🤣Love Charlie's panicked response, hope Nick's ok 🥲

Gregory Toner

I am with Nick … I really do not want anyone near me when I am being sick and I actually kinda freak out if someone touches me when I am being sick 🤢

artxsta

THE DIALOGUE BUBBLE FOR NICK VOMITING 😭😭😭😭

ally

i love how charlie’s standing

Mandy Hoskins

Alice that is such a good way to show throwing up, well done! 😅

Dippity_Dip

Calling her Sarah oh what a perfect son in law

Caroline S

Oh Nick, we’ve all been there

Katrina

The vomit bubbles 😭

tess ^_^

i LOVE the way u did nick’s dialogue bubbles THAT IS SO GOOD

Chloe ♡

charlie’s rushed response to sarah whilst just standing there panicking about what the heck is going on in the toilet 😭

Lolli98

Those must be awful noises from the bathroom according to the speech bubbles and Charlie's facial expression. 😬😄 I love that Sarah calls Charlie "love". 😊 You can tell that Nick isn't her first teenage son. I don't know if otherwise she would be THAT chill about it?🤔

Jordan

Not the locked door 🥺 ok now I’m really anticipating Nick yelling “everything’s fine” in between sick moments 😢 so much symbolism!

Abigail

I love how chill sarah is lol. Altho I am imagine it's nothing compared to what david was probably like haha

Charlie

Locking the door… not cool Nicholas, not cool.

Krystyn

Poor Charlie! I love his rushed response to Sara. Indeed Nick is gonna need a lot of water !

Tina

am i hallucinating or is a "bleurgh" hidden in those messy speech bubbles? if so. alice you genius lemme kiss u on the forehead (w consent only)

Roks

Nick: Vomits Charlie: Word Vomits 😂

🫧

There’s so much going on, and yet my first thought was how Charlie’s little hands in the last two panels are adorable. 🥹

Steven

I don’t drink often, but while my stomach can get queasy, I never had the urge to throw up either the day of or after I drank. No matter how much I drink.

ashley ✨

oh nick bless you😭

Barb

Why did nick lock the door? How did he have time to think about it?? Poor thing🥺🥺

Xalek

Yeah I think I'd be the same, it's not a shared activity. Charlie can get him some water and into bed to sleep it off. And ONLY sleep it off Nicholas, there will be no drunken hanky panky tonight!

Brittney

Aww Sarah, another little moment, which is another thing we absolutely need more Charlie and Sarah moments that's for sure. But oh dear... Nick you definitely drank too much and rugby is going to be even more chaotic than right in this moment

Kas

Poor Char panicking while Nick is sick has been all of us at one point. 😬

Anne Marie

Oh the locked door. The symbolism there. Nick has never actively shut him out before. (Tbh I’d do the same, but even so). Also, S/O to Sarah for being Uber chill.

J

Not the symbolism of being locked out of the bathroom and out of how Nick is feeling. Also, POOR NICKY

Merel

I love the creative use of typography in this page. Nick's... sounds and Charlie's hastily spoken response to Sarah. It's very effective!

Amanda Wetterer

I love how Sarah calls Charlie love…..

Cathan

I'm sure we all love that Charlie knows Sarah is such a good mom that he can actually share this information with her. :-)

btripi

can someone explain the “wc” on the door to me? i fear it might be a britishism im not getting😅

Maddy

*Nick throws up* Sarah: Get him some water 🥰 (She's so chill 😭)

Katie H

The way the locked door can symbolise how Nick is shutting Charlie out and not opening up to him. Also, I love how you've done Charlie's rapid response to Sarah and the speech bubble of Nick being sick

oddtree

Sarah! 💜

Samantha Mason

Maybe a dumb question, but what does the WC on the door mean?

Merel

It stands for water closet and is another word for toilet, but I've never seen a sign like that in a house 😅

Victoria Panaro

I'm lost at Sarah and Charlie's conversation 😆 The look in his face is like he doesn't want to expose his boyfriend but at the same time trying to tell Sarah the truth.. the way he plays with his fingers makes me think of Show Charlie when he was like stressing about sth

Brittany Cournoyer

I love Sarah! She knows Charlie will take care of him

Chloe ♡

i’m surprised nellie hasn’t appeared curious what the noise is yet

Jennifer Cooper

Water Closet or Bathroom. I didn’t see it when I was in the UK, but I did see it when I was in Scotland.

btripi

ooooh thank you! yeah i’ve never heard that term for bathroom before

Kirsten

Water Closet. Old timey way to say washroom/bathroom. I guess still used in the UK.

Lolli98

I don't really see why Charlie is so surprised that Nick locked the door? Are me and Nick the only ones who don't like any company while vomiting?🥴 And it's not a big mystery what's going on in there and why.😉

Merel

It stands for water closet and is another word for toilet. It's actually the Dutch word for toilet, but I didn't know it was used regularly in English as well tbh.

emily

nick 😭😭

Alex Cross

Pretty sure it stands for “water closet”. Which is a fancy word for bathroom,

kylie

i love the speech bubbles on this page! i can literally imagine exactly what they both sound like. so creative!!!

ama

sarah calling charlie "love" 🥹 I love that she fully trusts charlie to take care of nick and handle the situation and just tells him to make sure nick has some water

lexi

Nick literally shutting Charlie out because he’s in such a physically vulnerable and embarrassing state is so telling. i think it reinforces how deeply he feels the need to maintain the image of the ‘perfect’ boyfriend. loving the idea that it might take him literally spewing his insides out to finally spew his feelings.

Maddy

Nick forgets to lock the door when they have sex but made sure to lock it now 🤨

Ulises

Why is Sarah just the sweetest 🥹

Adriana

The speech bubbles😭😭💀💀

artxsta

also… i know this is abt nick figuratively and now literally shutting charlie out, but lowkey extremely relatable to not want ppl seeing you vomiting, but i guess charlie isn’t just *any* person, which ultimately is the root of the problem…

Luke

Am I the only one who doesn’t think it’s weird to lock the door when throwing up?

William Taylor

Talking to God on the great white telephone are we Nick?

Glenn

Sarah, it's your son, it's your house (and frankly, your bathroom): take charge of the situation

Justin S.

So locks dooo exist in the Nelson household! lol hope you feel better Nick!

Nikki

I totally would have also locked the door. Really love the Charlie’s speech bubble all running into one word, feels like he’s trying to say it quickly so Sarah doesn’t realise what he’s saying 😂 Also, I don’t think I’m imagining it, I think Nick’s icky speech bubbles do actually say “bleugh” but really chaotically and messy - am I right? Really love that detail.

Jasollie

Ok I think we are definitely supposed to read into Nick locking the door as Nick not opening up and letting himself be vulnerable to Charlie… but I still maintain, it’s ok to want privacy while vomiting! I’m in the throes of norovirus at the moment and I love my wife, but I don’t want her in the bathroom with me. But I can see here it’s definitely meant to indicate something deeper to Charlie. I’m hoping we see Charlie get Nick tucked in and then they can have an important talk in the morning. 🩷

Jay

I love how chill Sarah is, like honestly my mom was the same. “Just clean up after yourself” 🥲😅

Diana

Do others see the letters hidden in the squiggles? Because those are absolutely the same noises I have made when I have been in Nick's shoes...

Jasollie

Also, I am aware of WC as water closet but I’m surprised to see it in a house. Usually I only see signs on bathroom doors in public establishments. Is this a thing in England? 🤔

Theaterboi27

Don't hate me, but after five+ volumes of growing up with sweet, wise, commonsensical, and lovestruck Nick, I just don't think he would ever lock Charlie out of anywhere, at any time. Not Charlie. Charlie is his world. Nick knows Charlie would want nothing less than to be right there supporting the love of his life. For bad or worse, through sickness and health. That's love darling. Love the Jackson Pollock scribble hurling, though!!

Carly Louise

So obviously there's a lot of undercurrents of quite serious emotional stuff going here but can we also just take a moment to appreciate Alice's comedic genuis at work 🤣🤣🤣 Charlie's face and those speech bubbles I'm dead (also imagining Ice Cream Sandwich style sound effects for Nick throwing up)

GirlHero

listen!…this would peak my anxiety. charlie is much more calm than i am, fr. i just want to be able to visually confirm you are ok, if needed. like, i will fully respect you want to be alone, and leave the bathroom. it’s late in the game, for me, if you stop answering or making noises. poor nick, i hate to frow up!! 😭 next 18 hours are not going to be fun.

Sarah 🤍

why does it make sense for nick to be a loud puker 💀

Samantha

I wonder if this is going to lead to a conversation from opposite sides of the door? Like how it can be easier to say something over the phone or by text rather than in person.

Jeffrey Ricker

The difference between Nick and Charlie’s mums couldn’t be more stark, could it?

Glenn

If she's so hands off, it's no wonder David wound up as he is.

Ania W.

I think Sarah's reaction is brilliant. She found out what was going on and trusted Charlie to handle it.

Evergreen

Hmmmmm Sarah, I know you're the cool mom, but this response is a little oddly hands off! I know you trust Charlie, but when your kid is puking drunk, a 16-year-old may not be the ideal caregiver, no matter how responsible he is. Especially if you're right there! We saw flashbacks of Nick's dad openly criticizing his emotions, but I also wonder if Nick's mom, navigating single parenting, gave vibes in a different way that she needed Nick to always be OK and easy to parent. Especially since David is an asshole and brought his mother to the point of yelling at least twice in the show/comic. We can imagine David wasn't the easiest child to parent and probably took a lot of her energy. I played the happy, easy kid role for my mom after my parents divorced, even though she would be horrified to know that I felt I needed to - and she was a phenomenal, loving parent. She would never have asked that of me knowingly. Divorce and single parenting are so stressful, and sensitive kids pick up on that stress. And I think stressed-out parents are so grateful that one of their kids is easy and OK that they don't stop to question it. Even when their kid is puking in the bathroom after way too much to drink, apparently!

Noemiette

But he already has locked Charlie out in some way, by not opening up and sharing his current feelings with him. Of course he knows Charlie would want to help him and support him, the problem is him not accepting the help and feeling like he needs to be the rock, the perfect Nick Nelson, the caregiver at all times. Nick isnt just his qualities, he is a complex human being. He has his faults, and his traumas and difficult past that still affect him to this day. And we are discovering this side of him much more in this volume.

Neenie

I think they’ve locked his bedroom door before. They had just forgotten in the past

Samantha Kate

He doesn’t need looking after he’s just puking after drinking, it’s self inflicted puke, no sympathy or looking after required 😂

Lusi

I just want to hug Charlie! Look at his worried little face 😪 He is such an amazing boyfriend and it hurts seeing him hurt. I know Nick doesn't really do it on purpose but I really feel for Charlie right now. I hope Nick opens up as soon as he feels better.

Elfi

The speech bubbles on this page are SO good! The way you can still see some letters in all that mess in Nick's bubbles and of course you can really imagine what it sounds like. And Charlie's bubble when he answers Sarah really hasty. Also Sarah's reaction is just the best!

Ania W.

Honestly, Sarah is a brilliant example of a parent. Warm, loving. I hope that I will be as supportive to my daughter as she is to Nick. I love Sarah Nelson with all my heart ❤️

Jonathan Payne

I LOVE Sarah. She’s so understanding and presumes Nick will be OK in Charlie’s care.

ACxo

Sarah she’s so lovely. Charlie’s literally standing like 🕴️

Paul D

I wouldn’t have wanted my mum getting involved in a chucking up episode and I would have locked the bathroom door too.

ucfnurse

I love the sign for water closet and I used to see them when I lived in Europe as a child!!☺️😊🥰💓🙌🚾🛁🧼⚽️🏟️🗺️🎡🚎🦢✌️🕊️☮️

Antonio

i love charlie's face in top right panel😂

Lolli98

Yep. As soon as their kids turn 18 all mothers stop to worry about them, because they're adults now and have everything under control.😅

Astrid H.

I cannot stop laughing at the last panel on the left 🤣🤣🤣🤣 big moment of loneliness here 😅😅😅

laurimini

I am living for these vomit speech bubbles - Alice, you queen 🙌🏼

Kela87

I am loving the comedy of it all behind the «drama». The puking bubble and Charlie’s explaination to Sarah in basically one very long word: Genius! About Nick locking the door, I mean I think maybe I wouldn’t have done it just for the fear to pass out there alone. But I do get that it is an important detail here on how Nick is panicking about Charlie seeing him so vulnerable and imperfect. All very sad, I am looking forward to THE TALK… whenever it may happen!

Jennifer Paddock

Oh my God how did Alice perfectly capture hurling?? A-mazing. 😆

Theaterboi27

I seriously get what you are saying. But not every moment in a teenager's life is a mental health challenge. Not being unsympathetic whatsoever. It's just that most of us have been on both sides of a drunk-fest with our significant other holding hair outta the way, just rubbing our back. or grabbing a cold rag. Teenagers (well not just, ha) drink and hurl. The rugby boys played their part in poor Nick's inebriated state and now he is paying the price LOL. Nick has said over and again how much Charlie helps him and makes him stronger. This is a teenager life moment. I just do not see why there has to be anything more to read into here. Even Sarah is like OK, just get him some water, LOL.

Luke

A+ parenting, we love a calm mum 🙏

Kela87

And he’s 18!… Also, Sarah doesn’t know WHY he was drinking so much. Which is the biggest problem here imo.

Kim

*vomits in cursive*

Jasollie

I kind of see where you’re coming from. I think as parent I would still want to check in on Nick myself and then see if Charlie needed anything. I’ve just gone through holding my young children through an awful virus and the actual terrible feeling when you are sick is the same, regardless if it’s self-inflicted or not. But then again Sarah knows Charlie is quite capable and doesn’t seem drunk himself. It’s not too hard to comfort someone when they’re sick, give them water, get them tucked in etc. Also it’s presumably late at night! I think I would want to check on my kid if I knew he was sick, but if it’s midnight and his trustworthy boyfriend is there I might be less inclined, and just check in in the morning.

artxsta

also extremely sorry for bringing it up *again* but i so desperately want a season 4 for this scene, and for queen mother olivia coleman to come back and deliver these lines it’d be absolutely hilarious 😭😭😭 🕯️pls pls pls netflix powers 🕯️

Beam Bugge

good point! that's what it took for darcy to finally say "i love you" to tara so that might also be the case for nick

Beam Bugge

can't speak for all dogs but my dog sleeps through literally everything, maybe nellie and henry are the same

Noemiette

There is more to it because there is a contexte to this event. A context of him not being ok mentally at all. It isnt the first time him and everyone in the gang got drunk. But most of the time, Nick always has been the most responsible one in the group. Considering Charlie talks about maybe calling a uber insinuate that this wasnt the drive back plan, and that Nick was probably supposed to drive them back. It doesnt mean Nick never gets drunk (we see him drunk at the halloween party), but getting hammered like that is out of ordinary behavior, and that's even without talking about his behavior when the other guy tried to flirt with Charlie. So yeah, we and Charlie can clearly see he isnt opening up and isnt ok at all, then suddently he behaves out of the ordinary, and then locks himself alone in the bathroom when he isnt ok. These things are linked. It isnt just "Oh well, teens will be teens" :/

Antonio

i saw some people say sarah should take care of nick or stay there with them or whatever but what is she supposed to do? when someone is throwing up you just need to let them throw it up and its known its from alcohol, it would be a different story if it happend randomly and sarah was worried if he is sick but here just give him a minute to get done with it and its probably late at night she probably needs to go to work in the morning and she showed she cares by telling charlie to get nick some water and he earned her trust

Beam Bugge

charlie: nick?? nick: b̸͓̌̔̀͒l̴̛̻͑͒̽̋e̴̢͙̤͗a̴̻͍̽͛̍̚͜͠ū̵̢̙̺̳̝̎͐̈͆ģ̸̳̉̉̑̏͝ḙ̴̤̍͆́̓͐ŭ̴͕̩̃̕g̸̫͈̽̆̓͜h̸̝̑̌̽̄͘

Juliana Barhorst

Awww hey Sarah! It’s just Nick throwing up a lung. This page cheered me up so much today! I love the panel of Charlie like 🧍‍♂️while Nicks 🤮🚽😣. Also Charlie’s quick answer lmao.

Hannia Diaz

Sarah is chill af. God knows my mom would have make a case out of the situation.

Aims

Unfortunately, the second to last panel is the funniest thing I've seen today 💀 Charlie's tense stance! And his face! And the fact that Nick's gigantic hurl bubble makes him look even tinier than the perspective itself already does!! 😭xD

hayley

some how nick can puke in cursive- but also this does make sense there's not much you can do other then give them water and make sure they sleep it off also charlie's there and sarah trusts charlie a lot (more then jane has done with nick). and for a drunk person nick does better then most

Evergreen

These responses are so interesting to me! I'm sure I'm influenced by being a parent myself, but also by the fact that I worked in the residence halls in college and had to check on lots of puking students to make sure it was just drunk sick and not alcohol poisoning. It's always worth a second look, and young, inexperienced kids aren't always able to tell the difference. But you're right that Nick is 18! He could have easily been living by himself at this point and come home alone in this state. I guess, if he was in my house, there's no way I wouldn't have at least wanted to get my eyes on him to make sure he was good to go. But that could be the difference between Sarah and me!

Koko

I'm a bit worried that nick locked the door. That he still seems so resilient to help from Charlie

shpepanie

Awwww Charlie 👉🏼👈🏼 The Nick being sick speech bubbles are spot on, Alice 🫠 Also *ahhhh* Sarah being the calm and collected queen mum 💜

Doménica Dolly

‘I will!!’ I am tears, Charlie assuring Sarah that he will take care of Nick as much as she will 🫂❤️❤️❤️

Calfic

"a bit too much", lol. I drank probably a bit more than I should have this past weekend, but Nick seemed to drink his weight, lol. I personally think Sarah responded fine. Nick isn't disabled and can handle it on his own. (As someone who does need help in this situation, it is a bit embarrassing.). I think she was still being loving, but also trusted Charlie to handle it, and made a good suggestion. I'm with people who say that Nick and Charlie, clearly need to talk, and this may be a sign of issues, but to me, it isn't the biggest sign there has been. (That may be the Nick in me talking though, lol. )

hayley

also charlie's spending the night. i see.... i guess expressing his concerns will be soon... cause yea i think this is like the breaking point of can't let nick go on like this

RO

I want to compare Charlie/Joe standing outside the door in this scene vs the I love you scene in S3🥺

Gracie

Probably he most likely wouldn’t be able to sleep without knowing if Nicks okay

Kassie K Wilson

It’s that there’s actually an onomatopoeia in the crazy barf sound bubbles for me 😅🤢

Shanie_MC

I think Sarah is happy to let Nick learn the valuable lesson that everyone goes through about knowing your limits 😂 She knows Charlie will take good care of Nick. Hopefully getting some of the alcohol out of his system will make his inevitable hangover a teeny bit less. He is gonna feel ROUGH for rugby tomorrow 😬

Theaterboi27

Love this discussion, thanks!! I so so see what you are conveying and really agree with you. But I am just saying not every moment is an aha moment for Nick. The rugby lads did their part in Nick's current state, for sure. Just guys being guys. Evenings like this one at the ole Green Dragon and similar happen every day with teenagers everywhere. Teens, drink too much with their friends and then they hurl. We've seen Charlie, Tara, and Darcy have their afterparty moments with their significant other by their side. Tonight is Nick's time. In this very moment, I would hope there is nothing to read into it. A life moment so to speak. They are just being teens. There are so so many unbelievably poignant life lesson moments in Heartstopper which is why it is such a magical world. But every day things happen as well. And how lucky are we, to be right here experiencing it all with them.

RO

I’m really excited to see how Alice does it, like if we’ll only see one of their faces during the convo or if we’ll switch between them

RO

Maybe it’s a rugby lad thing 🤷🏼‍♀️

hayley

i forgot to add that part in! but yea- i also feel like it might have been already agreed on too

James

I've always imagined Sarah as having a 'party animal' side to her, albeit a sort of responsible hedonist 😅 She's probably had her fair share of puking up after a night out as a teenager (and probably been the one looking after her friends in the same situation) so she probably knows thee LAST thing her teenage son wants rn is the embarrassment of hiss mum getting involved. So she's keeping a respectful distance and will no doubt check in a little later.

Rosie💕

the depiction of vomiting here is horridly excellent.

UpstandingGoose

Are they at nicks house? Is that nicks mom? I forgot her name.

Noemiette

But that's what I'm trying to say ^^" This isnt just a "teen moment" for Nick. Because this is a story, and there is a story before this event that influence these events. There are a limited amount of pages per volumes. Alice isnt gonna spend so many pages on just a "haha teens" moment. This is an event that will feed what has already been written and how is shaping how it will continue. The drinking in itself isnt the problem, it's the sudden getting hammered. Yes the lads helped, but Nick went back multiples times by himself to get other drinks. And you mention Tara (i suppose the scene from the show). But it's the same thing. Yes she was having fun at Charlie's birthday, but the amount of drinking was also influenced by her state of mind at that time. My point is, this event at the Green Dragon and now in front of the bathroom is anchored in the story that has been building up for weeks, about Nick's degrading mental health and Charlie getting more and more worried. The events of that night probably finished turning on all the alarms in Charlie's head.

Brynn Rabinowitz

Nick locked the door! Love how Sarah trusts Charlie to help Nick. 🧊🥰 I am so worried about Nick. 🥴🫣

Tina

how'd u forget her name it's in the page and in the caption 😂

Lainey

The scribble words are so clever hahaha poor Nick😭 I always love seeing Sarah!

Oliver Midson

Charlie temporarily became Hajime from Ghost Stories

UpstandingGoose

Oh I meant I forgot if Sarah was Charlie or Nicks moms name 😂 i didn't know which house and mom it was.

Evergreen

Alright, I'm wililng to concede my point that Sarah's response was underwhelming, since almost everyone on here disagrees! My kid will just have to deal with a weirdo parent who gets involved when they're drunk sick, I guess. Sorry in advance, kid! 😬

Jen

I love Sarah’s chillness as a mom 🫶🏼

Theaterboi27

I do not think we are going to convince each other, LOL. I appreciate all that you are putting out there. Seriously I do. I 100% agree that Nick is suppressing a lot, and we are all so close to witnessing it all boil to the top. But, (you knew the but was coming...ha) I am just referring to this very instant of Nick's being sick. He is still a human teenager. No matter what else is going on, at this very moment of being sick, we all like some comfort from our person. And we can completely agree, Charlie is Nick's person (hopefully forever). I know I am on the unpopular side of this particular discussion. One thing I am certain we can agree upon. We adore everything about Heartstopper. I appreciate you and and being able to have this discussion.❤️

Cody

"fine"

DogBefriender22

WC (water closet) is also used in France to mean toilet, it’s a little more formal/polite than saying ‘toilettes’

Calfic

I think they agreed on him coming over earlier. It seems like the weekend, and I'm assuming that they have sleepovers most weekends at this point.

June

hahah, the scribbles😭 poor nick.. but i'm glad that sarah is so calm🥹

Laura

What can she what Charlie can’t? Nick just needs water, maybe some medicine and lay down. And someone who cares. I’m sure Sarah’s reaction would have been different when she wasn’t sure that Charlie can handle the situation.

Cliff

Actually, I’m with you! The is almost certainly the first time Nick has come home as drunk as a skunk. The situation merits some parental attention. At least I think it does!

TT

Plus, you KNOW David put her through it as a teenager! 🤣

Mark100

The scribbles are hands-down the cleverest way I've ever seen to describe off-screen vomiting.

Cliff

Which doesn’t mean imposing parental judgment on Nick. Nothing wrong with Sarah making sure he’s OK, that’s all. And who’s going to clean up that mess, exactly?

Loveislove

I love how Alice gives us a visual of barfing with doodles! I'm seeing a hurt Charlie in that 4th panel at the locked door. I know we all have personal feelings about being seen while vomiting but I think this is adding to his accumulated feelings about being shut out. I have to add to the concerned column with Evergreen. I understand in the immediacy of the moment that she is trusting the hot mess of Nick to Charlie. But as a parent, I am losing a little sleep over this and making a mental note to touch base with him. If Nick isn't fooling Charlie, I can't imagine that Sarah hasn't noticed SOME issues - even just to check in how it is going with David.

Loveislove

I think it is wonderful that Charlie can be honest with Sarah that Nick has had too much to drink and it speaks well of everyone's relationships. I hope it also may allow for Charlie to indicate some of his anxiety and concern. Just enough to put Sarah on alert if she isn't already. And from the sounds in the bathroom...wondering if a little green dragon is popping out of Nick 🐲

Claire

Love the presentation of Nick 'talking' here - brilliantly done. It is refreshing to see the open honest relationship with the parental figure here. Let's hope we see that continue into Nick being able to open up to his Mum about all he is going through and feeling right now.

Brandy78

The scribbles for the vomiting! Haha Im sorry but that seriously made me laugh!

Elsie 3

Ughhh I like to think of myself as a pretty chill parent but it’s hard for me to imagine hearing my kid hurling in the bathroom from drinking too much and just saying “ok make sure he drinks some water ok?”….but maybe it’s just my Americanness shining through. Probably a very wise choice as a parent…I’ll try to remember to channel Sarah when my kiddos get older 😬😅😬

Eileen

Hahaha this page is everything

Jasollie

Curious, what are you feeling like you would want to do? Like show him compassion/ checking in on him yourself, or would you be upset with him and let him know that? I think I would want to check on him myself but if it’s late and I knew his boyfriend was on it, I’d just wait til the morning.

neev

I mean he is 18 so maybe she felt he was more responsible

Elena

This situation with the locked door affects me so much more than I would expect. 😟 Nick excluding Charlie from him, even if he isn't doing it on purpose - I'm sure there wasn't much time for him to actively think about locking the door or not, that was defenitely more of an unconscious action - hits me so hard. It feels like such a big cut to me between them. On the cognitive perspective, I can understand that some people want to be alone, while vomiting, but for me, I think that is something that is part of a relationship. Being there for each other in EVERY situation, how bad/disgusting or whatever that even is and Nick is not letting Charlie be there for him, it feels like he is building up a wall between himself and Charlie. 😣 It feels like he - unconsciously - wants to say "please leave me alone", even if we all know, he would never say that to Charlie. And then to see Charlies worried/panicked face and to see, he can't be there for him, he can't help him, he can only stand there and do nothing, must make him feel so sad and rejected, I think + the worries about Nick that won't minimize. 😞 So please Nick - UNlock that door as soon as you are able to!!! 😟 It's so much more than just a door!

Evergreen

I would be checking to make sure it was just normal drunk puking and not alcohol poisoning since both of them are fairly inexperienced with their limits. And I would be reminding Charlie to make sure Nick lies down on his side in case he gets sick again after he falls asleep. I wouldn’t be yelling or disciplining, just checking to make sure this really was a situation Charlie could handle (because as we know, sometimes things are a lot to put on a sixteen-year-old’s shoulders! 😉). But I know I seem to be in the minority!

Loveislove

I'm agreeing with you. Just a pop in to make sure there isn't a safety concern. Especially as Nick does not have a history of this level of drinking. A deeper level of check in is for later and I think when it is just the two of them.

Loveislove

I'm concerned about next steps. I think that locked door was not so unconscious. I can see Nick spending some time on that bathroom floor and perhaps still not letting Charlie in the room not wanting him to see him like that or possibly passing out.

Elsie 3

I’m with you Evergreen! I would be worried about alcohol poisoning and would want to be there to see if he was ok and also not put all the caretaking on Charlie bc caring for someone that drunk can be a LOT. Like he’s 18 I know but he’s still living with me so I’d still want to be there to check on him and pat his back as he pukes and reassure him as he blubbers about being a terrible person and everyone hating him and other things that tumble out of our mouths as we’re hugging the toilet 😩 In another moment I’d want to check in with Nick to see if he’s ok and all that but not in a reprimanding way. At least this is how I’d like to think I’d respond, but again, I’m still several years away from teenage years so🤞🤞

SJN

I ordinarily don’t spot things like this when reading the comic, but Charlie’s feet are even turned out like Joe’s…

Chason

Okay but the mothers reaction is too calm pfft

David C Witkin

I'd stay right there with Charlie and make sure Nick doesn't pass out or faint and hit his head on the toilet or the floor. It's easy to minimize or to catastrophize, but to keep your head about you and keep calm is very important.

Murgy

Charlie's panicky fast speaking when Sarah appears is amusing, because there is a high chance she's gone through this all with David before and is just going to be calm about it. She isn't likely to need to chew Nick out over this, he just needs a supportive person and a lot of water. Nick is very lucky because he has an understanding Mum, a caring boyfriend and a helpful bathroom door through which he can have tough talks, once he has stopped producing very loud squiggles.

Melissa Holt

I slept on my son’s floor the first time he drank to the point of vomiting. I was no where near as calm as Sarah is.

David C Witkin

I'd worry about that locked door. Nick could faint or pass out and hit his head on the sink or toilet or on the floor. Or he could vomit too much and cause bleeding. He would need intervention then. He's helped other people when they have passed out (Charlie) or vomited (Imogen on the show) so him not wanting Charlie to see him like this is especially sad and poignant. I think he feels like Charlie would be put off, or angry, or disgusted. Or like maybe he needs to be the perfect boyfriend and the invulnerable tower of strength. Many people don't like their loved ones to see them at their worst because it would stress them out or disgust them, and maybe Nick feels he can't risk that? Maybe that's an old pattern that started with his father running out on him and blaming him crying for it. Now more than ever, Nick needs to open up to Charlie and he needs therapy. But he needs to unlock that door!

That locked door and the look in Charlie’s eyes makes me a little nervous. Although I think it’s really sweet that Sarah trusts that Charlie will make sure Nick gets taken care of

The barfing scribbles are hilarious. Omg I’m dying. 💖💖

This page has had me smiling for the most part... I have been there/done that in Charlie's shoes, caring for someone who got bitten by a Green Dragon (well, I've also been in Nick's shoes too which is also zero fun at this point), but that makes this whole page so relatable! From Charlie's KNOCK KNOCK and gentle, concerned call to Nick, to him then hearing what has to be the most AWFUL gut-wrenching sound...I mean Charlie literally breaks out in a cold sweat hearing Nick heaving! And, oh, how I LOVE the chaotic yet very intentional "scribbles" which show so well the magnitude of the effects of Nick's drinking choices all evening! Then, there's that LOCKED door. To be fair, if I was Nick and grew up with David, I know I would have learned to always lock the bathroom door at a young age to keep David OUT of my personal business...part of me thinks this was again an automatic reaction of Nick's, but, that sucks too because he is the drunk one, and the person who is left to analyze WHY Nick locked HIM out looks very worried about bring shut out and unable to help. I know Charlie is trying to figure out what his next step should be (there is that ... ellipse showing his thinking) both in the now AND in general to reach Nick....and as he stands there, staring at the locked door disconnecting him from Nick, I LOVE how Sarah just pops her smiling face out (with her robe actively being pulled around her to show that she just woke up to the sounds of Charlie knocking AND likely Nicky puking, lol (nothing makes a mum move faster than hearing gagging noises)...but she is...so Sarah in her response. So calm, so "do you need any help? (no "WTF is happening" overreaction here!), and her calling Charlie "love" has me in all kinds of warm fuzzy tears...But then I literally laughed out loud as Nick again heaves while Charlie and Sarah silently share a knowing stare at one another (no hiding this situation, Nicolas...) and Charlie's little hand hold shows all his uncertainty and nervousness about this whole really LONG night...(but not quite to the nail biting point yet)! The way Alice had his explanation to Sarah all run together is genius. I can HEAR his exceptionally fast and wonderfully honest reply as Charlie stands stock-still...I love how he doesn't pretend that nothing happened or try to make up some quick lie like Nick ate 'bad chicken' or something...he says what happened, reassures Sarah it is going to be okay and that he is going to be with Nick, and it's just so refreshing to see how open communication can work between an adult and teen when there is mutual respect there. I see Sarah take a minute to assess all this with her "Okay" and her, "Well" followed by a comma pause...and then give some practical advice to Charlie. His, "I will!!" is an appropriate response, but it's also laden with an air of responsibility for tonight AND for all the little (well. we know actually big) things that contributed to the night getting to this very point...She's going back to bed, Charlie's going to face that locked door still feeling a bit helpless...so the ball is in Nick's court now. (Did some one say rugby game soon? Just kidding....)

Katrin

Nick took the time to lock the door even though he is awfully sick... Charlie's concerned look here says it all. I'm worried, but also relieved they made it home. I'm glad Sarah is here as well, but worried for Nicky and Charlie. And I just remembered that Charlie couldn't eat his breakfast on the morning of the concert (was it that morning?). I hope after all of that they have at least a little bit of sleep... and a glas of water... and hopefully a good talk. ❤️‍🩹 Beautiful page~ ❤️‍🔥

Hahaha so maybe this page just revealed the different parenting/caregiving styles in our little community! It takes all kinds, after all! It’s nice to see I’m not the only one who would be a little more hands on in this moment. 💚

I’m laughing because after all this pontificating about the different ways a loving parent could react to her fully-grown teenager in this situation, I neglected to mention that I would have come out cussing about being woken up by slamming doors. A “WTF” would have been involuntary. Only after regaining full consciousness would I have found my motherliness and assessed the situation. 😆 Maybe Sarah was just in there watching TV, I don’t know. But if she was asleep, WOW. What a saint.

Mary

As someone who actually does have emetophobia, I appreciate the warnings and also the obfuscating. This is vague enough not to bother me. Thank you!

rickettyuncles

Love the “bleurgh” hiding in the scribbles😂 Thank you, Alice, for a little comic relief after all that Green Dragon stress

rickettyuncles

I’m surprised Nick had *time* to lock the door, since he was already gagging on the doorstep! I think slamming the door but not locking it would be more realistic and more in character. But maybe Nick *really* doesn’t want Charlie OR David witnessing this. I certainly haven’t allowed anyone to watch me vomit since I was a child!

There has been a lot of criticism for Sarah. I always see her as a really good parent, both in the comics and in the series. She showed so much understanding and support for Nick and Charlie. I don't see anything wrong with checking what's going on and leaving the boys to their own devices. She's at home, after all, they can always ask for help. I like that she believes in Charlie's common sense, I think that's a great compliment to him.

Hydrolyte and some butter on toast before bed, oh and stop drinking when you get drunk.

Beam Bugge

She doesn’t seem tired so I assumed she was already awake, but yeah we can’t know that for sure haha

gunclevanya

I can accept that Sarah might be chill in this immediate situation, but has she also been oblivious to Nick’s general emotional state lately? Have she and Charlie had no conversations recently? I’ve been hoping for a scene like that, but maybe the timing is better for it to happen after this panel rather than before… I just hope Sarah’s role in the comic isn’t being inadvertently diminished because Olivia may be too busy again for (fingers crossed) season 4…

Jordan

I agree AND this scene reminds me of some of the reactions back when David first came home and she seemed to be less supportive of Nick than we would hope. I think this scene shows again how no one is perfect and while she is certainly a very loving and supportive mother, everyone is capable of missing signs that their child is struggling and/or anyone can miss the mark in showing up for others. As always the storytelling here is very nuanced!

Ania W.

I see a tendency to criticize both Charlie and Sarah for not helping Nick right away. This is very unfair to these characters because they really have Nick's best interests at heart, they both love him and are always ready to help

rickettyuncles

Speaking from experience, some teens can be VERY good at concealing emotional turmoil, especially where romance is concerned. Even the best parents aren’t telepathic

rickettyuncles

But I’m 100% with you on hoping that S4 casting doesn’t affect Sarah’s role in the comic. Still crossing my fingers for Olivia to be free, or at least do a voice cameo

Samantha Kate

He’s an adult who chose to drink and is suffering the consequences of that. What is worrying about that? 😂 He’s not out missing or in danger, he’s inside the house and safe just being (self inflicted) sick 🤷🏼‍♀️

Marina

Sarah asking Charlie to take care of Nick instead of her, lol

Marina

With the "jsoiñwhiñjwfanwiuoghugh" we all perfectly understood what was happening in the toilet, lol
