The way in this situation Nick says to Charlie the he's fine even though he's clearly not 😢 And how Charlie always wants to be by Nick's side no matter what ❤️

Merel

Thanks for making me cry with that caption xx

sprjngbags

THE CAPTION U CANT DO THIS TO ME ON A RANDOM WEDNESDAY

Jennifer Moore

Oh Nick! Please just let Charlie in! Not just in the bathroom, but in your poor stressed out thoughts.

laurimini

Not to me it's not 😭😭😭

Evergreen

Bless both of their little hearts 🥺

Merel

Oh the metaphors on this page... Nick insisting he's fine even though he's clearly not. Nick being reluctant to let Charlie in, shutting him out because he doesn't want to unpack his complicated problems and show his boyfriend the less nice parts of himself. And of course, Charlie being there no matter what ❤️

ACxo

The caption is like poetry Alice

Ana Alicia Aranda De Contreras

That is a great act of love to take care of your partner at all times regardless of the circumstances🥺💗

ACxo

The way Charlie just wants to take care of Nick but Nick also needs space 🥺

Ulises

Alice!!! 😭😭😭😭 the caption ❤️

Maisie

That CAPTION 😭 Come on Nick honey let him in, literally and metaphorically 🤍

Charlie

That’s true love right there. Being in the same room Choosing to be in the same room when someone’s being sick. 🥰😆

Chloe ♡

‘i’m fine’ nick how many times can you lie about that

Lissie

Oh my heart 🥺

Ben

Aww

Synz

YOUR CAPTION STOP ITTTTT

Nessa

Oh Nicky☹️

Chloe ♡

‘you don’t want to be in here’ i feel like that’s a double meaning more than just the bathroom

ama

oh alice that caption was uncalled for 😭😭😭😭

Katrina

Oh Nick 😭

Mai

CAPTION ALICE WHAT HAVE I DONE TO YOU FOR YOU TO HURT ME LIKE THAT

CinD

In sickness and in health… Charlie Spring I know what you are! Husband Material 🙂‍↕️

Ann-Marie Still

Oh god, the 'back of the neck' sweat is so real......Alice you're attention to detail is perfect. I can almost feel the involuntary cold sweat and shudder that goes with this 😰😭

Koko

Given the vulnerable state he's in, I can understand why he doesn't want to let Charlie in the bathroom.

Sulagna Maitra

....in sickness and in health 🤗🥺💘🍂

emmy ౨ৎ

that caption was so unnecessary oh my god 😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔

.

the caption 😭😭

kayla simon

in tears over the caption Ha Ha…… Ha Ha Ha…………..

Samantha

The metaphor!!!

Aurora H.

The beads of sweat on the back of nicks neck are such a nice little detail

Leonie

honestly same nick

Xalek

Can't blame Nick on this one really, I wouldn't want someone next to me while I'm vomiting. He does need to let him in emotionally though, he's got a lot of stress built up that he isn't taking care of for one thing.

C 🐝

Charlie has been trying to take care of Nick in every way possible and keeps getting shut out… now literally . I feel for them both. 😭

Samantha

He's been taking too much space in my opinion cause he's put up a lot of walls

The Sarah E

charlie being the sweetest sweetie

emily

no… i’m not sobbing bc of the caption… definitely not

Chris

what is more heartbreaking than your loved one refusing your help when he clearly needs it ? it just leave the two of them desperately lonely ❤️‍🩹

Bonnie Josephine

the physical door also representing the metaphorical one...and then that quote is taking me out

Dionne Lakey

N: Charlie you don't want to be in my head, it's not nice in here. C: Yes I do! Let me in! I can help you. Charlie rattling the door on Nick's mind to let him in. He's being insistent now. The gentle approach has been tried. New tactic.

John Deuel

“I’m fine.” “No, you’re not.” Successfully calling your partner out on their bullshit is a learned art. Having the courage to do it, especially when emotions are running high, takes a lot. And that kind of honest, brave, communication is so key for successful long-term relationships. I love these guys.

laura

not the pylades and orestes reference ALICE YOURE SICK!!! 😭

Kristen

The things we do for the people we love!

Glenn

Just wondering who's going to be cleaning the bathroom up?

Audrina

THE CAPTION 😭

Merel

The locked door 😭 This kind of feels like a breaking point. I hope Nick will not only open the bathroom door but also finally open himself up to Charlie.

Leonie

sometimes you’ve just gotta throw up in peace

Krystyn

Let Charlie in, Nick 🥺

Dionne Lakey

Yes, it's a little insulting to the loved one that you don't trust them to support you, even if that is not your intention.

Elena

🥺🥺🥺

Ava

🥺🥺🥺

Kim

Nothing better than a loving (willing 😂 )partner holding your hair back. Let Charles help you Nicholas!

JoJo 🫶🏻🔐🎨

Nick please let Charlie in he wants to help you x 🫶🏻 please Nick also open up to Charlie tell him what’s going on x

lous

Alice 🥲 the metaphors 🥲 they're making me cry 😭 you're so talented 🙏

ama

"are you okay" "i'm fine" "no you're not, let me in" "it's not nice you dont want to be in here" all of this applies to the situation right now, but also to everything else going on. nick feels like he can't open up to charlie about the things that are stressing him out, and the more he bottles things up, the worse it's gonna get :((

Sulagna Maitra

I learn something every single day here!!! ☺️👍 I was clueless about Alice's reference in the caption and had no idea what she and everyone here was referring to. Thanks to you, now I know 😀🙏❤️

laura

you’re welcome!! ❤️ i’m a pjo kid at heart so i have a serious hyperfixation in greek mythology hahahah

els

“let me in” OUCHHH OWWWW 😭 your ability to tell two stories simultaneously is so beautiful 🥹

San

The metaphor, god… 😢

Elfi

Nick actually saying "I'm fine" while throwing up. 😭😭😭 This could go so many ways now... Will he open the door or not? Will he let Charlie help him or will he shout "I don't need your help!" on the next page...? 😬

rickettyuncles

If Nick made it to the toilet there shouldn’t be much to do—maybe open a window though 😉

Noemiette

This page is the perfect summary of this chapter. Nick being clearly not ok, trying to pass it off as fine and when Charlie insists and pushes back, Nick admitting in some way to not wanting to be seen like that. Like that being a less pretty, less perfect, more messy version of himself :/

Nikki

I kinda hope this leads to some sort of argument or vulnerability that could lead to Nick admitting he’s not ok. Maybe not a full on discussion right now but just an admission perhaps

Molly Goat

I'm gonna cry 😭 Nickkkkk PLEASE just let Charlie in

Brandy78

Nicholas Nelson, open the damn door!!!!!!!!

Dan

i love this page! the metaphor of nick not wanting to let Charlie in 😭

ella

this page hurts

RCM

Not Charlie going to get some water. Not Charlie carrying the water carefully up the steps. Not Charlie thinking about all the things on this little journey to and from the kitchen...starting WAY back when Nick first opened up about not knowing who he was without Charlie, and how Charlie was actually the stronger one. I can see all these little moments flipping through Charlie's mind, coming together to be understood more cohesively. Step, step, step. Not Charlie gently, softly speaking, "Nick? Are you okay?" Not Charlie hearing SILENCE and his whole panic mode progressively setting in...has Nick passed out? Did he accidentally fall? IS HE BREATHING? Not Charlie frantically rattling the locked door handle, willing it to unlock and only feeling minimal relief to hear a very bullshit and weak, "I'm fine" (I love the small font and the way there is no period...suggesting Nick is saying it but doesn't really believe it himself). Not Charlie, raising his voice to be that stronger one for both of them and telling Nick YOU ARE NOT FINE...OPEN THE DAMN DOOR and LET ME IN. Not Nick, momentarily falling back into his imprinted pathways of "I'm struggling right now and when I struggle I am supposed to pull myself together on my own and only THEN can I be around other people so not to bother them"... (Not me, wondering if these patterns of behavior were put into place from Stephane's unreasonable expectations of a CHILD, and then accidentally reinforced by Sarah who saw Nick "being able" to handle hard situations on his own, like he came across as so mature for his age, when in reality, he was just stuffing all of himself DOWN so he could "be fine" for everyone else...) AND YES, CHARLIE, proclaiming LOUDLY and honestly that he is THERE, he wants to BE THERE, he is ALWAYS going to be there FOR, WITH, BESIDE Nick, no matter what. Puke, not nice things, rotten things, awful things...he does not care, and he is and will be there for Nick. And Nick, Charlie may not have your "strong rugby arms" but he can be the most determined and tenacious person I know, especially for something he is passionate about, so I'd open that door or get ready, because one way or another, Charlie Spring is going to be through that door ASAP. There is nothing he is more passionate about than YOU. LET HIM IN (the door, your struggles, all of it).

ally

stop i was about to comment the rotten work quote and then read the caption

rickettyuncles

‘cause it is! from the Anne Carson translation of Euripides’ Orestes 😊 I missed seeing that quote do the rounds on Tumblr but I’m reading a different Euripides play right now 😂

KH

Throwing up is so embarrassing, I wouldn't want my boyfriend to see either. At least he doesn't have long hair, having someone hold that back for you is amazing.

GirlHero

…‘it’s not nice’ 😭 aww. yup, that’s the thing when people love you; they stick around for the thorns and the roses 💞 love them. tough day.

Neenie

Metaphorically i guess since nick doesn’t have much hair. Maybe rubbing his back

Sarah

‘I’m never drinking again’ incoming 😁

Neenie

The silence was terrifying tho — he should at least unlock the door so that if he passes out Charlie can move his body into a safer position so he doesn’t suffocate on his own vomit, or get medical attention. Alcohol poisoning is a b**ch and it’s not safe to be alone after drinking as much as Nick did.

toneelspeler

i'll take this as my confirmation that charlie's read anne carson's euripides... my fellow classics nerd!

Neenie

Can’t wait for all the salty redditors who complain about Charlie only taking to see this… although it was never true in the first place so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Barb

nick closing himself and his feelings obviously now is making me frustrated😭😭

Kim

True! Neck rub then 🫂 love language achieved

Liz

My poor boys.

Samantha

And being the one who wants to be left alone but is being bothered can hurt too because it feels like an extra thing to deal with when you don't want to have to deal with more things.

Cody

We're getting closer to them talking

Rhonda Mitchum

He loves you In sickness and in health Nicholas 💓

Dionne Lakey

Agree. If anyone's going to understand the need to keep the things in your head private, it's Charlie. But Charlie's been through the full process and he knows what hurts more.

JRob

Especially since he didn't let Charlie get away with it

Leonie

no i totally get that! just from personal experience it’s not the nicest having someone in the room when you’re ill!

Lolli98

Being a Nick who locks themself in the toilet (what a metaphor!) myself, this page emotionally hits me in the face today.😢 And again I am in awe and in love with Charlie and his strength to be outside shouting "LET ME IN!"

Ameya

Orestes and Pylades 😭😭😭

Elspeth Fougere

Oooohhhhhh 😭 ouchie! So frustrating when people wont let anyone take care of them! 💔🙁 Stubborn Nick! Dont you know how loved you are? Please dont let your insecurities sabotage your life 🥺

Theaterboi27

Sweet Nick not wanting Char to see him in his not so appealing state. Your person is standing helplessly outside a LOCKED door with a glass of water confused why the love of his life has willingly placed a barrier between them. Brilliant transitions of Charlie's facial expressions from genuine concern, to panic from the silence, to borderline anger with the locked door. So wishing we could turn the page right now to see how this all will play out. Not rushing you, Alice. Just a very anxious page today.

tofuPudding

When you love someone so much you don't want them to see your ugly sides. Because you have this misconception of what ugly is like and what it will do to relationships....because you saw it happened as a child...man...I can feel and relate to his pain.

lexi

breaking out the euripides jesus christ 😭

Jordan

Sensing that all of us including Nick will be crying soon 🥺

ucfnurse

It’s true love☺️😊👍💞❣️🌹🌞🌻🎧🥤💯🎉✌️🕊️☮️

Tori

Not Nick literally shutting Charlie out 😭

Ada Suzany

the moment to proof the true love KKKKKK

Mara

I get being embarrassed but at least unlock the door!! It’s the safest !!

laura

noooo don’t feel stupid! the quote became really popular on tumblr and many people don’t know where it’s from and that’s okay. besides it’s from one of the many translations of the euripides play (orestes), if you’re interested in looking it up this quote can be found in the anne carson translation (an oresteia).

Cliff

“Not nice” seems a bit delicate at this point. How about “It’s a fucking mess?”

Frances

Im feeling more and more that not only will we be having a DMC with Charlie soon. But also possibly with David.

Dippity_Dip

The soulmateism of it all god damnit they love each other so much

Evergreen

I think that image of Charlie carrying the water up the stairs is one of the sweetest and saddest panels of the whole series. We realize here that Charlie is still so young. The way he immediately took Sarah’s suggestion of water, latching tightly onto her maternal guidance as a source of help and protection in an otherwise helpless moment. The way we see him from above, so small, so concerned. The sweetness and innocence of this attempt to be of help, even though Nick can’t possibly stomach the water right this minute. It makes me feel so warm and so sad at the same time. It reminds me of how I felt so old and so young at the same time when I was 16. 💚

Lauri

🥺 I’m gonna cry in 3, 2, 1… 😫😭

milo !

the caption immmmm.

Lolli98

Having said that: Thank you, Alice, for always triggering processes in me without even realizing it. The characters you create are so valuable to me and I love them so much.💝

Maia

The emotions are coming in fast

Cole Morin

Nicholas open the damn door and let him be there for you like you’ve been there for him PLEASE 😭😭😭

Meike

I have this picture in my head of the two of them each sitting at one side of that door, back to back but the door still closed (yet maybe unlocked?), and they start talking.

JRob

OMG, right? Gods, I'm almost middle-aged and I'm healing through these characters

JRob

I want ALL the story now so I know what happens!!! I also never want another page again so it doesn't have to end.

Beam Bugge

charlie grew up in the house of the repressed emotions, he is definitely used to seeing that behavior by now haha (and he's done a fair share of it himself)

Beam Bugge

"it's not nice" I think Charlie is fully aware of that by now nicky

Beam Bugge

Alexa play do you want to build a snowman

Brittney

Aww Nick.. I was just talking about this to someone, honestly the amount of love and cherish we give someone even before marriage, it's important to showcase to your partner that you'll always be there for them regardless the situation and Nick, your boy wants to be there for right now in this moment, he loves you too much to not do anything. At least I can say that even though Nick and Charlie will have their heated moments, they still want to be together no matter what, like they are that much in love with each other that really showcases all the shit that has happened, they work it out and it brings them closer than it ever has before

Loveislove

Charlie is giving Nick a lot of declarative statements. He is not asking but demanding of Nick to be let into his pain and his life. If Nick continues to deny him and will not unlock that door, I think we are going to see some anger from Charlie - perhaps an appearance from David. Nick doesn't want to drive away Charlie but seems to now not understand he is undermining his relationship. Charlie may have to consider some boundaries. I hope he doesn't. I would prefer some frank talking. But this horrid night is not over and hopefully it will be rock bottom.

Melanie

Oh how the turn tables! Now it’s Charlie’s turn to tell Nick he just wants to be there for him and not to say he’s fine when he’s not. Alice is going to make us all cry isn’t she???

Meowzer

It’s not rotten work if it’s for someone you love. As a caregiver for my husband, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for him. Nick needs to let Charlie be the strong one now.

zara ahmed !!

in sickness and in health from day 1

David C Witkin

Oh, my poor Nicky. Please let your lovely Char take care of you. You deserve to be the one who gets looked after and pampered and cared for, at long last. In sickness and in health. To quote an older female relative: "That's love, darling!"

Teri Lyn

I didn’t understand the reference before I read the comments but it’s absolutely beautiful

Nika

Loving your comments and observations, thank you! 💜

Brynn Rabinowitz

Love the double meaning in what both Nick and Charlie are saying to each other. Relates to both the drinking and the fact that Nick has to talk to Charlie and Charlie is worried about Nick.

Murgy

The mirroring between the immediate problem, and the more long term issues Nick has been dealing with are masterfully done. Nick is suffering and Charlie wants to help, but he can't because Nick won't let him in. Charlie is there for you Nick, he loves you, cares about you and wants only the best for you, but you need to open up to him if he is going to help. I know its scary but you need to talk. And drink about a bucket of water.

Samantha

I think it's really interesting that Nick says "it's not nice" instead of something about it being gross, because puking can be rather gross, it feels like an indicator of what Nick is really hiding from Charlie.

Jordan

Very random but the drawing of the toilet is so good!!! Very good use of line and perspective 😂

hank

"in sickness and in health, remember?"

Marina

That terrible awkward silence behind the door made Charlie lose his patience. And I get it.

Marina

I am randomly rereading this page and now is getting me emotional, I promise. I am feeling so freaking bad for Nick. That incredibly loud silence behind the door that Nick gave as a reply. "I am fine (lying again)" "You are not, let me in (do not lie to me, let me in, I wanna help you)" "It is not nice here, Charlie (do not help me, I do not wanna be bad for you)" The subtle way to not let him in his head. Not letting him in his bad feelings, but then making Charlie feel even worse, hurting him, forcing him to be "helpless". Forcing him to get away from him. Even physically. And then, me feeling so freaking bad for Charlie, the real impotence. It is painful to see from outside, as the audience we are. Ah, jesus.
