Adorable! And very gracefully done! I'm baffled by the idea that a book for young ppl, about young ppl, should be more explicit than this. What more than the heart eyes, hand squeeze, and glowing giggling convo is needed to convey that something new and special happened? That there was nervous, intense tension that resolved in some way - that involved love, passion, checking in, consent, and a loving aftermath - seems enough to me. And if at the target age for this book, I'd seen it as a baby lesbian and seen something explicit and concrete, I may have felt like it wasn't as relatable as the more universally possible highlights depicted here. Ditto if it were explicit in ways that would have been theoretically applicable to me but not within what I thought I wanted to do - what I mean is that among the many other issues w being more explicit than what is depicted, giving a very concrete set of experiences could be something that confused kids looking for templates might measure against when trying to judge if they're doing it "right". And queer sexual experiences can be so varied and can encompass so much, all of which can be right, whether the first baby steps beyond making out, or more advanced experiences. Meanwhile, the important parts are not left to the imagination, so young people do have a template for them: emotional intimacy, love, consent, passion, and taking care of each other before during and after a profound feeling, new partnered experience. This non explicit, romance and relationship forward depiction leaves space for young readers to find their own level in the content and implies that anything that happens can be profound and needn't conform to any particular physical actions in order to be lovely and valid - while critically focusing on the beauty of the respectful relationship being modeled.
