precious baseline...And then, yikes, the drunken party bubbles and wavy lines return as we see our really super tipsy but so adorable Nick (still sipping a spiked lemonade I suspect...please close the bar, Green Dragon pub!)...he does look so innocent and squishable, and so content and relaxed with his cute little hand holding up his cute little face while he sips his cute little drinks(s). It's nice to see, in a way...but, to then call out Tao and Elle, whew, the bravado there, Nick Nelson. I mean, it's not off brand for a sober Nick to inquire out of concern, nor would it be unusual for him to give some really good advice...but, he's at that point where the big picture is blurry and his filter is down, and his buried emotions are more likely to escape...and he's wading into some murky territory that could call out those buried emotions...and then...

Oh, that is not a talk to start drunk, but would he have brought it up if he had been sober? Hell, is it even the right thing to bring it up as Nick more than most should know that you don't try and force people to talk about something they're not ready to discuss. However, I think Nick is trying to help, because sometimes an argument that causes a stink all night is something minor and can be dealt with before the night ends. And we know Nick is in helping mode rather than talking about his own problems. Then again, it could just be a combination of curiosity and alcohol which can be a very bad combination. I hope Nick isn't about to put his foot in it and Charlie returns from the van to an argument.
